PRESIDENT’S REPORTBy: Beni Barrett

November is upon us and our Northern friends have mostly returned to The Gardens…..Welcome Back!

I want to make everyone aware of the new postal delivery person for The Gardens, Stephanie. Please welcome her should she be at your

mailbox area. In speaking with her I was informed that some of the mailboxes are FULL and she is unable to stuff anymore in them. I told her that I thought this might be an issue in the summer months since we have a large group that leaves the area but winter shouldn’t be a problem. With that in mind please make sure you have someone checking your mail while you are gone from the community. Per a USPS regulation she will be required to stop delivery to said boxes and pull the mail and take back to the Post Office. Mail will be held 10 days then it will be returned to sender. I am sure this is not something most will want to happen so make sure to check your mail regularly.

Hopefully I will see more residents at our monthly board meeting in the clubhouse; 2nd Wednesday of each month unless otherwise specified. Our 2017 membership drive is underway so drop by the TGHoA table during Tuesday Coffee and renew/join our association; $20 annually per household. Our November meeting will be on 11/9/16 and I look forward to seeing you there, meeting at 7:00 P.M. ---- refreshments at 6:30 P.M. All Garden residents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

monthsStart your puppy out right and learn the basics of being

an awesome pet parent. S.T.A.R. stands for socialization, training, activity, and responsibility, and this program follows the American Kennel Club program while laying a strong foundation. Basic training activities include the name game and loose leash walking, and puppies will work on these commands: sit, down, drop it, give, wait, and follow me. Your puppy will gain socialization skills with other puppies and people, and we’ll introduce puppies in a positive way to everyday objects they may encounter. We’ll discuss housebreaking, crate training,

safe toys, and ideas to keep the puppy busy. The class ends with the S.T.A.R. Puppy Test and the pet parent’s Responsible Puppy Pledge.

Advanced Puppy Obedience: for puppies 6 months and up

Your puppy is getting older, and it’s important to keep it fun for everyone while helping puppy learn. In this class, we’ll work on more advanced behaviors such as the stay, heel, and leave it commands. You’ll learn the importance of keeping your puppy mentally challenged with fun puzzle games and activities. You and your puppy will have fun together with attention games such as watch me and touch! Your puppy will also learn how to properly and safely greet others while out and about. You’ll both have fun!

Basic Dog Obedience: for dogs 8 months and upYour puppy is growing up and it’s important for your

dog to behave well at home and while you’re out. Similar to our Advanced Puppy Obedience class with its emphasis on more complex behaviors and fun mental challenges, this class is for puppies and dogs 8 months and older. We’ll perfect the commands heel, sit, stay, leave it, and recall. We’ll introduce light distractions and work on leash manners. During the later weeks of class, we’ll introduce cone work and more formal heeling patterns. You and your dog can learn to walk together as a team.

Advanced Dog Obedience and Canine Good Citizenship: for dogs 8 months and up

The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenship certificate is recognized as the standard for dog behavior and awards dogs with good manners. This class is for dogs 8 months and up and continues working on basic cues in a more distracting and challenging environment. Training goes “on the road” as we navigate around campus while performing known cues. Each week, we’ll introduce and practice two new Canine Good Citizen skills, for a total of ten skills. Week six culminates with the Canine Good Citizen Test, and dogs passing the test receive the Canine Good Citizenship certificate.

$150 per six week session*Required Vaccinations: Distemper, Hepatitis

(Adenovirus Type 2), Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptosporosis, Bordetella (kennel cough) and Rabies. Puppies should have the last vaccination at or after 16 weeks old with a booster vaccine given 2-4 weeks prior to the 16-week booster.

Do you have a smartphone and use apps? Have you heard of Nextdoor?

Nextdoor is a social networking application to add to the fleet of them already on your smartphone. The cool thing is this one actually works and is useful. Nextdoor

provides a free private social network to connect you with your neighbors and build an online community. Our community, Tiger Lilly Rd, includes several of our closest neighboring communities like Lexington, Harrison Ranch, Ancient Oaks, Aberdeen, etc.

