Anne McGovern from Newport, Co. Mayorecently returned fromIndiawhere shewas volunteering for Operation Smile’s

medical mission in the cityBhubaneswar.Anne was joined by fellow Irish volunteer

Caroline Quirke as they helped screen 139patients with 100 operated on over the 10-day mission and she put her skills andexperience to good use as she was taskedwith looking after medical records.

Operation SmileIrelandis a registered Irishcharity and part of a global alliance ofOperation Smile organisations bringing safe, sustainable treatment to children with facialdeformities in the developing world.Operation Smile has provided free surgery tomore than 200,000 children around the worldsince 1982 with the help of over 5,000dedicated medical volunteers. OperationSmile is present in over 60 countries and

completely changes children’s lives, onesmile at a time. Every three minutes, somewhere in the world, a child is born witha cleft. These children typically havedifficulty eating, speaking, socialising andsmiling. They are often shunned andrejected by their communities. InIreland, corrective surgery is easily available, but inthe developing world 75% of cases gountreated. Without outside help, thousandsof children with facial deformities worldwidewill never have the medical care they needto live a normal life. It can take as little as45 minutes and !240 to perform the life-changing surgery that will change a child’slife forever. After the mission Anne had this

to say; ‘No words of mine would adequatelydescribe the poverty and need in this partofIndia. The need for cleft lip and palatesurgery is huge. The mission was one of manysimilar missions now provided inIndiato thepoorest of the poor by Op Smile. Every cleftlip surgery on a child changes their livesforever. It's a simple operation with certainoutcomes. The joy of seeing thistransformation in each patient makes thehard work of the mission so worthwhile I amhumbled to have been part of this mission.’

This November, why not joindevelopment aid agency,Bóthar in the magical

Cotswold Hills in the borderregions of England and Wales? Tireyourself out among breath-takingscenery and then relax with a coollocal brew in the company of newfriends… and all while supportingthe work of Bóthar.

The Cotswolds hills are criss-crossed with dry stone walls. Thepicturesque Cotswold landscape ishall-marked with hidden rivervalleys and distinctive markettowns and villages made of thefamous Cotswold stone. ManyCotswold villages have enigmaticnames such as The Slaughters,Stow-on-the-Wold and GuitingPower. Centuries ago the

Cotswolds was made wealthy bythe wool trade, and the results ofthat wealth can be seen in themany fine manor houses andchurches throughout the area. TheCotswold area is well loved as theideal place to escape for a fewdays. Cotswold summer days arerelaxed and long, but log fires inwinter, spring bluebells or autumncolours are all good reasons whyvisitors come to the Cotswolds atany time of year.

Bóthar founded in 1991,specialises in the use of livestocksuch as dairy heifers and dairygoats in it aid programmesoverseas. Through time, poorfamilies are empowered toexperience a better life throughtraining and sustainable micro

farming projects. Currently,Bóthar is desperately trying toraise enough funds to completethe creation of a small creameryfor an impoverished community inin Rusizi, Rwanda, which is amongthe poorest communities in theworld. The families there arealready recipients of Bóthar dairyheifers airlifted in recent yearsbut now they are ready for thenext stage of development; theirnew creamery. This will allow thefamilies there to not just addshelf-life to their dairy productsbut will also allow them increasedincome.

Bóthar animals are now assistingcommunities and families on theirroad to a better life; a lifecontaining new possibilities interms of health and education.Rwanda is one of many countrieswhere the spectacular gift or anIrish cow can make a world ofdifference. The simple basic taskof looking after the animal gives aform of ‘employment’. Then thefood supply that follows in theform of milk production andancillary dairy products ensurebetter nutrition and well-being.Through time, an extra animal cancreate an income providingeducation for the children of thefamily. Most families in suchsituations become independent ofthe project in a five year period atwhich time they can continueunaided on their road toempowerment.

Challenge treks in renowned

historic and farming traditionlocations are a feature of Bótharfundraising events. Locations suchas the Yorkshire Dales and theolive groves of Umbria in Italyhave proved successes in the past.Pat McCarrick, FundraisingProjects Director with Bóthar said,“In an effort to maintain fundingto established projects and inorder to create new opportunitiesfor poor families, we have to putfundraising events in place but welike to create win/win events. Wefeel our livestock projects deservesupport but we also make ourevents as interesting andrewarding as possible. Walking inspecial locations meets thisdemand for us but moreimportantly, it provides a greatopportunity for our supporters.”

If you like to walk, need anautumn break or simply admirethe work of Bóthar you areencouraged to get involved in thisinaugural event. An all-inclusiveprice of !950 per person isrequired. This includes flights, accommodation, food and expertlocal guides as well as yourfundraising contribution to thecharity. Irish Fertility ClinicsForced to Self Regulate

THE National Infertility Support and InformationGroup (NISIG) will call for urgent government actionon the report of the Commission on Assisted HumanReproduction at their National Conference on Sep-tember 14th. There is currently no governing bodyfor Irish fertility clinics in Ireland and NISIG believe aset of regulations, guidelines or standards urgentlyneed to be implemented by the government for theprotection of both Irish clinics and patients. The re-port, published in 2005, was thorough and detailed, however it needs to be updated and… implemented.

