Greetings and God’s blessings be yours on the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Today’s readings have a connection to the notion of "God’s law." Now this might get a rather frosty reception as well as the word "commandment" from many contemporary Catholics. We tend to identify more with the "God of Love" rather than the "Rule Maker on High." And as for "obedience" we are far removed from the days of "pray, pay and obey." We are more from the questioning generation and we like to begin with "Why." We want reasons. So let’s try to connect the dots of these readings and see what we can understand. Perhaps a good pace to start is the second reading from 1 Corinthians where Paul talks of "God’s wisdom." This wisdom is mysterious and hidden, yet it lasts way beyond any of the ages. And we learned of his wisdom because, "....this, God has revealed to us through the Spirit." For us to learn of and understand God’s wisdom we must turn to the Holy Spirit for guidance and discernment. We cannot grasp it on our own. To try is futile and will only leave us short and disappointed. The Psalm continues a theme from the "Beatitudes" where one is called "Blessed (or Happy) who follow the law of the Lord." Again I believe that if we are to buy into the meaning of these words then one must really practice the first beatitude of being "poor in spirit" where one knows his or her place before God and relies on God for everything; not as a sign of weakness but rather out of faith and trust. Then we may realize what Sirach means when he says in the first reading, "Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and all-seeing." Today’s gospel from Matthew has Jesus is on a real roll with his pronouncements on the commandments and the Jewish laws. He goes after killing and anger; adultery and lust; marriage and divorce; lying and swearing. It is a regular "duck and cover" session. Basically, Jesus is trying to show that God’s laws are built on a sane approach to living that will lead one to happiness and fulfillment. He is not trying to make life harder than it already is. His extension of the law in the Sermon on the Mount is an attempt to show that the road to killing starts with anger; the entrance ramp to adultery is lust, and so forth. Properly understood, law deserves support. If sin is not one’s destination, then don't travel its roadways. Yes, the society proposed by the Old Testament laws and customs is hard for us to imagine and we should not see laws as some kind of barb wire designed to snare our

freedom. Rather, laws can really be seen as ways to secure our liberty. Yet many of us don't even read the operating instructions on something we buy. We just plug it in, hit the on button and hope for the best. We tend to resist first and reconsider later-maybe. Jesus is trying to tell us and not too subtly, that we can't live like this. It only leads to trouble, and even mortal peril. If we truly believe that God is the source of life, we should become very aquatinted with the divine operating instructions. That’s the best way to appreciate his gift. Choices are not neutral. God does not compel us one way or the other. And remember, Jesus is saying that the key to keeping the commandments is the state of our inner selves. When it come to God the important direction is inside-out, not outside-in. Know that God’s wisdom, while mysterious, is revealed to those who truly love him. As St. Paul says, "If you love God, you will follow the ways of God from the bottom of your heart." Congratulations to all our married couples taking part at this Sunday’s special "I Do" remembrance ceremony at the 12 Noon Mass. Your living witness to the sacramental grace of marriage is a wonderful example to all of us. And may you be blest with many more happy years together as husbands and wives. Thanks to Faith and Friendship for hosting this Mass and the reception that follows in the school cafeteria. Please remember to take home a copy of the bulletin when you leave Mass today. It contains many items of interest and invitation, with something for everyone. Of special note is news and needs from Parish Social Ministry, info about Religious Education, the Principals Corner from St. Raymond’s School, an order form for the new round of "Parish Picks," the upcoming "Pot of Gold 50/50" chances, next Sunday’s Family Mass at 9 am and much more. To keep informed, keep a copy of the bulletin at home for quick and easy reference. Have a great week and a Happy Valentine’s Day (I like chocolate too!). Smile, share, follow the rules and remember: the best vitamin for making friends is B1. God bless always. Father Chuck

