Where’s the queen? The only problem for declarer on this deal was

the ♣Q. Naturally he went on a fishing expeditionto find it.

♠ A K 10 8 6 4♥ 2♦ 10 2♣ K J 10 9

♠ Q J 9 7 5♥ K 5 4 3♦ A♣ A 8 7

West North East South1♠

West led a diamond to the ace, and declarercrossed to dummy with a trump to ruff the otherdiamond. He went back to dummy and led thesingleton heart. East played the jack, and declarernot unnaturally decided to duck. East led anotherheart, ruffed in dummy. Declarer came back tohand with a trump and led another heart to ruff, anddown came the ace from West.

Declarer now had a reasonable count on thehand. West had one spade and three hearts. He hadeither five or six diamonds, so he also had to haveeither three or four clubs. So, following the odds,he took the club finesse against West – and lost hisslam. This was the full deal:

♠ A K 10 8 6 4♥ 2♦ 10 2♣ K J 10 9

♠ 3 ♠ 2♥ A Q 8 7 ♥ J 10 9 6♦ K J 9 7 6 5 ♦ Q 8 4 3♣ 3 2 ♣ Q 6 5 4

♠ Q J 9 7 5♥ K 5 4 3♦ A♣ A 8 7

See why declarer got the count wrong? MagyMohan, a professional player from Mexico, hadfalsecarded the ♥A on the third round of the suit, deliberately setting up declarer’s ♥K and givinghim a chance to go wrong on the count as well. Sheknew a discard on the ♥K wouldn’t help declarer –he had to get rid of two clubs from dummy, not one.

What an incredible falsecard! Who would everread West for four hearts when she plays the ace?How did Magy ever think of that play? One playerwasn’t surprised – her husband, John Mohan.“She’s a great player, and almost nobody knows it,”he said.

Can you hear me now?John Onstott has played bridge for long enough

to know the sound of doom when he hears it.On this deal from the Senior Knockout Teams,

he paid attention to the opponents and saved histeam a huge number of IMPs.

Beyer agreed. “It was intense, but we learned alot and honed our talents.”

Directors usually are assigned either to acomputer to input scores or to the floor to handlerulings and disturbances. “I much prefer walkingthe floor to punching keys,” said Beyer. “I reallyenjoy being on the floor, and I just love laws andrules.”

Both enjoy the reception they have receivedfrom their fellow directors. “They become likefamily very quickly,” said Beyer.

“I like the complexities and the variety,” saidPerkins, who also prefers the floor. “It’s wonderfulto see what happens behind the scenes. I loveseeing how everything works – how everythinggoes together.”

Perkins got interested in bridge in college. Hewas part of a group who liked to play games, buteverything changed when they tried bridge. “Theother games were too easy. I loved the challengethat bridge offered.”

Beyer grew up around party bridge at home, but she took up the game herself when she joined agroup of women taking bridge lessons at thecountry club. The game grabbed her right away. “Iwouldn’t say that I’m a competitive person, but Iguess a lot of other people would.”

Bee Ronske and Jill Lundberg, who have beenteaching bridge in the school for two years.

“They’re amazing,” Lundberg said. “Theyremember everything. And the bonus is that now allthe parents want to learn.” Her grandson, Dalton, 7,is one of her students.

Ten-year-old Andrew Schutte confirmed thathe had sat his folks down for a lesson, lamentingthey weren’t quite ready for the game.

“My parents play spades and I’m trying toteach them bridge, but they just don’t get thebidding,” he said.

The students enjoy the game for the samereasons cited by other players.

“It’s fun,” said Elaine Saso, 10, adding quickly,“and it’s educational.”

“Yeah, it’s educational,” added Tyler Woodhull.“You just don’t realize it because it’s so much fun.”

Bidding and play was spirited if somewhathesitant. “Now play the ace, right?” said Dalton, simultaneously instructing the dummy whilereceiving a confirming nod from a kibitzer. A fewtricks later, he had made a small slam. “I won 12,”he exclaimed. “Sweet!” (Lessons on gloating canwait for now.)

The youngsters played 10 deals in a home-style

Swiss, changing teammates for each round. Allended up with their first masterpoints, with .70 redfor the winners, playing three-handed: Elaine,Safeena Kassoo, 10; and Victoria Edstrom, 8.

The students all received free tee shirts andcards, and Chief Tournament Director Rick Beyedonated their $5 student memberships.

