With the Ghost of Christmas Past, Ebenezer Scrooge revisits the moments in his life that led him to harden his heart. The Ghost of Christmas Present makes him see the reality of the world around him, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come leads him to the realization that it is possible to change the course of one’s life.
This story – so full of faith in the inherent goodness of humanity – never fails to profoundly affect me. And, of course, we cannot fail to be aware of the similarities between the world we live in and Dickens' London.

A Christmas Carol by Charles DickensAdapted by Michael Shamata
Charles Dickens’s holiday masterpiece “A Christmas Carol” is adapted for stage in this lively play at the Belfry Theatre. The play begins in the present time, with an introduction from the actor playing Jacob Marley. Then, the audience is transported to Victorian England in 1843, where we meet the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his hard-done-by employee Bob Cratchit.
Scrooge quickly establishes himself as an altogether unpleasant and unlikeable businessman. He pronounces that the poor should be in workhouses and prisons or should die to “decrease the surplus population”. He rebuffs his nephew’s invitation to Christmas dinner and declares Christmas itself a “humbug”.
That night, an incredulous Scrooge is haunted by the Spirit of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is warned that he will be visited by a series of three ghosts. In turn, the Spirits of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come arrive and take Scrooge on a journey through time. Scrooge revisits his childhood self and the loss of his first and only love. He learns of Bob Cratchit’s poverty and the poor health of his son, Tiny Tim. Finally, he perceives his own future demise: dying alone, unloved and without any positive legacy. More wealth than he could ever spend; never spent on anything worthwhile.
In the final scenes, Scrooge’s epiphany unleashes his generosity and a new gratitude for life’s blessings. He gives to the poor, he reconciles with his nephew, and he transforms the life of Bob Cratchit and his family.

Lily CaveFan, BelindaLily lives to perform. She has been singing, dancing and acting on stage since age four, appearing in several Four Seasons Musical Theatre produc-tions, most recently playing the lead role of Lucy in Narnia. Over the summer Lily has been sharing her passion for singing and acting by busk-ing on the downtown streets of Victoria. She raised $1,000 for the David Foster Foundation and sang "The Power of the Dream" for David Foster in person on CFAX 1070. For Lily, happiness is making other people happy through her passion for performance.
Daniel FongSpiritDaniel Fong is an emerging artist from the Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts program in Edmonton, and is thrilled to be making his west coast debut with the Belfry. Daniel is fresh off a summer of Shakespeare in the Park, performng in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Puck) in Calgary, and a uni-versity season that included such shows as Thebans, Merrily We Roll Along, Vernon God Little (Jesus), Once on This Island (Agwe), and XANADU. Working on A Christmas Carol has been a magical experience. His thanks go out to Michael, the Belfry, his loving parents, and God Bless us, Everyone!
Jessica HickmanSpiritJessica Hickman works in a variety of artistic mediums. She is a Dancer, Choreographer, Actress, Director, Teacher, and Producer. She currently lives in Victoria, BC but she often travels to the Yukon to continue her work as the Co-Artistic Producer of Open Pit, a non-profit devised theatre company. Currently, Jessica teaches dance at the Canadian College of Performing Arts and has been devoting most of her time to the develop-ment of a new full-length devised physical theatre production called Nowhere Near. Favourite credits include: Speed the Plow (Vancouver), White Christmas (Victoria), Broken (Whitehorse), EXCHANGE: Memories of Movement (Sweden), Countryside Christmas (Chemainus), and It is Written (Calgary). www.jessicahickman.ca