Many girls/women have bought into the pro-abortion rhetoric—’it’s a blob of tissue.” “a product of conception” only to discover, too late, that “it” was a baby, that “it” was a she or a he and that “it” was their baby. Few women/girls have been warned that their “choice” carries

lasting psychological, spiritual and many times physical consequences. Anne Marie, a post-abortive woman shared, “Abortion changes you forever. I thought the abortion would free me from a responsibility I felt I was not ready for. Instead it held me in bondage to feelings of regret, remorse, depression and despair. My soul became a slave to self-hatred and worthlessness. My sanity was the price I would pay. Women deserve better than aborition.” (Endangered, Our Future in Peril, “ Human Life Alliance)

MASS INTENTIONS 2012

Mass Book Opening

As most people know, Mass Intentions are generally offered for those public or announced Masses that are celebrated weekly in a parish. At St. Raymond’s we have 17 such Masses each week, which is a generous amount to have available for individual intentions. There is the requirement that one Mass be celebrated weekly for the intention called "The People of the Parish." So that leaves us with 16 weekly Masses for other intentions. Understandably, there is a sentiment that exists with many people to have Mass Intentions on a regular basis for their beloved dead. What frequently occurs, though, is that there are just not enough Masses available for all the people who would like a specific date and time. Sometimes there must be guidelines for fairness and to allow for recent deaths to also be remembered in a timely fashion. Therefore, I would ask that there not be a request for the same intention more than one Mass per month. Also, no intentions may be booked in advance of the Mass Book being opened, nor by phone. Any requests for intentions that come in the mail must also include the offering. All Mass Intention Offerings are $15.00. I feel that this policy is more than fair and allows for everyone to have a chance to make requests each year. There is also another possibility that is just as valid and can be done at any time for as many Mass Intentions as desired. That is what we commonly refer to as the "Unannounced Masses." These intentions are for Masses celebrated in various ways. Priests sometimes celebrate a private Mass, or use these intentions for Masses that have none; like at a nursing home, when on vacation or for a special occasion like "Concelebrating." And they are also appreciated by many visiting priests to take home for Masses where they do not have a lot of regular intentions. Finally, they are used by retired priests who have no regular intentions and are most grateful for these ones. I hope that everyone can understand these points and be cooperative while yet having their needs satisfied. Please note that the Mass Book that begins January 2012 will be open at the Altar Server Sacristy beginning on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 9:30am. Thanks for your time and attention to this topic.

Eucharistic Minister Classes

Have you ever thought about becoming a Eucharistic Minister but you hesitate to become one? Several parish members have expressed the desire to take the classes, so why don’t you join them? We’ve received word from the Diocese that the Spring classes will be held on

April 9th and May 21st at Kellenberg High School. You must attend both sessions. Please contact either Carol O’Reilly at [email protected] or Barbara Gribbon at [email protected] and we will give you all the instructions.

MISSION NEWS From our Sister Parish in Guatemala …

This past weekend an Orientation Meeting was held for the 21 people who will be going on our MISSION AWARENESS TRIP this June/July. One of the things they were asked to do was to write a paragraph explaining why they want to go. Their reasons are as varied as their number.

In future weeks we will be printing them in this bulletin so that St. Raymond Parish can have an idea of who will be going to represent the parish in Guatemala. Look for their thoughts as the weeks go by. Before you know it - it will be June and we will be on our way to the airport!

Family Mass Sunday, Feb. 20th 9:00 am

The next Family Mass will be at 9:00am on March 20th, 9:00am

We look forward to

seeing your family at this special Mass!

