On Veterans Day we celebrate the veterans who have

served or are still serving. On Memorial Day we celebrate the

veterans who have died. But on 9/11 we celebrate our heroes

who went to work to help our nation and its citizens after our na-

tion was attacked on September 11, 2001. Our celebration was

silent, somber and respectful. Led by our Student Council Officers,

the fourth grade left the building in procession followed by the

fifth grade. We walked and walked and before all turned the corner we could see our

Student Council dressed in red, white and blue holding American Flags. We crossed the

street to see the monument of all the names of the Veterans from Bordentown. Finally, we

walked back to the school, maintaining silence and respect. To remember that day and the

heroes who stepped up to help our nation, that silence was golden.

Veteran’s Day by Reagan Ludwig

Veterans day is a federal holiday in the United States that is celebrated every

year on November 11th. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran came up with the idea

of Veteran’s Day to honor all of the people who served in the United States Military. The

first Veteran’s Day was held on November 11,1938. It was originally called Armistice Day,

because it only honored veterans from World War I, however, on June 1,1954 it was offi-

cially changed to Veteran’s Day to honor those in all wars. Many people confuse Veteran’s

Day with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is for remembering veterans who have passed on,

mainly in battle. Veteran’s Day is for honoring all veterans during wartime and peacetime.

On November 11, 1921 an American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in

Arlington, Virginia. His identity was unknown, and this grave is known to us as the Tomb of

the Unknown Soldier. Every November 11th, the president of the United States places a

wreath above the unknown soldier’s grave, as well as all of the veterans that have bravely

fought for our country. We, without a doubt, owe our lives and women who have and con-

tinue to serve our country with honor.

Here at MacFarland, On November 14, 2016 we showed our gratitude and ap-

preciation for those that have served our country in all

branches of the military: Army, Navy, Coast Guard,

Marines, and Air Force. Family members and friends of

family came to our school during a ceremony in which

students sang a song for them and recited poetry that

showed our love for our country and expressed how

grateful we are to be free.

Two Looks at Halloween

Fun at the Harvest Dance by Luke Williams

Halloween & The Harvest Dance were the “perfect brew” at MIS! I interviewed my friend Malik about

what his favorite parts of Halloween were, and how it could be better. "How was Hallow-

een?" I curiously asked my friend, Malik. "Halloween was good and I enjoyed it," he replied.

"What was your favorite costume?" I asked. "The Vader one," he said. We were both Storm

troopers, so we work for Vader also. "What are some hopes for next year's Halloween?" I

asked. "More Partying!" Malik replied. I agreed with him because A: I love to party and B: I

liked the Vader costume too. I thought Halloween was Awesome! Seeking thoughts on the

Harvest Dance, I interviewed my friends Danny and Tyler. "I thought the harvest dance was

great," said Tyler. "Some Improvements they could add are different games." "What was

your favorite costume?" I asked curiously. "The Donald Trump one that chased me," he said,

right before he showed up again! Danny added, "I always think there should be more food and music, but overall, I

thought the dance was great!" I also agree because A: the harvest dance is ALWAYS great, and B: I also think more

music is always a good thing. The request sheets were filled front to back, and we all had a blast! Overall, the dance

and Halloween were awesome. We really have a magical school!

A Snapshot of The Harvest Dance by Zolie Erdos

Don’t be scared, the MIS Harvest Dance isn’t really spooky... or is it? This years fifth grade Harvest dance met in

the MIS gym on Friday, November,4 2016. Just like last year this dance was full of surprises and lots of fun.

The MIS Harvest dance is always a good opportunity for kids to meet up with friends and dance to some good mu-

sic, play festive games and indulge in a snack or two! When the 5th graders were asked, overall there was a good

response about this year’s music and snack selections. Olivia, from Mrs. Meyer’s home room, stated that she “really

liked the dance this year! I just thought the music was amazing! And I was really happy that they had water this

year.” Another student named Rachel was in complete agreement and “loved” the snacks this year.