The National Conference on Infertility will takeplace on Saturday September 14th in Thomond Park,Limerick. Forty-year-old Sligo boxer Stephen 'Block'Reynolds is looking to turn back theyears as he faces unbeaten 25-year-old

knockout artist, Declan Trainor, for the CelticNations cruiserweight title in only his thirdappearance in the pro ranks on the packed'Celtic Clash' bill at the Devenish Complex inBelfast on Saturday, September 14.

In his opening year as a professional boxerthe veteran earned a hard fought points winover Uganda's Moses 'The Black Mamba'Matovu in Belfast, and last time out Reynoldsfloored Lithuanian tough-nut, Ruslan Bitarov, four times on route to a spectacular secondround knockout victory which boosted hisranking in the Irish Cruiserweight divisionfrom 9th to 5th place in a period of just sixmonths.

“I got a great start to the pro game but itall went quiet in the last six months due toshows being called off and quality opponentsnot being available, but that’s all changednow and I’ve got the biggest challenge of myboxing career ahead of me against DeclanTrainor for the Celtic Nations belt," said fivetime Irish amateur champion Reynolds, “Myopening fight versus Matovu was a real eyeopener to be honest. I knew the jump fromamateur code to the pros was a big one and Ilearned on my debut not to underestimatethese guys or it could be lights out.

“I knew what to expect when the Bitarovfight came around. We decided not to givehim a second of peace, and to whip in thebody shots from the first bell. Luckily we gotsome video of him from a contact in Europeand we knew he didn’t cope well with anassault to the body.

“The plan worked to perfection, but fairplay to Bitarov because he was game andreally came to win. He could’ve easily quitafter he went down from the firstknockdown, but he kept getting up andcoming at me. It was over quickly but Itrained hard for that fight because it was astep up in class and a step up from the fourround to six round level. I’ll have to workeven harder again for this fight in Belfast as

its another step up to 8 rounds which leavesthe door open for an Irish title shot then,”added the Ballinacarrow Boxing Club coach.

“I’ve watched a bit of Trainor on YouTube,he’s a ferocious all-action puncher withaccurate hands and fast feet. He has won allhis fights by first round knockout so I’ll haveto have my wits about me from the openingbell. He started his pro career in Australiaand stopped one of their champions in thefirst round. That was just Declan’s debut andis still the only fight that his opponent hasever lost, so you can imagine it sent a bit ofa shock wave through the scene,” outlinedReynolds.

Trainor carried on in Ireland where he leftoff in Australia with first round demolition ofHungarian brawler Tamas Danko in March ofthis year.

“I know it’s a risky fight and a lot ofpeople are making Trainor a favourite to beatme in Belfast but I haven’t got the time tohang around and fight soft opponents. At mystage I haven’t time to waste, I want thebest in Ireland and I want them now. It’s areally evenly matched fight but I know mystrength and experience will be enough toovercome Trainor’s speed and youth on thenight,” explained unbeaten Reynolds.

“Stephen has been a revelation sinceturning pro,” said manager Leonard Gunning.“No one comes into a pro ring in bettercondition than Stephen and I know how hardhe works to get himself in that shape. Weknow he hasn’t got another 10 or 15 yearsleft in his career like regular boxers who turnprofessional, so his acceleration through theranks is on fast forward.

“It makes exciting viewing for the drovesof supporters that travel from Sligo to watchhis fights. This is a very risky fight forStephen, he could have taken a much softerfight but built his record up to 10-0 he isalways pushing for hard fights and now hehas gotten his wish.”

The show, dubbed the ‘Celtic Clash’features two other Celtic Nations title fightand rising talent from across Ireland

including unbeaten fighters likeCommonwealth Games gold medallist PaddyGallagher, Ireland’s only female pro boxerChristina McMahon and Irish boxing’s‘Prospect of the Year 2012’ Anthony Cacacewith Daniel ‘Insane’ McShane, Joe Hillerbyand the ‘Buncrana Banger’ John Hutchinsonalso bringing more quality to the show.

Tickets for Stephen’s bout at the DevenishComplex, Belfast on Saturday, September14th, range from £30 for unreserved seatingand £45 for a ringside position. Return busfrom Sligo for just !10.

Hapless farmer getscute puppy to lookafter his sheep – turnsout to be a wolf

We all know the story about the boy whocried wolf but a hapless Polish farmer has of-fered a new take on the classic fable.

The agriculturalist was left red-faced afterdiscovering a ‘stray’ puppy he had taken in tolook after his flock of sheep was actually awolf.

Embarrassed Zbigniew Pieczyk, 50, fromPodlasie only realised his mistake when theyoung wolf ‘howled all night’.

‘I thought it was a sheepdog pup or a Ger-man shepherd,’ the sheepish farmer ex-plained.

‘Then when it started to howl every night Irealised I’d made one hell of a mistake and Icalled the police.’

Thankfully, the young wolf didn’t attackany sheep and is now set to be returned tothe wild after his unlikely adventure.

IF wacky racer Dick Dastardly is ever paralysed in a carwreck, he’ll surely be ordering one of these.Lance Greathouse’s mobility scooter – christened LordHumungous – has a flame-thrower that spits fire 10m(35ft), around the length of a double-decker bus.

The dental equipment engineer, who sends disabledpeople ‘pimped’ wheelchairs, spent a month and$1,000 (£645) building the contraption out of en elec-tric golf cart, a helicopter seat, all-terrain tyres andold dental machines.

