Cal-City Poker Run Kudos to Dave for all his hard work very well done. Course was fun and interesting. Randsburg is COOL. A

group of us rode over to Fremont and around the mountains Sun PM arriving back at camp 5:30pm as most of the last RVs were pulling out.You wouldn't believe the carpets of grass & flowers covering the area! Many of the trails are hidden under new vegetation and many of the sand washes we usually can ride have DEEP ruts and are virtually impassable. We found some very good trails from Cal City to Fremont though including ALOT of sweeeeet single track. A couple of us are cooking up a 2 day ride course that would take us from Dove springs/Red Rock through Cal City & Fremont to Mud Hills & or Lucerne. Lots of details remain to be worked out. John Wiltsey

HBMC Team Race I had a great time. It was very exciting when two bikes pulled in at the same time it was like the Indianapolis 500 car pit. Rick and I had a good time pitting. He was worried like any father would be when his younger son came in first. His other son got clipped at the Bomb, but he did come in and Rick was relieved!! We had seventeen racer's and about 6 or 7 two looper's. James Miller got a flat so he only did one loop. Bill Westby (prospective member) did two loops. A few other new members also raced one loop I don't recall all of the names but they all came in, and In pretty good time. We need to get more of our Ruster's out there to help in the Pit's.Bruce

Lost Mine Poker Run 3-19-05 Adventurous weather, great riding, great people and a good cause. We had it all at the

Lost Mine near California City and Randsburg. When we pulled into my planned campsite Friday morning someone was already there and planning to stay 8 days. They offered to share their campsite but didn’t think that would work out since we like to let our dogs run wild and we run our generators at all hours. We found another good spot down the road and soon the Moores pulled in, accompanied by rain showers Tom was ready to ride so he , Tom Jr. and Eric Benda rode out with me to set up the checks for the Poker Run even though the rain was a steady drizzle. As we approached Government Peak the rain turned to snow and we sat on top of the peak for a moment to watch the white flakes drift down. In Randsburg we ducked into the White House Saloon for a frosty Sasparilla and then found the manager of the (CONTINUED Page 7)

It’s All About the Journey It’s always exciting to be in a group of riders taking off on some new adventure. I especially enjoy when we are headed for a specific destination because whether it’s taking pictures at the Husky, wandering through the dark in Schmidt Tunnel, or drinking root bear floats in Randsburg, there is something special about arriving there via motorcycle. The best part of these memories however are the stories that come as a result of the expedition. It might be the rocky down hill half way through the ride, or the crash into the bushes when someone misses the turn, or the rocky sand wash where we had to carry our bikes over the boulders. (remember that one Dana?) We become better riders not because we have seen the destinations but because of what we do along the way. Being a Christian is much the same thing. We have the promise of Heaven, but it’s the journey along the way that gives us the stories and experience we need to be followers of Christ. It’s during our travels that we get to know Jesus and the more we know Him the better we are able to ride through life’s challenges without crashing, to stay on the trail even when we can’t see ahead, and to finish the race strong and victorious. Many of us know that often quoted verse from Romans 5:3-4 “we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Why do we know that verse? The answer is because we have all suffered at some time or another and it’s during those times that we must look to God and his promises for help. In the Bible, David suffered greatly as he was pursued by King Saul. Read Psalm 18 for a glimpse of the relationship that was wrought out of loneliness, depression, and isolation. Without that journey, if David had skipped the years running from Saul and landed straight on the throne, do you think he would have become a man after God’s own heart? Without his reliance on God, I’m not so sure young David would have made it past Goliath! It’s also from our experiences that we learn to trust God. When we are baby Christians we hear the promises of the Bible but it is through our lives and it’s events that we see how God works to fulfill them. The more we see Him work, the more we are able to trust him and step out in faith. Though we may venture into unknown territory, just like the Israelites wandering in the desert, God promises in Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Be assured, whatever journey you embark upon, Your Father is right there with you, waiting to lead you out of the dark. Finally, it is as properly “trained” Christians that have the promise to finish strong and victorious, ultimately claiming the prize of Heaven. (See 1 Corinthians 9:24 and Philippians 3:14) We are victorious when we use God’s presence in our lives to make better choices, to persevere when we want to give up, and to claim the promises of the Bible as our own. This happens while you are your journey as a son or daughter of God. It isn’t something that happens over night for “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” but in order for him to carry on that work, you must embrace the journey and the lessons it contains.

May the Lord bless the days of your journey with Him and may you always be guided by the love of His sacrifice.

