Presidents Report

Hi Everyone

Please accept my apologies for being away for

another meeting, Kris and I decided to take

advantage of some rather cheap air fares and make

a quick trip to visit our overseas family, as our two

grandsons are growing way up too fast. Thanks Dave

for chairing the November meeting.

While I am saying thank you, I would like to acknowledge all of the members who

were able to give up some of their time and attend our stand at the recent 4WD

and adventure show. I know that Kris and I enjoyed our time on the stand on

Friday morning, I hope others did as well. A big thanks to Terri for stepping up and

organising this activity. Remember we may have some extra visitors over the next

two meetings please make them feel welcome.

Finally elsewhere in the news letter you will find a new proposed “Trip Leaders

Responsibilities”. This is an update of our 2005 version. The change was

prompted by tighter record keeping requirements put on us by our insurers, but it

is not a substantial change. The document has been broken up into four sections,

planning before the trip starts, at the start of the trip, during a trip and after trip

actions. At first glance it looks like a lot, but as you read it you will see that it is

just a list of pretty obvious steps. They won’t all apply on shorter trips, but on

longer trips most of them will need to be considered.

On a sadder note, Paul Bryant, our resident Guru on all things legal and

pertaining to our club, has reluctantly advised that this month’s

information sheet will be his last.

On behalf of all members of the club, I would like to thank Paul for his

wonderful contribution over the past 12 months. I feel sure, that if you

approach Paul informally at a meeting with a question, he will be only too

pleased to pass on his knowledge to you.

BLANCHETOWN CHRISTMAS FUNCTION - UPDATE

There are a couple of people who have not yet paid their deposit for

Blanchetown. If you still intend going, you must pay at the November

meeting.

To those who have paid, Thank You.

Everyone is booked for Friday and Saturday night, and leaving on Sunday.

Greg, the park manager has said that normal checkout time of 10:00am can

be extended, so we will have time for a shared breakfast on Sunday morning.

Please bring a Salad and a Desert to share on Saturday night as part of our

Christmas celebrations. All meat will be supplied by the club along with some

soft drinks.

For breakfast, there are facilities in the park for us to use, so we will gather,

(weather permitting) for breakfast.

BEACHPORT AUSTRALIA DAY WEEKEND - UPDATE

Dinner money can now be paid - $30.00 per head for a 2 course meal and a

game of lawn bowls. All money needs to be paid by the December meeting

to finalise numbers. All equipment for lawn bowls will be provided and

there will be an area set aside for the kids, such as table tennis, for

example.

We are going to run a competition at Beachport which will require you to

supply us with a baby photo of yourself. We are going to have a “gss who”

competition, so we need a photo that makes it difficult to identify you.

Please scan the photo and send it to Terri or Lee. That way we won’t need

to return any originals.

We are anticipating a worthwhile prize, to make the comp worth winning.

Towing Laws

I have just come back from a 4wd trip where 7 cars (with 2 towing trailers) ventured

across the top of Lake Torrens for a week. It was a great trip and relatively uneventful for

all, but it did get me thinking about how much gear we think we need to carry on a trip

like this. The two 4wds towing trailers had 4 people on board, so room was at a premium

for them. One trailer in particular was a 6x4 trailer and was loaded with ‘everything’ you

could imagine, but had no brakes fitted.

In a previous monthly column I discussed weights being carried, but how many people

actually know about some of the current towing laws?

For instance, did you know that if a trailer is not fitted with brakes then the mass of the

trailer must not exceed the unloaded mass of the towing vehicle or a GTM (Gross Trailer

Mass) of 750 kg, whichever is the lesser. The average weight of a 6x4 trailer without

brakes is around 250 kg (unladen) and this is why you can’t really carry more than 500 kg

of load in this type of trailer.

Any trailer with a GTM more than 750 kg is required to have trailer brakes fitted.

What about a few other towing laws –

A trailer must not be towed with a person in or on the trailer.

The load on a trailer must be safely secured or restrained before moving onto a road and

if an item falls from the trailer onto the road, it is the driver’s responsibility to

immediately remove it from the road.

A trailer must be securely coupled to the vehicle towing it and must have a safety

connection such as a chain that will keep the trailer connected to the towing vehicle in the

event of an accidental disconnection.