This years dance had a variety of good snacks to choose from. The snack table included regular potato

chips, barbecue chips, salt and vinegar chips and hot chips. Then to quench student’s thirst there was water. For those

students who were stuffed and needed a break from dancing, there were games to play too. The games selection

included throwing bean bags into a witch's pot and dangling donuts that were just waiting for a nibble. Student Milo,

from Mrs. Meyer’s home room, thought that the dance was “awesome and just as cool as last year”, one of his favor-

ite activities was the donut game.

The 2016 MIS Harvest dance was another hit with it’s 5th graders and

another success for the hard working PTO parents who made it all

possible.

What’s Trending? Pokemon Go! by Amon’yei Johnson

On April 1, 2014, Google announced an app called “Pokemon Masters.” This is an app that can track down

Pokemon, on Google Maps. After a bit, Google’s ‘little prank’ wasn't so little anymore because fans downloaded

Pokemon Masters twelve million times! In the long run, Google and Nintendo teamed up and released “Pokemon

Go” in 2016. Here are a few tips if you are interested in this app:

How to customize your avatar:

When you’re in the Pokemon Go game, you will have nine icons in front of you, those icons are a head, hair, eyes,

shoes, shirts, pants, backpacks, a person, and a hat. When you are one hundred percent sure you’re finished de-

signing your Pokemon Go avatar, tap the checkmark on the bottom right of the page to continue.

How to get your first Pokemon:

When you are finished customizing your avatar and actually get into the game, you will have three Poke balls in

front of you. Those have Pokemon inside of them, those Pokemon are, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.

How to catch other Pokemon:

In order to catch the Pokemon character you see in front of you, you

have to put your finger on the Poke ball on your screen, swipe forward

to “hit” the character in front of you then the character will circle three

times and if this occurs then you get to keep that character! When you

get your new Pokemon, you can explore wherever you go! How to find

Pokemon, you might have to go to specific areas. For example, for wa-

ter types you might go to go near lakes, rivers, boardwalks, etc. For

ghost type Pokemon, you can go near graveyards, animal graveyards,

alleyways, and tombstone markets. You don’t always need to go to

these locations, but it will be an easier chance of finding them.

Q:How long have you been teaching? A:Eleven years Q:Why is violin so important? A:Violin is important because it is what I enjoy and love the most to do! Q:Do you think violin is fun and why so? A:Yes, because you can play many different types of music with it. Thank you, Mr. Vieira, for all you do for us!

Book Review by Jayden Ryan

Spy School by Stuart Gibbs Genre: Mystery

Twelve year old Ben Ripley has a pretty normal Middle School life: bullies, boring teachers and his favorite subject, math. But all of that is about to change when Ben comes home to find a CIA Agent sitting in the living room. The agent invites Ben to Spy School. But Ben’s picture of a “spy school” isn’t what he sees. It’s basically a regular school with only a few spy-training moves involved; until he meets Erica. Erica is the most well-trained spy at Spy School, and Ben has a major crush on her. When she tells Ben he’s on a dangerous mission, he gets super scared. Will Ben succeed, or will he

never be seen again?

I LOVED all of the action though there are a few words I wouldn’t have used myself. Overall, it was a very good read! A few parts were funny (example: someone pulled a

post-it note from Ben’s bottom!)

If you love action, spies and a good mystery, you will love this book! I recommend this book for ages 9 and older, and

give it 5 stars!

