Member Newsletter April 2017

Welcome to NERYC’s April Waterline. I hope that you

find this monthly newsletter informative on the goings

on in and around NERYC. As I mentioned in last couple

of issues, I am going to fill in for a bit until we can get

someone to volunteer to take over. (Please, any

takers?!?) So for the time being if you have any

interests, articles, notes, etc. to share with your fellow

members please send them to me throughout the month

of April and I will include them in the next issue.

A couple of dock / mooring updates. The deicers were pulled on Friday March 24th (thanks Steve!). The

moorings were put in today April 1st. Many thanks to my barge prep and mooring install crew members

for their work last weekend and today: Jerry Becker, Barry Lotter, Steve Young, Bob Brechter, Chris

Reno, Joe Reynolds, and our neighbor Gary Reid. Also thanks to Pem Walton who came this morning

with one of his sons to also work on the barge but unfortunately we had a full load and had to leave

them ashore. I owe you a beer and don’t worry, I’ll put you to work another time. Also the water on

the docks was turned on Saturday March 25th. The pump out has a broken pipe under the dock so I’ve

ordered parts and expect to have it back in operating order on Saturday April 15th.

Please enjoy your Waterline and don’t take anyone too seriously today, after all it is April fool’s day.

Also for those of you that are partaking in the Prime Rib dinner tonight, enjoy yourselves and send me

Hello NERYC Members,

Just a quick note from the Bridge. Spring is here! You can tell

because of the great e-mails from Dock Master Dave asking for help

setting the mooring balls, turning on the dock water and pulling the

deicers from the marina. There’s no surer sign that boating season is upon us for 2017.

Your BOG has been busy the past month with some of the more mundane aspects of running

the club. Some things you should all know that are going on include:

As you all may have heard, our long time club assistant administrator Linda had decided

to retire and will be leaving us at the end of April. While we will miss Linda we wish her

a great retirement. Administrator Phil DiPasquale has been looking for a replacement

for Linda and we have several candidates we are interviewing and hope to decide soon.

We have actively been evaluating the payment options available to us at the club and

the fees we are charged by credit card companies. Because of this we have been able to

negotiate lower rates for these services at a meaningful savings to the club. More will

follow and we hope to be able to offer more payment options to the membership in the

future.

Finance Chair Judy Herman initiated an annual audit of the club’s finances that was

supported by members Darlene Hamilin, John Sergeant, and Lynda DiPasquale. This

work continues and thanks to everyone for their hard work on this.

The loan refinance is proceeding, but not finalized. I expect this to be completed in

April. Once completed we will begin the process of evaluating the options to use some

of the proceeds for the benefit of the club and be looking for feedback from the

membership.

The Shakedown Cruise is scheduled for the April 29 to Havre de Grace. Make plans to

attend by boat or by car. Look for details from Fleet Captain Matt Sheldrick.

Good luck to everyone with their spring commissioning and see you on the water!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY IS BLOOMING! As March storms lead to the promise of more sunshine and warmer weather, we are always delighted to welcome new members to NERYC. All of them are looking forward to getting involved in our activities and many are making plans to get their boats in the water here at the club. Special thanks to so many volunteers that greeted guests during our February and March Open Houses. We have one more official Open House coming up April 22nd and April 23rd from 10 am to 3pm and I always appreciate extra hands. Street signs will be available in the lobby for distribution and getting them out ASAP always results in a stronger Open House turnout. Grab a couple on your way out of the club over the next weekend and post them on your way home. If you can greet visitors April 22nd or April 23d for a few hours, please email me at [email protected]. Chef Ernie has promised volunteers and visitors some delicious treats. The restaurant and bar will open earlier Saturday – 3pm rather than the usual 4pm. 2017 Cruises

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who responded to the cruise survey. There were over 40 responses. This gave me

great feedback for this year’s NERYC cruise destinations and I went with the majority opinion for each cruise.

There are a few changes from recent years: There was an overwhelming interest in a 4 day cruise to St Michaels. In

addition 60% of respondents voted for Annapolis on Memorial Day weekend. Accordingly both of these have been

included on our cruise schedule.

There is additional detail on the next couple of pages that gives you the cruise dates, destinations and some detail about

the marinas, rates etc.

We have some really great destinations planned. If you are planning on coming to the Memorial Day Cruise to Annapolis

and /or the July cruise to St Michaels, I strongly recommend you book your slip now, as these are popular events and the

slips go quickly.

You will see there are 2 raft ups planned this year; this is to try and balance out the slip costs for Annapolis and the longer

cruise to St Michaels/Rock Hall.

If you are new to NERYC, the Chesapeake or Cruising and would like to partner up with another boat for any of the

cruises just let me know and I will find you a “buddy boat’. New Members and First Time NERYC cruisers please give me

a call 610 644 4991 or see me at the club and I will be happy to answer any questions about the cruises and make sure

you feel welcome.

Thanks

March came in like a lamb, a lamb chop that is, with some great fun at the

California Wine night. Chef Ernie, Chrissy and Jeff put on a great menu with

paired wines from California. Next up, was a little taste of the Irish with some

traditional corn beef, potatoes and cabbage on St. Patty’s Day. Of course,

Birthday Night rocked to our friends of the Mike Owens band. End of March gave

us one more taste of winter with a good old Nor’easter, with snow, ice and wind.

OPEN HOUSE We have one more Open Houses coming up in April. The ones we held in February and March were both great successes resulting in several new memberships and slip rentals. Let’s keep the momentum going and be sure to tell your friends and family about NERYC, this is the perfect opportunity for them to come and learn about your club. Volunteers are always welcome at the open house event to greet and meet prospective members and to offer tours of our great facility and docks.

