Mayor Julian Castro Visits Lackland ISD
The Mayor of San Antonio took time out of his busy schedule to speak with 6th, 7th,and 8th grade students about the importance of getting a college education. Mayor Castro encouraged students to follow their dreams and begin working now to make those dreams a reality. Students were extremely attentive to what the Mayor had to say and asked him several questions concerning his job as the Mayor of the seventh largest city in the U.S.. We appreciate
the mayor taking the time to speak with our students. Julián Castro was elected Mayor of San Antonio on May 9, 2009. A
35-year-old San Antonio native, Mayor Castro is the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city.
In 2001, at the age of 26, Castro became the youngest elected city councilman at the time in San Antonio history. Throughout his
tenure in public service, Mayor Castro has championed a vision of economic growth and a top-notch quality of life for all San
Antonians.
In 2005, Castro founded The Law Offices of Julián Castro, PLLC, a civil litigation practice. He has served on the board of Family
Services Association, the Clear Channel San Antonio Advisory Board and the San Antonio National Bank Advisory Board. In addition to his community service, Mayor Castro has taught courses at The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, and St.
Mary's University.
Mayor Castro earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with honors and distinction in 1996 and a juris
doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2000. He is married to Erica Lira Castro, an elementary school teacher, and they are the proud
parents of a baby girl, Carina, born in March 2009.

ATTENTION SENIORS! Seniors spent an afternoon at the San Antonio Café College during college week. This is a
good source for college information presentations (see brochure). At www.cafecollege.org you will
see the workshops offered, dates for each workshop, and registration. Their hours are Tuesday to
Friday 8 A.M to 8 P.M. and Saturday 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. They offer a FREE ACT/SAT preparation class.
You need to register early for this class as space is limited, and it will fill up quickly. The address is
131 El Paso St., San Antonio. The phone number is 210-207-4528.
SENIOR INFORMATION: Senior parents and students need to go to www.fafsa.ed.gov before
January to get their PIN numbers. Make sure you go to this website since because it is FREE. You
cannot apply for the FAFSA until January 1, 2012. Students MUST have applied to a college before
the college will look at the student’s FAFSA for awarding money. FYI: UTSA may award all of their
FAFSA money by February. REMEMBER THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE MONEY. Each school is
different, but there has been a drop in scholarships/money being offered in today’s economy. It is
better to be proactive than to know your student is eligible for money but ALL of a college’s money
has already been awarded

Camaro, aka “K-Frog” (for Kermit the Frog). Mrs. Eva Berg and her daughter went out to Retama Park on November 13 to cheer
her on. Go Ms. Silvin Go!
Ms. Kay's 2nd grade class is doing experiments with magnets to
see which objects are attracted and which objects are not.
For their class science fair project, students are also investigating
which carbonated beverage will be more effective in cleaning a
penny....come visit the science fair to see their results!

STACEY PROFILE: Janie Pickett
By: Vanessa Marino, Stacey Senior
1. How long have you been working at Stacey? I began working at Lackland ISD in August of 2009. I still feel like a newbie!
2. What made you choose to work at Stacey? We have family in the area, and Lackland had an outstanding reputation as a district
3. What's your favorite book? My favorite book changes about every month as I read something new. Right now my favorites are The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to our brains by Nicholas Carr and Maggie Stiefvater’s trilogy that begins with Shiver.
4. How do you try to make reading fun for all ages? For me, reading is as necessary as breathing or moving through the day. So I love to share with students and peers about the great things we’re reading, or about books that our library has available. There’s nothing better than a conversation about good books.
5. What's your favorite movie? I love action adventure movies and chick flics. But the one I keep going back to watch over and over is Hunt for Red October. Right now I want to go see Real Steel.
6. Are there any new interesting attractions coming to the library this year? The great thing about the library is that we ALWAYS have new books available. There are more than I have time to share, so I’m excited when folks come in and find new stuff, or if they recommend a title – and then get to check it out when we have it!
7. What made you choose to become a librarian? I love to learn, and the library is the perfect marriage of learning, books, and technology. Interestingly, no librarian I know set out to become a librarian; we all sort of ran across this career after doing something else. IT IS A WONDERFUL JOB!
8. What's one thing you wish the library had that it doesn't currently? A JAVA CAFÉ!
9. If you could meet any author dead or alive, who would it be? I actually got to meet one of my favorites last Saturday: Jeff Abbott. He writes suspense mystery thrillers, and his most recent book, Adrenaline, is a great read. Jeff is a funny, intelligent guy who travels around the world researching bars for his books. That is quite a story!
10. Where did you work before coming to Stacey? It would be easier to tell you where I didn’t work! My family seems to move every three to four years. But we moved to Texas from Macon, Georgia, home of the Cherry Blossom festival.

This past Saturday the Lackland Chess club competed in a tournament at the Guadalupe Community Center. It was a fun and very challenging day for the team. The middle school
division included 6th grader Josh Beck who took home a 3rd place trophy, Matthew Sundquist 4th place ribbon, 7th grader Mason Luna 4th place ribbon, 6th grader Seth McGraw
5th place ribbon, Caitlin Forsgren 5th place ribbon. They were a half a point away from a second place team trophy. The elementary division was comprised of Jacob McGraw who took a 4th place ribbon and Corbin Forsgren 6th place ribbon. In the tough primary division
2nd grader Patrick Gale did his best in his first tournament. Way to go team!

Mrs. Carrion's Class is College Bound
Well, there have been some small shifts in the leader board the last 2 weeks, but
Joshua has a firm hold on the number one spot! Due to the Thanksgiving holiday,
students had to pick their starting lineups for both weeks 11 and 12 this week.
This type of early prediction could affect the results in 2 weeks, but we'll have to
wait and see! Game on!

Glass Recycling Facts
Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. All of these jars are recyclable!
The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours or a compact fluorescent bulb for 20 hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.
A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose -- and even longer if it's in the landfill.
Mining and transporting raw materials for glass produces about 385 pounds of waste for every ton of glass that is made. If recycled glass is substituted for half of the raw materials, the waste is cut by more than 80%.
Recycling: Did You Know?...
Every year we dispose of 24 million tons of leaves and grass clippings, which could be composted
to conserve landfill space.
Single-use bags are a waste of trees (paper) or fossil fuels (plastic). They contribute to water
pollution during production and landfill overload at disposal. Re-usable cloth or paper bags reduce
these problems.
Recycling is a continuous loop that works only if the collected materials are turned into products,
bought and used again. Buying products made from recycled materials supports the markets for
these products and keeps the cycle going.
Around 200 B.C. the Chinese used old fishing nets to make the world’s very first piece of
recycled paper.
Gary Dean Anderson designed the recycling symbol in 1970.
The first municipal dump was established in 400 B.C. in ancient Athens.
Keep up the good work, Lackland ISD!!! Your recycling efforts will help keep our Earth green
and healthy!!!
