Police are investigating a suspicious fire at the Tahunanui back beach on Saturday night, where a scooter was set alight. Police say they’d like anyone who has any information about the fire to come forward.

Dentist leaves Nelson mum out of pocket

Earlier this year he had a government contract to treat children and adoles-cents revoked after con-cerns about the standard of care he was providing. In 2001, he was convicted of defrauding the govern-ment by $40,000, claiming for work he had not done.In 2013 he had a condition attached to his practising certificate, preventing him from doing endodontic work and requiring him to refer any patient needing it to another dentist.

The Stoke Dental Centre on Main Rd Stoke is now closed and its owner is no longer a reg-istered dentist.

Broadgreen Intermediate is one of nine schools in the Nel-son region with leaky build-ings that are being investigated by the Ministry of Education, with Henley School’s $984,000 library so badly damaged by water that it may have to be de-molished.The ministry is presently in the middle of a 10-15 year build-ing improvement programme of assessment and repairs to schools which have, or are sus-pected to have, weather-tight-ness issues. It has 1642 build-ings in the programme and so far has spent more than $260 million on assessing and re-pairing 635 leaky buildings at 328 schools country-wide.Acting head of the education infrastructure service, Jerome Sheppard, says Henley, Broad-green Intermediate, Golden Bay, Riwaka, Wakefield and Richmond schools are includ-ed in the programme, with the water damage in Henley’s library “worse than we had initially thought”. Another three Nelson-Tasman schools are also in the programme but cannot be named because their leaky buildings are “subject to

legal proceedings”.“All of these buildings have been identified as having weather-tightness issues as a result of either poor design, materials’ failure, poor work-manship or poor quality con-trol processes,” Jerome says. “We take weather-tightness damage at all these schools se-riously, which is why they are in our building improvement programme.”Broadgreen principal, Derek Lucic, says they have three buildings that are being as-sessed, but haven’t reached the next stage where the extent of the water damage is known. Derek says two of the leaks have been found at the inter-face of old and new buildings and he doesn’t think the dam-age will be too extensive, while a third area is in a “reasonably

modern building”. “The Ministry of Education has been proactive about it, which is good, but it’s a real embar-rassment to the designers and building industry. It’s going to impact on the roll out of future funding for schools.”Henley School is one of the worst affected in Nelson with up to 90 per cent of the fram-ing timber found to be dam-aged when the cladding and roof were removed. Jerome says they have “received expert advice that the library’s leaks resulted from design and con-struction issues”.“We suspended the work so we could investigate further and consider the best options.” Henley’s leaky administration block was also damaged by wa-ter but has been reopened this term after being “remediated”.

TOP STUDENTS FOUND: Nelson’s top stu-dents for 2014 were announced last week at the region’s local colleges. At Nelson College, Finn Whittington won the dux award, Adam Pauling won the dux at Nayland College and Emily Nar-bey was the dux winner at Nelson College for Girls. Senior students now start exams for the next month.

SMITHIES FIRES UP DANCE PARTY: He’s known for his funky and out-there tunes and this weekend our very own Grant Smithies is at it again, DJ-ing a dance party at Devilles on Sat-urday night. Grant is hosting “Soul Kitchen 2” after the first one was a sell-out hit at the same time last year. The party will be held at Deville’s this Saturday, November 15. Two other DJs will also play on the night, says Grant. “The idea is to play a huge range of music so you get a bunch more variety than you might ordinarily find at a dance party. It’s going to be great fun and there aren’t many tickets left. Tickets are $20 from Deville’s and the party starts at 8.30pm.

SCHOOLS SECURE FUNDING: The Canter-bury Community Trust has approved grants totalling $311,562 for the Nelson Tasman edu-cation sector. Applications ranged from com-puter technology support to pool and building enhancements, as well as several worthy pro-jects aimed at improving the lives and outcomes for non-school children and young people and those requiring special education. Thirty two schools and trusts attracted funding.

Team assembled to restore yacht

Members of the Nelson Coastguard have assembled a team to restore a yacht donated by Nelson Weekly. The yacht will be tided up and raffled off, with all of the money raised going straight to the Coastguard. The team are from left; Graeme Richards, Mark Howard, Dave Brookes and Emmett Mills. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

A team of volunteers from the Nelson Coastguard has been assembled to restore a donated yacht. The yacht is a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor, that was donated to the Coastguard by the Nelson Weekly newspaper and its sister paper, Waimea Weekly. The volunteers from the Coastguard will spend the next year tidying it up, before raffling it off. They hope to raise as much as $20,000 from the project.Graeme Richards from the Coastguard, says the donation

“blew them away” but they are now in the planning phase, figuring out what they need for the yacht.“First thing we’re doing is getting it cleaned up, inside and out. the inside of the hull is pretty dirty, its had a lot of rain water in it so it’s got tide marks inside.” The wiring will also need to be pulled out and then rewired from scratch, but the project isn’t huge, says Graeme. And with the mast and rigging expected to be up this time next month, it won’t be long before the yacht begins to look the part.

