President’s Message… Susan Weinstein

As most of you know, this has been a very difficult few years for me. But the world goes on as always, and time pushes forward. Please bear with me over the next few months as I try to get into the swing of leading an organization I care so deeply about. As a dear friend says, we all have our baggage to schlepp! We are at a pivotal moment in our Synagogue’s history, following the August vote to affiliate with the Conservative movement. Right now, we are a dying congregation. Without making some important changes, we stood the chance of having to close our doors sometime in the not too distant future. With this new affiliation, we have an opportunity to revitalize our Jewish community, fill a niche for Judaism in Arkansas, and hopefully attract a vibrant new rabbi and new members. This all will take time, compromise, and hard work. We are indebted to the dedicated men that are currently leading services and all of our members. As Albert Einstein is credited with saying “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results”. We may have to try different things to see what works best for our congregation; if something works we will keep it, if it doesn’t, we’ll try something else. I am committed to several important things during my presidency. We have already begun the process of joining the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Once we are officially accepted for membership, our Rabbi search committee can begin in earnest. Our immediate past president, Dave Greenbaum, named a search committee chaired by Michael Kuperman and including Victor Biton, Dan Girone, Valerie Steinberg, Lirit Franks and myself. We have already surveyed what our members would like in a rabbi and the committee will move forward with the next steps as soon as possible. It is a process, and will take time, but in the end, we hope to hire a vibrant rabbi that we can respect and enjoy. Finally, we need to look closely at our Constitution to see if any changes need to be made and we need to establish bylaws. If anyone is aware of existing bylaws for our Synagogue, please let me know ASAP! I am open to hearing your opinions and concerns. Please don’t hesitate to contact me so we can work together through any problems. Sisterhood President… Karen Mackey

Sisterhood has a couple of events planned for the upcoming months that should be fun and also help others. Come on out Sunday, November 18 for lunch and card making. My sister Gayle will be in town and bringing some of her scrapbooking and card making materials and layouts. Also, please bring some non-perishable food items to donate to the Arkansas Food Bank to distribute. They are always in need of things like peanut butter, canned meat, cereal and canned goods. Also, in December, Sisterhood will co-sponsor the Hanukkah Latke party. Hope to see everyone there! Wishing you and your family a Happy and Meaningful Thanksgiving, Karen Mackey

Shabbat Mornings at Agudath Achim

Prayer - Torah Reading - Healing Blessing – Light Kiddush Lunch 9:00 - 11:30AM

Please join us each Shabbat morning for traditional services and torah service. All are wel-come as we utilize the Holy Sabbath to nourish our spirits, our minds and our bellies.

Prayers for the Sick: Shabbat is healthy for us as individuals and a great way to spend time in community. In addition we take time to say a prayer for any person in need of healing. Sponsor Kiddush: It is a lovely way to honor family events – Birthdays, Anniversaries, Yahrzeits, achievements, etc…., or just to participate and treat our community and our friends.

All Welcome: Whether your background is extensive or limited, whether you prefer English or Hebrew, whether you are male or female, there are ways for all to participate.

How we can enhance our Shabbat Morning experience and how you would like to be included.