Her credits include Lavinia in Titus Andronicus, Iris in The Tempest, Julia in Zastrozzi, Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac (Stratford Shakespeare Festival); Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice (Citadel Theatre); Raina in Arms and the Man (Blue Bridge Repertory), and performances with Theatre SKAM, Giggling Iguana, Pacific Opera Victoria, Kaleidoscope Theatre, William Head Onstage, and Atomic Vaudeville. Her screen appearances include The L.A. Complex (Much Music), Copper (BBC/Cineflix), Psych (USA Network), the upcoming film Only I..., and the television series 24 Hour Rental (Super Channel). Amanda has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Victoria and a BFA in Acting from the University of Alberta.
Adam LolacherBob Cratchit, Dick WilkinsA graduate from the University of Ottawa's Theatre program, Adam has been working steadily in the theatre, film and TV world for several years. Studying with the likes of Ben Ratner and Warren Robertson, Adam continuously looks to challenge and improve himself on and off stage. Tom McBeathEbenezer ScroogeTom last appeared at the Belfry Theatre in Kevin Loring's 2009 Governor General’s Award winning play Where the Blood Mixes. Previous to that he played Bud in Mesa in 2007. He has just returned from the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto, appearing in Electric Company Theatre’s production of Tear the Curtain. Earlier this year he appeared in Scar Tissue, Dennis Foon's adaptation of Michael Ignatief's novel of the same name, for the Arts Club, and Tad Mosel's All the Way Home, an adaptation of James Agee's novel, A Death In the Family, for the Electric Company Theatre. Tom is celebrating his 40th year in Canadian Theatre. Still here, still working, and still loving it!
Amisha Parikh-FrieseMarthaAmisha is thankful for the opportunity to perform with such a talented cast and crew in her first Belfry production. She has appeared on stage with Kaleidoscope Theatre (The Hobbit, Hana's Suitcase, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Aladdin Jr., Charlotte’s Web), as well as with Puente Theatre (The Pilgrimage of the Nuns of Conceptión). Amisha is in Grade 12 at Esquimalt High and in her spare time dances and plays soccer. She’s happy to play the oldest sister in A Christmas Carol…quite a switch from her theatrical debut 13 years ago in the Broadway tour of Miss Saigon – as a boy!
Ajay Parikh-FriesePeter, BoyAjay is delighted to be in his first production with the Belfry. He’s been busy recently with Pacific Opera’s production of Macbeth and his first year at Reynolds High School. Earlier this year he appeared as a guest star on his first TV show, Mr. Young (YTV/DisneyXD). He has also enjoyed performing with Kaleidoscope Theatre (The Hobbit, Hana's Suitcase, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Best Christmas Pageant Ever), as Flavio in Rodelinda (Pacific Opera Victoria) and as the lead in Oliver! (St. Michael’s University School). In his spare time he enjoys skimboarding, snowboard-ing, singing, and playing with fire.
Simeon Sanford BladesPoor Boy, Ebenezer as a Boy, Tiny TimSimeon has had a flair for the dramatic all his life, but has only recently begun to channel it onto the stage. He discovered a love and talent for acting last year in the role of Humpty Dumpty in Sundance Elementary’s production of Holka Polka (where, incidentally, he delivered the play’s final lines). The middle child in a family of three boys, Simeon has a big heart, an even bigger imagination, and an infectious spirit. Once this produc-tion is over, Simeon plans to buy a model of the Titanic, and become an inventor.

Jan WoodMrs. Dilber, Mrs. FezziwigJan Wood most recently appeared on the Belfry stage in the featured role of the Mother in The Life Inside and in various roles in Half Life. She has acted in Vancouver at Bard on the Beach (All's Well That Ends Well, Richard II, Pericles, As You Like It and Richard III). She has also worked in Edmonton (Citadel Theatre, Theatre Network and Northern Light Theatre) and Calgary (Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects and Lunchbox Theatre). Most recently she has completed a solo script of a contemporary retelling of the myth of Medea to be produced in the spring of 2013. Since 1996 she has been a full-time acting teacher with the Department of Theatre at the University of Victoria. She is the mother of two wonderful teenage girls, Shayna and Anielle, and wife to the delightful Mr. Fezziwig. The four of them have been known to make merry through-out the year.

Michael ShamataAdaptor / DirectorMichael is Artistic Director of the Belfry Theatre, where he has directed Red by John Logan (a co-production with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre), the English language premiere of And Slowly Beauty…(co-pro-duction with the National Arts Centre), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (co-production with the Arts Club Theatre/Jessie Award for Outstanding Direction), the Canadian premiere of The Year of Magical Thinking (which subsequently toured to the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto and the National Arts Centre), Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing and Ann-Marie MacDonald’s musical Anything That Moves. His west coast directing credits also include Glengarry Glen Ross starring Eric McCormack (Arts Club), I Am My Own Wife and The Music Man (Vancouver Playhouse), and Much Ado About Nothing and The Winter’s Tale (Bard on the Beach). He has directed at most of the major theatres across the country, includ-ing the Stratford Festival and Canadian Stage, and his work has been seen in every province in Canada. His productions have won awards for Outstanding Production in Toronto (A Little Night Music), Vancouver (Fiddler on the Roof and Spelling Bee) and Ottawa (Kilt). Michael is the former Artistic Director of both Theatre New Brunswick and the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario.
Nancy BryantCostume DesignNancy is pleased to be back working at the Belfry with a wonderful cos-tume team and has enjoyed taking over Studio B to expand the costume shop for this production. Last season Nancy designed the costumes for Jitters. She has designed costumes for Pacific Opera Victoria's The Flying Dutchman, Rodelinda (set as well) and The Rake's Progress and for theatres across Canada for the past 25 years. Selected theatre credits include: The Overcoat, Oliver and numerous others for the Vancouver Playhouse (sadly no longer); annual productions with the Arts Club Theatre including The Constant Wife, Sweeney Todd and She Loves Me; productions for the Shaw Festival and most recently Tear the Curtain (Electric Company/Arts Club Theatre) for Canstage in Toronto. Costume design for Dance includes work with Kidd Pivot, The Netherlands Dance Theatre, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, Stuttgart Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem and Ballet BC. She also designs costumes for film and Television in Vancouver where she lives and is the recipient of twelve Jessie Awards and a Leo Award.
John FergusonSet DesignJohn most recently designed both set and costumes for the Belfry produc-tions of God of Carnage and And Slowly Beauty… and has been resident designer for Theatre Calgary, Neptune Theatre, the National Arts Centre, and the Canadian Stage Company. He has designed for all the major regional theatres from coast to coast as well as Mirvish Productions, the Canadian Opera Company, Pacific Opera Victoria, the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival, where he has designed twenty productions. He is the recipient of two Dora Mavor Moore Awards, Montreal’s la Soirée des Masques Award, Vancouver’s Jessie Richardson Award and a Tyrone Guthrie Award. Previous Belfry designs include The Year of Magical Thinking, The Real Thing and Anything That Moves.

