T oday we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter. In the Gospel we receive the great command from the Lord just as the disciples did; Love one another. Such as my love has been for you, so must your love be for each other. This is how all will know you for
my disciples: your love for one another. How we act in the world will tell the world that Jesus is alive and well. These messages call each of us to make the world better by our words and actions. Let’s make this a week where they know we are Christians, in our home, workplaces, schools and communities. This past Tuesday our eighth graders in the religious education program at St. Kieran and St. Agnes school and religious education students celebrated Confirmation with Bishop Wypych. Though the bishop was delayed a bit, he was worth the wait. Bishop Wypych sounded like Jesus in the Gospel today when he told those receiving confirmation that their actions are what is important. Possessions and looks take a back seat to how we live out the faith in the world. As always the liturgy was done well and the combined choirs of St. Agnes and St. Kieran were the icing on the cake. Congratulations to all of those who were confirmed. Also remember that Confirmation is a step in a journey of faith that never ends. Again thanks to Teri Klopp, Mr. Lungaro, Aline Keith, and the teachers and catechists for their work. Today at our 10:00 AM Mass our second graders will be celebrating their First Communion. This is always an exciting celebration filled with joy. The children have prepared for the occasion and can’t wait
to finally be able to receive the Lord in the Eucharist. to finally be able to receive the Lord in the Eucharist. Their enthusiasm is contagious! We all are reminded of the great gift we receive each and every time we receive communion. As I always tell the children, “we receive the Body of Christ and become the Body of Christ.” Congratulations to the students, their parents, and their families on this joyful day. Once again thanks to their catechists for working so hard with them this past year. The Teach Who Christ Is campaign continues to move forward. As of this writing we are now at $160,900 in gifts and pledges. This is great progress. This past week many of you have received mailings inviting you to a combined meeting at St. Kieran so I can go over the progress of the campaign, discuss how the money will be spent in the parish and then invite you to join us by making a pledge. The campaign en-tails a five-year pledge payment which makes it easier to participate. We need everyone’s help so that we can make our goal of $525,000, but more importantly that we can complete the needed projects here at St. Kieran. Please join us on this Thursday at 7:00 PM in the church at St. Kieran. Finally, general registration for the new school year at St. Agnes School is now open, so don’t miss out. The school has been blessed with a number of sources of scholarships which help make the program more affordable. There are also scholarships that can follow the students into Marian or other Catholic High Schools as long as the student remains active in the parish. If you are interested in information or having a tour of St. Agnes, please call Karen Hamilton the school secretary at 756-2333. Call the school office for more information.

Dear Friends, Today, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, twelve of our children will receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time. Their names are listed on the front of today’s bulletin. Thank you to all those who will make today’s liturgy memorable for these children and their families. Sacramental liturgies are truly a team effort, and could not happen without the hard work of many parishioners. Please know that I hold each of you in my heart and am always grateful for the talent and dedication you bring to our parish. Part 4: Empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church fulfills the mission
which Jesus entrusted to all believers
After his death and resurrection, as Jesus ascended to heaven, he entrusted his disciples with the mission to continue what he had begun in his ministry on earth. As his followers accepted this responsibility to be in the world and care for the world, they also came to understand their purpose as the Church of Jesus Christ. Matthew’s gospel describes Jesus commissioning his disciples.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have com-manded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Mt 28:18- 20
The mission of the disciples, which is also our mission today, is clear. We are to make “all nations,” that is everyone, disciples or followers of Jesus. Our outreach is universal or “catholic” in the true sense of that word. And we aspire to bring everyone to Jesus to be his disciple. People join Jesus as his disciples—and join us in the Church—through Baptism and by living as Jesus taught. The entire mission is framed by mercy. God’s mercy comes to us in Jesus Christ who saves us from sin and death. Then, we take that mercy and bring it to a world deeply in need. It would be impossible for us to fulfill the mission and responsibility which Jesus entrusts to us in the Church, if we were to try to accomplish it by dint of our own efforts. In fact, Jesus empowers us in the Church to fulfill the mission through the gift of the Holy Spirit. That mission means that we carry the presence of the Risen Lord into the world, a task and a responsibility we can only understand and undertake if we are prompted by the Holy Spirit. And that Holy Spirit became manifest on Pentecost when the Church first pushed out into the world to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among the, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4
We receive this empowering Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation. We all share in the same Holy Spirit, but the Spirit apportions gifts differently to accomplish the one mission. “We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us…” (Rom 12:6) The Holy Spirit gives the Church the gift of wisdom and discernment to identify the gifts God has given believers and the directions that God wants them to follow. Question: I may be very aware that in Jesus Christ I have received the abundance of God’s mercy and grace in faith, hope, and charity. But am I also aware that I am called not only 5 to receive but to give from what I have received? that as Jesus has been given to me, so with the Holy Spirit’s help I must give him, who is the face of the Father’s mercy, to others in and through the Church?