I love fire and wheelchairs so I thought why not putthem together,’ the 52-year-old, from Phoenix, Ari-zona, said.

‘I would like to see some street gang member messwith someone in one of my chairs.’

Feeling hungry?Britain’s biggest burgercontains 25,000 calories

With a name like the Apocalypse Burger, therecan be no coming back for anyone braveenough to tackle this giant meat feast.

Restaurant owners Dave Cossar and JustinMeaney might need some bigger plates aftercreating Britain’s biggest burger.

The 11kg (25lb) monster meal at JD’s Grill inPlymouth contains 25,000 calories and was cre-ated to celebrate the restaurant’s one-year an-niversary.

It took three chefs six hours to prepare andcook the jumbo burger which contains £150worth of ingredients.

‘The burger was originally created to cele-brate our anniversary but we are looking athow we could put it on the menu,’ explainedMr Meaney.

We would have to find a way to bring theprice down a little and make it easier to buildand cook in the kitchen without compromisingon the quality of the ingredients.’

He added: ‘We served it up to about 14 or15 people and they absolutely loved it.

‘It was one massive burger, and a real sightto behold – but an hour later every last bite hadgone.’

Afarmer has flooded the home of chil-dren’s TV favourites the Teletubbies –because she was sick of tourists tres-

passing on her land in Wimpstone, Warwick-shire.

The hill house used by Dipsy, Laa-laa, TinkyWinky and Po in the CBeebies show has beenturned into a pond by the farmer.

When the Bafta-winning show, which wasshot on the farm from 1997 to 2001, was axedthe television set was removed leaving just agentle grassy slope.

But Teletubbies fans kept trespassing on thehill until owner Rosemary Harding moved thediggers in and turned the site into a pond.

‘People were jumping fences and crossingcattle fields,’ said the 63-year-old, who runsan aquatics shop at the countryside location.

‘To be honest, we’re pleased to see theback of it,’ she told the Sunday People.

The hill was decorated with a magic wind-mill, windows and flowers during the show’sfour-year run, which is still being shown onchildren’s TV channel CBeebies.

The BBC filmed 365 episodes of the Tele-tubbies and it went on to be worldwide TVhit.

Dipsy, Laa-laa Tinky Winky and Po alsotopped the pop charts. The show’s themetune ‘Teletubbies Say Eh Oh’ reached No.1 inDecember 1997, and sold more than one mil-lion copies to stay in the Top 75 for 32 weeks.

The IFA has challenged the Minister for Agriculture,Simon Coveney, to defend farm funding in the up-coming Budget negotiations.

In a move which will increase the pressure on MinisterCoveney ahead of the Cabinet's Budget 2014 delibera-tions, IFA president John Bryan accused Minister Coveneyof overseeing deep cuts to farm schemes in the last twobudgets.

"Spending on farm schemes between 2011 and 2013 hasfallen by 18pc or !119m, compared to a reduction of 8pcor !60m across the rest of Minister Coveney's depart-ment," Mr Bryan said.

Mr Bryan said the next EU Rural Development Pro-gramme to run up to 2020 would be a major test of theGovernment's commitment to the sector.

"It is hugely important that the Government commits to50:50 national/EU co-financing with national top-ups toensure a strong Rural Development Programme supportingvulnerable sectors and regions, through measures such asDisadvantaged Areas and agri-environmental schemes."

Farmers splashed out more than!20m on combine harvesters thisyear in an effort to avoid weather

delays when harvesting their crops. The move followed a bleak, wet

spring in which farmers battled withthe worst fodder shortage in livingmemory. Following almost 12 monthsof rain, tillage farmers vowed not tobe caught on the back foot when har-

vesting their badly needed cerealcrops.

Some 75 new combines were regis-tered in Ireland so far this year, cost-ing between !150,000 and !475,000each. At an average price of !275,000,the total outlay was !20.6m.

Figures from the Farm Tractor andMachinery Trade Association (FTMTA)show that combine sales for this year

are tracking the record figures of2012, when 78 new combines wereregistered.

FTMTA chief executive Gary Ryan de-scribed the sales as "remarkable".

"The higher sales seem to have beendriven by people looking at the terri-ble spring and fearing a repeat of lastyear's harvest, which all had to bedone in one week basically," he said.

The Landini 5-H Series which rangesfrom 74 up to 110 hp is a compacttractor with excellent loading handling

ability. There are five models in the range:the 80 model powered by a naturally-aspi-rated engine, the 90 model powered by aturbocharged engine followed by threeturbo aftercooled models, the 100, 110 and115. The new Perkins 1104D engines fittedon the 5-H are an essential and powerfuladdition to this excellent weight-to-powerratio series. All models in the series are available in“Top” and “Techno” versions. The Top ver-sion features a power shuttle with threepowershift speeds and a Shuttle ModulationControl (SMC) function. This function allows

the operator to tweak the reaction of theclutch pedal and power shuttle by settlingon a more aggressive setting for some jobsand a gentler engagement for others. Inother words the operator can fine-tune theresponsiveness of each to suit differentworking circumstances and personal prefer-ence.