Alan BrodieLighting DesignAfter a long absence, Alan is thrilled to be back at the Belfry, where he has created the lighting for productions that include Stones in His Pockets, The Syringa Tree, Mary’s Wedding, When We Were Singing, The Drawer Boy, Two, Skylight, Come Rain or Come Shine, Anatol and The Collected Works of Billy the Kid. Alan has collaborated many times with Michael Shamata, includ-ing the Soulpepper production of A Christmas Carol and the Pacific Opera Victoria productions of Mary’s Wedding and La Bohème. Kim HarveyAssistant DirectorKim Harvey is Chilcotin, Okanagan, Kootenay and Carrier. She complet-ed the UBC BFA Acting program in 2008. Past theatre highlights include: Rez Sisters, Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, The Laurier Memorial, Salmon Row, the Governor General's Award winning play and National Tour of Where the Blood Mixes, and most recently, Gordon Tootoosis final show, Gordon Winter. Kim was also a co-host on the Aboriginal People’s Television Networks show, First Talk where she represented the Seventh Generation on topics within the Canadian Aboriginal social context. Kim feels extremely honored to follow the long lineage of storytellers that came before her, and privileged to continue that long practice at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria. Kim thanks the Belfry team for all their hard work, and Michael Shamata for believing in her.

bistro moderneGeordie HaleyComposerGeordie Haley is a composer, improviser, educator and guitarist. Contributing to the creative music scenes of Fredericton, Toronto, and now Halifax, Geordie has been presenting songs, rhythm based compositions and improvised music for over 25 years. Since returning to the Maritimes Geordie has been a featured artist in concert and festival programs by creative music presenters Upstream Music, Suddenly Listen, Canadian Music Center, The Motion Ensemble, Jazz East, and the Harvest Jazz Festival. As an educator Geordie continues his practice at the Nova Scotia Community College Music Arts Department, teaching private lessons and instructing ensembles. Kim Charleen SmithStage ManagerKim has been stage-managing for over 20 years and continues to be grateful for the opportunities her work brings to her life. This includes returning to the Belfry for her fifth season and a recent tour in Japan with the Canadian play 2 Pianos, 4 Hands. She is a graduate of the Technical Theatre and Design programs at both Vancouver Island University and the National Theatre School of Canada. Her professional career began at the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto with The Dream in High Park, followed immediately by the Canadian premiere production of The Phantom of the Opera for Livent Productions, also in Toronto. Kim worked at Livent on several musicals in Toronto and tours of both Canada and the US. She has stage managed at the Vancouver Playhouse, Theatre Calgary, Opera Hamilton, Pacific Opera Victoria, on motor vessel "Monarch of the Seas" and was the Resident at Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Kim has also taken her theatre training to the world of sport, working on the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, for the World Weightlifting Competition in Vancouver, and the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. She is thrilled with the lineup Mr. Shamata has assembled for this action packed season and looks forward to sharing these productions with patrons and colleagues.
Ben CheungAssistant Stage ManagerBen is a graduate of UBC’s BFA Theatre Design and Production program. He is overjoyed and thankful that the Belfry family is willing to put up with his mischievous shenanigans once again! His stage-management highlights include Love in Public (SFU), Fresco (BellaLuna), Aesop’s Fables (Carousel), The Wizard of Oz (Carousel), Munscha Mia (Carousel), Best Before (PuSh Festival), Billy Bishop Goes To War (UBC, Persephone, Belfry, Arts Club), High School Musical (Viva Musica), and Always… Patsy Cline (Viva Musica). Other theatre credits include Blackbird (Rumble), Seussical: The Musical (Carousel), Love You Forever and More Munsch (Carousel), and The Hobbit (Carousel).
