(1) Limit raise in hearts. This was the auction when Debbie Drury of

Vero Beach FL was North and Gail Nye of PalmCity FL was South. With a fine fit for partner’sdiamonds, Nye found a bid that most playerswouldn’t think of – that 4♣ bid. Of course that gother partner off to the right opening lead – a club.Nye ruffed and then she made a nice play to gowith her nice bid – she underled her ♦A. Drury (norelation to the author of the Drury Convention)won with the king. She cashed the ♠A to set thecontract, then led another club when Nye followedto the ♠A with the deuce. That was a two-set worthall 38 matchpoints.

Deep Finesse said that the maximum in heartsagainst perfect defense was nine tricks. Rightagain!

But most declarers made a lot more tricks thanthat. Without the club bid, it isn’t easy for North tolead a club. All that brings us to a tale of woe fromBrian Senior of England, who is one of the editorsfor the World Bridge Federation Daily Bulletins. Itis typical of Senior that he tells of how he wentwrong instead of how bright he might be. This wasthe auction:

West North East SouthPass 2♠!

Pass Pass 3♣ 3♦3♥ 4♠ 5♥ All Pass

Senior was North and his partner was NigelBird, also of England.

The play was over very swiftly. Senior cashedthe ♠A, his partner’s suit, and Bird followed withthe discouraging deuce. So Senior switched to the♦10, won by Bird’s ace, but that was the end of thedefense – 5♥ bid and made.

Senior has two points to make about all this.First he strongly criticized himself. “I should

have given my lead at trick two a little morethought,” he said. “Partner obviously wanted me toswitch, but clubs looked wrong – look at thoseclubs in dummy. So diamonds looks right. But notthe 10! I should have played the ♦K to see whatpartner played. He would have followed with thedeuce. Then of course I would have led a clubbecause he denied both spades and diamonds. Hewould have ruffed and we would have beaten thecontract.”

His second point concerns his partner’sbidding. “I think partner should have doubled 5♥.That certainly would have got me thinking – mypartner opened with a weak two-bid and now he’sdoubling. He had already shown two suits, so heprobably was 6-5 in spades and diamonds. If hehad two singletons he wouldn’t double, so therewould have to be only one possible answer – hehad two trumps and no clubs. Now as long as I wasawake I would find the club lead and 5♥ goesdown.”

‘I was right, Ralph’By Barry Rigal

Deep Finesse is an excellent time-savingdevice for the would-be analyst. At the table mypartner, Ralph Cohen (even though mostcharitable) surely raised an eyebrow when I passedhis 3♥ overcall of West’s 1NT opener. I apologizedafter he made four on a diamond lead. But I’mgetting ahead of my story. This was the deal fromsecond final from the three North Americanchampionships Saturday.

After winning the ♦A and frowning abouthaving to play the king on it, Cohen advanced the♥J in an attempt to set up an entry to dummy, butWest ducked. But then Cohen led a spade to theking and ace, and West was toast. No matter whathe led he had to give away a trick and let Cohentake 10 tricks.

But on review I saw according to Deep Finessethat nine tricks was the limit for us in hearts. On anopening spade lead, West has to return a diamondand then duck the ♥J. Now declarer can do nobetter than to try the ♣K. West wins the ace, cashesanother club and gets out with a diamond. Later hecollects the fourth defensive trick with the trumpking.

There you are, Ralph – I was right all along!

And if pard ducks the first club, declarer can play another round of clubs and reachthe same position. Does any opening lead break upthis squeeze?”

Yes, says Deep Finesse – a spade. North’s jackgoes to the ace and declarer has to set up clubtricks. He crosses to a diamond and leads a club.North probably ducks, but declarer goes back withanother diamond and leads another club. Northwins and leads a second spade, setting up South’squeen and breaking up the squeeze.

If it hadn’t been for a heat wave that swept thecontinent in the summer of 2003, the first EuropeanOpen Championships would have been hailed as anunqualified success – certainly the view of the ACBLmembers who won championships in Menton, on theFrench Riviera.

Now the European Bridge League is preparingfor the second tournament open to all comers, and canoffer the assurances that go with a completely air-conditioned playing facility on Tenerife, the CanaryIslands, the venue for the championships.

Alejandro Sanz, who represents the CanaryIslands in the U.S. and parts of South America, saidanyone who visits his homeland won’t bedisappointed.

The islands are part of Spain, and Sanz reportsthat of the 12 national parks in that country, six are inthe Canary Islands. Spain’s tallest mountain, Teide, islocated on Tenerife as well.