Lundberg said that the Internet has beenessential to sustaining the students’ interest in thegame. “Now that you can play bridge on thecomputer, they can play with each other at home,”she said. All but Mitchell Koebke, whose parentshave turned off cable television and the Internet tohelp their sons focus on education. He still will beable to practice at home, however. Mitchell isteaching his folks and 7-year-old brother to play.Other students in the game were Max Schuman andMason Smith, both 8. Bronze Life Master

Joo-hee Janicki of Markham ON won aknockout event earlier this week, and that gave herenough points to become a Bronze Life Master(500 points). Her partner was Jean Ranzoni ofToronto.

Ames led 82-55 with 32 deals to be played, andRosenkranz wiped out the entire lead to get to evenwith a quarter to go. This deal helped Rosenkranzto a double-digit swing.

He alsoteaches bridge and is a director – and at the OrlandoNABC he even did some caddying, working thesecond final session of the Marsha May SternbergWomen’s Board-a-Match Teams. “I did a greatjob,” he said proudly.

The win was the first North Americanchampionship for all four.

Egan and Beery are in business together inLincoln NE as marketing consultants. Untilrecently, Beery was president and chief executiveofficer of an insurance company and Egan was hisassistant. He sold his stock and signed a non-compete consulting agreement with the company, and now he and Egan play a lot of bridge and golf.

Koch, of St. Cloud MN, is an attorneyspecializing in civil practice. He and Ames firstplayed together in the late Sixties in the President’sPairs at the Spring NABC in Cleveland. “We camein fifth,” says Ames, “and we were really proud ofourselves.”

Along the way to the Senior KO victory, theAmes team knocked off a series of favored teams.First there was the Carolyn Lynch team, whichincluded many-time world champion Bobby Wolffand Dan Morse. Ames took a huge lead andsurvived a furious late charge by Lynch to win by 2IMPs.

Next up was John Onstott and company, another all-star squad. Ames, trailing by 8 IMPsheading into the final set, rallied for a 131-125victory.

There was no relief for the foursome, however,as they faced the veteran George Rosenkranz lineupnext. After 48 boards, the match was tied, but Amesput together a string of results good enough towithstand a 14-IMP loss on the next-to-last deal asthey moved on with a 152-150 win.

In the final, it was the Bennett team standing intheir way. Bennett’s squad was essentially the sameone that won the Senior Swiss Teams in New Yorklast summer: Fran Dickman, Chris Larsen, MikeShuman, Gene Simpson and Bruce Noda. All butLarsen were on the team in New York.

Bennett jumped out to a 38-21 lead, but Amescut it back to 8 IMPs at the half, only to see Amesmove ahead 93-89 after three quarters and then onto victory.

Director’s Ruling: The director ruled thatsince passing 3♣ doubled was not a logicalalternative, the result would not be adjusted, eventhough there was unauthorized informationavailable to South.

The Appeal: Only East attended the hearing.East’s contention was that a pass of 3♣ doubledwas a logical alternative: if North’s 3♣ bid showedclubs, then South had a good hand for playingclubs. Furthermore, East said that his double of 3♣was a card-showing double, not a penalty double.Accordingly, according to East, South could not tellfrom the auction that North did not have a hand ofa 4-2-1-6 pattern. Hence, on the basis of theauction, pass was a logical alternative.

The Decision: The committee tried to discoverwhat the North-South partnership understandingwas. From what the committee could determinefrom the screening director and East, N-S hadneither system notes nor convention card marksindicating the precise meaning of the 2NT bid. IfSouth felt that his 2NT bid was clearly for red suitsper partnership understanding, then North’sexplanation of 2NT constituted UI for South. If thiswere the case, then passing 3♣ might have been alogical alternative. However, at the pre-hearingscreening, South stated that he always meant to bid

3♦ to show the red suits if North were to bid 3♣.Therefore, the committee found that passing 3♣doubled was not a logical alternative. Thecommittee also felt that it was unlikely that Northwould have a club suit worth bidding at this pointsince he did not pre-empt clubs over West’sopening club bid.

The committee asked its chairperson to counselthe N-S pair about full disclosure of theiragreements since this appeal would not have beenmade if North had said that the 2NT bid was for theminors but correctable to being for the red suits.

Dissent (by Aaron Silverstein): I believe thatwithout evidence that the conventional agreementfor N-S is that with red suits they show minors andconvert (which the offending side never evenclaimed), the 3♣ bid must be treated as natural. Forthat reason, the contract should be changed to 3♣doubled, down eight. Without the explanation it ispossible that the final contract would have been 3♣doubled. On a trump lead down eight is the naturalresult.

South’s testimony that he would alwaysconvert 3♣ to 3♦ is self-serving and should bediscounted. No matter how much one believes andrespects South, his professed state of mind isirrelevant.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Table Talk Bridge Cartoonscopyright Jude Goodwin

New partnershipworks – 70% game

Two players with fewer than 100 points who had never playedtogether before scored a 70% game in the 0-300 Pairs Thursday night.Govind Narayan of Richmond VA, who works for a finance company, and Larry Simon of Lake Odessa MI, retired from General Motors, got together just 10 minutes before the 7:30 game got under way.Narayan had 99 points and Simon had 86. Narayan actually flew inyesterday just in time to get into the game.

