The Olympic Flame iscoming to NorthumberlandOn the 14th, 15th and 16th June 2012 theOlympic Torch Relay will be in Northumber-land on its journey from Greece towards theopening ceremony of the London 2012Olympic Games.

Hexham RacecourseThe county’s only racecourse is often described as themost picturesque in the country. Perched on YarridgeHeights high above the historic market town, theracecourse has been the home of National Hunt racing inNorthumberland for well over a century. The Queens Hall Arts Centre, Hexham The Queens Hall is a magnificent early Victorian buildingin the heart of Hexham. Fire and Ice - Travelling to the Edge of Things Sat May 12thHoly IslandMeet at the entrance of Lindisfarne Castle at 2pm for a 2hour walk of about 4 km. This walk explores how thislandscape formed from the ancient rocks which create thegrain of the landscape as well as looking at the elementswhich have sculpted the rocks to form the landscape wesee today.
Back to the Sea Sat June 9thBeadnellMeet at the beach exit to the main car park in Beadnell at2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. Beadnell is unique onthe east coast in having a harbour that faces west! Comeand find out the influence that the geology has had on thisas well as the relationship between Beadnell's ancienthistory and it's human heritage.
Ripples, Soft Centres and Tea Tues July 10th Howick to BoulmerMeet at the small car park by Sea Houses Farm nearHowick (GR NU 257174) at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about4 km. Come and find out what these patterns tell us aboutthe ancient past of this area and how these beautiful sandybays came into existence... and be reminded of thegreatest invention known to civilised gentle-folk!
Giant Plants in a Steamy Bog Sat Aug 11th South of SpittalMeet at the end of the promenade in Spittal at 2pm for a 2hour walk of about 4 km. Back in the good old days Spittalwas as hot and as balmy as a resort by the Indian Oceanwith vast rivers and massive swamps filled with giant treeferns as well as beautiful shallow clear blue tropical seasfilled with corals as well as other interesting beasts.
Farenheit 2012 Sun Sept 9thBamburghMeet by the cricket pitch at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about4 km. This walk looks at the rocks which underlie theCastle at Bamburgh which form part of the Whin Sill.Explore the evidence which points to the molten origins ofthese rocks. When were these rocks formed and how hotwere they when they arrived?

Druridge Bay Country Park On the coast justsouth of Amble, thepark is home to abeautiful sandybeach and dunesplus a lakesurrounded bywoods andmeadows. Thereare greatopportunities foroutdoor sports anda wide range ofwalks. Many pathsaround the lake aresuitable forwheelchairs andthere’s a play areaand a café in thevisitor centre. Bolam Lake Country ParkTwo miles north of Belsay, Bolam Lake is a jewel in thecrown ofNorthumberland,with historiclandscapes anddramatic views.Feed the swansand ducks fromone of the jetties,have a picnic bythe lake or walkthrough thepeaceful maturewoodlands. Manypaths areaccessible forwheelchairs, andfishing permits areavailable from theshop in Belsay.The visitor centrehas a great caféand shop. Open atweekends andschool holidays.

Plessey Woods Country Park Plessey Woods is a great day out for all the family, withpicturesque woodland, meadows and riverside. Theriverside walk along the River Blyth offers the opportunityto spot the elusive otter, kingfisher and red squirrel and agood network of paths makes Plessey a popular place forwalkers, cyclists and horse riders. The play area, visitorcentre and café are easily accessible for all ages andabilities.

Blyth and Seaton Sluice Links andForeshore Located between Blythand Seaton Sluice, the5km of bays, links andforeshore offer somethingfor everyone who wantsto visit the beautifulNorthumberland coast. The Olympic Flame iscoming to NorthumberlandWhy not combine your visit with taking in the breathtakingscenery and cultural delights which the County has to offer?
The Torch will enter the county from the north and make its waysouth towards Alnwick where it will stop overnight in the town.There will be a spectacular evening celebration event to markthe ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the Pastures,within the grounds of Alnwick Castle. The two hour event will bea celebration for the county. It will include Northumberlandthemed entertainment alongside spectacular touring showssupplied by the Torch Relay sponsors, Lloyds TSB, Samsungand Coca Cola.
Throughout the county, communities are planning fairs, festivalsand themed events to celebrate the passing of the flamethrough Northumberland.
