THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

God is With Us

The book of Wisdom tells us that the spirit of God is in all things. What a wonderful thought, and what a wonderful image to keep in front of us as we travel down life's road. For if the path is revealed in the treading, it's good to know that God is with us, and all around us, every step of the way.

But Paul knows that this divine presence is not timid. Instead, God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the Thessalonians, might be made

worthy of that call. And who knows more about God's call than Zacchaeus, the tax collector? Jesus called him out of a tree, for goodness' sake.

Or perhaps more correctly, as we reflect upon the end of today's Gospel reading, for heaven's sake.

RCIA Have you been worshiping with us,

but never taken the step to become Catholic? Are you seeking a deeper personal relationship with Jesus but

have never been Baptized or received First Eucharist? Are you married to a Catholic and attend Mass but just don't know

what the next step is to become Catholic?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) begins next Sunday, November 6, here in our parish. This program is for anyone, 16 or over, who has not received one, two, or all of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist (Communion), or Confirmation. To find out more, come to an Inquiry & Welcoming Gathering, today, Sunday, Oct. 30, following the 10:30am Mass. Stop by anytime between 11:30am and 1pm.

MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOP AT NOTRE DAME Help – Support – Advice – Guidance - Assistance

This workshop is being hosted by our Parish Nurse Ministry, next Saturday, November 5, from 9-11am (Registration and Continental Breakfast at 8:30am), downstairs in our Parish Hall. We welcome anyone who has any concerns regarding mental health for

yourself or a family member. Our goal is to help recognize symptoms of mental illness in children and adults, identify strategies to deal with the diseases and offer resources to assist in the management of mental illnesses, including substance abuse. Presenters include representatives from the Mental Health Association of Morris County, National Alliance on Mental Illness, as well as Family Support and Recovery for Alcohol and Substance Misuse. RSVP requested but not necessary to plan for food and supplies. Please email [email protected].

JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL CELEBRATION

Next Sunday, November 6, our 12:15pm Mass will be celebrated as a Benedictine Mass of Thanksgiving.

This is an opportunity to show our appreciation for the monks of St. Mary’s Abbey, who lovingly shepherded our parish family for almost 90 years, ending with the three-term pastorate of Father Jude. Through nine decades, the monks of St. Mary’s instilled in our culture the Benedictine charisms of the love of beautiful liturgy and the

importance of authentic hospitality in being Christ to others. These values are both appreciated and embraced by our new diocesan clergy, Frs. Paddy and Mariusz.

The Mass of thanksgiving will be concelebrated by Bishop Arthur Serratelli and Abbot Richard Cronin. We look forward to joining the monks at Eucharist and to expressing in person our gratitude for the wonderful legacy they have left the parish family of Notre Dame. All are encouraged and welcome to attend! There will be refreshments following in the gathering space.

PARISH APPRECIATION BREAKFAST For All NDMC Parishioners & Friends!

Join us on Saturday, November 12, anytime from 9-11am in our Parish Hall. This is our way of thanking you, our parish family, for all that you do for us and your spiritual home. The staff of Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel, along with our Social Events Ministry, will prepare, cook and serve you a pancake breakfast.

We look forward to seeing you there! Bring a friend!

LOOKING BACK: WOMEN’S CORNERSTONE XVII

For 24 hours last weekend, 32 Women's Cornerstone candidates said “yes” to deepening their relationship with Christ. The combined power of prayer, the sacraments, hearing personal testimony, small group faith-sharing, and communal worship served to strengthen not only the candidates' personal faith, but

their commitment to responding to our Lord's call to discipleship. A dedicated and loving Cornerstone team, who have spent months planning the retreat, felt a sense of deep gratitude and joy as these budding disciples fully engaged in the beautiful Closing Mass on Saturday night. We pray their journey toward discipleship continues to strengthen and grow!

To view pictures captured during the weekend, please visit our website and/or our Facebook page!

An Evening of Exploring the Meaning and Power of Discipleship:

“THE SEVEN HABITS OF A CHRISTIAN DISCIPLE”

Here at Notre Dame, we’re hearing more and more about “discipleship.” Whether you’re a parish minister or simply a curious believer, join us for this interesting and persuasive presentation on discipleship – how to become a disciple and what it can mean to your own faith journey and to that of our parish family. For example… Is

service the same as discipleship? Not necessarily. Come and find out why: this Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30pm in the Church. This special workshop will be led by Brother Jude Lasota of the Boston-based community, the Brotherhood of Hope. His life's work is evangelization and his presentation style is very engaging. Br. Jude suggests tools for cultivating discipleship that are both effective and practical. We hope you can be with us for this evening of community and enlightenment!

FAITH FORMATION: FAMILY FAITH SESSIONS

Our Family Faith sessions were created to give us the opportunity to partner with parents and help families grow in faith together by encouraging them to deepen their love of Jesus and make Him the center of their lives. Kids learn best by watching their parents practice their faith. Parish gatherings/events and liturgical celebrations are always an opportunity for everyone to encounter Jesus Christ anew! Whether we gather to listen to someone's faith journey such as Christopher Duffley's or gather to celebrate the Liturgy/Sacraments, we are offered an encounter with Jesus Himself! As we are sharing with the kids/teens in our sessions, Jesus is truly here, in each parish gathering/event/celebration, FOR us: Free - come free from distractions and wor ldly concerns Open - come with an open hear t and mind Ready - come ready to receive His blessings and graces.

This year we invite all families to attend one of the many Christ-encountering, faith-enriching events already built into our parish calendar. Please visit our website (Faith Formation/PreK through Confirmation) to view all of the events offered and the details for each event. Please also take note of the age appropriateness of each event. Registrations will still be required for the purpose of providing additional information to each family before each event and will officially open November 1st via separate email.

For the latest view of our parish calendar, please visit us at www.ndcarmel.com COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS

SHEPHERD'S CALL SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

Our Shepherd’s Call ministry has been serving our parish for over a year now! Our Faith Leaders and assisting teens do a wonderful job of caring for and nurturing little ones while their parents attend 9am or 10:30am Masses on Sundays. With the hope of assisting more families on their spiritual journey and desire to participate in Sunday liturgy regularly, the ministry is now serving families with little ones 12 months to 4 years old. To find out more visit our webpage at www.ndcarmel.com (click on Faith Formation/Earlier Years).

A E B S E THE YEAR OF MATTHEW

As Advent approaches we look to the beginning of a new liturgical year, leaving behind the Book of Luke and turning to the Book of Matthew as our Gospel guide. Join us, Tuesday, November 15 at 7:30pm in Rm. 201, to learn more about this treasure in our scriptural tradition: Who is the author of Matthew? (three choices!) Who was its “target audience” when it was written? What are its key themes and theology? What only-in-Matthew stories of Jesus' birth, Passion, and

resurrection are in store for us this year? We will leave with a deeper insight into the Gospel that will in-form the preaching, teaching, and worship throughout the year ahead. To ensure we have enough participant materials, please register on our website at www.ndcarmel.com by Monday, November 14!