Book Fair a Huge Success by Brianna Armitage

Do you like reading a good book? Then you must have loved our school’s 2016 fall book fair! There were amazing books, posters, school supplies, and of course a nice selection of bargains! Some of the books you may have seen there were the Key Hunters series by Eric Luper, the I Survived series which includes Lauren Tarshis’ new addition of I Survived: The Eruption of Mount St. Helens,1980 and Shark School by Davy Ocean. Be sure to check out your class library for even more amazing books! We as students here at MIS are very fortunate to have a book fair. Of course this whole book fair would never have been possible without Mrs. Collora. Mrs. Collora is our PTO volunteer in charge of this whole entire book fair. Mrs. Collora worked with Scholastic Books to be sure there was something for everyone! She made sure that we have such a great time there. We thank her and all volunteers who assist-ed at the book fair. I hope you enjoyed the book fair.

Hurricane Matthew by Leah Hickman

Hurricane Matthew was a life threaten-ing storm that affected Central America and the southern United States. It was the first category 5 storm since 2007. Name on September 28, 2016, it became a hurricane on September 29, 2016. It caused over 1 billion dollars worth of

damage of what it has done to the area it hit.

Hurricane Matthew started just below Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba as a category 5 storm. Many trees were down and power outages oc-curred across the area. The storm surge got to 11 feet. People were evacuated from their homes

during the time Matthew hit these areas.

Once it made it’s way past that area, it made it’s way up the Bahamas. Roofs were ripped off of houses! It ended up making its way all the way up to North Carolina, but at that time the storm was not as rough and had subsided a

bit.

During the time Matthew hit the United States most people evacuated, but those that did not evacuate, gathered supplies such as bottled water, canned food, emergency radios, and flashlights and kept themselves as much out of harm’s way as they could. Some houses close to the ocean that weren't on stilts got flooded and ruined. Beaches got covered in water and were damaged greatly. The only good news is that most of the people that evacuated, when they

returned to their houses they were mostly intact.

Six counties in Georgia got warned with a hurricane watch warning, and were hit with the storm pretty dramatically. The storm surge got up to 8 feet above ground level there. The wind gusts got up to 75 miles per hour, and the rain-

fall even got up to 10 inches!

Hurricane Matthew ended up being one of the most destructive hurricanes ever to hit the United States. It is now just another hurricane in our history. Luckily, it is over and everyone is safely rebuilding their lives in those areas, which

is what is most important.

4th Grade Newspaper Crew Members Share Their Thoughts by the 4th grade reporters

Madison Lugo: I tried out for newspaper because I love writing, and telling everyone what’s happening in the real world, and I also want other people to see my writing because I want to improve and get feedback. Leah Hickman: I tried out for newspaper this year because I have written a newspaper before with my friend Raima. We did a page for each season of the year. We even got to interview the principal and the assistant principal. I really enjoyed doing it and so I said to myself that it might be fun to try out for newspaper club! Reagan Ludwig: I tried out for newspaper because I just love to be with people who love to write as much as me. It also gave me a sense of importance that the whole school could read my article and learn more about who I am. Amon’yei Johnson: I tried out for newspaper because I wanted to take a try to see if I liked it. Rebecca Method: I tried out for newspaper club for three reasons: first, my dad was a newspaper man; second, I love writing, and third, I thought it would be fun. (However, my father is no longer a newspaper man. He says he used to love newspapers, but that was before their quality diminished to junk. He says that newspapers are dead, and that I should never ever aspire to work in newspapers.) Alyssa Torres: Why did you try out for newspaper this year? I tried out because I love writing and trying new things. Why do you enjoy writing? I enjoy writing because you can write about whatever you want and express your feelings. A Week of Respect, a Year of Good Character by Leah Hickman & Reagan Ludwig

Respecting people is a very important thing to do in life. Nobody likes to be bullied or made to feel unim-

portant. Giving respect not only shows others that you care about them, but you also care about and respect yourself.

That is why you should treat everyone and everything with respect at all times. Here at MacFarland Intermediate

School, we understand the importance of giving respect, and on the week of October 3, 2016, we celebrated Re-

spect Week as an entire school community. During this week, classes learned about respect in Guidance Lessons with

our Counselor Ms. Perrine. Here are some highlights of what our school did during our respect week.

