Thanksgiving Is…. Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude to God, our Creator and Provider, whose guidance and care go before us… and whose love is with us forever. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the changes, to remember that we, too, grow and change from one season of life to another. Thanksgiving is a time of changing seasons, when leaves turn golden in Autumn’s wake and apples are crisp in the first chill breezes of fall. Let us remember the true meaning of Thanksgiving. As we see the beauty of Autumn, let us acknowledge the many blessings which are ours… let us think of our families and friends.. and let us give thanks in our hearts. HAPPY THANKSGIVING,

FRIENDSHIP FUN AWARDS

Dear Callers, Cuers, and Dancers,

Well, I hate to sound like a broken record but I’m afraid

that may be the case. Here we are, nine months into this

Covid-19 pandemic which has put a huge damper on our

activity. I know we have all been hoping it would be on its

way out by now but seems that’s not the case at all. I

know there have been dances taking place here and

there but I have not called any myself.

The facilities where all my clubs dance remain closed un-

til at least after the first of the year. I’m disappointed that

this is the case but then again, I’m also glad that I am not

in the position to decide whether or not it’s safe to call a

dance or safe for people to dance. I don’t want that re-

sponsibility myself but I also know that everyone must

make that decision individually as to whether they feel

safe calling and feel it is safe for the dancers as well. Do I

want to be out there calling? Absolutely! Do I want to see

my dancers out there having fun? Of course I do! But on

the other hand, I would never want the health of anyone

jeopardized just for the sake of dancing.

I realize there are many of us on each end of the spec-

trum. Some are extremely fearful and then others have no

fear and believe if it happens, oh well, it was worth the

risk. There are many factors which can influence our deci-

sion and I am not one to judge anyone, regardless of their

decision. To each his own as they say. On one hand, I’m

glad to see people eager to call and dancers who are will-

ing to get out there because that means our activity is still

alive and kicking and folks are ready to get back at it. On

the other hand, with another increase in cases and hospi-

talizations right now, I don’t want to see cases start pop-

ping up within our square dance community because that

will set us back even further. I’m ready to kick Covid to

the curb once and for all so we can all be back together

again doing what we love!

Things are still far from normal but I hope and pray the

worst is behind us. Linda and I want to wish all of you a

healthy and Happy Thanksgiving! We still have so much

to be thankful for and I know how truly blessed I am to

have all of you in my life!

Five Reasons You Should Vote

1. Elections have consequences.

2. Not voting is giving up your

voice.

3. It’s your money.

4. Voting is an opportunity for

change.

Russ and Anne Nejdl

Secretary

Russ and Anne grew up in Chicago at opposite ends of the city. They attended Bradley

University in Peoria and met during Anne’s freshman year. They shared a mutual dislike

and mostly avoided each other during the next 2 years. During Anne’s junior year, her

roommate decided the couple was perfect for each other and managed to convince them

to go out on a date. That was 50 years ago. They now have been married 48 years and

have one son and two grandsons who live in Carrollton. Their daughter-in-law is the

founder and CEO of the non-profit Families to Freedom, which is involved in relocating

abuse victims to a safe environment. Their son is senior vice president of cyber security

at Bank of America. Pretty amazing since he majored in piano in college!

Russ was relocated to Texas in 1980 during that awful summer of continuous 100+ weather. He worked in IT and spent

the last 30 years of his career at Blue Cross of Texas before he retired. Russ has been an avid cyclist and was able to

fulfill his dream by riding his bicycle across the country from San Francisco to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He also

rode his bicycle in the Pyrenees in the France and Spain border. Anne worked as an RN mostly in hospitals. After re-

tirement, Anne was recruited to start Parish nursing at Prince of Peace Catholic Community. Thanks to a covenant with

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, Anne was able to secure speakers, free lab draws, health related classes

and free flu shots for the congregation. These programs continue today.

The Nejdls have been dancing for about 20 years. They took lessons after their Empty Nesters group from church intro-

duced them to square dancing during a monthly activity. Their host club is Swinging Stars where they have held the club

positions of President, First Vice President twice, and treasurer. They have chaired the club anniversary dance and

been NORTEX delegates several times.

Russ and Anne miss all of you and look forward to the time when we can all dance again.