A motor vehicle and trailer combination which measures 7.5 metres (or more) in length is

classed as a long vehicle. When travelling on a highway the driver of a long vehicle must

keep a minimum distance behind another long vehicle travelling in front of the driver.

The minimum distance depends on what area you are in. On a road train route you need

to be a minimum of 200 metres apart and in other areas a minimum of 60 metres apart.

It’s worth knowing some of these Laws to keep you and everyone else safe on our roads.

TRIP LEADER’S RESPONSIBILITIES Updated Nov 2017

Trip Planning:

1. Organise, in consultation with the Events Officer and Assistant Trip Leader if

available, a complete trip outline which will include such pre-trip information as:-

1.1. Dates of Trip

1.2. Destination

1.3. Type of trip e.g. sand driving, bush tracks, working bees or scenic etc. and

difficulty level and vehicle suitability, if considered necessary the trip leader

may stipulate minimum vehicle requirements

1.4. Approximate Total Distance

1.5. Fuel range required i.e. maximum distance between refuelling stops. Type of

fuel available. (Gas is not always available)

1.6. Convoy Limit (if applicable)

1.7. Maps of the Area

1.8. Meeting Place and Time

1.9. Suitability for caravans and trailers

1.10. Facilities and accommodation (e.g. camp fires, bush camping, self sufficient)

1.11. Determine the availability of firewood and the regulations regarding

roadside collection. When in doubt take your own.

1.12. Rubbish disposal

2. Obtain property owner’s permission to travel over private or pastoral land.

3. Prior knowledge of the trip is preferable, but not essential. Plan a route with breaks

so that drivers are not extended. Plan lunch and camping spots.

4. Identify potential alternatives if the route is not passable.

5. Check weather conditions and accessibility.

6. Arrange for any special equipment that may be required (winch, flags etc.) The Club

has some equipment available for loan.

7. Forward to the Club Magazine Editor the pre-trip information for publication at least

1 month prior to trip. The Events Officer can provide a suitable template for this

information. Try and be present at club meeting(s) prior to the trip to address any

questions.

At The Start Of The Trip

1. Identify a responsible person from each vehicle and

a) confirm that all occupants are correctly listed on the trip sheet,

b) discuss the 4WDing history with any driver(s),

c) ask if there are any medical issues with any of the occupants,

d) collect a RFDS donation. A gold coin is suggested,

e) ask the responsible person to sign their entry on the trip sheet.

2. Inform the trip participants of the trip plan. Specifically outline break times, toileting

arrangements, rubbish removal, excessive noise, driving behaviour and general

conduct.

3. Identify new members and visitors - make sure they are welcome and mix in.

4. Select 2 people to prepare the verbal & written trip reports. NB verbal 2-4 minutes.

5. Mention the importance of minimizing the environmental impact of vehicles.

6. Advise the trip participants of convoy procedures, particularly visitors.

7. State if convoy position is important. Allocate specific positions if required.

8. Select a Tail End Charlie.

9. Conduct a radio check and identify positions of each vehicle in the convoy.

During The Trip

1. Accept authority for the trip and keep control.

2. Ensure that any driving or camping fees are paid.

3. Ensure the convoy conforms to the Club Constitution, By-Laws and Policies.

4. On each day inform the participants of the trip plan for that day.

5. Be aware of new members and visitors - make sure they are welcome and mix in.

6. Encourage the early engagement of 4WD and other responsible 4WDing techniques,

such as reduced tyre pressures, keeping to the tracks and minimising wheel spin.

7. Remind the participants of convoy procedures, particularly visitors.

8. Monitor progress of convoy members throughout the trip. Supervise at obstacles.

Communicate regularly with Tail End Charlie. Consider using separate radio channels

where there are multiple hazards.

9. Ensure that all gates are left as found.

10. Ensure that stock and their watering points are not disturbed.

11. Keep participants informed of changes as they occur. Nominate break times in

advance.

12. Manage, or delegate incident control – accidents, injuries and recoveries. Have

details of major incidents recorded.

13. Warn the convoy of specific hazards as they become apparent.

14. Trip Leader is to inspect the campsite and campfire prior to departure for safety and

cleanliness as per the Minimum Impact Camping and Touring Guide of the SA 4WD

Association and organise a cleanup if required.

After The Trip

1. If there were any significant incidents, then document the incidents on the reverse of

the trip sheet and brief the Event Coordinator. The Event Coordinator will advise if

any further action is required.