Drone cameras make their way to NelsonA drone camera takes a photo of Mark Holmes and Cathy McBride on the Cathedral steps. Insert. Mark and Cathy with the drone camera they’ve bought for their business Photo Map. Photo: Andrew Board.

They’ve made a stir overseas for all the wrong reasons, but drone cameras are being met with enthusiasm and wonder in Nelson. The cameras are operated by remote control and are facing strict legislation overseas over fears around privacy. But for Nelson business, Photomap, the camera has been a hit, with people keen to ask questions whenever it’s in the air.Photomap uses the drone to take photos of inaccessible areas to help with their business, which creates maps, mainly

for forestry businesses. But they have also taken some impres-sive photos and videos.Co-owner Mark Holmes says they aren’t sure where demand for the photos will take them, but commercial work for real estate companies is an obvious area.Mark says it’s an exciting addition to their company. “We’ve had to think if there is a market before we invest too much, but we see potential.”Co-owner Cathy McBride says indus-tries like construction and engineering

are possible areas of growth. “Guys who need visual access to difficult sites be-fore entering, or promotions work.”Other Nelsonians with drones are cap-turing some stunning images and vid-eos. New Zealand Drone Services is a Nelson-based company and was at the drag racing in Motueka on the weekend, taking photos and videos of the action. The drones can fly 400 metres from the controller and the operator can see what they’re filming via a smartphone attached to the controller.

Nayland principal farewells college

Nayland College principal Rex Smith is leaving the school at the end of this year to move to Wellington. A new principal has already been appointed. Photo: Andrew Board.

Andrew Board

After five and a half years as principal of Nayland College, Rex Smith is leaving at the end of this year to take up a job in Wellington – but he promises to be back.Rex moved to the top of the south 14 years ago when he took the job as principal of Motueka High School. He was there for eight years before moving to Nayland. He says he’s leaving the job because he wife secured a role with NZQA in Wellington and, after following him “around the country for my career,” it was time to repay the favour. Rex has since secured a job with the New Zealand Teachers Council in Wellington. But the move to the capital won’t be for long, he says, with the plan to come back to Nelson to live.“We see our move to Wellington as a short-term change, we will keep property here with the view of coming back. Where else would you want to live?”Chair of the Nayland College board of trustees, Tracey East, says the school is in good hands with a replacement already announced, Daniel Wilson, an associate principal at Manurewa

High School in Auckland. “Over the two day interview process, Daniel impressed us. He is vibrant, passionate, and enthusiastic. He will continue to drive the college forward.”Last week, Rex gave his farewell speech at the school’s senior prize-giving, described as the “toughest speech of my life”.He says working at Nayland has been an “awesome” experience and his greatest pride was watching the students perform at the highest levels, whether it was in academics or on the sports field.“Highlights are always about what happens around the kids. So for me it’s the scholarship results, students performing really well academically and on the sports field. And it’s not just the top teams but seeing other kids out there doing it.”The biggest challenges included a dip in the school’s role last year, something Rex says was a “readjustment”. “It was a challenge and I learnt a lot out of it, but that’s behind us now. We are quite steady at the moment with around 1000 students on the roll.”Rex will leave the school before Christmas.

A new pilot programme teach-ing local mums new skills and giving them some “time out” is being run in Stoke this month. The programme is a collabora-tion between Adult Learning Support, Stoke Kindergarten and Nayland College’s adult community education. It aims to give mothers some fun and educational workshops, while their children are looked after in a different part of the build-ing by teachers from Stoke Kin-dergarten.The first workshop was held last Wednesday and showed

mothers how to create games and activities for their children. The other three workshop top-ics are fashion, gardening and how to cook with home-grown vegetables and budgeting ad-vice.Sally Williams, from Adult Learning Support, says the first day was a huge success.“The idea is to support mums and carers in the community, give them some time out to think about caring for their children and themselves. The feedback we’ve had has been great, they’ve loved it, so hope-fully we can continue to run them next year as well.”

The mothers said that “meet-ing other mothers” and being able to “relax” were highlights, while another said learning how to “make games” and “use a hot gun” were “great fun”.The workshops are free and Kathryn Sclater, from Nay-land College, says working with the Kindergarten Adult Learning Support has been a big advantage. “This initiative is grassroots community col-laboration at its best, giving the gift of learning and inspi-ration to adults who have the all-important role of parenting or caregiving to children under five years.”

