By Heather Bryant, Regional Field Specialist, Food and Agriculture If you drive by the Grafton County Complex these days you can see the first of ripening tomatoes growing in the high tunnel. The start of the tomato harvest is my favorite part of any growing sea- son. Our first harvest was July 24th, about a week earlier than I had initially anticipated! Our plan is to har- vest weekly until the end of the season sometime in September or October. Tomatoes ripening in the trial. The tomatoes are part of a research project so we count and weigh the harvest from each plant individually and take notes on fruit quality. Once that’s done the tomatoes are donated to local senior centers, nursing homes and food pantries. When I use the words research project people tend get an alarmed look on their faces and ask if the tomatoes are safe to eat. Yes, they are! We don’t do anything to them that you wouldn’t do in your own garden! Half the fun of working on an agricultural research project is taste testing the fruits of your labor. Specifically, we are researching the fertility requirements of high tunnel tomatoes using a combination of organic nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. A high tunnel is a lower technology green- house where the crops are generally grown in the ground rather than on benches. It is actually the second year of a five year study at our UNH Cooperative Extension High Tunnel Research and Education Facility housed at the County Complex. Our tunnel is one of three sites involved in the project. The other two sites are in Durham, NH and Monmouth, ME and the project is a collabo Story continues on page A3

Itwas early June, and the canopywaslush.Amid-morningbreeze cooled us and stirred theleaves.Birdswereallaroundus, but I could only tell that bytheirsongforIcouldntseethem.Throughthetrees,IlookedoutataviewofthePresidentialRangeandglimpsedthevalleybelowandsaw how high wed climbed.Herewewere,newtohiking,infatuatedwithit,andwhileonly two and a half hours fromourhomeinNewburyport,itseemedlikewewereinafor-eignland.Sweatrandownmyface, and I wiped it away with abandana,myheartwasbeatingrapidly.Thewatertastedlikesomething delivered from heav-en. In that moment of quietude,ofthewindandbirdsongbutnothing else, a sudden thrill ranthroughmyentirebeing.Weweredoingthis,andwewerehappy and utterly alive. ItwasthenandtherethatIknew that as quickly as we wereclimbingeachofthepeaks,Ididntwanttofinishthemtooquickly,forIwantedthatsum-mer to last forever. I wanted tocapture every trail, every moun-tain, each moment of reflectionfor all time. It was like I was ineighthgradeagainandinloveforthefirsttime.Couldlifetrulybethisgrand,Iwonderedas a child thinking of a redhead-edgirlandlaterasamandecadeslateronamountain-side. Itisnow2015andintheheatwearemorelimitedtohowmuchwecangetout.ButnowthatblessedAugustisherewell return over the next sever-al months to some easy to mod-eratehikes.ButIknowthatAtticus and I never will capturethatmagicthatfilledourlivesupinthebeginning.Flashesofdifferenttrailscometomind.Variousmomentsofinstanta-neoussurpriseandinspiration.Views too beautiful to compre-hend.Tositaloneonamoun-tainsidewhetherhiddenbythefoliageorrevealedbyarockyledgewasnewandbeyondcompare. Any oneof the people who live and votein an area.IfIknewthatmyconstituentswanted a healthy budget;AndifIknewthatmycon-stituents in my community con-tinuetodieduetothecurrentdrug epidemic;AndifIknewthatmycon-stituentswithmentalhealthissueswerenotreceivingthehelp they need;AndifIknewthatmanyotherprograms, important to my con-stituents, were not being fundeddue to a single person's opinionthatthebudgetpassedwasnotwhat that single person wantedand vetoed it;Then I would need to uphold mydutytomyconstituentsandoverridethebudgetvetoonSeptember 16th.ThebudgettheGovernorvetoed included a 75% increasein funding for prevention, treat-mentandrecoveryefforts,atotalof$42milliontofightthesubstanceabuseepidemicfac-ing New Hampshire.ThebudgettheGovernorvetoedalsoincludedfullfund-ingofthementalhealthsettle-ment and the necessary funds toexpandbedcapacityatNewHampshire Hospital.Because of the Governors veto,the state is in a holding patternonmanyimportantissuesthesubstanceabuseepidemicbeingone.Becauseofthis,Iquestion her commitment to thiscrisis.WeknowthatbackinAugust2014theGovernordeclaredastateofemergencybecause40peopleoverdosedonsyntheticcannabinoid(akaSpice).Alsoin2014therewere321drug-relateddeaths,97 from heroin overdoses alone.In 2015, by all accounts we areheadedonthesametrajectory.Whereisthesenseofurgency?Shouldntthisbeconsideredastate of emergency too?