2. Promptly return signed trips sheets to the Event Coordinator. If the trip leader has a

scanner then emailing a scanned copy is highly desirable.

3. Advise the Event Coordinator who will be doing the verbal trip report. NB verbal 2-4

minutes.

4. Advise the Newsletter Editor who will be doing the written trip report.

5. Pass the RFDS donations to the treasurer.

6. Prepare notes if applicable on the trip for the club Trip Co-ordinator’s library.

MEETING. PLEASE READ THROUGH IT AND RAISE ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY

Nullabor and South-West WA – Stacey Dix

We had a fantastic month-long adventure along the coast and South-West WA. The lucky

crew consisted of myself, Kathy and Allan Dix, and Chris and Greg Chase. We had a lot of

off-roading adventures and there was so much to see and do – but there were definitely a

couple of highlights worth sharing:

• Dozens of Southern Right Whales at the Head of the Bight (Nullabor), but also 30

metres off the beach at Twilight Cove (via Eyre Bird Observatory out of Cocklebiddy).

If it wasn’t freezing cold in the water, you could’ve jumped in there and swam with

them they were that close.

• Bilbunya Dunes, nearest to Balladonia in WA (picture right) – a 6hr 4WD track greeted

with the spectacular site of sand dunes in the distance, rising 100 metres high and

white as snow. It’s very remote and we had the whole place to ourselves – an

unforgettable sight, but be prepared for the long drive in.

• Driving up Wylie’s Bluff in Esperance – a steep and smooth granite outcrop. Hard to

tell the gradient from the photo above, but you can spot the “little” Nissan Patrol at

the bottom of the beach, which is the start of the drive. You’re staring into the sky

the whole way up!

• All the bays and inlets around Esperance (including Lucky Beach, with the squeaky

white sand) – Cape Le Grand National Park is excellent and there’s really great

camping facilities at many of the bays.

• Seeing the Warren River rush to meet the ocean at the Yeagerup Dunes out of

Pemberton (WA) and dipping our feet into the Indian Ocean.

There are too many wonderful experiences to name, but I highly recommend the journey.

One tip for new players is the lack of fresh food (fruit & veg, meat and bread) between the

WA border and Norseman. There are no shops – only roadhouses with very limited or no

supplies – so make sure you’ve got supplies so that you’ve got the time to explore all the

great stuff along the Nullabor that most people never get to see! It was definitely an

unforgettable trip with great company!

Coorong – 14th

/15th

Aside from the fellowship and 4WDing, one of the things I love about the 4WD

Adventurers is the access to some specular properties. Pitlochry, a privately

owned cattle station, is a perfect example of this and we were lucky enough to

use this property as a base for our adventures along the Coorong.

Arriving on Friday dinnertime were 7 vehicles, Mike and Amber, Brian, Ray, Phil

and Karen, Joe, Werner and Laurie. Some of us made use of the accommodation

provided whilst others set up their own camps outside.

On Saturday we were met

by new visitors Arash and

Naz in their Pajero Sport

and Ben in his Jeep

Wrangler. We headed

down to The Granites to

start the day’s drive along

the beach. Whilst the sand

was not as challenging as

expected we all were

learning what gears and

tyre pressures worked best

for the different cars.

We made our way to 42 Mile Crossing with no incidents to speak of but an

enjoyable drive nonetheless.

Saturday evening we were

invited on a tour of the farm

and were amazed at the

beauty of the place.

Sunday we went from 42 Mile

Crossing to Tea Tree Crossing.

Ray was the first person to

run out of traction but

managed to get underway

without assistance. Further

up the beach we helped a

young couple (Matt and Kate) in a Pajero; our only recovery for the trip. Once we

had them mobile, they decided to tag along with our group for the morning. After

building up our confidence many of us dared to go lower on the beach, dodging

the waves and risking getting bogged in the soft sand. I was secretly hoping to put

my recovery tracks to use, but the Maverick never got stuck!

sills. It was a very

strange experience

to be driving across

such a wide

expanse of water; I

felt like I was

captaining a boat!

Those of us who crossed the Coorong headed back to camp for an early

departure, while the others returned to camp via the beach we’d just driven up.

Thanks to Ray for leading the trip and to everyone who came (especially our

visitors). We had a most enjoyable weekend.

