Judy Carter’s Mess-2-Success Story

Judy Carter is a TEDx speaker, humorist, and speaking coach. Her message of using story and

comedy techniques as a business leadership tool, as well as a way to decrease cubicle stress makes

Carter an international, in-demand speaker where her keynotes entertain and inspire.

Judy Carter was born knowing the messes in her life were great comedy material. Her older sister

Marsha, who was born with cerebral palsy and was quadriplegic, was her first audience - a captive one.

It became Judy’s mission to make her laugh. There was just one problem: Judy had a severe speech

impediment. However, Judy was eventually able to find power in humor and went on to have a

successful career as a headlining standup comic sharing the stage with Billy Crystal, Lily Tomlin, and

was nominated for Atlantic City Entertainer of the year.

As an author, Judy doesn’t like to brag, but she did write the Bible. No joke, she’s the author of

The Comedy Bible which was featured on “Good Morning America,” CNN, and “The Oprah Winfrey

Show” where Oprah recommended the book to anyone who wants to be funnier.

Judy currently teaches people the power of their personal story in business, how humor

techniques can help decrease stress, and how to turn problems into punch-lines.

Education & Academic Degrees What degrees do you have? Did you go to an impressive college? A trade school? Any letters after your name? PhD? MD? Any certificate programs? Master classes with an artist? Any fellowship programs, residency abroad, language courses, an apprenticeship? Again, think about non-traditional education such as culinary training, circus school, or receiving a black belt in Karate.

HOMEWORK When you meet someone new tonight (a waitress, valet, hooker), find something to say to them that shows that you understand a detail of what their life is like. For instance, today as I paid my parking in an underground parking lot, I said to the attendant, “It must be hard for you to get a tan!” I got a laugh – and the attendant felt “seen” – as opposed to being treated as almost invisible. I said to the counter person working at Baskin Robbins, “Is your right hand more muscular than the left because that's the one you scoop with?” She smiles – and we make a connection. To my dentist, I say, “It must be hard having a job where you cause so much pain...” And we connect. Make an effort to understand – and care about – the problems of the audiences of your

life – and then be prepared for amazing results.
