The resignation of the Head Teacher of

Buchanhaven Primary School after a short time in

post comes as little surprise. It took a considerable

time to get a new Head for Buchanhaven as it did

to get a new Head for the Academy. The 3 North

Peterhead Schools each have significant problems

which have been deeply damaging the futures of

the children attending these schools.

Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan, said I have

every sympathy with the Head Teacher of

Buchanhaven School. She was a very well

qualified individual but was given an almost

impossible task. Aberdeenshire Council don’t

understand that they can’t continue to pile more

classrooms into the this extremely small site.

Currently there are 450 primary pupils and 80

nursery kids on the site. In the next four years it is

planned to increase to 500 pupils and 600 in the

next eight years plus 80 nursery kids. A similar

scenario is building for the Central School.

Cllr. Buchan continue, this is not only a numbers

issue. Central and Buchanhaven areas contain 10

of the 20 most deprived areas in Aberdeenshire,

while they also have a large migrant population

who don’t have English as a first language. At

Buchanhaven we effectively have a small

Academy which is developing to the size of a

medium Academy, this is on the site and having

the budget of a small Primary School.

Cllr. Buchan added, emerging problems in the

North of Peterhead have been explained at great

length for many years but they have not been

tackled. One of the key roles of a Councillor is to

speak up for those who can’t fight for themselves.

I am fighting all out for the futures of Peterhead

children but I have been deeply disappointed by

the Councillors who are supposed represent

Peterhead but don’t live in the town. I also say this

to parents and Parents Councils, there is a limited

and diminishing pot of money available for

schools, if we don’t have a united move to deal

with the current and growing problems, they will

have greater impact on the current and future

generations of local children.

INAUGURAL MEETING OF DYSLEXIA WORKING GROUP HELD The inaugural meeting of the Farming with Dyslexia Working Group, led by NFU Scotland, took place earlier this week.

Chaired by the Union’s Vice President Rob Livesey, the group was established to ensure that Scottish farming stakeholders

recognise the needs of dyslexic crofters and farmers in the most appropriate way.

Representatives from NFU Scotland, the Scottish Government’s Rural Payments Inspection Directorate, Forestry Commission

Scotland, Dyslexia Scotland and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) along with four farming and crofting members of NFU Scotland

who have dyslexia attended the meeting on Wednesday (3 September).

Steered by NFU Scotland, this group was borne from the recognition that dyslexia is a real, but often hidden, issue among the

farming community. With some 25 per cent of agriculture students at SRUC receiving support for dyslexia, it is believed this

heritable condition is more prevalent within the farming sector than previously thought. However, due to stigma and poor

understanding, it can remain undiagnosed and can be problematic for those dealing with communications, regulation and form-

filling within the agriculture industry.

The Union recently launched a campaign to raise awareness of dyslexia amongst the farming community, whilst engaging with the

Scottish Government, Dyslexia Scotland and SRUC to see how joint work can be undertaken to better recognise the issue and

support those affected.

NFU Scotland Vice President Rob Livesey commented: “Today’s meeting was a constructive one and a sound starting point for

those keen to recognise the impact of dyslexia within our industry and what action we can take to help their situation. I believe we

have a great bunch of people with vision and determination to make a difference. The contribution from those within the working

group will be crucial to the success of this initiative.

“It’s now clear to myself and others that there is no one size fits all approach to helping those with dyslexia working within Scottish

farming. However, there is a commitment to proactively help those that have or suspect they have dyslexia.

“As a group, our first objective is to continue to raise awareness and build on the work that we have started. The next task we have is

to attempt to remove the stigma attached to dyslexia. We strongly believe as a group that there is huge potential to tap into the talent

that dyslexic people in our industry have and help them recognise their own potential for the benefit of all.

“That ambition can be underpinned by engaging with all stakeholders to ensure the needs of those with dyslexia are taken into

account and that all communications and regulations are available in a format appropriate for those with dyslexia.

“As a result we will be embarking on a campaign in the next few months to address those stated aims.”

MarathonManUK, Rob Young, is at-

tempting to run 367 marathons in 365

days to raise money for dreams come

true and the NSPCC and is taking on

his next challenge in the Loch Ness

Marathon on Sunday 28 September.