Both the power shuttle and mechanicalshuttle versions feature the same 4350 kgcapacity mechanical rear lift and aDromone telescopic hitch is part of thestandard package. The addition of the tele-scopic hitch makes picking up a trailed im-plement a treat! All controls are simple touse and in convenient positions in the cab.The front loader joystick is located close tothe operators arm rest on the right of theseat.

A recent restyling process has added anew one-piece bonnet which, thanks to itsnew design now reflects the same appear-ance as on the bigger 4 and 6 cylinder mod-els. The headlamps are incorporated intothis new bonnet as well as corner lampsabove the headlamps for additional light.

Irish farmer’s interest to date on the 5-HSeries has been focused on the 100 and 110models rated at 92 and 102 hp respectively. The new hydraulic circuit provides a maxi-mum total oil flow of 82.2 l/min. The PTOcomes with 540 and 1000 rpm as standard.

The entry level power shuttle version isavailable with 12 + 12 (with no powershifts)or with 36 + 12 (with 3 powershifts) speedtransmissions. The Techno version (mechan-ical shuttle) is a 24 + 12 speed box. A creeptransmission is available on both Techno andTop versions.

In summary, the flagship model; the 5-110H combines a stylist appearance withsimplicity and compactness to be a power-ful Perkins workhorse and an ideal loadertractor.

Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department is organ-ising a regional Timber Marketing Day on Thursday12 September 2013 at the Lough Allen Hotel & Spa,

Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim. This is a great opportunity tomeet with those buying timber in your area and discussservices, options and prices .

Most forest owners realise the benefits of timely thin-ning. However many have queries about how to get thejob done. In response this Timber Marketing Day will ad-dress the following questions: • Is my forest ready for thinning? How will the thinningoperation be carried out? • Is there the potential to co-ordinate thinning with otherforest owners?• What is the best way to sell my timber? • What price range can I expect?

This free event will run from 10am to 2pm (registrationcommencing at 9.30am). All welcome.

The day will start with an outdoor demonstration, or-ganised by the Irish Forestry and Forest Products Associa-tion, on the importance of timber quality for Irishsawmills and the best way to ensure such quality.

This will be followed by short presentations from Tea-gasc, foresters and harvesting contractors. Local ForestOwner Groups will also give their perspective and sharetheir experiences.

The most important part of the day will be the ampleopportunities for forest owners to talk to foresters, con-tractors and timber companies who will have stands pres-ent.

Ahead of their meeting in the AllIreland Final we take a look backat five memorable games between

two intense if infrequent rivals. While there are remarkably few cham-pionship clashes between the two to re-flect on – nine in total and only two inthe last 26 years – there is usuallyplenty of drama involved whetherDublin and Mayo meet in the champi-onship or the Allianz League.

All-Ireland Semi-Final 2012: Mayo 0-19 Dublin 0-16

“Dublin! Dublin in Croke Park, it doesn’tget any bigger. An All-Ireland semi-finalwith 82,000 people in Croke Park!”The words of the legendary Mayo play-maker Ciarán McDonald, a man who sixyears earlier had written his name in-delibly into the great Dublin-Mayo nar-rative, summing up what the sight of aSky Blue jersey in late August at HQmeans to any Mayo man.Going into this game against the reign-ing All-Ireland champions without theircaptain and attacking fulcrum AndyMoran, few gave Mayo much chance. However, playing some sweet attackingfootball orchestrated by Alan Dillon,James Horan’s side raced into a 0-12 to

0-6 lead at the break. With AidanO’Shea and Barry Moran outstanding inmidfield, the Westerners were 10 clear(0-17 to 0-7) at one stage in the secondhalf after a run of five consecutivescores, including three from CillianO’Connor.Dublin manager Pat Gilroy’s decision torisk bringing on the injured Alan Broganat half-time backfired as the then Foot-baller of the Year lasted just 17 minutesbefore being hauled off again with agroin problem. In a frantic finale, Dublin kicked eightpoints in a row and threatened a monu-mental comeback, but goalkeeper DavidClarke made an incredible save fromBernard Brogan three minutes from full-time and O’Connor then ended a 22-minute spell without a score in injurytime before Séamus O’Shea added theinsurance point.“We seemed to run out of juice a littlebit, and they were coming at us inwaves, so it was last-ditch defendingbut we managed to keep it out, and weshowed great character at the end,"said Horan.

Allianz Football League Division I2012: Mayo 0-20 Dublin 0-8The first attempt at this Round 2 fixturewas abandoned at half-time last Febru-ary when fog descended on MacHalePark and forced the referee to postponethe game. Back for a second attempt atthe same venue in late March, accord-ing to the Irish Times, “Dublin walkeddown a blind alley and got mugged.”There were more than 12,000 witnessesin Castlebar but many struggled to offeran explanation. Mayo had lost to Cork aweek earlier while Dublin beat Donegalby nine points. There was nothing tosuggest a massacre. However, with Alan Dillon, Conor Mor-

timer and Michael Conroy all giving anexhibition of long-range point-taking,Mayo were 0-13 to 0-5 ahead at thebreak after a first half bombardment.Dublin had Paul Flynn sent off at thestart of the second half and DiarmuidConnolly then followed him to the linefor a second yellow card offence. The dismissals ended any forlorn hopeof a Dublin revival, and it was left toMortimer to decorate the scoreline witha few more super points, bringing hishaul for the evening to eight, which sawhim surpass Joe Corcoran as Mayo’s all-time top scorer.“We never got near the pitch of thatgame at all. From start to finish therewas only one team in it,” said a shell-shocked Dublin manager Pat Gilroy af-terwards.