A trailer belonging to the Nelson Mountain Bike Club has had its tyres stolen and left on blocks, but a Nelson business has come to the rescue. When Paul Jennings, a member of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, went to pick up the club’s trailer for an upcoming race, he found the wheels were missing. He called around to see if anyone from the club had borrowed them, but soon realised they’d been stolen. The trailer was kept in a locked Nelson City Council depot located at the start of

the Codgers mountain bike trail. The lock-up was considered to be safe and the club had never encountered any trouble in the past. The Top of the South Downhill Double Header race held last week, involving 100 athletes, required a trailer to transport the bikes up the hill, and without a trailer, there would be no race. With only two days before the race, the club posted a notice on Facebook asking if anyone could loan them some trailer wheels for this event. A mountain biker saw the notice and sent a photo to Tyres & More Nelson owner

Adrian Curtis, asking if he could help out. He responded by gifting four new wheels,

tyres and locking wheel bolts to the retail value of around $1200, he also fitted the wheels to the trailer. “I used to be a mountain biker and raced a little bit over the years, and I still have an affinity with mountain biking. “We do a fair bit for the community but I can’t believe how many people from the mountain biking club have thanked me. The club has also generously given me one year’s bronze sponsorship and free entry into the Dodzy Memorial Enduro Race, which I am really looking forward to, so I’ve got three months to get fit,” says Adrian.

The V4 and Rotary South Island Championships were held over the weekend, with a day of drag racing on Saturday and a “show and shine” event at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. One of the biggest automotive and lifestyle shows of its kind in Australasia, the V4 Rotary was automotive heaven for those who went along.Devin Stokes, of Nelson, showed his Mark II Ford Escort at the event and says it was great to be able to have his car on show. He and his brother, Darryl Bunn, fully restored the car, which includes a turbo skyline motor, slowly over a two year period. The influx of car lovers to the region didn’t have much of an impact on the number of tickets issued by police either.Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says specialist road policing staff from Canterbury and Marlborough helped with a sting on vehicles travelling into the area for the weekend’s event.“I’m very pleased to be in a position to say that, on the whole, the visiting car enthusiasts and locals exercised good judgement on our roads.”He said the high visibility policing operation undoubtedly had an impact on the result.Police stopped more than 1000 vehicles over the course of the weekend and issued more than 200 infringement notices. Four vehicles were green or blue stickered and three drivers received roadside suspensions. Two vehicles were impounded and four people were detected with excess breath alcohol.“A number of drivers were given the opportunity to make their vehicles compliant on the roadside, by removing tints from windows,” Inspector Greally said.“The real success of this operation is that we get to Monday morning and there hasn’t been a serious crash or injury in our area.”

Blacksticks to play in Nelson:Awesome! Great to see our fan-tastic facility getting used for

internationals. Looking forward to it. Rachel McMurtry.

Good for the city and it should generate some much needed re-

tail spending. Brenda Kenny.

Giving sugary drinks to kids neglect?Agree. Funny thing, water out of the tap is free. Dave Trigg.

I've seen photos on Facebook of children as young as 3 drinking

out of a large can of V. That's neglect. Who in their right mind would give an energy drink to their child..... Babies getting fizzy in their bottles is definitely neglect. Katrina Topp.

Giving it out at a kids birthday party as a treat is not neglect,

but letting kids drink it every day and thinking its ok, is neglect. Tina Duncan.

I disagree, everything in pro-portion. My son drinks juice

and it has sugar, but he refuses water, so I'm supposed to let him get dehydration instead of giving him a drink of juice? A whole can of fizz or energy drinks should be a no, but classed as neglect is taking it too far. Aleisha Brunell.

In the past 6 months my daugh-ter and I have witnessed moth-

ers giving their very young children coke on 3 separate occasions. Mind-blown!! Sheree Piesse.

Monkey see, monkey do! I al-ways have bottles and bottles of

cold water in the fridge, and it's a run-ning joke when my kids drink "my" wa-ter, they drink so much water, like me! Not neglect when it's once every now and then. Amiee Baker.

I agree. Back when I was bring-ing up my daughter we didn't

think or realise the damage soft drinks did and consequently my daughter has a mouth full of fillings. My grandies on the other hand have none as my daughter took care not to give them soft drinks. Brenda Kenny.

On a regular basis, definitely ne-glect. One small glass at a birth-

day party is fine in my opinion. Some juices have more sugar than lemonade, so why it's seen as a "healthy option" is completely beyond me. Nikole Berkett.

Neglect is taking it a bit far, as to say they don't care or love their

child[ren]. I would put it down to just poor parenting choices. Helayna Brennan.

Everything in moderation. I am all for sugar-saturated drinks

as a treat, but am totally opposed in an everyday environment. Education, as opposed to nanny state compulsion, is a better direction. Peter Snushall.

It is not neglect! Everything in moderation. So I can go to an

event and buy alcohol - which is a drug - but not buy an L&P ! Makes no sense to me. Alethea Stove.

I agree, if it's given to them on a regular basis. Xmas and birth-

day parties is understandable, but if your child can come home from school and have a glass of coke or Fanta then there's something wrong there. Kids should be having water or milk. I don't think neglect is the right word to use, though. But, unfortunately, you do see kids going to school with fizzy, and well, that's a cock-up in the parenting department. Khalarn Olivia Cooper.

I agree. Water is better, AND it's free! My girls will only be hav-

ing that 3L Just Juice for their birthdays as a treat. I'm hosting Christmas this year, and I will not be supplying fizzy drinks. Jannelle Patterson.

