Pawleys Presbyterian Mark’s Message A Prayer for this Season of Thanksgiving This season reminds us, gracious God, of the opportunity to express graƟtude. And we are indeed thankful. We are thankful for meaningful work and leisure moments to enjoy the fruit of our labor. We are thankful that your great, grand purposes for our world include those small personal pleasures of tucking kids into bed at night, of digging in the flower garden, of squeezing the hand of one we love. We are thankful that the peƩy schemes we plan for ourselves are frequently interrupted by your larger and beƩer purposes. We are thankful that when the excitement of a newborn has worn thin for the parents, the baby learns how to smile. We are thankful that when we can’t keep the faith, the faith will keep us. We are thankful that there are those who care without demanding something in return. We are thankful that your blessings are deeper and more consistent than our graƟtude. You have given us so much, great God. Grant us one thing more: a heart of graƟtude. Amen. What is that task? Most people would say the task is to hire a new pastor! Actually the call of a new pastor, while important, is only the byproduct of a much more essenƟal task. The purpose of the interim Ɵme is for the congregaƟon to understand its idenƟty and unique calling in following Jesus Christ in this moment of history with the present needs of its commu‐ nity and world. The congregaƟon must know what it is called to be and do, and then intenƟon‐ ally embrace that idenƟty and calling. Only then will the congregaƟon be prepared to search for a pastor whose ministry is congruent with that mission and will lead the congregaƟon toward fulfilling that calling. I will be detailing that process for the congregaƟon in the coming weeks so that you will un‐ derstand it more completely. And please conƟnue to pray for the congregaƟon during this Ɵme of transiƟon.

Mark’s Message

A Prayer for this Season of Thanksgiving This season reminds us, gracious God, of the opportunity to express gra tude.

And we are indeed thankful. We are thankful for meaningful work and leisure moments to enjoy the fruit of our labor.

We are thankful that your great, grand purposes for our world include those small personal pleasures of tucking kids into bed at night, of digging in the flower garden,

of squeezing the hand of one we love. We are thankful that the pe y schemes we plan for ourselves are frequently interrupted

by your larger and be er purposes. We are thankful that when the excitement of a newborn has worn thin for the parents,

the baby learns how to smile. We are thankful that when we can’t keep the faith, the faith will keep us.

We are thankful that there are those who care without demanding something in return. We are thankful that your blessings are deeper and more consistent than our gra tude.

You have given us so much, great God. Grant us one thing more: a heart of gra tude. Amen.

NOTES FROM NEAL As we head into November, we at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church head into the Advent season embracing all the changes that have taken place the last few months. It has been a time of uncertainty and anxiety, but also a time to reflect on what makes this body of Jesus Christ truly special. As I looked at the two verses mentioned below, it reminded me of how important it is to always give thanks to our God in Heaven for His unlimited blessings in our life. It also reminds me of the dozens of ways I am truly thankful here at PIPC: I am thankful for a loving Heavenly Father, who created me in His image.

I am thankful for His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to save me from my sins & the death I deserve.

I am thankful for the Holy Spirit, the presence of Christ in my life to guide me in my Christian walk.

I am thankful for my family and friends, who without them, I'd be nowhere near the person I am today.

I am thankful for Pawleys Island Presbyterian, and the love & support I receive from you all every single day.

I am thankful for THE BEST church staff out there, and all our talents & strengths we bring.

I am thankful for the eyes & energy of the PIPC children, and for their passion for learning about Jesus.

“Then we, Your people, the sheep of Your pasture,

will thank You forever and ever, praising Your greatness from generation to generation."

Psalm 79:13

"Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God."

Philippians 1:3

I am thankful for the spirit and leadership of our PIPC young adults, who challenge me to be a better youth minister to them.

I am thankful for the ideas & commitment & re-solve of our Christian Education ministry teams, whose desire to see Christ in the lives of all of us here at PIPC is second-to-none. Won't you join me in being thankful this holiday season?? YOUR Director of Children's and Youth Ministries,

Neal

Sunday, November 1st, is All Saints’ Day. A beautiful service is planned to celebrate our saints who have gone before us. A new anthem, “Song of the Saints,” was a donation in honor of Mike Berry. Sydney Windham will be singing first soprano on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu.” Paula Richardson will play flute, and Renee Windham will accompany on piano. Sunday, November 8th, is Stewardship Sunday. We will have one service at 11:00am followed by lunch at the Holsclaw Fellowship Center. The Bells will be playing as well as Chancel Choir singing Ruth Elaine Schram’s beautiful “With These Gifts.” On November, 15th, the Chancel Choir will be singing a new arrangement of Heather Sorenson’s “Come, Ye Faithful People, Come.” On November 22nd, the Chancel Choir will be singing John Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Hopefully the Children’s Choir will be joining us! Marie Aker will be joining Lana for a piano/organ medley of Thanksgiving hymns.

The Book Corner

New Reference Materials To assist with your Bible studies the PIPC Library has been updating Reference materials. On display for November are the following new resources: The New Matthew Henry Commentary This classic work by Presbyterian Minister Matthew Henry still has the meta-

phors and analogies that set his commentary apart, but presents them in the language of today. A brief introduction precedes each book. For the most part Scripture quotations are from the King James Version of the Bible, with the New International Version having been consulted and used to help with explanations.

The Wiersbe Bible Commentary consisting of: Vol. 1 – Old Testament, Vol. 2 – New Testament, and CD-ROM – Old and New

Testaments The easy-to-read sections emphasize personal application as well as Biblical

meaning. Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe is an internationally known Bible teacher, former pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, and author of the popular “BE” series of Bible commentaries. This commentary includes for each book an outline, key theme, and key verse(s). Scripture quotations are from vari-ous versions including the New American Standard Bible, American Standard Version, and The Living Bible.

The Moody Bible Commentary This user-friendly commentary is by the faculty of the Moody Bible Institute. In

addition to an outline for each book, an in-depth introduction with infor-mation about the author, theme and purpose, background, and other applica-ble material is provided. The commentary is based on the original languages of Scripture with quotes from the New American Standard Bible.

New International Bible Commentary, F. F. Bruce, General Editor Based on the New International Version translation, this commentary provides

book outlines and introductions, but also includes separate articles for both the Old Testament and New Testament on text and canon, and environmental, historical, political, and religious background.

Bible Bookworm Fall Semester

The Fall Semester of Bible Bookworm is in full swing at J.A.M. – okay – there was that night missed due to rains and flooding, but the children are great readers and should have no problem completing the 10 books or 100 pages from PIPC’s Library to receive a Bible Bookworm Certificate and book award at the Decem-ber 13th J.A.M. Christmas party. Sponsored by the PIPC Library, this reading program is intended to encourage our children to develop a love of reading while growing their reading skills and becoming familiar with the PIPC Library. Each J.A.M. night through November 15th, the children will be given the opportunity to come directly to the PIPC Library when they arrive to check out 1 or 2 books each. Reading Logs are due November 22nd! Happy reading to all of our Bible Bookworm participants!