The tournament schedule is the same as inMenton: Mixed Teams, Mixed Pairs; Open, Women’sand Senior Teams, and Open, Women’s and SeniorPairs, and side games.

For information about the Canary Islands and thetournament, visit www.tenerife2005.net orwww.canaryislands-usa.com. In the U.S., you mayphone 305-779-4967 for information. Other web siteswith information are www.eurobridge.org,www.worldbridge.org and http://bridge.ecats.co.uk/You may also e-mail [email protected].

All events will be transnational – players neednot be from the same country – and there will be norestrictions on the numbers of entries per nationalbridge organization.

ACBL members may register for the tournamentthrough Headquarters in Memphis. The deadline forregistering is April 20.

Check the web site for information about hotelrates and entry fees and the various discounts thatapply.

ACBL winners in Menton were Jeff Meckstrothand Eric Rodwell, Open Pairs, and Roy Welland,Christal Henner-Welland, Robert Levin, Jill Levin,Michael Rosenberg and Debbie Rosenberg, MixedTeams.

The best way to getaround – rent a car

The Marriott World Center is a terrific resorthotel and nearly ideal for an NABC, but with thegolf course and development around the hotel, players will not be able to walk to nearbyrestaurants if they choose not to dine in any of thefine restaurants in the hotel. Minimal cab fares torestaurants will be about $12, so with the greatvalues available with rental cars, we strongly urgeyou to rent a car and take advantage of the freeparking offered by the hotel to bridge players.

For your convenience, Enterprise Rent-a-Car islocated in the South Tower and is offering a 15%discount off their already low rental rates for bridgeplayers. Stop by or contact them at house extension85241. Hours are 8-6 on Friday, 8-2 on Saturday,9-1 on Sunday and 8-5 Monday - Thursday.

Brits enjoy our NABCPlayers from Alaska

and Northern Canadamight have thought theywould win the prize forcoming farthest in the299er room. But DaleThomas and Keith Goswellhave them beat! They camefrom Reading, England, about 30 miles fromLondon.

Dale, a pilot, comes toCentral Florida severaltimes a year. He enjoys theweather and golf. He heardabout this tournament andtalked his friend andpartner of four years intocoming along. Keith hasnever been in the U.S. before.

They play the standard British system, Acol with weak INT openings and four-cardmajors, though they have adopted the American weak two openings in the major suits. “Wehave to Alert almost everything,” comments Dale.

They also have observed that American points are easier to earn than the British greenpoints. Comfortable in our 299er games, Keith has 40 green points, Dale about 30.

The men plan to play frequently during the tournament and then stay on for a few moredays to play golf. They describe it as a “fortnight’s holiday,” what we would call a two-week vacation.

Calling the DirectorMartha McGhee, co-chair of the 1998

Orlando NABC, was IN chairman at the 1992Orlando NABC.

Call the who ...? The director! It’s okay tocall the director. If fact, if you don’t, you maylose your right to call him later if you aredamaged.

The director is the one who sold you an entry, the one who passed out the board, the one whopassed out the hand records and said, “Duplicate, please.” The director is the one who organizedthe players and the boards so that everything runssmoothly at the right time, the right speed and theright direction.

The director is the one you need help from ifand when an irregularity happens at your table. The director gives rulings pertaining to the Lawsof Duplicate Contract Bridge.

In order for the conditions of the game to befair, everyone has to follow the same rules. Thedirector is familiar with these rules and isresponsible for seeing that they are correctlyapplied.

The director is also the one who calls therounds when it is time for you to meet your newopponents. The director puts the results of eachboard into the computer and posts the computerprint-out of results after each session.

When you need a director, raise your handand call out “Director, please” — loudly enoughfor him to hear but not so loudly that it disturbsthe other players. When the director arrives atyour table, he will listen to what happened andexplain to the players the ruling that pertains tothe irregularity.

Some rulings have several options, so if youdon’t understand them fully, don’t hesitate to askfor them to be repeated.

Since the conditions at each table must beduplicated as much as possible, all the playersmust adhere to the same set of rules. Thedirector’s main objective is to make the game asfair as possible for all the players involved, whileensuring that everyone has an enjoyable time.

Irregularities that may happen at your table

for which you must call the director: a lead out ofturn, an insufficient bid, a revoke, a card missingfrom a hand, a bid or pass out of turn, failure toAlert an artificial bid, changes of call, disagreements of tricks won, claims with trumpsoutstanding or disputed claims, bidding errors, etc.

