(Page 1 of 2 on Phil Donahue)

The Phil Donahue show made its debut live on TV from Dayton, Ohio on November 6, 1967. The Phil Donahue Show was the first talk show that included audience

participation in the interaction between the show host, Phil Donahue, the guest or guests of the day and the audience.

Phil Donahue focused each of his shows around a single theme – sometimes a new social trend and other times a hot topic was picked as the topic for discussion of the day. For example, the first guest on the very first Phil Donahue Show was an atheist

activist named Madalyn Murray O’Hair.

On This Day In American History: November 9 (Page 1 of 2 on Carl Sagan)

Astronomer & Educator Carl Sagan was born on November 9, 1934 .

http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/07/11/carl-sagan-reading-list/

Sagan’s New York Times obituary aptly sums up his impact on American society over the last 40 years – it states : “Carl Sagan, an astronomer who became one of the nation's best-known

scientists by enthusiastically conveying the wonders of the universe to millions of people on television and in books,” and that statement is right on the proverbial money!

Sagan, who was a David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and did work with N.A.S.A., very enthusiastically encouraged people of all

ages to study science by promoting how interesting the subject in books and on television.

Sagan made more than two dozen appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, wrote best-selling books

that focus on science including “Contact,” “The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark,” “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space,” “Billions & Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the

Millennium” and “Cosmos” the companion book to the exceptionally popular 1980 PBS astronomy series of the same name.

Carl Sagan died in 1996.

On This Day In American History: November 11 In 1938 The American Standard “God Bless America” Was First Performed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1rKQReqJZg http://www.last.fm/music/Irving+Berlin

The song “God Bless America” was written by the famous American songwriter Irving Berlin.

Berlin wrote the original lyrics in 1918, completed the song in 1938, it was recorded by Kate Smith, a popular singing star of the 1930s, she debuted the song on American radio on Armistice Day in 1938. The song was an instant hit

and became very popular during the 1940s and 1950s as it was frequently played on radio in the pre-TV era.

The song has since become a sort of un-official national anthem in the United States and is one of Irving Berlin’s best known songs and it became singer Kate Smith’s signature song.

Irving Berlin wrote many other American standard songs during his career including “White Christmas” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” Cheek to Cheek,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” There’s No Business like Show Business,” “Easter

Parade” and many more!

Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and had a darkly satirical writing style and is seen as one of the most prominent American writers of the 20th Century.

Some of Kurt Vonnegut’s most popular and critically acclaimed works include:

“Slaughterhouse-Five” which features protagonist Billy Pilgrim being abducted by aliens, traveling through time

and witnessing at first hand the destruction of the German city of Dresden when it was bombed by Allied forces during World War II (something the author, a prisoner of war at the time witnessed first-hand);

“Cat’s Cradle” another fantastical fiction novel which focuses on the end of the world;

“Breakfast of Champions” which tells the tale of two old men one of whom believes that everyone he

encounters is a robot;

And “God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater” which offers the story of a foolish man who encounters a lawyer who then works on parting the man from his money.

Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007. You can check out Kurt Vonnegut’s books, or the DVDs made based upon his

On This Day In American History: November 19:

In 1863 President Lincoln Gave His Famous Gettysburg Address

President Lincoln spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Virginia, the site of one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War – “The Battle of Gettysburg” which was fought in the July of 1863

and caused more than 50,000 casualties.

And the speech President Lincoln gave that day is one of his most famous speeches. Here’s the text of the speech:

“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal." Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow, this ground-- The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here. It is rather for us, the living, to stand here, we here be dedica-ted to the great task remaining before us -- that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Abraham Lincoln, Draft of the Gettysburg Address: Nicolay Copy. Transcribed and annotated by the Lincoln Studies Center, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois.