Parish Social Ministry

Can an old dog learn new tricks? They sure can, and do! Age has very little to do with stubbornly resisting new experiences. The exuberance and overconfidence of youth can also cause the disregard of lessons needed to be learned. Becoming a senior of any species does not preclude loss of intelligence or zest for the new experiences in life. Just this year I finally acquired my own lap top, and although I am on a need to know basis, I am discovering how wonderful and mind

opening this electronic communication can be. Even though I resisted for such a long time because of so many interests that occupied much of my time, I found that even limited exposure to a computer is a great time saver, especially for writing this column. It is virtually having the whole world at the end of my fingertips. Used properly, this gift can and does bring our world to new heights. Global events which affect all of us can no longer be easily hidden, even when a government would deny its citizens means of communication. Awareness of the world at large is a by-product of electronic global communication. God created His church to be universal. We might tend to minimize the great and glorious world He gave us and attempt bring it down to our size, because it is difficult for us to imagine God's grand scheme. Many of us are overwhelmed and stunted by our lack of ability to comprehend all that is God, so we accept only what our minds are able to perceive and thereby limit Him to our own comfort level. Unlike other things in our lives, God cannot be kept on a "need to know" basis. If we are to attain salvation, we NEED TO KNOW GOD. We have to realize that the scope of God is not limited by parish, neighborhood or any boundaries. The world is His church, all of mankind His children and therefore our brothers and sisters. We all know this, but sometimes we get territorial believing that "Charity begins at home." Indeed it does, but the key word is begins. It doesn't stop there. If we are to follow Jesus, we begin our journey at home and then follow Him to the ends of His universal world, encountering all our neighbors and sharing God's love and gifts along the way. The best thing about this journey is that we can accomplish this trip by the way we conduct our lives, formulate our attitudes, share our gifts and spread that love which God lavishes upon us without even having to set one foot outside our area. God sees to it that our smallest generosities have a domino effect, that our loving actions are contagious and that our open, giving hearts are filled with joy. Humility, openness to change and eagerness to enjoy the fullness of life are wonderful tools for learning “new tricks” for all ages.

Pantry Needs: All items except canned green beans are desperately needed. Please be as generous as you possibly can so that our empty shelves can be stocked.

Stewardship Thought for the Week

Stewardship involves more than just the gift we bring to the altar. Today’s readings say clearly that it is fidelity to God’s law that makes our offering acceptable

Sacrificial Giving : Last Week $15,423 Last Year $17,344

Monthly Sharing with the Catholic Counsel in Santa Lucia, Guatemala,

The Heart of the Parish

$ Snail Mail Savings $

I just wanted to write an explanation in the bulletin of some changes in our mailing practices that are being made to cut down the unnecessary volume and cost we incur in some of our mailings. First of all we are now mailing the contribution envelope packets on a bimonthly basis rather than monthly. Secondly we are starting to eliminate the mailing of these packets to approximately 1,725 registered families who made no contributions at all in 2010. This means that there is no record of any contribution made to St. Raymond’s through the regular envelopes that were mailed to them every month for the entire year of 2010. Please note that the entire parish mailing list will always receive the Christmas, Easter and Stewardship mailings.

And Thirdly we will not be mailing a 2010 contribution statement to everyone as has been done in the past. Most contributions can be reconciled by possession of canceled check statements. We will certainly provide a statement to anyone who requests it. Simply call the rectory and make such a request. The savings on

these changes will be in time, labor, printing and mailing costs. The projected savings will be in excess of $12,000 a year. I think you can see how these changes should provide us with a good savings over the course of a year. I thank you for your cooperation with these changes and especially for your continued support of St. Raymond’s Parish. — Father Chuck

Religious Education

A big “Thank you” to all the parish children and their families who took part in their grade level 9:00am Mass last Sunday. It is so gratifying to see our parish families coming together to worship at Sunday Mass, and we welcome and appreciate their continued involvement in their children’s faith journey. This past week has been a busy one for most of our students. On Monday and Tuesday evening, our 7th graders worked on putting together hundreds of “goodie” bags, with toiletries, snacks and other necessities, to be distributed by Sr. Mary Lanning, to the poor and homeless in New York City, on or about St. Valentine’s day. We sincerely thank our young people, and their parents for their conscious concern for the suffering and needs of others, and taking positive actions to help in any way. We have been rehearsing all week with our fourth graders, in preparation for their Living Rosary, which will take place on Thursday, Feb. 17th at 7:00pm in the church. All are welcome to attend this very reverent service honoring our Blessed Mother, Mary. We invite all interested parishioners to join us in petition and prayer.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ONE AND ALL! Remember to love one another as God loves us!