The creators of a Nelson-based sit-com are just $7500 away from kick starting a “TV and film industry” in the top of the south.B-Rabbit is based on the story of Laura Irish, who immigrated to Nelson from the United States. The show is based on her journey to Nelson and the unexpect-ed arrival of her “very, very eccentric” brother, and her attempts to integrate him into her new life.Laura – who is the co-writer and producer as well as lead actor in the show – says they are hop-ing to raise $20,000 from fundraising website, Kick-starter, by this Sunday. So far they have had more than $12,000 do-nated and, if they can reach their goal, filming for the pilot will start just two days later. “We need to reach the $20,000 to be able to do it. We’re looking for the commu-nity to get behind us. If we create this pilot and it gets picked up, then we will have the money to make the rest of the episodes.”Co-producer, Steve Wilson, says if the series gets the go-ahead it will create an entire industry for the region. “There have been no

shows filmed in Nelson, other than Highway Cops, and there’s more to Nelson than drunk drivers – a lot more.”Once the pilot is filmed it will be pitched to various television sta-tions, and that would mean a big spin off for Nelson, says Laura.

“Nelson is a beautiful place but it has its own quirks as well, so we’re hoping that Nelson can be its own character in the show.”The idea for the show be-gan after Laura started tell-ing stories of her brother to her new friends in Nel-son. People would roar with laughter and encour-

age her to tell more. Then, when her friend from the United States who knew her brother, moved to town, they got talking about how great a show based on her brother would be. She says her brother has done many crazy things, includ-ing organising his own wedding – without a bride. “He booked the church, booked the band, but had no girl. These things just keep hap-pening. It’s constant; he lives in this alternate universe.”To donate, visit www.kickstarter.com and search “B-Rabbit”.

Hundreds turned up for the St Joseph’s School Gala on Sun-day, taking advantage of the perfect weather and family entertain-ment. The children of St Jo-seph’s entertained the crowd throughout the day with singing, dancing, kapa haka groups and ballet. The

chocolate wheel, silent auction and white el-ephant stall proved as popular as ever, and there was plenty of food stalls and home baking on offer.A highlight for the younger ones was the fairy grotto, complete with fairies Sam and Louisa reading stories and face painting.

TUESDAY 11 November 2014NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly

Meat lovers around Nelson will be licking their lips in anticipation, with news the Mad Butcher is very soon to be opening its doors. On Friday November 14, Nelson franchise owners Dan and Nikki Perrin will be welcoming the public to their new store, on Songer St in Stoke, to celebrate the grand opening. There’s no doubt the Mad Butcher is a firm favourite with kiwi’s, and has been provid-ing quality meat products at great prices since 1971.

With 39 stores around the country already, Dan and Nikki’s shop brings the total to 40, which is not only exciting for them, but for the whole of the franchise. "It's a fantastic opportunity for the people of Nelson to get top quality meat at very competitive prices. The reality is that Mad Butcher shops really do bring the prices of meat down, for example, when the store opened in Christchurch, meat prices there dropped overnight, it is very exciting times for Nelson," says Sir Peter Leitch.

The Mad Butcher has been a reputable source of meat for that summer barbeque, succulent roast and many other delicious meals, and Dan and Nikki are committed to carrying on the good name here in Nel-son. It was a huge factor in deciding to be part of the Mad Butcher in the first place, alongside the influence of the man himself, Sit Peter Leitch. “The Mad Butcher has been in the game since 1971 and that story alone is pretty impressive; and we are very excited to work for an iconic kiwi brand

that is now the Mad Butcher, so that was a big part of it. I also think that speciality food stores like fruit and vegetables and bakeries are starting to go back out on their own, the market is swinging back again

because people are realising there are more options now,” says Dan. The new store has taken over what was previously the Stoke Rugby Clubrooms, but has undergone a massive transfor-mation, from benches and rugby jerseys to lamb legs and sausages. Dan himself completed a butchery apprenticeship af-ter leaving school and then worked at the Riccarton Mad Butcher for six months when it opened. His move to Nelson was prompted by developments in his sport-ing career and he has been a Nelson local for the last 13 years, while continuing to play rugby throughout the country. His repertoire of supporting achievements includes 38 games for the Tasman Makos and around the same for Bay of Plenty, 14 games for the Crusaders and half a dozen

for the Chiefs. Sport continues to remain at the forefront of Dan’s in-terests, as well as his enthusiasm to be part of such a well-loved and re-spected business.