They exchanged phone numbers so they can get together aspartners again some time.

Their favorite deal was a slam they bid that no one else bid andmade. Simon had to overcome a 4-0 trump break, but he found hisway through.

Pass 2♦ (1) Pass 2♥Pass 3NT All Pass

(1) Transfer to hearts.West leads the ♣4. You (East) play the ♣K

which holds the trick. How do you plan to defeatthis contract?

The bidding is normal. North shows 9-14 high-card points and five hearts. South’s final passnormally indicates a doubleton heart. There aresome hands holding three hearts that should pass3NT but the majority correct to 4♥. The defenseshould assume a doubleton heart unless openerthinks a long time before passing.

Also, South’s 1NT opening is correct, thedoubleton heart notwithstanding. If South opens1♦ and hears the expected 1♥ response, what is heto rebid? The hand is much too strong to rebid 1NTor 2♦ and not strong enough to rebid 2NT.

South has “walled” himself in with the 1♦opening. If the doubleton heart scares South, heshould put a diamond honor in with his hearts andcomplain to partner that the lighting in the playingarea is just terrible.

On to the defense: when your ♣K wins trickone, your proper return is the ♣7, the higher of yourtwo remaining clubs. If you had three clubsremaining, you should return your lowest club. Allthis helps partner out tremendously.

Even more helpful is playing the ♥K (to alert

partner of your heart strength) before returning the♣7. If partner wins the ♣7 and returns a heart, yourside will collect the first five tricks.

If you return the ♣7 at trick two, neglecting tohelp partner out, you pay through the nose. Partneris almost sure to duck the second club, allowingyou to keep a third club in case you have an earlyside-suit entry. If partner ducks the second club, declarer races off with nine tricks: five diamonds, three spades and one club. For shame.

Point to remember: Whenever you can helppartner on defense, do so. A thoughtful defendermakes for an appreciative partner.

The Bridge TripBy Gary King

Gary King of Houston is a Silver Life Masterwho writes a column for 299er players in theScorecard, the District 16 publication.

Over the years I have spent time talking withquite literally hundreds, if not thousands, ofstudents about bridge. I talk with prospectiveplayers who are considering beginning lessons andwith rabid duplicate addicts who are consumedwith the game.

What strikes me as most interesting is howmany things are reflected in this game that we playand love so much. In numerous ways, this game islike other sports and even like life itself.

Several years ago I received a telephone callfrom a previous student. She and her partner had adispute about a particular hand and called so that Icould mediate.

We discussed the auction and the hand (she wasa GOOD student because she had the auction andcomplete hand written out including all passes, vulnerability, dealer and every hand whichremarkably had 13 cards).

After a few minutes of discussion she sighedand with a little frustration said, “Do you ever thinkI will get this game?”

How would you answer that question? Haveyou ever felt that way?

My answer was very straightforward. I replied,“You are thinking about this game all wrong!”

There is no Utopia. There is no plateau at

which you arrive and realize that you knoweverything that you need to know. There is noheaven-like existence where you never makemistakes and can play with little or no effort.

You must realize — and learn — that theenjoyment of this game is the trip. Learn to enjoyyour travels along the path to becoming anaccomplished player. Enjoy the scenery, the peopleand the experience.

It is the trip that is the fun. Do not be like thevacationer who is in such a hurry to get to the finaldestination that he views the Grand Canyon fromthe car while passing by.

Stop and take in the enjoyment and pleasurethat this game has to offer. Enjoy the game, enjoythe people, enjoy making good decisions, enjoyyour wins and enjoy the wins of others.

If you recognize areas that need work (in yourown game or in your partnership), make a brief noteand discuss it later. During the play is generally notthe time.

At the very least, wait until the round is overand you have stepped away from the table.

Try to locate a mentor. A mentor should be aplayer with greater experience and one to whomyou have at least regular access (in person, byphone or e-mail). Use the mentor not to teach youbut to help you and partner work out the root causeof problems in your bidding and play. With the rootcause identified, you can then work on those skillson your own.

If you think about this game for a minute, it isbeautiful in its simplicity. The laws of the game donot dictate how you and partner communicate. Atany given time, the methods you choose to use aretotally up to you. You can use whatever tools youthink are in your best interest. It is this flexibility ofdesign that keeps a player continuously striving toimprove. It is also this simplicity that keepsproviding greater and greater enjoyment from theplay.