Faith Formation

Principal’s Corner

Well here we are already in the middle of February! How quickly the time does go. So it’s time for all of us to celebrate Valentine’s Day and “the 100th day of school”. Our “100th day” has been moved a couple of times because of the unplanned SNOW DAYS, but we’re ready now to commemorate the big day on Tuesday, February 15th. It may not mean

very much to adults in the area, but it’s a great treat for the Kindergarteners who have all kinds of special activities for the day. (Also means that they’re that much closer to moving on to first grade!) We have certainly begun our registration process at St. Raymond’s. Let me simply remind everyone that St. Raymond School is holding OPEN REGISTRATION for all of our classes during the months of February and March. Because St. Raymond’s is a parish school, priority in admissions is given to baptized members of the Roman Catholic Church living within the parish first, and to children in surrounding areas second. Enrollment is open to children of all faiths as resources permit with priority given to Catholic students. Children entering kindergarten MUST be five years of age on or before December 1, 2011. Likewise, first year students must be six years of age on or before December 1, 2011. An original birth certificate, Baptismal certificate and verification of immunizations must be presented at the time of registration, along with a $100 non-refundable fee. Please note that there is a possibility of some financial assistance through the diocesan TOMORROW’S HOPE FOUNDATION. The “Student Aid Form” (application) is available in the school office as well as on line at www.psas.org . There is a nominal application fee. Last week I mentioned that I would like to highlight some of the integral parts of our school family. Let me begin with the St. Raymond School Board, a group of dedicated parents who work with the Pastor and Principal in an advisory capacity. We are very fortunate at St. Raymond’s that these volunteers care so deeply for the school and all that it entails. They are forever investigating ways that will make the school better and affordable for our families. They lead the way for others through their participation and involvement in all aspects of school life. The ten board members are appointed to three-year terms by the Administration in consultation with the Board. This group has worked very hard to economically maintain the building, develop practical ways to fundraise, and to assure the health and welfare of the children. We are indeed blessed to have them work so diligently for our school family. With sincere gratitude I acknowledge the 2010-2011 School Board: Michael DiCarlo (President), Melissa Abuin (VP), Dina Awad (Secretary), Christin Aitchison, Chad Aragona, Louis Cafiero, Mary Shaw, Anthony Capellupo, Donna Einemann, and Richard Madden.

Sodality of Our Lady

“Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us”

Hello Everyone!

Do you remember when our first round of Parish Picks began? It was back in February, 2006. Doesn’t that seem like such a long time ago? We’re now beginning our 5th year with the next round that starts in February, 2011.

Our parish has benefited from this program to the tune of $80,000, and the same amount has also been won by the winning participants in this venture. So you can see – we’ve made a lot of people very happy! We do appreciate your participation in our Parish Picks venture in this very trying eco-nomic time.

Don’t forget – a ticket for a loved one would make a great Birthday or Thank You gift, and how about any family events that might be coming up? It’s the perfect gift for someone you just don’t know what to get.

The cost of the ticket is still $60 and you’re eligible to participate in all the monthly drawings be-cause even if you win, your ticket automatically goes back in for the remaining drawings. The draw-ings are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, beginning in February, 2011 until August. Entry money ($60) for the next six months will be due by Saturday, February 12, 2011.

Please have your application in before the next segment begins. We do not discount tickets if you are late. Ticket numbers are not reserved – they will be given in the order in which your payment is received. We’d love to be calling YOU on the 3rd Sunday of the month saying “Congratulations! – You’ve won!”

It’s up to you to make it happen.

Please complete and return the application below, along with your check, so you can be IN IT TO WIN IT!!