Finding a premises suitable for ac-commodating them wasn’t the easi-est task in the process of setting up the store, and it took around 12 months of searching to find and

secure the clubrooms in Stoke. “We just thought there was an op-portunity in the market in Nelson; another option for people who were after quality meat. The Mad Butch-

er franchise has been enthusias-tic about coming to Nelson for a while, they just haven’t had some-one on the ground in Nelson dedi-cated to finding a site,” says Dan. The Mad Butcher Nelson will be stocking everything and anything your barbeque can handle. From grocery lines to the finest cuts, you name it they’ll have it, and if they don’t stock it in store, they will do their very best to get it for you. “We’ve got butchers on site from 7am until 7pm, seven days a week,

so if there’s something in the shop that needs to be trimmed or customers want bigger steaks, they can talk to one of us and we’ll be happy to accommodate people’s needs,” says Dan. Another bonus with the Mad Butcher Nelson is they are one of few in the franchise who will be producing their own fresh pork and beef sausag-es on site. Additional flavours are planned for the future once they settle into the business, as well as sausage meat and even salami. The Mad Butcher franchise is very conscious of the welfare of animals and wants only the best conditions for them, which is why their carcass meat is 100 per cent grown in New Zealand and New Zealand Quality Mark certified; ensuring it complies with the specific requirements of New Zealand. It’s a very exciting time for the locally-owned and

operated store, and everyone is invited to come and check out the new shop on Friday. With 12 other staff on hand to meet the needs of their cus-tomers, Dan and Nikki are looking to hire more to help over the flat out Christmas period. The grand opening will take place this Friday from 7am, and is the perfect opportunity to get in and explore what the newest Mad Butcher has to offer. Sir Peter Leitch will be there to celebrate the oc-casion from 10am - 2pm, along with a number of local sporting celebrities from the Makos, league and basketball, who will be helping him man the barbeque. For Nelson couple Deb and Mike Pioch, their love and dedication to-wards animals has led to many Tas-man District Council pound dogs finding loving new homes. When the couple moved to Nelson from Australia a couple of years ago, one of the first places Deb visited was the Motueka SPCA. She walked dogs voluntarily at the RSPCA in Canberra before mov-ing and enquired about doing the same here. She discovered they did not have a dog shelter, and that impounded dogs from around the Tasman region were held at the Tasman District Council pound in Richmond. Deb and her husband Mike, who both work part-time, have volun-teered numerous hours over the past year, walking and training the dogs from the pound and helping to find them new homes. Not only do they walk the dogs twice a week, they also teach them basic com-mands. “We enjoy walking the dogs, getting out in the fresh air and exercising, it is a place you can go and always be welcomed,” says Deb.Some of the dogs that arrive at the pound can be scared of their new environment and it often takes Deb and Mike quite a few visits to build a trusting relationship. Others are very happy to be in a safe dog pound and excited to explore new experiences.“These dogs often have more per-sonality because they have had to look after themselves. They haven’t been handled much, walking them seems to settle them down and we see a big change in behaviour, they then learn to sit, stay and walk on leads. It is really rewarding seeing dogs that wouldn’t even come out of their kennel now in good homes,” says Mike. They spend their days off socialis-ing the dogs as much as possible, and when ready Deb videos the dogs on the walks and posts on You

Tube, in the hope of finding them a new family.“We teach the dogs some social skills and find out what they are like, and advertise them to be re-homed on Trade Me and You Tube. We show the dogs walking and run-ning around on the videos, this lets possible owners see the dogs in ac-tion,” says Deb.In addition to walking the dogs, the couple take the dogs in their own vehicle to the Vet Centre Richmond to be de-sexed, vaccinated and mi-crochipped, and take them into their own home to care for them as they recover. All costs associ-ated with this are covered by private funding arranged by Deb and Mike. When possible, the dogs are put into foster homes by Second Chance, a non-profit organisation which re-homes unwanted or neglected dogs, to learn real home-based social skills and obedience before being placed into a permanent home. The Nelson ARK also takes the pound dogs into their APART pro-gramme, which matches wayward youth with the dogs. The students learn to train and manage the dogs and the dogs acquire obedience. Control Services Ltd Animal Con-trol Officer, John Bergman, says, “Mike and Deb do a wonderful job, and due to their dedication the dogs in the pound have a better quality of life and a trained puppy has more of a chance of finding a new home”.For further information, visit Deb and Mike’s website www.tasman-richmonddogpound.co.nz or watch Deb’s videos on You Tube “Tasman Richmond Pound Dogs” and “Second Chance Tasman Dog Rescue”. If you would like to provide a foster home for any dogs, please contact Second Chance on www.facebook.com/sec-ondchancetasman or the Nelson ARK on www.thenelsonark.co.nz.

Head of the region's airport, Kaye McNabb, has announced her retirement from the job, ending 11 years in charge.Kaye grew up on a dairy farm in Hokitika on the West Coast, and after leaving school de-cided to study nursing. Mar-riage and family ensued and she then found herself as a solo mum with three children, in-cluding one who had serious health problems, and facing redundancy in her role at the hospital. Desperate for work, she applied for a job as a wages clerk at the Westland Hospitals Group where she was promot-ed to management level. In early 1989, she moved to Nelson and was employed by Port Nelson Ltd in various sen-ior roles, and was appointed to the position of chief executive of Nelson Airport in 2003. “It was a very gutsy decision of the board who appointed me to the position, particularly since I had no aviation experience and didn’t wear trousers. I hope over the years I have justified that decision,” says Kaye.