All-Ireland Semi-Final 2006: Mayo 1-16 Dublin 2-12The afternoon famously started with arow over territorial rights to warm-upin front of the ‘Hill’ and ended up withCiarán McDonald kicking a storied win-ning point for Mayo. The notoriously shyCrossmolina man had changed and wasin a car on the way back home 15 min-utes later, but it is a moment that willbe remembered by fans of the Green

and Red forever. After the pre-match furore died down,Dublin looked to have the matchwrapped up when they led by 2-11 to 0-10 after 46 minutes thanks to goalsfrom Conal Keaney and Jason Sherlock. However, Mickey Moran’s charges lit theafter-burners in the final quarter andoutscored their opponents by 1-6 to 0-1over the remainder of the game tocause a massive upset. Andy Moran gotthe goal that got the ball rolling, butMcDonald’s moment of genius two min-utes from the end settled the game.“I remember kicking that point and thecrowd going crazy,” McDonald recalledin an interview with GAA.ie last sum-mer. “I remember being seven pointsdown and the substitutes that we put inall clicking. I remember Andy Moran’sgoal.“But my biggest memory is giving an ab-solutely brutal pass that Darren Mageecut out. The ball went down to the farcorner of the Canal End and I said tomyself, ‘here we go again’.“It went out for a ‘45’, a combinationof Clarkey (goalkeeper David Clarke)

and David Brady punched it out. It justshows the thin line from one secondbeing totally elated to making an ab-solute mess of things a minute later.”

All-Ireland Semi-Final Replay 1985:Dublin 2-12 Mayo 1-7The drawn game at Croke Park finished1-13 apiece, after Mayo had taken anearly lead through a Noel Durcan goalbut they allowed Dublin to take controlof the game by half-time. With the helpof an excellent performance fromprodigy Pádraig Brogan, and a pointfrom the boot of 42-year-old Billy Fitz-patrick, the Westerners came back to

level the game.Inevitably, Dublin were far too strong inthe replay. The game, however, will befondly remembered for Pádraig Brogan’sremarkable goal, voted that season’sbest, and a brilliant performance fromWillie Joe Padden.

All-Ireland Semi-Final Replay 1955:Dublin 1-8 Mayo 1-7

The first game was played in a rain-storm and Dublin only earned a reprievewhen Nicky Maher, wearing goggles overhis spectacles, kicked a late free toforce a 1-4 to 0-7 draw and a replay.Although Mayo at the time were consid-ered to be past their best having wonback-to-back All-Ireland titles in 1950-’51, they once against fought to the bit-ter end against a Dublin side playing anew brand of ‘modern’ football. However, Dublin, who featured the lateKevin Heffernan, prevailed by a singlepoint on a much more benign day inCroke Park the second time around onlyto lose to Kerry in the final.

If you’ve been considering planting someof your farm, now is the time to act tohave approval for this Autumn/Winter

season. Your local Co-op forester can in-spect your land and advise you on the Af-forestation scheme and the Tax Freeannual premium that you would receive(see example below).

Like most applications for grant aid, there is a procedure that must be fol-lowed. After your application is submit-ted to the Department it can take onaverage 3-6 months for approval to begranted, so if your thinking of plantingsome of your land next season – Act Now.

So why consider Forestry?• Tax Free income for 20yrs• Full planting grant – costs you nothing• Retain your Single Farm Payment• Retain 100% ownership of Trees and Land• Timber is a Secure Pension Plan

Forest Premium Example – Say 8 hectares(20 acres) planted on wet rushy marginalland:8ha x !427/ha = !3416/year for 20 yearsTax Free (and you still own the timber andthe land and a grant covered the plantingcosts). When you Clearfell it say 30 yrslater it is returning an average !24,000/ha(x 8ha = !192,000 Lump Sum).If you are considering forestry contact yourlocal Co-op Forester and arrange a freesite visit and consultation (see our adverton this page). Western Forestry Co-op havebeen looking after farmers since 1985. Wehave a long tradition in farmer forestryand will advise you on the forestry optionsthat are best suited to you. The Co-opethos of transparency, openness and hon-esty are the foundation of what we do.Even if you submit an application your arenot obliged to plant it if you change yourmind.

Thinking of Forestry – Now is the Time to ActMarina Conway, Manager, Western Forestry Co-op

THE Department of Agriculture has con-firmed it is currently examining a numberof suggestions relating to a disposalscheme for unwanted horses.

The move comes as animal welfarecharities warn of a looming crisis this au-tumn and winter that they say would seethousands of horses die slow and painful

deaths through neglect. Some 6,445 horses and ponies were

slaughtered for human consumption inthe first half of this year, putting thecountry on track to slaughter around12,000 for the full year. However, this isjust half the 24,411 horses that wereslaughtered in 2012.

Strict regulations on the passports ofhorses for slaughter means thousands ofhorses are excluded from factory dis-posal, leaving many with no viable outletfor animals.

Barbara Bent of the ISPCA said shecould clearly see the need for a horsedisposal scheme to prevent unnecessarysuffering but added that it was essentialthe existing horse identification ruleswere implemented.