The director is your friend. Do not hesitate tocall him or her. In fact, if you don’t call the director, you may lose the right to call him later when youdiscover you have been damaged.

You (West) lead the ♥2. East wins the firstheart cheaply and cashes the ♥A K. Plan yourdefense.

East’s 2♥weak jump overcall is the equivalentof a weak two opening bid. In other words, itshows a presentable six-card suit (three honors ortwo honors with the 9 thrown in for good measure)and about 6-9 high-card points.

You make the obvious singleton lead (somepeople love singleton leads so much that they leadthem even when they don’t have them). Partnerwins the first heart as cheaply as possible (playingthe 7 if dummy plays low) and cashes the ♥K.

It is clear that you will be able to make twodiscards on the ♥K A. When contemplatingdiscards, always consider discarding from yourshortest suit — in this case, diamonds.

You can see that you can discard both the ♦KQ. Should you? Yes. Why not? If you discard bothdiamonds, you can ruff the diamond return anddefeat the contract.

If you keep your diamonds and discard clubs, you may or may not take a trick in diamonds. (Asit happens, you won’t because declarer has asingleton.)

Point to remember: When partner is cashing anumber of tricks, allowing you to make a discardor two, consider discarding from your short suit. Ifyou can void yourself in a suit while partner stillhas the lead, you can then ruff partner’s return inyour now-void suit. Not a bad idea.

Sacramento. He settled in his current home townafter going there to college – Cal State-Sacramento,where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees incommunications studies.

Smith encountered bridge in the late Sixties.Married at the time – he is a bachelor now – Smithsays it seemed that a lot of his friends played thegame.

His introduction to bridge was through SylviaClark, who was offering bridge lessons at a localdepartment store. After Smith and his wifecompleted the lessons, Clark pointed them to thelocal duplicate club.

Smith was immediately hooked, and he joinedthe ACBL in 1972.

After working for the state of California for 10years as a personnel analyst, Smith went into realestate. Today, he is a real estate broker and part-time teacher at his alma mater.

Smith has always enjoyed playing bridge, buthe had a strong attraction to the administrative sideof the game. Only two years after joining theACBL, he was elected to the board of directors ofUnit 505 in Sacramento.

With that election, he recalls, he was appointedto the District 21 board because of what he couldoffer that group as a new player.

Smith has held a variety of administrativepositions through the years, including Districtpresident in 1977-78 and president of the WesternConference (Districts 17, 20, 21 and 22).

The new ACBL President says he has alwaysfound the administrative side of the game to be asrewarding as earning masterpoints. “I’m the firstPresident in quite a while,” he says, “who couldplay in the Red Ribbon Pairs.”

He isn’t worried about it, however. “Someday,” he says, “I’ll get to catch up.”

Some of the catching up, he says, will be withhis favorite partner, girlfriend Barbara Bacon ofCleveland OH. Smith says he also enjoys playingwith District 21 President Bruce Blakely and otherdistrict officers.

Smith says he plans to take the grand tour ofthe ACBL districts and probably will play in one ortwo regionals a month as he spreads the word aboutthe good that’s happening in the ACBL.

Smith acknowledges that there are areas wherework is needed, but he believes it’s better to spreada message of goodwill to the membership.

When he isn’t playing bridge or working,Smith spends time rooting for the SacramentoKings of the National Basketball Association. “I’ma season ticket holder,” he says.

interaction with adults. “That,” says Alyse, “feedsthe soul.”

Alyse describes herself as “a very busy mom”and she teaches bridge as well. Pat works for thestate of Alaska in oil and gas leasing.

After her big win in the newcomer game,Bridget was on cloud nine. She says learningbridge “was kind of hard,” but she enjoys the gamebecause “I really like math.”

Bridget also enjoys the opportunities bridgehas provided. “It’s fun,” she says, “to travel andplay bridge with people you haven’t met before.”

When she isn’t playing bridge, Bridget enjoyssoccer and playing the violin. Her older brothersare also violin players, and Cooper also plays bassand mandolin, while Sean plays bass.

Sean says he enjoys bridge because “it’s fun,and it exercises your brain.”

Cooper, showing wisdom beyond his years, has a good perspective on the game: “It’schallenging, and you can keep on learning newthings no matter how good you get.”

For Alyse, it’s all about socializing. That’s whyshe and her family traveled 3815 miles to play.

“I would like to see more folks seeking waysto interact with others,” she says.

ZT — are we doing better? The ACBL Board of Directors — citing a

commitment to “improving acceptable playerbehavior at all times” — adopted Zero Tolerance asACBL policy in 1998.