Kaye recognises that it was a challenge, not only for her but for a lot of the people she dealt with within the very male dominated industry. She over-came this by quickly learning the ins and outs of the aviation scene and its politics, as well as ensuring she was available to listen to issues and opportu-nities from the aviators them-selves.“I realised pretty quickly that this was the biggest domestic airport, and really the only one of the regions with the resourc-es to take the lead on political issues,” says Kaye. The biggest challenge to the airport itself was that it was almost solely dependent on landing charges. A key focus was getting fairer return on the other aspects of the airport, by developing the property and parking to help smooth out the income streams.Kaye, who was presented with

the Fulton Hogan Airport Personality of the Year award at the New Zealand Airports conference in Auckland last week, has enjoyed her role with the airport company. She says it has been the most exciting and varied job that she could imagine anyone having. A re-cent highlight was the Nelson Airport 75 year anniversary celebration, a free event for the whole community. “You deal with everything from plane crashes to being escort for a group of Iwi and Doc removing a dead dolphin from the fore-shore, to scooping exhausted Godwits off the grass runway or meeting and escorting roy-alty,” says Kaye. However, Kaye says it is the nice everyday people that she will remember the most.Kaye plans to retire on Decem-ber 19 and will stay in Nelson, where most of her family now reside. She is looking forward to Christmas with her family, and spending more time in her garden and with her 11 grand-children.

Schools, community projects, organic and biodynamic projects, eco housing – the range of what they finance is wide, but every single borrower has the same fundamental purpose: to do something extra for peo-ple and planet. They actively use money to do good. “100% of our borrowers are people and organisations working on socially, environmentally, and culturally positive projects in New Zealand.” says Phil McKinstry, CEO of Prometheus. “We are also transparent and share our borrowers' stories, so our savers can see how their money is used and the peo-ple and communities it is impacting.” Phil will hold a talk as part of the Ecofest titled “Investing in a better (and eco) world,” from 3:10pm at the Jaycee workspace. You can also learn more about Prometheus at their Ecofest stall at the Energy Centre space.

The Billings Ovulation Method® is used by millions of women around the world. It is validated by eminent inter-national scientists and successfully trialled by the World Health Organisation. Recent trials have shown greater than 99% reliability. By learning to identify natural signals of fer-tility, a woman can use The Billings Method™ to achieve or avoid pregnancy, and safeguard reproductive health. It is

easy to learn and can be used through all stages of a wom-an’s fertile lifetime (including breastfeeding and in peri-menopause). This method is used to monitor fertility, help-ing many sub-fertile couples achieve pregnancy, including those who had been trying to conceive for more than two years, or who had failed IVF attempts. The Billings Method is Environmentally Sound, having no negative environ-mental impact, unlike artificial methods which produce waste in both production and packaging. Appointments are held at St Luke’s Health centre. Home visits and online appointments are offered.

There are just over 100 foster parents in the Nelson-Tasman Foster Parents As-sociation, helping care for the region’s most vulnerable, and last week they helped celebrate Foster Parent Aware-ness Week. The association is funded by Fostering Kids NZ, a New Zealand charity, and exists to support the families who open their homes and hearts to the children in their care, by providing encourage-ment, support and education to foster parents. Fostering Kids NZ say over 10,000 children and young people in New Zealand are unable to live with their biological parents, because they have been subjected to, or are at risk of, abuse or neglect.Local foster parent Rachel, has been a short-term and transitional caregiver for two years. During that time she has cared for eight babies. She decided to become a foster parent after having worked with babies privately over the past 25 years.“It is great being able to give a little one the much-needed love and care that they need for that period of time. It is very rewarding to play that part in their life and prepare them for the next part

of their life. I also keep memories of the time that they were with us so they can look back on photos and information about their time in care, it is really im-portant to have those as they get older and realise who they are and where they have come from. The greatest gift we can give as foster parents is uncondi-tional love,” says Rachel.

Fostering Kids Regional Coordinator and foster parent, Catriona Ward, says one of the challenges in the past has been that you worked in isolation. “This has changed now due to the new co-ordinator position being based in Nel-son, we have now closed the isolation through increased support”.The Nelson-Tasman Foster Parents As-sociation holds bi-monthly meetings and everyone is given the opportunity to attend. The Appreciating Foster Par-ents supper event was also held last week in Nelson, with 38 local foster families attending.Children in foster care can be challeng-ing and being a foster parent can be tough. As well as dealing with the emo-tional side, one of the hardest aspects for foster parents is dealing with legal issues and financial pressures, so the association give advice on Child Youth and Family and legal matters. Child Youth and Family will be running Ways To Care training sessions, targeted to-wards potential foster parents, 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday, November 12, 19 and December 3, at Child Youth and Family Nelson office, Level 2, Monro Building, 186 Bridge St, Nelson.

WHITE RIBBON RIDE: The White Ribbon motorcyclists will ride into town next Tuesday in an effort to spread the word against violence against women. The White Ribbon movement started after 14 women were killed in Canada for studying engineering, a man’s career, according to the killer. The women’s classmates founded the White Ribbon movement the following year and it came to New Zealand in 2004. The riders will met Nelson mayor Rachel Reese at Zumo at 8am on Tuesday, November 18. The first 100 men to sign the pledge to never do violence against women will get a free pie and coffee.