DEAD AND WORN-OUT ANIMALS

“PARTLY as a result of intensive lobbying byour association and others there have beensome positive measures in the areas offarm transfers and consolidations intro-duced in recent budgets. We’d particularlyrecognise the ‘half rate’ 1% Stamp Duty fortransfers to close relatives, the extensionof the Young Trained Farmers Stamp DutyRelief to 31 December 2015 and the CapitalGains Tax Restructuring Relief as logicaland welcome. Those measures need to bebuilt upon if we are to address the continu-ing problems around farm fragmentationand the possibilities of expansion that willloom large post-quota from 2015 onwards. For a start, the 1% rate for transfers toclose relatives due to expire at the end of2014 must be extended to facilitate expan-sion and sensible succession planning. TheYoung Trained Farmer Relief requirementfor 50% of normal working time to be spentfarming is difficult to establish and verifyand should be changed to a five year reten-tion of ownership and use of land qualifica-tion. Budget 2013 provided for an increasein the rate of CGT to 33% representing anincrease of 65% since 2008. ICMSA totallyopposes any further increase and calls forthe reintroduction of indexation which waswithdrawn in 2002”, said Mr Comer.

“ICMSA believes that the reductions inthe CAT tax-free thresholds in successivebudgets have been excessive and haveworked as a disincentive on land transfers.

We believe that the retention of 90% agri-cultural relief for CAT is absolutely essen-tial to ensure transfer from one generationto the next. We also firmly hold that farmfamilies should be able to avail of the sametax relief for farm leases as non-relatedfarm persons. The current tax code doesnot allow the same tax relief for landleases to related persons as non-familymembers which is causing difficulties forfarm families that wish to lease the farm tothe next generation prior to retirementage. We also urge the Minister to look at ameasure for Budget 2014 that will permitstock relief whereby if the receipts fromthe forced disposal of stock this year dueto the fodder crisis are reinvested in live-stock in 2014 or 2015, the farmer con-cerned can claim stock relief at 100% withproportionate reductions if the farmer doesnot invest the full amount received fromthe forced disposal of live stock”, he con-tinued

“ICMSA draws attention to the NationalFarm Survey Preliminary Estimates 2012that indicate that family farm incomes fellby 15% in that year. The cuts to farmschemes contained in successive budgetshave contributed to this fall and the fodderand consequent financial crisis experiencedin 2013 should alert the Minister to the re-quirement to fund fully the farm schemeson which so many families depend”, con-cluded the ICMSA President.

Budget 2014 – ICMSA want consolidationmeasures to continue and protection offarm schemes

Waterproof boxershorts let you keepgadgets in your pants

IF you’ve ever jumped into a hotel pool andhad that sinking feeling your mobile was still inyour pocket then you probably need to changeyour pants.

A revolutionary pair of boxer shorts could bethe answer.

They allow you to take a dip and to keepyour valuables safe and dry next to your, erm, valuables.

The lightweight briefs have two airtightpockets to store your passport, cash and creditcards and are waterproof to 60m (200ft).

Nigel Clifford, co-founder of AdventureUnderwear, said: ‘Before I went travelling toSouth America, I was warned about pickpocketsand thieves by all my friends.

‘One of them mentioned that women are OKbecause they can keep their cash and creditcard in their bras but guys don’t have thatoption.

‘So I made my first prototype pair ofunderwear before leaving for South Americaand kept my passport, cash and credit card init at all times.’

Mr Clifford, 26, of Perth, Australia, added hedecided to add the second, waterproof pocketwhen his friend’s camera was stolen onCopacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro.

He is now working on a women’s version ofthe Merino wool pants and hopes to have themon the market in November, just in time forsummer in the southern hemisphere.

Apple to invite you and yourfriends to an iPhone-poweredsilent disco?Apple has filed a patent thatdescribes a method of creating, essentially, your very own silent

disco using little more than a bunchof iOS devices and someheadphones.Apple’s patent details a system thatworks slightly differently, becausethere is no central device acting asthe DJ and broadcasting the same

tune to every other user. Instead acollection of networked iPhones,iPod Touches or iPads will sharetempo information, which meanseveryone in the group can listen todifferent music but at (roughly) thesame BPM.

Kinect lets you look your Skypecaller in the eyeOne of the problems with Skypevideo calls is that you and yourcounterpart are rarely looking eachother in the eye, because you’regazing at their on-screen imagerather than directly into yourwebcam. It’s all a bit jarring.

A new software prototype from theComputer Graphics Laboratory ETHZurich aims to change that usingfacial recognition and the Xbox360’s Kinect camera. The cameraand software isolate the caller’sface and rotate it slightly, creatingthe illusion of eye contact. Only theface is moved, and done soseamlessly – the rest of the imageremains untouched.

One in ten children ‘have mobile by fifth birthday’WE’VE become used to the daily sight of obsessivecommuters hunched over their smartphones – but parentsare getting their children hooked early with almost one inten given their first mobile phone before they are five, astudy shows.

‘As well as arming kids with mobiles for emergencies andpeace of mind, I’d imagine that many parents have boughttheir kids smartphones just to stop them commandeeringtheir own when bored,’ said telecoms expert Ernest Doku atuSwitch.com.

Children spend an average £11 per month on theirmobiles, compared with their parents who spend £19.

Parents are also likely to spend more money on their first-born’s phone and bills than on younger siblings.

