President’s Letter By Beth Luebbering

Summer is here! We started the summer off with our Youth Track Program and it was again a great success. We were shortened to 3 weeks due to scheduling conflicts but those 3 weeks were a lot of fun and the turnout each week was great! This has always been one of my favorite CTC sponsored events because of how much the kids love to do it. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help, the youth track program would not happen if it weren’t for all our great volunteer help. Along with track summer means vacations and days by the pool but it also means we are in full planning mode for our two big Fall races. The Malted Mile is set for September 24, and 9th Street Public House and Logboat are back as our title sponsors. This year’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than last year. More of the course will be closed to traffic this year which will help to make the race safer for both our competitors and spectators. We will again have an elite race along with our open

race, family fun walk, and our Special Olympics Athletes half mile. Race time will be an hour earlier than last year and it will again benefit The Columbia Chapter of Special Olympics. There will be a new Malted Mile pint glass for all finishers. After the race, we will have drink specials and refreshments for our adult participants along with our Redwood Financial Family Fun Zone for the kids. I am also excited to announce that this year we will be having Big River Running Company timing both the Heart of America and the Malted Mile. Results will be instantly uploaded to the CTC website as our racers cross the finish line, and participants will have

the option of receiving their time instantly texted to their phone after they finish. If you haven’t yet, like the Malted Mile Facebook Page to keep up to date on all our latest sponsors and who will be competing in the Elite Race. It is going to be a fun downtown event so mark your calendars and invite your friends! If you haven’t heard, CTC also has a new website so check it out and let us know what you think. We will be fine tuning some things on it but we hope you will find it easier to register for races and find your results and other great CTC information. Happy Running!!

Appreciation Dinner

June 5th

We had several volunteers in attendance. One of the high-lights was Joyce Schulte reading her poem which she wrote after walking 100 miles in 1973…. 100k in 16 1/4 hours. See page 10 for the poem.

One Hundred Miles To Go The gun sounded, the race began, Only 400 laps before you stop! My feet moved; first one, then the other. I walked, I think, for the solace of the END. The mist became drizzle; we merely walked on. Some donned wet suits, others only wore clothes. No one melted of shrunk though wet to the bone. The sky became quieter, the rain heavier. Laps became miles, times given in hours now, too. Each lap walked revealed another star. Rain left to reveal a strong breeze, As crazy walkers will, we merely walked on. As laps and hours blurred into a drone, Thoughts moved first outward, then inward. The soul reached outward, grasping in pain; The mind said, “Go on; the end is ahead.” Responses came back from another mind Or was it mine, just sounding odd. “Keep up the good work; your walking looks good.” And all that was left was another 50 miles The world closes in, the soul reaches out, The steps in the race only continue As if the walking turns the world Faster toward the approaching dawn. To each who with faster pace passes, Comments shared extend awakening and courage. Let’s hope they hear my encouragements Because while walking I only can mutter. This race ends officially after 400 laps Or 100 miles, but for each on the track Only a long-distant walker knows that this Race ends only when body and mind say “STOP.” E. Joyce Schulte, ED. S., Written after I walked the 100 miler in 1973…. 100 kilometers In 16 1/4 hours

Andy Emerson ran the 22nd annual (and final) Marathon to Marathon on June 10th,

placing 6th overall in 3 hours 15 minutes. The

race is point to point from Storm Lake, IA to

Marathon IA. Runners were either bused from the finish line to the start or at the finish line they were bused back to the start. There were 229

marathon finishers plus over 250 finishers for the 5K, half marathon and marathon relay. After the marathon runners were provided breakfast or

lunch depending on the time they finished. The organization and the community support of this small town race was impressive and it is sad this

was their last race. More information on Marathon

to Marathon is available at http://www.marathon2marathon.com.