ST JOHNS HONOURS LOCALS: Two St John members from Takaka and Nelson have been honoured for their work with the community organisation in this year’s St John Honours list. Stuart Chalmers of Takaka has been promoted to be an Officer of the Order of St John, while Kris Gagliardi of Nelson has been admitted as a Member of the Order of St John.

POPPY WORKING BEE: A poppy working bee will be taking place on Sunday, November 23, from 2pm, at the Suburban Club. People are welcome to take part in the activity, to create 5000 poppies for next year’s ANZAC day and the commemoration of 100 years. Participant’s poppies will be going towards displays in the Nelson Museum and Cathedral.

It was a chilly Sunday afternoon in Septem-ber last year when then-Tasman mayoral candidate Kit Maling stood at the front of a packed Blue Herring Lounge, deep in Waimea Village. He wore a tweed coat and shuffled from foot to foot as hundreds of stressed and concerned faces, invari-ably topped with grey hair, squeezed past each other and on to chairs that had been set out, ready for a big turnout. Battle-hardened by a dozen previous meetings, the residents had hoped for good news but they didn’t expect it.They sat there after a three year fight with the owners of Waimea Village, Michael and Carolyn Wright, over the massive in-creases to the monthly levy they paid. They were at the end of their collective wits. It had been emotional and had taken a huge toll on many of them.Kit stood there, after months of work by community leaders and businesses to sup-port the residents, and offered a way out. He would buy the village and turn it over to the residents, with each able to buy a share, equal to the number of homes in the village. It was a day of hope. Two months later when it was officially in their hands, it was a day of celebration. One year on, the at-mosphere of stress and strain has gone. Now it’s a sense of pride in their village and the neighbourly vibe has returned. The village has got its mojo back.Already, money has been paid off the

modest mortgage, two roads have been re-paved, the back fence that was falling over has been strengthened, the light posts have been de-rusted and re-concreted and a new security system has been installed. Two more roads are planned to be resur-faced by April next year.Kit, who is now the part-time manager of the village, says it just goes to show how the past owners “screwed them over” with the incredibly-high monthly levy pay-ments they imposed on the residents. Now the village is managed by a board of directors, two of whom are residents, the

others are business leaders. Kit contracts to the company and works 20 hours a week to maintain the village and keep it running smooth. He says the community feel is im-possible to escape. “If I’m digging a hole somewhere I’ll have four or five guys there watching me dig and offering their opin-ions, and there’s a competition to see who can make me the best scones. They have a real sense of pride in the village now.”Residents will also help garden the com-mon areas and keep an eye on each other, says Kit.And it is reflecting in the house prices.

Recently a home in the village sold for $280,000, a record high price for a home there and Kit says demand is high because the future is bright.Co-chair of the residents committee, Jerry Rowland, agrees. He says it’s a completely different atmosphere from a year ago. “I don’t want to talk about the past because what we have now is so great. We all work well together and the village is a great place to be. It’s back to being a friendly, happy place that cares for the people living here.”The village’s Blue Herring Lounge – previ-ously the scene of heated meetings with the past owners – is now a buzzing hive of activity. There are pool nights, fashion shows, performances and its annual garage sale that was held on Saturday.Kit says the biggest problem the residents have now is if someone is driving too fast. “It’s all pretty minor stuff now and that’s good. They don’t have to worry about their future, their levy has stayed the same and we’ve been able to do a lot of good things to improve the village.Of the 172 homes in the village 140 are shareholders, and Kit says there is one share attached to each home so there will never be an opportunity for one person to be in control again. Jerry says it’s been a peaceful year. “We’re all so happy. Kit is doing an amazing job and the residents are right behind him and the directors. We can see the improve-ments in the village and it makes us proud. “Waimea Village is back to being the best place in the world to live.”

TAHUNANUI AMALGAMATIONThe Tahuna Town Board sought amalgamation with Nelson City in 1924: it received a cold response. Tahunanui was regarded as a “Cin-derella” with nothing but debt to contribute to such a partnership.

The Nelson City Council demanded the 600 Tahunanui residents meet full city rates, plus funding all the costs of introducing gas and wa-ter supplies, a drainage system and improved streets, costs way beyond their purse.

The image is thought to be of Arthur John Bevan. The name on the wrapper is ‘Beven, Mr’. A search of the Auckland War Memo-rial Museum Ceno-taph database found no records for the name ‘Beven’. A sec-ond search under the name ‘Bevan’ found only one man named ‘Bevan’ (Arthur John Bevan) who was a member of the Can-terbury Mounted Ri-fles and connected to the Nelson region. The man can be identified as part of the Canter-bury Mounted Rifles due to his ‘ NZMR’ and Nelson Mounted Rifles badge.Bevan was born on 26 May, 1892, in Welling-ton. On the Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Charles Bevan (father), West-port, New Zealand. Before World War

One, Bevan worked as a baker for H.T. Har-ris in Nelson. Bevan enlisted from Nelson and his enlistment ad-dress was C/o H.T. Harris, Waimea Street, Nelson, New Zealand. He joined the Canter-bury Mounted Rifles

and embarked from Wellington for Egypt on 16 October, 1914. Bevan was discharged as being unfit for ac-tive service on 12 July, 1915. He survived the war and died on 12 November, 1989, in Waipukurau.