However, more than one in ten youngsters have highercharges than their mother or father.

But, despite the costs of additional data and minutes, more than four in ten adults do not pay attention to theirchild’s phone bill. Only one in four cap their youngster’scontracts.

Fewer than one in 20 disable the data function on theirchild’s phones so they are only able to use them to call andtext. Mr Doku recommended parents place caps on theirchild’s mobile bills.

There have been several stories of children running up bigbills by accessing in-game paid-for add ons.

‘Make sure that when they’re at home, your kids arebrowsing the web using wi-fi instead of consuming data byconnecting to the internet via 3G or 4G,’ he added.

Some 1,420 parents with children aged under 16 wereconsulted for the uSwitch study.

In a reminder that we mere humans are asfragile as a bubble, Nasa has released a map ofall the known asteroids that are passing Earthwith just a whisker between us.

The 1,400 asteroids, whose orbits are given aweb-like appearance in the spirograph, areconsidered fairly dangerous but are notexpected to pose an imminent threat for atleast another 100 years.

The ‘potentially hazardous asteroids’ (PHA)are large – estimated at about 460ft or 140m insize – and can reportedly pass within 4.7millionmiles of the Earth’s orbit.

In these terms – that’s pretty close.‘This “potential” to make close Earth

approaches does not mean a PHA will impactthe Earth. It only means there is a possibilityfor such a threat,’ said Nasa on its website.

‘By monitoring these PHAs and updatingtheir orbits as new observations becomeavailable, we can better predict the close-approach statistics and thus their Earth-impactthreat.’ In February of this year a PHA knownas 2012 DA14 passed Earth within a margin of17,200 miles, which is closer than somesatellites in geosynchronous orbit. The asteroidwas 150ft in diameter and passed safely.

LAND ROVER has releaseddetails of its first productionhybrid SUVs, which will be

capable of 44mpg and be ratedat 169g/km of CO2.

The figures, shared across theRange Rover Hybrid and RangeRover Sport Hybrid, are asignificant improvement on thestandard diesel drivetrain’s37.7mpg and 196g/km in thelatest Range Rover, but the firmclaims that the new systemoffers performance on a par withthe exceptional SDV8 models.

Power is put to the roadthrough an eight-speed ZFgearbox. The entire hybridsystem weighs 120kg, making itrelatively lightweight for itstype. It produces 125lb.ft oftorque to add to the engine’s

output and can even power thecar independently.

Using a driver-selectable EVmode, the Range Rover Hybridswill be able to drive at up to30mph on electric power only fora range of up to a mile.

As such the hybrid system isdesigned only as a supplement toreduce load on the engine, reducing fuel consumption bymaking life easier for the dieselV6.

The drivetrain’s combinedoutput is 336bhp and 516lb.ft,the latter coming between1,500rpm and 3,000rpm. Bothmodels will accelerate to 62mphin less than seven seconds, whiletop speed is 135mph, or 140mphfor the Sport.

The latest generation models

were designed with theintegration of a hybrid system inmind. The liquid-cooled batterypack is mounted beneath thefloor of the vehicle in aprotective boron-steel cradlewithout impacting on the cabinor luggage space.

The larger vehicle has thesame five-seat capacity andluggage space as the standardRange Rover and retains the full-size spare wheel, and the RangeRover Sport Hybrid’s 5+2 layoutis also unchanged from thestandard model.

To prove the new system'sreliability, three Range RoverHybrids are set to drive from theSolihull factory to Mumbai,India, on an old trade routeknown as the Silk Trail.=

PEUGEOT has created anon-plug-in hybrid 208supermini capable of

returning just 49g/km ofCO2 while being able to hit62mph from a standstill ineight seconds flat.

The way cars are builtcould be completely rede-fined if technological

achievements made byPeugeot are adopted intothe mainstream.

Currently only plug-inhybrid cars are able torecord such low emissionsfigures, but Peugeot hasemployed an amazing se-ries of existing technolo-gies and fresh thinking to

present a largely realisticemissions-reducing plat-form.

The 208 Hybrid FE has nopower steering but rides onslim 145-section 19-inchtyres. It’s wrapped in amixture of carbon fibrebody panels and part-poly-carbonate glazing, and usesa revolutionary suspensionsystem that saves kilogramsof weight at each corner.

Working with companiesincluding Hutchinson, CCPComposites and fuel refinerTotal’s polymers division,Peugeot has been able tobring together a radicalnew car concept that couldentirely reshape the waycars are built.

Many now-traditionalsystems are done awaywith altogether, like powersteering and servo-assistedbrakes. The thin tyres, light weight and energy re-cuperation braking makeadditional assistance un-

necessary, and the result isa much more analogue carthan modern drivers areused to.

The remarkable 208 Hy-brid FE needs no homecharging station. It uses aself-managing hybrid sys-tem and cannot be pluggedin to the national grid, inthe same way as the ultra-successful Toyota Prius.Connected to a frugal 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrolengine – actually a modi-fied version of Peugeot’s1.0-litre unit – is a super-efficient motor that weighsjust 7kg.

It uses ordinary 95 RONunleaded fuel and achievedthe 49g/km target usingstandard fuel. It also prom-ises to be a completelynormal driving experience, potentially turning produc-tion cars that use the Hy-brid FE’s technology intoindustry-wide game-chang-ers.