NORTEX OFFICERS

Jeff Marlatt

Assistant Promenade Editor

Jeff was asked by a friend to try suare dance lessons. He was skeptical, as he had never

been very successful at other types of dancing, but agreed to give it a shot. That first at-

tempt went well, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. Jeff has been dancing regular-

ly with Pegasus Squares since 2014. He has served Pegasus Squares as Member-at-

Large, Vice President, and President. After his second term as President, he has continued

to serve as a club delegate to NORTEX. Jeff was recruited by Debbie Anderson to serve as

Assistant Promenade Editor. He currently has no interest in serving in any elected office,

but who knows what the future holds!

Jeff has had a varied career progression. Sparked by exposure to computers in the early 1970's by his high-school

physics teacher, Jeff obtained a degree in Systems Analysis, and worked in the IT field for nearly 30 years. After his last

position in that field was off-shored to India, Jeff revived a lifelong interest in books and libraries, working for the Dallas

Public Library in several positions, finally attaining a Masters in Library Science in 2012. When that achievement failed

to result in a full Librarian position, Jeff semi-retired, and has since been working in the print department at Office De-

pot. He is active in his church, where he has sung bass in the choir for over 29 years, playing bridge, spending time

with friends, entertaining, and traveling. Jeff has made friends from al over the country through square dancing and

plans to make more in the future.

Our days are identical suitcases—all the same size—but some people can

pack more into them than others.

Don and Mary Jo Henry

President Pro Tem, Area 1 Vice President

Don and Mary Jo met on a blind date in 1954. They dated through high school in

Pennsylvania. In 1958 after graduation, Don joined the Air Force. He was stationed

in San Antonio and after loads of letters and lots of money spent on phone calls,

they were married in 1960.

They spent two years in San Antonio. After Don’s service came to an end, they

moved to Dallas where Don attended and graduated from SMU. He went on to vari-

ous positions in the construction field and later to own his own company. Interna-

tional travel was the most exciting part of the job with work in Egypt, Panama, Guiana, and Chile.

Mary Jo worked as a medical assistant after graduation from high school in Pennsylvania and later in San Antonio and

then in Dallas. When their two sons began school, Mary Jo decided it was time to further her education and began clas-

ses at Richland College. She later transferred to SMU, graduated and went on to complete an MLA degree. She

taught American History for 32 years at Brookhaven College.

They began square dancing in 1994 when a friend asked if they wanted to take square dance lessons with the Texas

Reelers. They have been members of a number of clubs through the years including: Log Cabin Swingers, Plus 4’s,

and Texas Reelers. They are currently members of the Rebel Rousers and ADD Plus.

Don and Mary Jo’s involvement in NORTEX has been extensive. They were Round-Up General Chairman in 2001.

They have held various Round-Up Chairmanship positions over the past consecutive fifteen years.

In 2006, they were Assistant Program Chairman for the National Square and Round Dance Convention in San Antonio.

They were elected and served 4 years as NORTEX Area Vice President, 4 years as President Pro Tem, 4 years as

NORTEX Secretary, 2 years as NORTEX Delegates. They served 2 years as Chairman of Publicity and Demo. They

were awarded Couple of the Year in 2007 and in 2017 received the Marvin and Helen Matus Lifetime Achievement

Award.

They love to travel and have made trips to Hawaii, numerous cruises with family, trips to Ireland, Germany and Austria

with Jerry Story and Tony Oxendine, France, England and Scotland, and recently a fabulous trip to Australia for the Na-

tional Square Dance Convention in Perth with Dave Vieira. Two of their favorite, sometimes annual, destinations are

Ocean City, New Jersey and the small Dutch Island of Saba in the Caribbean.

PIONEERS—Seeing all the awards in the October Prom-

enade was exciting. We are so happy for our friends who

were recognized for the hard work they do to promote

square dancing.

It is difficult to stay positive after being quarantined for

months and months. Remember, “Life is like a camera;

just focus on what’s important, capture the good times,

develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out

just take another shot.”

