CANDY EXCHANGE
Article Written by Kennedy Roehl and Nikki Hardrath
On the days after Halloween, the Family and Community Service
class went the elementary school cafeteria to buy back Halloween
candy. In exchange for candy, students received healthy snacks and
a toothbrush. The 100 pounds of candy that was collected will be
sent to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude. Our class
would like to thank the W Dental Group that volunteered to pay for
the postage to send the candy to Operation Gratitude. The students
hope for a safe return for our troops and wish them luck on their
mission.
Lackland ISD E-News College Week Page 6 of 11 www.lacklandisd.net Nov. 09, 2012
Last week Stacey High School celebrated college week. Students learned the importance of
furthering their education….the more you learn, the more you earn. Students participated in trivia
questions, made pennants for their locker, and wore their favorite college shirts. On Thursday
Generation Texas visited with the student body. GenTX helps students with the steps needed to
take on the path to college and career education, from taking the right classes and tests, to
applying to colleges, and then finding the money to pay for school. You can visit their website at
www.gentx.org. Stacey always continues to talk to students about the importance of education,
even when it is not college week. This week Dr. Hengst from UTSA visited with juniors and
seniors. She explained the differences between college and high school and what students need to
be thinking about to have a successful future. Parents and students are always welcome to visit
the College and Career readiness center in the Stacey Counseling area. The center has a lot of
great information about college and career options. Scholarship opportunities can be found in the
readiness center (outside the counselors office) and in high school hallway. If you have any other
questons please contact Mrs. Rue or Ms. Nicholson, the Stacey Jr/Sr High counselors.

LEARNING ABOUT NUTRITION Article by Annorra Casias
The Stacey Family and Community Services class has started their project funded by
the 3e’s grant that Lackland ISD received. The high school students are responsible
for teaching the elementary about the importance of nutrition. There first project
was to organize and set up a booth at the Fall Carnival. The students made yummy
vampire bites created out of apples and peanut butter. Students passed out the
vampire bites for free to hungry customers. Students handed out flyers about the
importance of eating healthy and explained the Candy Buy Back program. Their
second project was to create videos with nutrition tips. Every week the elementary
students will watch Friday’s Food Fact. The videos discuss a wide range of topics,
such as the importance of eating vegetables, why you should drink water, healthy food
options, and much more.