VOLKSWAGEN has entered theelectric car race with two pro-duction-ready models: the e-Golf

and the e-Up.The two new models use similar dri-

vetrains, with the e-Golf’s largely justan up-scaled version with a more pow-erful motor and larger batteries. The113bhp (85kW) electric motor in theGolf should provide a range of 118miles, while the Up’s system generates81bhp (60kW) and a 100-mile range.

VW has designed the drivetrainsfrom scratch, producing them entirelyin-house to maintain quality controland developmental freedom.

In a press release accompanyingnews of the new electric duo’s arrival,Volkswagen claims that the e-Up setsan efficiency benchmark with 62 milespotentially costing less than £2.60;half what the same mileage would costeven in a very efficiently-drivenpetrol-powered Up. The same mileagein the e-Golf will cost around 10%more.

The technology involved should befamiliar to anyone well acquaintedwith the Nissan Leaf or any of Re-nault’s electric Z.E. models, albeitwith a rather more complex arrange-ment of driving modes.

Two principal options labelled Ecoand Eco+ join four modes that offerenhanced braking regeneration fromthe motor: D1, D2, D3 and B. Theseare designed for use in differing trafficconditions and down hills, where themotor might be used as the mainbrake to recover as much energy aspossible.

Direct current (DC) quick-charging isan option, with 80% of a full charge forthe e-Golf coming up in around half anhour, in the same way as for the Leaf.

DRIVERS may be forced to have their carsfitted with technology which keeps themwithin the speed limit under new road safety

rules being considered by the EU.New cars would have to feature systems capable

of detecting limits through cameras or satellitesand automatically applying the brakes.

Existing cars could be forced back to the garageto be fitted with the devices, which would meanthat no car in the UK could go over the 70mphspeed limit for motorways.

But Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin hasinstructed officials to fight the move after he wasasked for his views ahead of formal proposals bythe European Commission (EC) this autumn.

A Goverment source said: "It is definitelysomething that he is keen to resist and he has toldofficials that it is something we don't want to do.

"To be forced to have automatic controls in yourcar amounts to Big Brother nannying by EUbureaucrats."

The EC's Mobility and Transport Departmentwants to roll out the "Intelligent Speed Authority"(ISA) technology in an attempt to cut the death tollfrom road collisions by a third by 2020.

More than 30,000 people die on the road in EUcountries every year and 1.5 million are injured, with 120,000 left permanently disabled.

But Mr McLoughlin has told officials that the UKhas one of the best road safety records in Europe, with deaths down from 1,901 to 1,754 last year -

the lowest figure since records began in 1926.French roads saw 3,645 die in accidents last year,

while Germany suffered 3,657 fatalities.ISA technology can use satellites which beam

limits automatically to cars from a database orcameras which are able to read road signs.

The AA said that while an audible speed alertwould be a welcome new feature, limiting speedautomatically could create dangers of its own.

A spokesman for the motoring association said:"It could take away people's ability to getthemselves out of trouble with a quick burst ofspeed, such as in overtaking situations where thecapacity to accelerate can avoid a head-oncollision."

A spokesman for the EC told the Mail on Sunday:'It is part of the Commission's job - because it hasbeen mandated to do so by member states, including the UK - to look at, promote researchinto and consult stakeholders about new road-safety technology which might ultimately savelives. This is done in close co-operation withmember states and the UK has generallysupported such efforts.'

"There is a currently consultation focusing onspeed-limiting technology already fitted to HGVsand buses.

"Taking account of the results, the Commissionwill publish in the autumn a document by itstechnical experts which will no doubt refer to ISAamong many other things."

The liver is one of the mostimportant organs that helpthe natural detoxification

process within the body. Humanbodies need healthy livers to fightagainst the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing theimmune system and is an impor-tant part of digestion.

The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glu-cose by the body in times of need.It can store quantities of glycogenenough for up to 24 hours.

The liver is one of the naturaldetoxifying agents of the body. The human body is exposed totoxins every day. Hormones influ-

encing physical and mental well-being are activated in the liver. The liver further breaks themdown into water-soluble sub-stances and they are passed outthrough stool and urine.

Excessive storage of toxins inthe body hampers the naturalprocesses of the liver. Some of themost common symptoms are achronic fatigue, headaches, and adiminished bile flow. Impairedliver functions can cause viral in-fections of the liver and alcoholinduced fatty deposits.

The best time for a liver detoxis spring. The warm weather is theperfect time for a diet full of fil-

tered water, raw fruits and veg-etables. A liver flush is one of themost simple and popular types ofcleansing techniques. It is used forthe elimination of excess fattyacids and other toxic substancesfrom the liver. The liver flush canbe described as a regimen of lightexercise supported with an intakeof herbal teas and the liver flushmixture.

The liver flush mixture is a mix-ture of freshly squeezed citrusand lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a smallamount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon ofolive oil. A natural food diet hasto be consumed for the rest of theday. This regimen should be takenfor at least ten days. The livercleansing formula should be takenfor at least two weeks.

Milk thistle is a natural herbthat has been known to havestrengthening and healing powersover the liver. It is an antioxidantand can protect the liver fromradical damage. The herb is avail-able in tablet form and in major

natural foods stores. Milk thistlecan be consumed after performingthe liver flush.
