FROM THE PASTOR :

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pope Benedict’s Intentions for the month of February are for the Family: that all may respect the family and recognize its unmatched contribution to the advancement of society;

Those Suffering from Disease: that the Christian communities may witness to the presence of Christ in serving those who suffer from disease in those mission territories where the fight against disease is most urgent. Let us join our Holy Father in these important intentions.

This weekend we are celebrating the commitment of those in the Consecrated Religious Life. We remember in our prayers Sister Kathleen Foster, an Ursuline Sister who teaches in our Third Grade. We also fondly remember Sister Ann Patrick an aide in our school who passed away last year. Let us also remember in prayer our two seminarians: Br. Daniel Bowen who is with the Mercedarian Order and Matthew Weaver who is with the Institute of Christ the King.

Thank you very much for your generosity in the second collection this past week. Your kindness brought us $2,539 closer to the $7,200 bill for the pump and installation. We thank you for your generosity this week as well.

This past week’s Gospel presented us with a beautiful meditation on the Beatitudes. Might I suggest a book for your spiritual read-ing concerning the Beatitudes? Please consider: The Pursuit of Happiness God’s Way: Living the Beatitudes by Father Servais Pinckaers, O.P. It can be ordered through Alba House at www.alba-house.org

May God’s blessings be yours this week. Father Ireland

In 1997, John Paul II called for consecrated life to be promoted throughout the universal Church.

He declared February 2, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, to be observed as World Day for Consecrated Life (WDCL). In the United States, when February 2 is not on a Sunday, we cele-brate on the Sunday after the Presentation. This year WDCL is observed on February 6, the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Thus, this Sunday we recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The consecrated life is one way that women and men live out their baptismal commit-ment as followers of Jesus. The Church invites us all to reflect on the role of Consecrated Life within the Christian community.

We ask God’s blessings on those from our community who have dedicated their lives to serving the Church: for Sister Kathleen Foster, O.S.U, who teaches third grade in our day school, and for our two seminarians: Brother Daniel Bowen and Matthew Weaver.

“Those who become followers of Jesus through the consecrated life bless the Church.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION . . .

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

When the 2002 World Youth Day in Toronto concluded, the lead organizer, Fr. Tom Rosica, CSB, embarked on a new endeavor with the encouragement of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. He, and some of the young adults who were crucial to the success of World Youth Day, began a Catholic television network in Canada.

In July 2003, Salt + Light Television began broadcasting as a digital cable channel. Already a multi-year winner (2008 and 2009) of the Gabriel award for best television station of the year from the Catholic Academy of Communication Arts Professionals, Salt + Light Television has become a producer of solid Catholic programming that is recognized around the world. You can view their shows online at www.saltandlighttv.org.

The television station takes its name, of course, from the section of Mat-thew's Gospel that we hear today. Last week's Gospel of the Eight Beatitudes was just the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. We'll be reading from that part of Matthew's Gospel all the way up until Lent, and this week's Gospel follows immedi-ately upon the beatitudes. It is important to have those in mind as we think about salt and light, both in the Gospel, and the television station as well.

As was mentioned last week, the beatitudes are the positive law for Chris-tians. Rather than prohibitions against certain activity, the beatitudes are the way we are supposed to act. In performing the Eight Beatitudes, we become salt of the earth and light to the world. That's why Jesus could say let people see your good deeds. In the shows it produces, Salt + Light Television tells the stories of Chris-tians living their lives in the light of Christ, doing good deeds and acting out of love. Living in that way is not always easy, as the shows reveal. But the station is true to its name, showing that Christians can be a light in this world. ©2010 Liturgical Publications Inc

L ITURGICAL ROLES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12 & 13, 2011

SANCTUARY GROUP #1 ~ A IDA K INCZEL

February … the shortest month of the year!! Can spring be far behind? February is considered the month of lovers because of Valentine’s Day. Maybe this is a good month to begin or continue to show love not only to those who love you, like God, but also to all those who are in need of your love … a spouse, a child, a par-ent, a friend. Remember that Confucius once said that harmony in the home will bring harmony to the nation.

