Rabbi Janine Jankovitz
Dear Congregants,
Last month I joined a national call with other Reconstructionist rabbis to discuss High Holiday services in
light of the uptick of Covid19 cases due to the Delta variant. Several rabbis explained that their services
would only meet virtually. Others were considering hybrid services while others were only allowing
vaccinated persons inside their building. The one thing that was clear from everyone on the call was that
congregations were once again facing a difficult decision.
I am aware that our situation could change once again by the time Rosh Hashanah arrives. But as of right
now, our Executive Committee has decided to offer hybrid services. We will have services indoors with the
option for congregants to stream virtually from their home. We will require anyone who is in our building to
wear a mask, whether vaccinated or not.
I’m not sure how else to describe the current state we are in except to say what a bummer.
All we can do now is trust that we are doing everything we can to strengthen our spiritual community while
also keeping people safe. This doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a huge disappointment for all of us,
especially for me as your rabbi.
And yet, even with this disappointment there will still be celebration and community. There will be prayer
and song. There will be greetings of “Shana Tova!” There will be many moments of sweetness that will carry
us through into the New Year.
A few years ago I wrote A Prayer for the Journey from a Place of Disappointment, now published on
RitualWell, a website through Reconstructing Judaism which allows users to find, create, and share Jewish
rituals. The following is an edited version of that prayer for 5782. Please join me in bringing some sweetness
into our year by blessing our community and ourselves:
Hashem,
Help me to be open to this new journey.
Fear walks besides me, but I know You, Hashem. Help me to draw on Your holiness; help me remember the
strength that is already inside of me. Help me to continue cultivating it. I place my hope with You. I know
good will come.
May it be Your will, Hashem, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide
our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace.
And let us say, Amen.
L’Shana Tova Tikatevu. May you and yours have a sweet and healthy New Year.

Dear Fellow Congregants,
It has been a remarkable summer so far. How exciting it was to see everyone at Devotion by the Ocean, and
sit down and enjoy dinner with them. The naming of Evelyn Pastor in our sanctuary and the well planned
and delicious luncheon was a feast for both the heart and the stomach.
Under normal circumstances, I would be telling you about all of the exciting preparations that CBENT has in
store for the High Holidays. But these are not normal times. Just when we thought we were returning to a
semblance of the prior norm, we are back to alert status for the COVID delta variant. With this in mind, as
some of you may already be aware, the Exec Board is planning on a hybrid service, with both an in-person
presence and a streaming component. The feeling is that we are using due caution, in our efforts to provide
both a meaningful experience and a safe one.
Both Rabbi and Cantor were so pleased and excited to be back on the pulpit in person and to be able to
interact with members face to face, it is difficult to take steps back. But it is the wise thing to do, and many
synagogues are making similar plans. Let us all include in our New Year’s prayers that this is just a transient
inconvenience.
While starting my preparations for a High Holiday address, I began to read Rabbi Sidney Schwarz’s book,
“Jewish Megatrends,” not my usual beach reading. What I have begun to understand is that our approach to
Synagogue strategic planning needs to be broadened. What worked in the past is not as relevant at present
and even less so in the future. The “baby boomer” synagogue will not appeal to the Gen Xer and even less
so to the Millennial. We need to recreate ourselves and our Shul into a marketable and appealing
organization that may not be all based on bricks and mortar. Our Rabbi, trained in the Reconstructionist
model, understands this and is well suited for where we need to travel, and Cantor’s Adult Ed classes and
flexibility complement this. Your leaders need your guidance and willingness to think outside the box. To
be successful in the future, will not just be about collecting dues, and service participation. It will be about
volunteerism, creativity and finding the correct shoes to fit the feet.
Please let the office know ASAP if you plan on attending High Holiday services in person. Please consider
participating in our Slichot services, and more importantly, communicate with your clergy and lay leadership
what it is that you need from CBENT, and the direction you would like to see it go.
On behalf of myself, my wife Bonnie and my children, I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.
L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevo!

