How can I get college credit while in high school?

Page 20: NORTH ATLANTA HIGH SCHOOL 9 TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT Monday, September 21, 2015 6:00 – 7:30 p.m

• All AP/IB DP courses undergo a rigorous audit by the College Board or the International Baccalaureate Program to ensure that each course complies with standards agreed upon.

• As a fail-safe, AP/IB DP students are encouraged to take a standardized test at the end of the academic year so there can be no question as to the quality of coursework and student performance.

• Because all AP/IB DP courses are accountable to the same expectations, college admission counselors can be relatively confident in the quality of instruction.

Do colleges prefer AP/IB DP over Dual Enrollment college classes?

Page 21: NORTH ATLANTA HIGH SCHOOL 9 TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT Monday, September 21, 2015 6:00 – 7:30 p.m

• With college dual enrollment courses, however, admissions professionals are left to make educated guesses about the rigor and quality of specific programs with limited knowledge of the course material and no standardized exam.

• This might not present as troublesome a problem regionally, but schools receiving applications from across the country can’t afford to individually investigate every dual enrollment course they come across.

• Carefully weigh when choosing between taking a course as AP/IB DP or Dual Enrollment college course.

Do colleges prefer AP/IB DP over Dual Enrollment college classes?

Advanced Placement ®: The Basicshttp://www.collegeboard.org/

• AP® courses are college-level courses offered in high school.

• Courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses

• Students take AP Exams at the end of the course, measuring their mastery of college-level work

• A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam can typically earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college

Page 23: NORTH ATLANTA HIGH SCHOOL 9 TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT Monday, September 21, 2015 6:00 – 7:30 p.m

Why Take AP® Courses

Page 24: NORTH ATLANTA HIGH SCHOOL 9 TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT Monday, September 21, 2015 6:00 – 7:30 p.m

Advantages of AP® Courses

• Rigorous coursework prepares students for college level courses

• Students can choose which courses to take (typically student’s strengths)

• Possible College Credit (dependent on exam results and university decision)

• Time management skills must exist, but students have more flexibility with time