Unacceptable behavior has decreased – the goal, however, is to eliminate unacceptable behavior asmuch as possible.

Please report conduct that is unacceptable whilekeeping in mind that we must be tolerant of otherpeople in general — and bridge players in particular. Also report conduct that is outstanding or refreshing.

Commendable behavior includes (but is notlimited to):

• Being a good “host” or “guest” at the table.• Greeting others in a friendly manner.• Praising the bidding and/or play of the

opponents.• Having two clearly completed convention cards

readily available to the opponents. This is also aregulation.

Unacceptable behavior includes (but is notlimited to):

• Badgering, rudeness, insinuations, intimidation, profanity, threats or violence.

• Negative comments concerning opponents’ orpartner’s play or bidding.

• Gloating over good results.• Constant and gratuitous lessons and analyses at

the table.• Loud and disruptive arguing with a director’s

ruling.If you experience someone exhibiting

discourteous behavior or being other than civil, please call a tournament director immediately. If youfeel that there was a very serious breech of discipline,in addition to the resolution by the tournamentdirector at the table, please discuss the problemdirectly with the Director-in-Charge.

The director will then attempt to determine thefacts. If he establishes there was unacceptablebehavior, an immediate 1/4-board disciplinarypenalty (3 IMPs in team games) shall be assigned toall offenders.

This may involve any one or all four players atthe table, regardless of who initiated the unacceptablebehavior. If both members of a partnership are guilty, the penalties are cumulative (1/4 board each = 1/2board or 3 IMPs each = 6 IMPs).

If it is determined that a second offense hasoccurred in the same event, the offender(s) shall beejected from future competition in that event.

An offender removed from an event shall bedeemed not to have played in the event, nomasterpoints will be awarded and no refunds will bemade.

Regardless of who may have initiatedunacceptable behavior, all offenses are punishable.Retaliatory behavior is a punishable offense.Frivolous accusations will also be considered asoffenses under this policy.

West leads the ♥J. East follows with the 2. Whatis your plan?

When Richard Pavlicek and his son, Richard Jr.,won the Bobby Nail Life Master Open Pairs thisweekend, it reminded me of my favorite partner whenI was a teenager: my dad. He was the first Life Masterof Jersey City NJ, where I grew up. Once my dadmade a play after reading about it in a Marshall Milesbook (All 52 Cards), but more about this later. Lookat what happened at the Pavliceks’ table on this deal.

When the elder Pavlicek was North, he declared3NT. East led the ♦6 and West put in the 10, trying tofalsecard declarer. Pavlicek won, led a club to the ace

and called for a diamond. West played the 7, andPavlicek finessed, putting in the 8. He was now up to8 tricks and led the ♦K to West’s ace, establishing hisninth trick. Crunch time. If West shifts to a low spade, the defenders take four spade tricks to defeat thecontract. But a low spade shift would be a losing playif North held the king or jack, so West exited safelywith a diamond. Declarer now had nine tricks.

Could East have helped West by signaling suit-preference while following suit? He could. Afterleading the ♦6, he should follow with the 5 and thenthe 4, high-low, asking for a spade shift. He shouldalso play the ♣7, his highest club when following inclubs, trying to scream for a spade shift.

Now let’s go to Marshall Miles’ table, where hedeclared 3NT from the South position on the auctionshown in the preview at the beginning of this article.

Here, West led the ♥J and Miles won with thequeen as East followed with the 2. Miles led adiamond to the king, returned to hand with the ♣Aand led another diamond. West went up with the aceand considered shifting to spades, but decided thatMiles probably held the king, since he had bid 3NTwith nothing in diamonds and needed something forhis bid. So West continued hearts and Miles made 10tricks! Again, East could have helped West to find thespade shift by signaling suit-preference whenfollowing suit to declarer’s lead (instead of givingcount). East must play the ♦6 and ♦5, indicating the♠K.

Answer to the preview problem: Win the firsttrick with the ♥A! This is the play my dad had mademany years ago. When you lead diamonds, West willprobably win and continue with a low heart to hispartner’s “queen.” OOPS! I don’t blame Miles formissing this play — it’s been 50 years since he wroteabout it in his book.

Lots of happy faces— they’re new LMs

Annette Kantarincic of Lake Worth FL has tworeasons to rejoice today – she became a Life Masteryesterday and she also became a Bronze LifeMaster (more than 500 points). Now that she’sretired, she has the time to go to tournaments, andthat’s what she has been doing to get the necessarygold and red points. She came here needing 6.69,and she picked them a couple at a time, culminatingwith the award she received in the CompactKnockouts Consolation.