Randsburg Inn to set up a check in his fine establishment Back in camp all sorts of people were arriving. The Neals made an appearance now that Jerry is up and walking on his recuperating knee. Alma Puvogel showed me some geocaches on her laptop that she and Pick would try to find. Theta Eikenberry came out of her family’s long trailer to walk their dog (on a leash!). Others would begin arriving Friday evening until camp swelled to about 35 rigs. Mitch and Thomas Kelly were rained out of a motocross so they diverted to the Poker Run. The Herts and Hughes came down from Visalia and Porterville. Pam Hughes had a dinette table piled up with yarn ready for a rainy-day project. The Mills showed up and Michael didn’t look like he had a broken collarbone. Nei-ther did Doug McPherson but he’s broken his so many times it just looks natural that way, Saturday morning dawned cloudy but without rain. A large crowd gathered for the riders meeting where Blane Bockhacker started us out with prayer. Poker Run rules were explained along with proper trail etiquette and how to behave in Randsburg. I explained that all dogs were supposed to be on leashes as several romped freely nearby and a large groan went up when generator hours were mentioned. I thought it was ‘10 to 10 (it’s actually 9 to 10) but apparently some people need their electric appliances earlier in the morning so that rule chafes a bit. Riders be-gan leaving in groups on one of two routes; easy or intermediate. The easy route followed a powerline road to an easy trail into Randsburg with one side trip to find a check. The intermediate route went thru the Rand Moun-tains to Randsburg and then followed the easy route back to camp. Both routes had checks in old crumbling mines that shouldn’t be entered. I waited until most groups had left and then rode up trail 83 on the intermedi-ate loop. In the Rand Mountains fog shrouded the ridgeline and Government Peak was invisible. This caused some groups to miss the first check until they figured out the problem and turned back. I directed the Dahlins towards the peak and I watched Steve, Jennifer, Taylor and Austin (along with friend Blake Steffen) disappear into the fog. Austin is 6 yrs. old and rode a CRF5O on the entire 30 miles of the intermediate loop! I caught up with Randy Hettema’s group at Check 2. They were about to leave without finding the bonus check so I advised them to check their directions carefully. Bruce Wright looked one mine three times and still didn’t find the paper sack containing the folded-up cards until someone insisted that the check was indeed in the mine. Dean Mills was among a few who passed Check 2 without stopping, I wouldn’t tell him where the check was; only that he had missed it, Many Rutsters were having lunch in Randsburg on the halfway point of their ride. I sat with the Dahlins in the White House Saloon and had a cheeseburger and some burnt onion rings. As I was about to leave a thunderstorm came through and rain began pouring down. Jennifer said a little prayer and the rain soon stopped, allowing us a nice ride back to camp where Barbara Beaumont was checking riders in and writing down poker hands. A few good cards were found; Ryan Skidmore came in with three 10’s for the high hand in among the teens while Thomas Kelly drew low hand. Abe Baumann and Rick Puvogel scrapped for low hands among the men 20+ with Abe’s lower extra card the deciding factor. Doug Hughes’ flush looked real good for awhile until Dean Mills opened up four queens on Sunday. Edward Flacks had high hand for awhile among the 9yr. olds until Danielle Lambert found a straight on the easy loop on Sunday. Edward rode again on Sunday and brought back low hand so he still wound up with a trophy! In the 10-12 class, Devin Burkhart had two-pair for high and Corbin Hitchen threw out his only face card for low hand. Devin’s mom Dana also will get a trophy for her three kings and Pam Hughes knitted low hand among the ladies 20+. Saturday night we enjoyed a rain-free evening with worship led by Mike Browning, a word from scripture about the mission of Jesus seeking and saving the lost, and some mighty fine marshmallows cooked up by Taylor and Blake (thanks, guys), Sunday morning Abe led a morning devotional about the role of faith in developing a personal relationship with God and then various groups either went trail riding or rode the poker run again. Chuck Robison showed up with a new Honda and hooked up with the Jansens for the Lost Mine and then trailed along with the Halls and the Wiltseys to Fremont Peak, Abe and Eric led a group towards Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel and found Burro’s cabin in a sad state now that nobody Is taking care of it, I chatted with Christina Massari at the Miners Union Café in Rands-burg. I think she had a chocolate shake while I chose strawberry. Our neighbors the Lamberts rode the easy loop on Sunday. Dad Ron hit a rock that put him on the ground and in the emergency room later that day. All is well as of this writing except the high cost of KTM plastic. Mitch Kelly and Jason Stevens rode around with me to clean up all the checks. We talked to a guy in Randsburg that put on a huge poker run the same weekend (600 riders) in the California City area. Their grand prize was a new quad with second, third and fourth receiving cash prizes. Our poker run was a little different We gave all the entry money away to a family that wasn’t even there! We seek rewards in the heavenly realm by supporting the ministry of the Holts in Georgia (of former USSR). Let’s all pray for the fruitfulness of God through the Holts in that part of the world.