We are looking forward to finding you in our “shot” very

soon. Meanwhile, stay safe and be blessed.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Audrey Mansell, President

GREETINGS FROM THE ROADRUNNERS! Wow! It’s already November – a time when we reflect on our blessings. Roadrunners wish everyone a month of fun, family and fellowship even as we are still being care-ful in this pandemic. We continue to make dancing decisions a month at a time. Roadrunners have attended more dances in Speegleville - near Waco, Aledo and Tool. We look for-ward to the time when we can all be together and dance like we used to. (If we can remember how!!) Roadrunners are having discussions about the yearly les-sons we usually have at Swingtime in January. When we make a decision about when to hold lessons – January or another time – we will let everyone know. Jet and Benny Sampilo have been working on our club directory and we look forward to seeing the end result. Also, our secretary, Carla Butler, keeps us up to date when members get a new address, phone number or email address. Several of our members and their families have had re-cent medical issues and we pray for their healing. Be sure and check emails, Facebook and our webpage for announcements and to see when and where dances are scheduled. Be sure and follow us on Facebook and see our webpage at: roadrunnersquares.club. Happy Thanksgiving! BEEP! BEEP! Greg & JoAnn Chambers Roadrunners Presidents

A Turkey Speaks

I have never understood why anyone would

roast the turkey and shuck the clams and

crisp the croutons and shell the peas and

candy the sweets and compote the cranber-

ries and bake the pies and clear the table

and wash the dishes and fall into bed when

they could sit back and enjoy a hamburger.

REBEL ROUSERS are enjoying the cool weather. While

we are being careful to distance ourselves and stay safe,

we are all trying to stay in contact with one another

through Facebook and emails. Due to the virus issues

continuing to be an issue, we are canceling all Rebel

Rousers dances for 2020. We will continue to monitor the

virus status for our area and once we feel it is at a safe

level to dance again, we will be dancing. We hope all of

our square dance friends stay safe and we look forward to

seeing you all once again on a dance floor.

FRANK PATRICK STARRETT

SWINGING STARSSTARS

On Thursday, October 1, 2020, Frank Patrick Starrett, loving husband, father of three children, en-

tered God’s eternal and loving embrace at age 80 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Frank was born in Camden, New Jersey to James and Marguerite Starrett. A veteran of the US Navy, he was a mechanically gifted person whose long career included working at Ford Motor Company, Continental Can Company, and Xerox. In 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Maryann Starrett. They raised two sons, Frank and Mark, and one daughter, Michelle. Life’s jour-neys brought them from New Jersey to Arlington, Texas, later to Yukon, Oklahoma, and finally to

Plano, Texas. Frank had a passion for working with his hands. He had an exceptional visual intelligence that, when combined with his mechanical aptitude, allowed him to pursue many hobbies which varied from building home additions to creating stained glass artwork. Frank was a loving and dedicated husband, and throughout his 61 years of marriage to Maryann he devoted much of his time to family gatherings and community outreach. He especially loved his ever-growing family, spending much of his free time visiting, vacationing, and leading an exemplary life as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. A lifelong practicing Catholic, Frank volunteered in many ministries and was a Eucharistic Minister and Coordinator at Prince of Peace Catholic Community. Frank joined his wife in leading and participating in the National Marriage Encounter, whose mission is to celebrate, enrich, and support marriages and families, at the regional level in both Texas and Oklahoma. He and Maryann were avid square dancers, and after retire-ment he trained and participated in the Citizens Assisting Plano Police (CAPP’s) program. Frank was preceded in death by his father, James, and his mother, Marguerite. He is survived by his wife, Maryann, his three children, Frank and his wife Judy, Mark and his wife Leesa, and Michelle and her husband, Kevin Anderson, five grandchildren, Kaitlin, Matthew, Lauren, Chris, and Brian, eight great grandchildren, his brother, James, and many ex-tended family members. A funeral mass was held on Friday, October 16th, 2020 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.teddickeywestfuneral.com for the Starrett family.

RAY DECKARD PHARR SWINGING STARS Deckard Pharr passed away on September 14, 2020, at the age of 94, leaving to mourn his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, of Nevada, Texas as well as his children, grandchildren and numerous nephews and a niece.

A funeral service was held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Faith Family Church. A Military Color Guard graveside service was held at the Nevada Cemetery.

YVONNE VARNER ROADRUNNERS

Yvonne Varner passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020. She was born on May 3, 1938.

Yvonne and her late husband, Dave, were lifetime members of Roadrunners and held several

offices. They were Treasurer for a long time before they stopped dancing. We will be praying

for her family as they go through this sad time and hope they are brought some peace in know-

ing she is reunited with Dave and no longer suffering.
