This list is excerpted from the 2012 topDentists™list, a database which includes listings for more than125 dentists and specialists in the Jacksonville met-ropolitan area. The Jacksonville area list was basedon thousands of evaluations of dentists and profes-sionals by their peers. The complete database isavailable at www.usatopdentists.com.

Selection Process"If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which den-tist would you refer them to?"

This is the question we've asked thousands ofdentists to help us determine who the topDentistsshould be. Dentists and specialists are asked to takeinto consideration years of experience, continuing edu-cation, manner with patients, use of new techniquesand technologies and, of course, physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of den-tists listed online with the American DentalAssociation, as well as dentists listed online withtheir local dental societies, thus allowing virtuallyevery dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentistsare also given the opportunity to nominate otherdentists whom we have missed that they feel shouldbe included in our list. Respondents are asked to putaside any personal bias or political motivations and

to use only their knowledge of their peer's workwhen evaluating the other nominees.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate thepractitioners on their ballot whose work they arefamiliar with. Once the balloting is completed, thescores are compiled and then averaged. The numeri-cal average required for inclusion varies dependingon the average for all the nominees within the spe-cialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases aregiven a careful consideration by the editors. Votingcharacteristics and comments are taken into consid-eration while making decisions. Past awards a dentisthas received, status in various dental academies(Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy ofPeriodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decision.

Once the decisions have been finalized, theincluded dentists are checked against state dentalboards for disciplinary actions to make sure theyhave an active license and are in good standing withthe board. Then letters of congratulations are sent toall the listed dentists.

Of course, there are many fine dentists who arenot included in this representative list. It is intended asa sampling of the great body of talent in the field ofdentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclu-sion on our list is based on the subjective

judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is truethat the lists may at times disproportionately rewardvisibility or popularity, we remain confident that ourpolling methodology largely corrects for any biasesand that these lists continue to represent the mostreliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists availableanywhere.
