Measure and Marking Out the Flower Petals Then

Cutting Them OutWhat I Did?Today, I started my project. Mr. Anderson cut out the piece of ply wood that would be the whole flower part of my project. I started measuring and marking out the size of the mirror area and then used a compass to draw out the circle. Next I sketched the shapes of the petals on. I xthen went into the studio to start cutting the shape out with a copping saw. This took me awhile but after that, I drilled in four holes on each points of the inside of my flower head. I needed to take the middle part out because the mirror would go in there and so I would have to drill it out. With that, I had to use a jig, which I have never used before. I saw Hide use it and it was really loud and fast! So I placed the jig saw into the hole and started going in a curve. I managed to do two sides of the inside.

This is me cutting out the shape of the petals with a coping saw!!

This is what the head of the flower looks like after I cut out the shape. Notice the two

straight lines that go right across the wood?? Well, at the end of the lines, that is where I drill

in a hole and start cutting.Tools and Machines Used:Measure + Marking: pencil, eraser, try square, ruler, compass. Tools: Copping saw and the jig, which is used to cut wood from the inside.

Machines: Pedestal drill is used to drill holes into the wood.

What’s Next?I am going to continue sawing the inside of the head out. After that I will need to measure the size of the mirror, cut it out and figure out how to put it in place from behind. I will also need to file the edges of the petals too at some point.

Learner Profile and Feelings:I didn’t think I would say this but I am a risk taker for trying on a new machine I’ve never used before. I was scared half the time I was using the jig because it’s heavy, fast and the vibration really knocks your hand out!!! I was scared I would go over the line, which I did but it wasn’t too bad. It was really heavy and I thought I would lose control and the jig would go across the wood but it didn’t happen. I was SO relieved. I think I did really well on my first try.