It offers an easy way to connect with one another to build a safer, more connected area by providing helpful tools: Quickly get the word out about break-in or

suspicious person in area Find out who does the best paint job in the area Non-emergency contact with Manatee County

Sheriff Department Who can recommend a great restaurant Ask for help locating a lost pet, bike, car, etc Find a new home for an outgrown, unused bicycleI think that this is a great use of social networking

for a greater cause, and it will hopefully be a good step-forward in creating a stronger, safer and more united community; Nextdoor is coming to Canada soon. Thanks to our leader, Margaret Guzman, we are currently 26 residents strong. I would be happy to invite you to our Nextdoor community, just send me an email, [email protected] .

Treating Blepharitis and Rosacea with Dandruff Shampoo:

Q. I have had awesome results with T/Gel for my rosacea and blepharitis. My blepharitis was so bad that my eyelid had cracked open. After one treatment it cleared up. I was amazed that my skin also felt softer and the redness faded.

A. Blepharitis means inflammation of the eyelid. When this is caused by yeast overgrowth on the skin, dandruff shampoo can often be helpful.

T/Gel, a coal-tar-based dandruff shampoo, discourages the Malassezia yeast that is associated with seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and blepharitis. Like any shampoo, T/Gel can sting the eyes, so take care when using it on the eyelids.

I have also been using the dandruff shampoo for my rosacea. It does work great and costs pennies! Prescription drugs from a dermatologist did nothing. I stopped using them and one day put a little dandruff shampoo on my face when I was washing my hair – what a nice surprise and so easy!

Protecting Yourself Against Unsolicited Calls and Emails

Receiving unsolicited calls and emails is not only an

annoyance, but it is also an invasion of your privacy. The best way to protect yourself from fraudsters and

hackers who are trying to steal your personal information is to never respond to calls or emails from unknown or questionable sources.

Here are some tips to help keep your information secure:

Beware of Caller ID Spoofing — Fraudsters deliberately falsify their Caller ID information to disguise their true identity. They may even use a familiar number/name to trick you into picking up their calls. It is important that you never share any personal identifying information with them.

Learn about Phishing and Pharming — Scams that are trying to steal your personal and financial information. Phishing has primarily been online in the form of email or pop-up messages but can also occur over the phone or through the mail. Phishers have even started using text messages.

CLEANING YOUR BATHROOM SKYLIGHT

Contributed by: Bill ChattoIs your bathroom skylight dirty? Here is how to clean

it and make it look new again. The white opaque globe is held in place by “tabs” that rest underneath an offset plexiglass elliptical plate that is screwed into the ceiling with spacers which allows for the tabs to fit. To remove the globe, twist either clockwise or counter-clockwise. A back and forth turning motion in one direction and then the other may help. Once the globe is removed, the plexiglass plate can be removed. Before removing the plate, you should mark the orientation of the plate, to make sure that it is replaced in the same position. (The plate may not fit correctly if the same holes are not used). Note that there are some spacers applied to the underneath of the plexiglass (Sometimes these are foam-like). These can be removed and discarded before cleaning the glass and replaced with pieces of felt furniture pads available in either hardware or home improvement stores. A 1” round felt pad can be cut into quarters and affixed right over the underside of the hole. Before applying these spacers, wash both the globe and plexiglass plate in warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly. Affix the pads and insert each screw into the hole of the plexiglass and through the felt pad about 1/8” (this will assist in finding the proper ceiling screw hole). Before re-screwing the plate to the ceiling, insert a toothpick or wooden matchstick (or two) into each ceiling hole and snap off flush with the ceiling. This will give the screw a nice tight fit. Do not over tighten the screws since that will diminish the offset needed for the globe – just make sure the plexiglass plate is firmly attached to the ceiling. Replace the globe,

positioning the tabs between the screw locations and turn the globe clockwise or counter-clockwise to fit the tabs under the plexiglass plate. Congratulations, you’re done!
