NORTH EAST WEEKLY After spending £150,000,000 on a luxury hotel for convicted criminals, £150,000 repairing the damage the criminals caused within weeks of entering their plush abode plus the hundreds of thousands it cost to relocate half the prisoners, the latest wheeze thought up by the Nats in Edinburgh is to spend £150,000 of public money to find out how big a laugh it is for prisoners living in the luxury holiday camp known as Grampian Prison. What is the likely out come of this £150,000 survey? The prisoners will obviously say they want more to remain happy, such as bigger flat screen TVs, more all weather football pitches, larger gyms, to have the under floor heating turned up, more visits so they can smuggle in greater volumes drugs and mobile phones, outside excursions to the bookies, a manicure and pedicure service, tanning beds, more food and of course liberal volumes of beer and spirits to wash it down. A huge public money survey such as this one will be acted upon by the Nats, so isn’t about time the Nats told the local community how much money they will continue to waste pandering to convicts. Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan said, when are the Nats going to stop squandering massive amounts of public money on criminals when the local community is crying out for assistance. For years I have been highlighting issues in Peterhead from schools to deprivation. Over the past few weeks reports have come before the Buchan Area Committee showing that 7 out of the 10 local primary schools have ‘major problems’ and once again the results being achieved by Peterhead Academy pupils are dire to say the least. Councillor Buchan continued, we badly need across the board investment in the town. If the money wasn’t available that would be one thing, yet, if one takes a look at what is actually taking place, there are huge amounts of funds available. Over the past few years £150,000,000 has been spent on a luxury prison, £33,500,000 on a quay which has failed to create a single new job and now £45,000,000 is about to be spent replacing a fish market that should never have been knocked down. If this public and community money had been in the hands of democratically elected Peterhead residents, the town would have been absolutely booming. For too long Peterhead has been run by those who don’t live here, the unelected and ‘serious and organised crime’.

5TH MARCH 2015 NORTH EAST WEEKLY 9 With lambing time approaching, vets from Scotland’s Rural Col-lege are reminding dog owners to keep their pets under close con-trol near livestock and to avoid going near sheep at all, if possi-ble. The vets say their role with SRUC means they see at first hand the devastation a normally friendly companion can cause to a flock. Many of SRUC’s vets work in the eight Veterinary Sur-veillance Centres around Scot-land where they investigate the causes of death in livestock or wildlife. Hannah Orr is one such Veterinary Investigation Officer working in Aberdeen. “We’re vets because we love animals,” she says. “We know how great dogs can be but we also examine the horrific injuries and see the stress they can inflict on ewes and lambs. The majority of owners are very responsible and would not knowingly allow their pets to distress or injure livestock. But you can never tell what might happen and it is best to take extra care at this time of year.” Hannah’s colleague Marion McMillan, a vet with SAC Con-sulting Veterinary Services office in Ayr is married to a sheep farm manager from Girvan and has her own personal story about what dogs can do. One day they found six lambs from a flock being fat-tened outside with head wounds so bad the lambs had to be put down. During the lambing season later that year eight young lambs were found with badly crushed heads, while several ewes had wounds suggesting they had tried to defend their young. “It was really shocking because it was very different from anything I had seen before,” she says. “We did try to treat some sheep from the first incident but eventually had to put them down. I know not every dog would behave like that one, but sheep are vulnerable when they are heavily in lamb even a dog thinking its ‘playing’ by chasing pregnant ewes can cause problems later.” Dog owners need to be vigilant and pay careful attention to any signs placed by farmers or land-owners beside footpaths and gates. If entering a field of sheep keep dogs on a short lead (two metres or less) or close at heel. Walk a good distance from the livestock. The same applies on more open moorland or hills with sheep or cattle about. The SRUC vets are appealing to dog lovers to consider the welfare of livestock as well as their own valued companions.

Police Scotland is appealing for

information following a road traffic

collision that took place at the Mur-

do's Roundabout, Aberdeen, on Tues-

day 17 February.

The incident happened at around

6:35am when a silver VW Polo,

travelling from Cairncry Road,

collided with a blue potential Ford car

near to the junction of North

Anderson Drive.

The cars stopped on North Anderson

Drive, but the driver of the blue car

left the scene without providing his

details. The damage to the VW Polo

was estimated at a low three figure

sum.

Anyone with information is asked to

contact Police Scotland on 101 or

you wish to remain anonymous.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is calling on every local authority in Scotland to help it continue to pro-tect children from unintentional home accidents. The family safety charity has written to all 32 councils in the country to ask them to include £1,000 in their budgets for the next financial year, to help it to continue its highly successful Scotland Home Safety Equip-ment Scheme (SHSES). The pilot of the scheme, which was launched in 2013, administered by RoSPA and supported by different organisations from across the country, reached 900 vulnerable families and 1,752 vulnerable children. Home visitors offered practical safety advice, and issued equipment such as cupboard catches, blind cord cleats and safety gates, to protect young children. A total of 165 practitioners were also trained in child safety.Since then, SHSES will now be rolled out to the Scottish Borders, where 100 vulnerable families will be reached.RoSPA now wants to build on this good work by offering a tele-phone and website service for enquiries, continuing to train practitioners, deliver presentations to key government and practitioners with a remit for child safety, and hold an annual event to share best practice. Christie Burnett, SHSES project officer, said: “We want to continue the momentum we have, but to do this we need help from local authorities so we have written to every chief executive and community planning officer across Scotland. Current funding runs out on March 31, so we would like a pledge of £1,000 in each budget.”