Yankalilla Day Trip – Saturday 7th

October 2017

We set off on Friday around lunch time to collect our passengers for the weekend. After

only having arrived home late on Thursday night from a wonderful 2 week cruise we

definitely needed a break lol!

We chose to hire a rental property for the weekend at South Shores and it was a lovely

property with great views over the lagoon and of the local birdlife.

Saturday morning we arrived just before the allotted time of 9.00am in Yankalilla to find

Jim and his Lions Club helpers ready for us. We registered and paid our fees and in no

time at all we were off to traverse the private properties so kindly made available to us

for our day trip.

After entering the first property from South Road we aired down as we did not want to do

any damage to the properties and there were some areas where it just made sense to be

on lower pressures.

We were fortunate enough to have Jim as our Trip leader and he is very knowledgeable

about the area and its history. He kept us well informed with information on the ruins of

the Mine Managers house and the short lived gold mine, the introduced (not native) trees

in the area and the details of the wind turbines along the coast.

We stopped into Rapid Bay for lunch at the Primary School. The Lions Club once again

supplied us with a great lunch of BBQ meat and salad followed by peaches and ice cream.

Yum!

We continued on from Rapid Bay through the wind turbine area and on to Cape Jervis

where we aired up and then headed up the hill for an ice cream at the local store.

There were 43 cars in total made the trip to Yankalilla and we were divided into 5 groups

the day.

I only heard once on the radio that someone was momentarily no longer moving forward.

That was as well as me when getting through the gate with the big hole proved to be a

bigger challenge than was expected in the 200 series. That’s the last time I take the

trainers advice as to which line I should take lol! Knew I should have gone to the left!!

A day that started out a bit gloomy and wet turned out to be a lovely day with sunshine

and mild temperatures.

A big thank you to Dale for taking charge of this trip as Events Officer (not sure how I

would have done it while sailing across Torres Strait) and to the Lions Club for another

successful day trip.

Also thank you to all who participated and helped to make the day so enjoyable.

Three alternative routes to Omeo: 1020 - 1140 km from Modbury.

1) Via Bordertown, Horsham, Bendigo, Wangaratta, Bright,

Trip Requirements All camping at Omeo & Harrietville caravan parks.

All track driving will be day trips from caravan parks.

Convoy Limit: 10 vehicles total, members only.

Driving: sealed highways to caravan parks.

Track driving: scenic mountain & forest tracks, grade 2-4, some

very steep and rough in parts, may be challenging if wet.

Vehicles without raised suspension and traction aids (diff locks or

electronic traction control) may not be suitable. Please discuss

with trip leader if your vehicle is not equipped with these.

Fuel Requirements Total trip length approx. 2500 km.

collected on tracks.

For those who travel there early, there may be some driving organised

prior to the trip sytarting

Trip Route Day trips from the Beachport Caravan Park. The group will be split into

manageable numbers for the Day trips.

Possible destinations are Robe via Little Dip Conservation Park and

Carpenter Rocks via Canunda National Park.

Trip Requirements Beach recovery gear necessary (shackles & snatch strap).

Air compressor, Sand Flag & UHF radio essential.

Low range. High clearance.

Fuel Requirements “Short” day trips around Beachport (<250km).

Trip Accommodation Based at Beachport Southern Oceans Caravan Park (08-87358153) or

alternative accommodation as your wish.

A 4WD Adventurers group booking has been made with the Beachport

Southern Oceans Caravan Park. Confirm your booking of one of these

reserved sites by contacting Terri. A one night deposit will be required.

Cabins may be available for booking, however you may find that they

have all been booked by now.

Trip Costs Accommodation costs as per Southern Oceans Caravan Park or your

selected accommodation.

Various activities have been organised in addition to the regular

driving. There may be some costs associated with these activities.

Combination of sand dunes and tracks.

Be prepared for hot to very hot conditions but it can also be very cool

Easy access to fuel on Yorke Peninsula.

Fully self sufficient bush camping with long drop toilets.

* Gleesons Landing is quite a large area and there are several

campsites that will accommodate larger groups. Camper trailers

and caravans should also be able to find somewhere here,

although things may be a bit tight if trying to back a caravan. The

sites are sandy dirt, sometimes with a bit of grass in the winter!!.

Tent pegs are easily placed.
