Northeast IDENTITY THEFT AND FRAUD AWARENESS FORUM Special Agent Pat Casey of the United States Secret Service addresses the crowd during the Identity Theft and Fraud Awareness Forum. I dentity theft is a crime on the rise. An estimated 1 million Californians have been victims of identity theft, and nationwide over 24 million people have been victimized. The majority of those victims have been people over the age of 50. California has the third highest incidence of identity theft per capita, with 125 victims of ID theft per 100,000 people. Criminals have been using the mail, the Internet, and telemarketing scams to steal credit information. Some are increasingly turning to digging through our trash cans and raiding our mailboxes to obtain personal information. Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data can. Your Social Security number, your bank account, your credit card number, and other valuable identifying data, can all be used by others to personally profit at your expense. The best defense against this crime is knowl- edge. That is why I worked with the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce and the 20th Century Women’s Club to assemble a wonder- ful panel of experts to discuss ways to protect yourself from being the next victim. The Identity Theft and Fraud Awareness forum on May 2, 2007 included presentations and discussions from the U.S. Secret Service, LAPD’s Commercial Crimes Division-ID Theft Unit, the Northeast Division of LAPD, the L.A. City Attorney’s Office Identity Theft Unit, and the Identity Theft Resource Center. Please contact my Northeast District Office if you would like to obtain any of the literature from this forum. Hillside Cumulative Impact Forum I sponsored a community forum to discuss the issues, laws, and community concerns related to the cumulative impacts of hillside development, piecemeal development and related topics. The discussion examined the laws, and the ways in which the City of Los Angeles currently addresses these impacts, as well as suggestions for changes that will improve the processes and hillside protections. 15

NortheastIDENTITY THEFT AND FRAUD AWARENESS FORUM

Special Agent Pat Casey of the United States Secret Service addresses the crowd during the Identity Theft and Fraud Awareness Forum.

The best defense against this crime is knowl-edge. That is why I worked with the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce and the 20th Century Women’s Club to assemble a wonder-ful panel of experts to discuss ways to protect yourself from being the next victim.

Hillside Cumulative Impact Forum

I sponsored a community forum to discuss the issues, laws, and community

concerns related to the cumulative impacts of hillside development, piecemeal development and related topics.

The discussion examined the laws, and the ways in which the City of Los Angeles currently addresses these impacts, as well as suggestions for changes that will improve the processes and

hillside protections.

from low-income families and children with disabilities.

he youth in our community need job opportunities to prepare for future careers. Work experience does more than just provide our youth with spend-ing money—it familiarizes them with the marketplace, teaches them responsi-

bility and discipline, provides them with an important skill-set, and provides them with a positive outlet and direction to keep them on the right path.

That’s why I was proud to co-sponsor the Northeast Youth Job Fair, which connected small and large North-east businesses with local youth seeking work experi-ence. Together with City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Council President Eric Garcetti, the Glassell Park Improvement Association, and the First Chance Program, I helped offer our youth the opportunities they need to succeed in life.

By employing locally, the participating businesses have done the Northeast a great service. I am sure the youth they hire will do the same for them!