Rob Young is a kilt-wearing runner on

a mission. He has one aim: to run at

least one marathon a day for a year and

complete at least 367 marathons in 365

days, while raising funds for his chosen

charities. This goal will see him run-

ning nearly 10,000 miles in the year,

which is almost the equivalent of a

flight from London Heathrow to Syd-

ney, Australia. The man now known as

MarathonManUK is impressively get-

ting through the miles around a full-

time job and life with a young family.

The 31 year old, former British Army

soldier from Richmond represented

Great Britain in Junior Biathlon and

Triathlon during his youth, but had nev-

er run a marathon before. While watch-

ing this year’s London Marathon, Rob

was moved by the emotional fundrais-

ing stories. His fiancée, Joanna bet him

that he couldn’t run a marathon. The

bet escalated to 50 consecutive mara-

thons, which Rob has since achieved

and he’s now attempting to run more

marathons than the current World Rec-

ord holder.

Rob is driven to help children’s

charities by his own very difficult

experiences of abuse as a child. Along

the way, Rob is aiming to raise

£100,000 for children’s charity Dreams

Come True, whose aim is to bring joy to terminally and seriously ill children and young people by fulfilling

their dreams, and the NSPCC,which helps to protect vulnerable children and prevent abuse through its projects

and services including ChildLine. Rob is asking everyone reading this to donate just £10 to really make every

Rob has a solid team of professionals behind him, including Dr Courtney Kipps, who is the medical director of

the London Triathlon, the Blenheim Triathlon and London’s Run To The Beat Half-marathon. Dr. Kipps is

also the assistant medical director of the London Marathon. Working with the Institute of Sport, Exercise and

Health (ISEH), Rob has become a person of scientific interest, undergoing tests to assess pain thresholds,

improvements in VO2 Max and other tests. He’ll be consistently monitored throughout his attempts by the

team there.

Rob has always wanted to complete a challenge of magnitude, but this is beyond what he had anticipated. Rob

said: “Pushing myself on a daily basis and raising money for charity is a dream come true for me. I had a

difficult childhood and do not want other children to have a similar experience to me. I have always wanted to

raise money to help children born into less fortunate situations. Along the way I am meeting the most

incredible people and am so proud to say that I’ve inspired people to start running and much more.”

Police Scotland is appealing for information following an assault that happened in the Footdee area of

Aberdeen on Sunday 31 August.

The assault is believed to have happened between 10:15pm and 10:30pm and the suspect is believed to have

been driving a small black car.

He is described as being aged between 35 and 50, balding, has a pock-marked complexion on the right side of

his face and was wearing mid-blue jeans and a blue and white horizontal stripped t-shire or polo shirt.

The female victim was not injured as a result of the assault but left shaken.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or

Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.

The Scottish chicken industry has been dealt another damaging blow as all four free range producers contracted to Hook 2 Sisters, the dominant processor in Scotland, have been terminated. This latest announcement follows the termination by Hook 2 Sisters of several growers’ contracts in November 2013, and a further four terminations in August 2014. As a result, the number of independent chicken producers in Scotland has fallen from 28 to 16 and the number of chickens produced in Scotland will fall by an estimated seven million birds per year. These three restructurings have not only devastated Scottish chicken production, but have put some 72 jobs in the rural North East of Scot-land at risk including farm workers, catchers and cleaners who all work on the affected farms. The loss of chicken production has also taken away a valuable and sizea-ble market for those providing the sector with feed, estimated at 35,000 tonnes. Without a significant turnaround in sourcing policy and the creation of new processing facilities in Scotland, the production of 1.3 million free range birds in Scotland will come to an end by the end of September. This will devastate growers, their suppliers and hauliers, and reduce the choices available to Scottish consumers. Coming just a few months after a major retailer made a commitment to sell a full range of Scottish chicken, this latest news appears to have tor-pedoed the ability of many retailers to sell free range Scottish chicken in their Scottish stores. The Union believes Aldi will be left as the only retailer sourcing Scottish free range chicken, thanks to a deal in June this year with three growers. That supply chain may come under threat as the parent stock of day old chicks sup-plying these farms is being discon-tinued. At present, organic chicken production in Scotland will continue. In the wake of the threatened ration-alisation in November 2013, the Scottish Government produced a poultry plan to maintain the critical mass of the sector and to develop infrastructure and markets to safeguard future production. Unfortunately, six months later, no significant investment has been made to create a sustainable chicken processing hub and the sector is star-ing into an abyss.