There are a number of NERYC members who are "movers and shakers" in the Women's Civic League and the below event is being held at the NERYC at the end of April.

What's a Quarter Auction? Attendees will bid on items donated by local businesses, Civic League members, restaurants, sports teams and local points of interest such as Museums and Gardens. The event is a mix between an auction and a raffle. Folks are advised how much they need to bid for each item - this can be as low as a quarter or as high as a dollar - with no obligation to bid on any items. A random number is then drawn in a raffle, with the person who has that number winning the item, but only if they actually bid on the item. If they did not bid, another number is drawn until there is a winner who had actually bid on the item.

All proceeds will be returned to the North East community through support of the North East Public Library, the North East Elementary School, and the Upper Bay Museum.

NERYC Jr Sail Program 2nd Annual BINGO Fundraiser - Friday May 12th.....You heard how fun it was last year, this

year we upped our game!

The Jr Sail program is again hosting a family BINGO fundraiser on Friday, May 12. This year's BINGO night has

been paired with the May Birthday night, and we invite everyone to join us for a fast paced evening featuring

20 rounds of Bingo fun followed by music and dancing. This evening can be enjoyed by both the young and the

young at heart so gather your friends and be there. The BOG, and the slip holders on each pier, as well as the

moorings holders, have stepped up and each grouping has donated an awesome prize basket. Our organizers

have also been working hard collecting great prizes, and together with a raffle, silent auction, and 50/50 draw,

make this a not to be missed event. MC Mark will keep the balls rolling and Chef Ernie is providing a special

"Bingo Buffet" in addition to the regular Burgee menu.

The goal of this year's fundraising event is to upgrade the Jr. Sail Program's safety and support boats. The

Learn to Sail Camp and the Junior Race program both continue to grow in scope and size - our safety

equipment now needs to catch up! Support the program by buying tickets to the event ($20 for 20 Bingo

rounds!) and bringing your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues to fill up a table of 10! We are hoping to

double our Bingo audience this year! This event is open to the public so please also promote it in your own

circles and networks.

If you can't make it on the 12th, you can still support the Junior program by making a contribution to the

fundraising goal. Checks made out to NERYC and marked "Bingo Fundraiser" can be mailed to the club.

Donations of suitable prize, raffle, and silent auction items are also welcome. The Jr Sailing team thanks them

for their generosity and support.

Doors open at 6, Bingo will start promptly at 7 pm and wrap up by 9 pm.

Hope to see on the 12th for fun and games and good times!

Thank you

Mary Schorse

Isobutanol Comes to the Chesapeake!

Better for your boat. Better for the environment.

In an effort to find relief from the challenges to fuel containing Ethanol, MTAM has been working to substitute

Isobutanol for Ethanol in Maryland. This required MTAM to send a formal request for an exemption to the

regulation that had prevented the splash blending of Isobutanol with fuel. The request was GRANTED! For

the near future, this fuel will be available only to on-water fuel facilities, which we are hoping will give an

advantage this boating season.

IF YOU SELL FUEL, ask your provider about using Isobutanol this season!

We thank GEVO a manufacturer of Isobutanol for their work on this and our thanks to Delegate Herb McMillan

(AACounty) for his leadership.

FOR THE BOATER:

Isobutanol is compatible with small engines and solves the concerns that many boaters have with ethanol

blended gasoline. Here are the advantages of Marine Fuel with Isobutanol:

Advantages of Marine Fuel with Isobutanol:

30% higher energy content than ethanol Elimination of phase separation issues Reduced emissions and increased octane No water solubility issues Made from renewable resources

Tested and proven by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) in collaboration with the

Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory, isobutanol is fully compatible with marine products

and other small engines. Performance validated with Mercury, Evinrude, Johnson, Sea Doo, Volvo Penta,

Honda, Yamaha, and Indmar. The manfacturers acknowledge the advantages over ethanol.

FOR MARINAS THAT WISH TO OFFER ISOBUTANOL:

Isobutanol has UL approval for use in fuel pumps and dispensers. It is compatible with the standard materials

of construction that are used for storage and dispensing of ethanol blends as well as clear gasoline so if you

have a UL approved pump and dispenser, Isobutanol will have no issues. For good order's sake it is always

good practice to inspect equipment, piping, and tanks for leaks so prior to switching to an Isobutanol blend, do

a good inspection of your system.

Although an internal combustion engine will have no problems running with mixtures of E10 and i12.5 as

demonstrated by NMMA testing, the EPA has not yet approved comingling of E10 and i12.5 in storage tanks or

dispensers. So prior to loading storage tanks with i12.5, the tank should be emptied to the lowest level

possible.

Labeling of the dispenser is very similar to requirements for E10, Gevo will provide labels required by the

Weights and Measures Department of the State of operation of the retailer or marina.

Dock Master Shed Roof Leaking

It looks like there are few shingles on the restaurant shed missing which may be contributing to the DM shed leaking. This will need to be repaired before the roof rots. Mike Wager and I are discussing building a small shed addition to the left of the dock shed to hold sails so maybe that roof work can correspond with the DM shed roof repair

Dumpster Gate Repairs

The posts that supports the left gate is sheared off. The gate and fence on the left side of this entrance need to be removed and the concrete in which the old post goes needs to be broken out with a sledge hammer of electric jack hammer. New post needs to be set and fence and gate reinstalled.