Her partner was Gwendolyn Eckman of PalmBeach FL, who is closing in on becoming a LifeMaster. They play together every Monday at theLake Worth club. Their partnership is six years old.Their partners in the Compact Knockouts were RonRatchford and Al Kober of New Hampshire.

Here’s another double reason for doublerejoicing — one partner became a Life Master andthe other is now a Bronze Life Master. The new LMis Janellen Lott of Marathon FL. She needed 2.05points and she won 2.85. “It’s worth the six-hourdrive from the Keys,” she said. Her partner wasMary Colby, and she went over the 500-point mark.

Here’s a husband-wife combination that madethe grade together in yesterday’s Swiss Teams. They are Robert and Melissa Baker of WestHarrison NY, who have been playing together forabout two and a half years. Their teammates wereTom and Diane Greble of Chappaqua NY,.

We mentioned yesterday that Rick Schneider ofCharleston NC and Joseph Sinkey of Athens GAbecame Life Masters, but at the time we had nofurther information. It turns out they were partnersand went over the top together in the Knockouts.Since they live so far apart, they play together onlyat tournaments, and they’ve been doing just that forthe past two years. They’ve done well here, butthey have one sad story. In the knockout where theywent over, they finished the final in a tie. “We werehappy to be Life Masters, but we were unhappy thatwe lost the victory by 2 IMPs in overtime.”

Jerry Robie of Leesburg FL went into theknockouts with the three men who taught him howto play, and he won enough points to earn his goldcard. His teammates were Gary Zogg (his partner),Jack Bendick and Ron Foreman, all of Leesburg. All three have been teaching bridge for about two

and a half years. Robie has been playing bridge forless than three years. He won more than 200 pointswith his regular partner, Larry Noyes of Leesburg.

Ruby Laudig of Paris FL helped her husbandLarry make the grade in the Knockouts. Theirpartners were Don and Sherry Freeze of St.Petersburg FL.

George Lowery of Ft. Myers Beach FL neededa lot of golds when he came here – 13.61 – but hegot them all in one day yesterday. He won 7.79 inthe Morning Knockouts and another 6.34 in theafternoon. His partner was Hilary Hayden ofMahone Bay NS. Their partners were Bill Ezell ofDes Moines IA and Raj Nayar of San Antonio TX

The points she earned in two Friday knockoutevents were enough to make Mary Southwick ofLisle IL a Life Master. Her partner was DaveAnthony of Fort Myers FL, and their partners wereLynne Schomaeker of Fort Myers and Jane Stoiberof Putnam Bay, OH.

Phyllis Tate of Austin TX made the grade in theOpen Swiss Teams yesterday. Her partner wasLinda Anthony of Austin, and their partners wereBill Muse of Harnell NY and Liz Meacham ofCastile NY

Bud Hampshire of Poquoson VA earned hisgold card playing with Lin Veasey. Theirteammates were Gerald Kantor and Scott Hiller.

Keith White of Fort Myers went over the top instyle. He won the Friday Stratified Open Pairs witha score of 420 on a 312 average. He and his partner,Donald Blum, finished three and a half boardsahead of second.

They placed second in the Bobby Nail LifeMaster Open Pairs: Jonathan Green and MarkAquino.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests thatplayers tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at thesame time.

When making an Announcement, use theAnnouncement word — such as “transfer” — andtap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid shouldmake sure his opponents are aware that an Alert orAnnouncement has been made.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names ofeach member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequentround after convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing withthe next round and continuing until the restriction islifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at thediscretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

Goodwill MessageToday is Goodwill Day and my co-chairs and I

invited all members of the National GoodwillCommittee to a reception from 5-7 p.m. in theAnaheim Room. We hope to see you there.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

Pre-Alert formsIf your partnership plays special overcalls, you

must fill out a pre-Alert/disclosure form and make itavailable to your opponents when you play in eventsthat allow Mid-Chart and Super-Chart conventions.

This applies to NABC+, regional or higherknockouts and Flight A Swiss games. Look for thelight blue forms on the table where convention cardsare available.

What do you bid?It happened at a friendly two-table bridge club

where “social” is more important than bridge. Onelady came from the other table to ask advice abouta hand. She said, “Dotty bid 1♣. What should Ibid?” She showed us her hand. ♠ AKQ, ♥ KQ, ♦Kx, ♣ AJxxxx of Clubs. We had severalsuggestions including 5♣. She protested, “ButDotty isn’t my partner!” Beth Beattie, St. Louis