High Holidays come unusually early this year, which makes for a very hectic September. Even though our
Religious school sessions usually start after the Labor Day, we scheduled a Welcome Back to School Day at
the end of August. Our clergy, faculty, and staff greeted our students, taught about the holidays and wished
them Shanah Tovah. Special thanks to the CBENT Brotherhood for delicious food!
Or Tamid is up and running. In addition to main services there will be Junior congregations, led by
Morah Amy for grades Gimel through Zain, and Morah Ruth for Hebrew High at CBENT, and Morah
Miriam at Or Shalom. CBENT youngest members will have their own Tot services, with fabulous leaders:
Andi Joseph for the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Ellen Glassman for Yom Kippur. I will have a chance
to be with our little daveners on the second day of Rosh Hashanah.
On Sundays we will be meeting in person at Or Shalom for the first semester. Unfortunately, we
have to require that everyone wears a mask and keeps social distance according to the CDC guidelines, but
safety comes first. I hope that the weather would permit us to have snacks outside on the individual beach
towels, so we could safely socialize as a school, but when it is raining or gets colder classes will have to
have their snack separately. The setback in the COVID situation comes as a huge disappointment, but we
are determined to have a great year filled with education, yiddishkeit, and fun, no matter what!
There is a change to our services attendance requirements that we are introducing this year. We are
upgrading a former “Lucky Seven” to “Make a Minyan”. Each time our students come to services they are
to request a sticker (with the date and a Torah portion name on it) from the Rabbi or the Junior
Congregation leader and to put it on their personal card. Those who attend ten or more services will be
rewarded at the end of the year and the student, who attends most services will receive a special prize! But
much greater than any material rewards is the sense of belonging to the community, fluency in Hebrew and
liturgy and overall comfort with the services and a synagogue setting that comes as a result of coming to
services regularly! I hope every Or Tamid student makes a minyan by the end of the school year!
There are more new programs and initiatives at our religious school that I will report about as the
year unfolds. Now I just want to wish everyone Shanah Tovah Um’tukah from my family and myself!
Have a sweet happy and healthy 5782 and may all our worries and tzores remain in the past!

Sisterhood performed a mitzvah and helped prepare the sanctuary for the High Holidays by polishing the silver in all three of the arks at CBENT. Taking on the challenge was Ruth and Shana Henninger, Joyce Brody, Beth Burak (who came with super polishing cloths), Marlene Ozer, Laura Schreiber, Roz Jaffe and Marilyn Bamash. Rabbi Jankovitz helped us with placement of the items in the shul. It was indeed our pleasure to beautify the Sanctuary.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 and it’s Delta variant raised its ugly head. Out of an abundance of caution, we have CANCELLED our traditional Whine and Cheese. Where the virus is spreading at lighting speed, we felt it was unsafe for all of us, vaccinated or not, to be without our masks while eating, drinking and talking. We’ll be in touch to resume on Zoom. Knitting will also be held on Zoom. More information will follow. Everyone is still welcome to join us. I am extremely committed to Holocaust education. In 1995, I was selected by the American Federation of Teachers and the Jewish Labor Committee to go to Poland and Israel to learn first hand about the Holocaust. Last April, Temple Sholom of Broomall invited me to give a presentation on my experiences visiting the Death Camps of Poland. The Sisterhood of T.S. was finally able to give me full video of the program. If anyone would like to view it please email me at [email protected] and I’ll be glad to forward it to you. Be Well, Stay Safe and have a very Blessed New Year! Yours in Sisterhood, Marilyn
Dr. Marc Belitsky
Shanah Tova! As we begin another year, Men's Club is poised to be here for our congregants. We are hoping to have more in person events this year if the environment is safe. We are kicking off the year supporting our religious school by sponsoring the back-to-school barbecue on Sunday August 29th. This yearly tradition is always a good time bringing families together and celebrating before the high holidays.
Our Men's club softball team finished the regular season 8-1 and in first place. We beat Main Line Reform in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, in a close game we lost to Temple Beth Hillel Beth El in the semifinals. Overall, it was a great season. During the season we were blessed with a wedding (Glassman-Johnston), and 2 babies (Cetlin and Dziados). Following our final game, we well attended family barbeque. The team is looking forward to next year.
Sunday, September 19th come out and help build our congregational Sukkah. It is a mitzvah and only takes about 45 min. Start time 10:30 am.
Chanukkah is early this year. Please look for the Channukah raffle that will be sent to you in the mail. We need your participation and support. Thank you in advance.
Our next Men’s club meeting will be on Zoom Monday September 13th 7:30 pm.