Our homes, parish and community need us to show our love … that warm, fuzzy feeling that can bring joy to so many. Nothing diffuses anger more than an embrace, a smile, an e-mail or a phone call. Share your hospitality and joy of life. Even in the darkest times joy can be found, for joy is knowing that God loves you and will reward you for faithfully loving Him. Recently I was at a funeral home service for a young girl who died in her sleep. Not one mention of Jesus or God was made during the service. It depressed me, yet I knew that Christ would come to be at her side.

Recently I accompanied a wonderful group of people who were traveling to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life. If ever you have the chance to do it at least once in your lifetime, you must. I was so moved by the 100’s of thousands present from all over our country who joined in one voice to stop the killing of innocent chil-dren. I wish to thank Father Ireland for his leadership, and the wonderful staff and students of the Lyceum, and students from our day school and PSR program who made the trip such a joy. I also wish to thank Barb Latini for her leadership in our own Respect Life Commission, and especially Rita Krebs who organ-ized the trip, rented the bus and made all the room arrangements this year. Thank you to our Knights of Columbus, the Schulte & Mahon-Murphy and DeJohn Flynn-Mylott Funeral Homes and the Western Reserve Right to Life Organization for their generous contributions that helped us pay for the chartered bus. Last, but not least, thank you to all of you who purchased Krispy Kreme donuts or made cash donations to help us fund this wonderful experience.

SCHOOL NEWS . . .

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS . . .

Thank you for your prayers.

Our Open House and Catholic Schools Week went well. Many families toured our school last Sunday, and many positive com-ments were made. The PTC, Mr. Rick Majikas and our wonderful faculty did a tremendous job before and during the Open House. My appreciation, too, to Dan Debick and the maintenance crew for their work beautifying the school. Great job by all!! Our band concert and religious talent show were both entertaining and well received. Please continue to pray for us throughout the school year and share our new name and our quality Catholic education to prospective new families. We have open registration for new students, so spread the word. Thank You.

Our February focus will be Sacramental in nature. Students of Grade 2 are still preparing for their First Holy Communion. Their parents will be attending a meeting to prepare themselves, too. Later this month, students of Grade 8 will attend a Confirmation Retreat day to prepare for their Confirmation in May. Please keep these two grades, and all our students, in your prayers.

Look for a school concert with grades 1,3,5, & 6, which is now tentatively scheduled for February 24. More details forthcoming.

God Bless you. Have a wonderful start to February. Plan ahead for Valentine’s Day!! Remember these important February dates:

February 1 Re-registration for current families began; open registration for NEW families began February 6 World Day for Consecrated Life

Sincerely Yours In Christ, William DiBacco, Principal

FESTIVAL 2011 . . .

With this break in the wintery blast our thoughts turn to picking up the pace in our planning for this year’s Festival (July 14, 15, 16 and 17). We welcome your ideas for improvements and/or additions or suggestions you might have. Of course, we would welcome any newcomers to the “workforce”.

To that end, please plan to attend a planning meeting on Tuesday, February 15, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of the school. All current and prospective booth captains are expected to attend.

RESPECT L IFE SPEAKERS AT GESU :

The Catholic Church is strongly opposed to use of stem cells that are harvested from human embryos, for this practice violates human life. However, the Church does support adult stem cell research (stem cells derived from adult tissues which function to repair the tissues in which they are found). Also, research involv-ing the preservation of newborn cord blood stem cells, in which there is no harm done to human life, is also encouraged.

Dr. Andrew Trew, who teaches Bioethics at John Carroll Univer-sity and St. Mary’s Seminary, along with Mr. Edward Cup, Executive Vice-President of Stembane, Inc., will be the featured speakers in this significant presentation of the ethical uses of stem cells.

Please consider joining others interested in this fascinating research on Tuesday, February 8, in the Marian Chapel of Gesu Church at 7 p.m. for “Stem Cell Researach: The Promises and the Pitfalls.” Call Debbie Bruening (216.767.1273) for more info.

WOMEN ’S GUILD . . .

You are invited to attend the next business meeting of the Women’s Guild on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Saint Gregory the Great Meeting Room in the basement of the rectory. Also, keep Sunday, February 20, open for their next Communion Sunday at the 10 a.m. Mass. Please join the ladies in the front of the church.

FYI: The church mouse tells us that planning is underway for the annual Spring Luncheon & Fashion Show to be held this year on Saturday, April 9. Mark your calendars.
