Some stories live on in the soil, long after the game has finished…

The Ashes is award-winning, local writer Michael Pinchbeck’s enthralling new play about cricketing hero Harold Larwood, plucked from a Nottinghamshire coal mine to become the spearhead of England’s now infamous ‘bodyline’ attack. Bowling fast at the batsman’s body, Larwood tore the Australian team apart in the winter of 1932/3. Amid accusations of ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’, diplomatic relations between the two countries plummeted.

A dramatic story told in five Test Matches, of two countries, two classes and two men (working-class Larwood and his upper-class skipper Douglas Jardine), this new production, directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Giles Croft, explores the issues and passions that exploded during this most intense of sporting controversies.

Local crime boss Arturo Ui has the town in his hands. With a winning smile, a machine gun and an army of hoods, he sets out to take over the cauliflower trade in depression-hit Chicago – he offers ‘protection’, but it comes at a very high price. Mining a rich vein of satire and black comedy, Bertolt Brecht’s no-holds-barred allegory of the rise of Nazism, written in 1941, is a chilling reminder that greed and complacency are all it takes for evil to thrive.

Following on the from the success of Mother Courage and The Caucasian Chalk Circle, this powerful play is directed by Walter Meierjohann, Associate Director of the Young Vic.

What makes us happy? Innovative Australian choreographer Shaun Parker explores this question in Happy as Larry, a funny, playful and poignant new dance show that investigates the elusive nature of human happiness. The cast of characters features a range of psychological personality types – Perfectionist, Optimist, Tragic Romantic, Devil’s Advocate, amongst others – providing rich inspiration for Parker’s insightful creativity.

This powerful performance combines an intoxicating mix of ballet, break-dance, roller-skating and highly physical contemporary dance, all set to a vibrant electro/acoustic score from Nick Wales and Bree van Reyk.

Ground-breaking British choreographer, Darshan Singh Bhuller presents Caravaggio: Exile and Death, a dance theatre inspired by the life and work of the 17th-century Italian painter. Scarred by imprisonment and the Catholic Church’s dismissal of his works, Caravaggio lived a painful and dramatic life. Combining highly physical choreography with stunning projections and a beautiful soundtrack, Darshan tells the tempestuous story of Caravaggio’s life and art, taking the audience on a journey of the artist’s search for redemption after a life obsessed with youth and sexuality, violence, solitude and love.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar that progresses through an amazing variety of foods towards its eventual metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.Children will delight in the antics of Little Cloud. High up in the sky, Little Cloud slips away from the rest and transforms itself into various shapes of the things it sees – a sheep, an airplane, a shark and more. In The Mixed-Up Chameleon, a little chameleon is bored with its life – sitting about predictably changing colour all day. So it decides to embark on an adventurous trip to the zoo, wishing it could be more like the other animals.

This year we honour people who have made a historical mark, as well as those who are making history today. We want to celebrate them using performance poetry. This open spoken-word event is your opportunity to write and perform a short poem in honour of people who, for you, hold a special place in Black history. Eldemina is very happy – until Madeline, her new baby sister, is born. When Eldemina hears that Madeline will be a dancer too, she throws her glass slippers into the lake so no one else can ever wear them.