During this week a poster contest flyer was given out. We made posters explaining respect. The posters

were hung around the school for the entire month of October. The purpose of the respect week posters are to spread

everybody’s idea of respect. This shows how everybody thinks and feels about respect and caring for others. This

shows how important respect is to our community. Having the school decorated with all the wonderful ideas of re-

spect was a way to bring all of us together.

Also, purple slips were given out and if a student saw another student doing an act of respect they would

write the student’s name and the act of respect on the slip of paper. After that, the student would put the paper in the

classrooms respect bucket that they received at the beginning of the week. Later that week, on Friday instead of pull-

ing MIST tickets respect slips got pulled. One person from each class got picked and got a prizes from the MIST cart.

During that week everyone made sure that they were being respectful and did their best to show kindness to every-

one.

On Friday, all of the students wore red, white, and blue to represent our school colors. We had an assembly

where Mr. Jake Ballentine came in to sing to us. He sang inspiring songs for us and played his guitar. It was very nice

that he came in and gave our school a wonderful and inspiring concert about respect, and helped spread the mes-

sage of love and kindness. Everyone enjoyed him very much!

So that is what MIS did during respect week. The week turned out to be pretty fun for us students didn’t it?

We can only hope that all of the us became better people after sharing all of the ways we

can show respect and love to each other not only during respect week, but every day of

every week. It only takes one small act of kindness to brighten someone's day and show

them that they are important. Each of us can do one small thing to make a difference for

someone else. Respect yourself and others….show the love!

A New President for our Nation by Uditi Tripathi

Elections What are you doing this fall? Are you jumping in leaves, playing Frisbee? Well let me tell you what President Barack Obama is doing this fall. He’s packing his bags getting ready to leave the White House, as his time of service to our nation is coming to its end in January. So, our nation needed to vote for a new President. This year we had 5 great runners. Two of them we all seemed to know: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, but also running were Jill Stein, and Garry Johnson, and Evan McMillin. Everyone in class thought that whoever received the most popular votes would win. Well that’s partially correct. Let me explain. When the Constitution was signed, something called the electoral college was made. They electoral college is the body that elects the president and vice president every four years. Our ballots clearly state that voters vote for electors who pledge to vote for a particular candidate. Let’s look at a mini-biography of the two candidates who were “front runners” for the election: Republican Party Candidate: Donald Trump Donald John Trump was born in New York City on June 14, 1946, to Frederick and Mary MacLeod Trump. As a teenager, Trump attended New York Military Academy, where he was an athlete and a student leader. His college years were spent at Fordham University, in the Bronx, and at the Wharton School, the business school at the Universi-ty of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Wharton in 1968, Trump went to work for his father as a real-estate de-veloper. Trump has four adult children: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka, Eric, and Tiffany. In 2005, he married model and businessperson Melania Knauss. The couple has a 10-year-old son named Barron. Trump has eight grandchildren. Democratic Party Candidate: Hillary Clinton Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She is the oldest of three children. Her father, Hugh Rodham, was a World War II veteran and owner of a small business that made and sold curtains. Her mother, Dorothy, was a full-time homemaker. In 1993, she became the first lady of the United States after Bill Clinton was sworn in as president. He was re-elected in 1996 and served until 2001. She then became a senator in New York. After President Obama won the 2008 presidential election, he asked Clinton to serve as U.S. secretary of state. She accepted, making her the third woman in this important position. She resigned in 2013 and two years lat-er, announced her plan to run for president again. Clinton lives in Chappaqua, New York. She and Bill Clinton have one daughter, Chelsea, and two grandchildren. Winner In this election there was a very fair chance for Secretary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jill Stein, or Garry Johnson to win. Our school election had voted Hillary Clinton as the winner. But the national winner was…………….DONALD TRUMP! Whether you voted for Mr. Trump or you didn’t, keep in mind he will be the president of our United States of America for 4 years minimum. We congratulate him and welcome him as our next president!
