New Zealand Military Nursing, by Sherayl Kendall + David Corbett. Maungatapere School Roll of Honour Whangarei Roll of Honour NA 9/11/15 A fund has been started in Kawakawa to place tablet in the hospital to the memory of the late Nurse Hawken. Subscriptions are limited to a shilling. Referring to Nurse Hawken’s death the “Luminary” says, Miss Hawken who was matron of the Bay of Islands Hospital when the war broke out, was amongst the first to offer her services when it was known that nurses were required, and leave of absence being gained by the Hospital Board on the understanding that the position would remain open to her at the close of the war, she left by the hospital ship, “Maheno”. Several letters were received from her en voyage, but no intimation of her illness, and the news of her untimely end came therefore as a great shock to her very large circle of friends in the Bay of Islands. As hospital matron, Miss Hawken did excellent work, and won the respect and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. At the call of duty, she gave up a comfortable position when she was doing good work, feeling that she might be able to help in assisting the brave boys who were wounded at the battle front, and truly her life was given to the cause, even though she did not live long enough to give all the help sho so nobly set out to offer. 9/11/15 A vote of conlances was passed to the parents of the late Nurse Hawken who had just died at Alexandria Hospital, Nurse Hawken was formerly Matron of the Kawakawa Hospital 12/129 Pte HAYTER, Ernest s Church Hill, Waikato Main Body Auckland Infantry Batt James A Hayter BOI 31275 Pte HIKO, Jack Seaman 19th Rf Wellington Infantry Battalion Mrs M Hiko (m) Russell 29403 L/Cpl HEAPE, Ebenezer Farmer, Kerikeri V2 43/23 G K Heape (br) Locomotive Department, Ak Pte HEPATA, Rikihana Hau Kaikohe RSA 60821 L/Cpl HEPERI, Frederick Farmer 90/11 V 4 Joseph Heperi (f) Rangiahua Kaikohe RSA 19684 Pte HEPERI, Pita Wool Worker 18th Maori Rf Mrs Louisa Heperi (w) Waimate North 20623 Pte HEPERI, Richard Millhand V2 38/40 Joe Heperi (f) Waihou, Hokianga 81503 Pte HERBERT, Hudson Ray Butter Factory Hand 87/5 V 4 J N Herbert (f) Utakura Kaikohe RSA 22/381 Staff Nurse HERBERT, Margaret Emily Nurse V2 42/3 W H Herbert (f) Te Aroha
