Minnesota Boys State is a week of study- ing and learning by involve- ment. Trosen will attend the program learning about Minnesota government at the local, county and state levels. These awards are given to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the fine arts. For participating in cross- country, basketball and track, senior, Bryon Schuldt received the Three-Sport Athlete award for 2012. This year’s recipient of the Minnesota MILE award is sophomore, Savannah Gatewood. The Minnesota MILE (Motivating and Inspiring Leadership & Excellence) was formed to identify outstanding high school sophomores through- out Minnesota for being responsible citizens in their community and/or school and provide them with the opportunity and encour- agement to recognize their leadership potential. The Nevis senior class is number one and gives “thumbs up” for their participation in Kids Against Hunger. Studentsin grades 9-12 participated in Kids Against Hunger by helping bag food at Bethany Lutheran Church on Feb. 10. Eachgrade participated for 30 minutes. February is Dental HealthMonth and St. Joseph’s DentalClinic, in combination withthe Minnesota Dental Associ-ation’s “Give Kids a SmileDay,” offered free dentalscreenings, fluoride treatmentsand oral hygiene instruction toall children in pre-kinder-garten through sixth grade re-cently.

On Friday, Feb. 18, a mem-ber of the Dental Clinic willhead to Park Rapids Area Cen-tury School to provide oralhealth education to all kinder-garten classes.

Laporte students were ableto receive free dental healthopportunities last fall whenfluoride varnishes and dentalhealth education were offered.

St. Joseph’s Community Den-tal Clinic, located at 205Pleasant Ave. in Park Rapids,was the first dental clinic of itskind in the state to integratedental care and public healthservices specifically for Min-nesota public program pa-tients.

St. Joseph’s Area HealthServices is part of CatholicHealth Initiatives (CHI), a na-tional nonprofit health organi-zation with headquarters inDenver, CO. CHI’s faith-based system operates in 19states and includes: 73 hospi-tals; 40 long-term care, as-sisted- and residential-livingfacilities; two communityhealth services organizations;and home health agencies. Infiscal year 2010, CHI pro-vided nearly $590 million incharity care and communitybenefit, including services forthe poor, free clinics, educa-tion and research.
