Veterans Day

In 1921, a World War I unidentified American soldier was buried in Arlington National

Cemetery. His name and birthright were unknown. President Warren G. Harding officiated at

the interment ceremonies. The Tomb of the Unknown stands alone atop a hill overlooking

Washington, D.C. Similar ceremonies honoring unknown soldiers, took place in England at Westminster

Abbey, and France near the Arc de Triomphe.

These memorial services commemorated the anniversary of the end of World War I at 11:00 a.m.,

November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This day was dubbed Armistice Day.

Armistice Day became a recognized holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday twelve

years later. On June 1, 1954 the commerative date was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.

On Aug. 3, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill to select and pay tribute to unknown

soldiers of World War II, and the Korean War. On May 30, 1958 the President awarded each military hero the

Medal of Honor. The Unknowns were then interred in the plaza beside their World War I comrade.

On Memorial Day, May 28, 1984 President Ronald Reagan presented the Medal of Honor to the

Vietnam unknown while he presided over the funeral. The unknown Vietnam War hero was buried in the

Tomb of the Unknowns absorbing the tradition of burying one soldier or sailor to represent all who gave their

lives for their country.

The remains of the Vietnam Unknown were exhumed May 14, 1998 due to suspicion of identity. DNA

tests identified the man as Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie. Lt. Blassie was shot down near An Loc,

Vietnam in 1972. The crypt that contained the remains of a Vietnam Soldier will remain vacant. Remember

those fallen veterans and all American service people on November 11, Veterans Day.

The Box Hill Community

Leisure Center, more

commonly known as

“The Barn,” has finally

been repainted. Anne Lyle has

been the driving force behind the

change. As the old paint continued

to chip and rust spots began to form

on the doors, Anne finally managed

to convince the board it was time

for a makeover. The interior was

painted with earth tone colors.

Please, take extra caution not to

scratch newly waxed floors or newly

painted walls

Design Review

There is no denying it, dog urine

severely damages grass. All dog

owners have to suffer through the

unsightly spots. They try

everything from extra watering,

to giving their dog pills or

tomatoes juice to change the

acidity of a dog’s urine… and

still, they have ugly yellow

circles on their lawns. Then

again, it is a small sacrifice to

endure when you love your pet.

Then, there are those who do not

own pets, and they too have the

yellow circles on their lawns,

their spots are due to the location

of their home. They happen to

live on the main circle or a side

street that is often the path of

those who walk their dogs. It is

not fair to those who invest time

and money into keeping their

property nice to have to endure

such damage to their lawns. Be

considerate when walking your

dog; don’t

let them

urinate on

the lawns

of your

neighbors!

Children’s Holiday Party HoHoHo… Mark your calendars for December 6

2009 Pot Luck Dinner and Bonfire

By: Joe Hughes

On Friday October 23, the Box Hill North Community held its annual Pot Luck dinner and Bonfire event,

sponsored by the Outreach committee. Sadly, the Bonfire was cancelled due to the weather, or expressly,

monsoon rain. The absence of the bonfire though, didn’t dampen the hearts, or appetites of the 25 Pot

Luck diners who met at the Barn.

Starting at 6:30pm, outreach committee members

Carol Townsend and Elaine Nohe welcomed everyone

to the Leisure center. The Pot Luck featured an eye-

catching cornucopia of meals including meatloaf, mash

potatoes, green beans, and a tasty taco pasta

casserole prepared by Sheila Knight. Aimed at the

sweet-tooth, Shari Morris baked chocolate chip

cookies, and by popular demand, Phyllis and Jim

Kordek carried-in a cinnamon cake, yummy! The food

was so good; a few people were spotted exchanging

long-held family recipes.

Folks stayed past dinner in spite of the bonfire cancellation. It was a good night to chat-up neighbors, and

make friends. “This is such a nice way to meet new people in the community,” remarked Sheila Knight.

“It’s also nice to come up to the pot luck and not have to cook dinner at home on a rainy Friday night.”

Many thanks go to our volunteers who helped make the event a success. Vinny O’Sullivan and Bob

Townsend helped with set-up. Anne Lyle, Elaine Nohe, Cathy Norman, Carol Price, and Carol Townsend

performed clean-up duties.

Once again the community Outreach Committee worked hard to plan another great Box Hill North event.

Check the Barnstormer every month for future events.