High-flying Falcons remain unbeatenThey simply can't be stopped. The Nelson Marlborough Fal-cons have scored their fifth win of the season, beating Wander-ers Youth 2-0 at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. Once again the Falcons kept a clean sheet while scoring two at the other end.A first half strike by Atkin Kaua gave the hosts the lead, but it was Nat Payne's goal in the sec-ond that secured the win for the Falcons. The win means the Falcons are at the top of the ASB Youth League table, after five games,

Well, judging from the huge line-up of boat trailers down Akersten Street last Saturday, the word is out!Lots of snapper getting caught on long-line and rods over the last two weeks. These pre-spawning snap-per in Tasman Bay are feeding up prior to forming into spawning schools.Once again the long-line, acting as the insurance for those who don't get them on the rod and reel, known as the "silent assassin", lying the baits along the bot-tom in wait for the opportunistic snap-per to spot a trail of tasty little baits to chew on.Some very good snapper are getting caught in all depths of water from the cut right over to Abel Tasman side. Many of these fish are in prime condition, around 15-20 lb, with one as big as the magic 30 lbs being caught on Saturday. When we were out we noticed lots of bait school sign in mid to top-wa-ter and witnessed a few bird work-ups with the gannets dive-bombing hard out. This is a great sign of the different types of bait that will start off what looks to be another bump-er season for our local fishery. A couple of the Kahawai and a piece of "seaweed fish" my mate caught had lots of small shrimps in them and this along with krill, whitebait, anchovies and pilchard bait schools is what combines into lots of min-erals in the water column to aid another successful season for the survival of the newborn juvenile snapper. On the Scallop front it sounds like extra tows are being required in Okiwi to try and get close to quota and size, unless of course you’re a

diver and can sift around the edges to gather keepers where the dredges can’t get to. I haven't heard too much from down the Sounds areas yet but I am sure that with the weather and wa-ter temperatures creeping higher it won’t be long until the jungle drum sends out the message to visit those magical areas that we have close by for us all to enjoy. The surf-casting fraternity will be

starting to get their gear ready as the snapper come in closer to land-based casting range. Nelson is bless-ed with many beach and coastal locations to give this ground-roots style of fishing a go. Places such as the Tahuna blind channel, Rabbit island beach, and Kina being some easily accessible spots to set up for a relaxing surf-cast session. So Nelson folk, get yourselves sort-ed and out there to make the most of the early bite. Remember to be courteous at the boat ramps, watch those forecasts and try to avoid those predominant afternoon sea-breezes that can give some smaller boats difficulty on the return trip to harbour. The next Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Social afternoon is on Sat-urday, December 7, at 3 pm at the Tasman Cruising Club.Tight lines and keep safe out on the water to all.

Garin College student Thomas Heaton and Marlborough Col-lege for Girls' Sally McMath won their long course races on a chilly opening night of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series.Thomas recorded eight min-utes eight seconds for the 800 metre course, that started with a long leg into a strong incom-ing tide and finished with a fast downstream sprint to the Nelson Yacht Club. Luke Kelly was second in 8min 13sec, with Hayden Squance third in 8min 54sec. Sally finished in 9min 3 sec, just ahead of Caitlin Delany (9min 27sec) and Pip Dwyer (9min 49sec). Ben Price and Bryony Marriott were first ashore in the short race over 300m.One hundred and fifty-six swimmers competed in the opening race of the series that continues every Thursday over the summer starting at 6pm.There will be an added incen-

tive for swimmers to compete in this summer's series, after Wildside Travel donated a trip for one lucky swimmer and their partner to Samoa for the Samoa ocean race series in August. All travel, accom-modation and entry costs are included in the spot prize, that will be drawn at the end of the

sea swim series. After each swim this summer, a competitor from the long race will be drawn at random and be eligible for the big prize. At the end of summer, these swimmers will go into the draw to win the big prize - swimmers must have competed in a mini-mum of 12 swims to be eligible.

The epic Silver Fern Rally made its way through Mur-chison over the weekend.Best of the locals is Garry Adcock and his co-driver Mark Dalton, after the first day of racing they were coming second in the Challenge section of the event. There are three sections to the event– the Historic Trophy for 2-wheel-drive cars, the New Zealand Sil-ver Fern Challenge which caters for more modern 2-wheel-drive cars, and the Silver Frond which takes place over the last three days of the event only. The rally will cover 1150 kilometres of competitive special stages over eight days before it finishes in Queenstown next Saturday after travelling through Marlborough, Nelson, West Coast, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland.
