PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear PVI Families,

Happy New Year PVI Families! It was wonderful to have our students back and excited to learn and grow after their Winter Break. As always, we are happy to share some highlights from the month of January, as well as many of the wonderful upcoming events in February. Upon return from break, our students participated in the STAR assessment for both English Language Arts and Mathematics. By administering three times per year, it allows teachers, students, and families the opportunity to see academic growth. Additionally, students conference with their teachers and continue goal setting. As always, we encourage our students to do their absolute best…we believe in you!

We thank the PVI PTO for hosting the Fifth Grade Dance; students had a wonderful evening. The PTO will be sponsoring a flower sale during the month of February, in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

A wonderful tradition at Pleasant Valley Intermediate is our annual participation in the Russell C. Hughes Spelling Bee. Students qualified from each homeroom for the first oral round of the Spelling Bee and will continue competition. We congratulate all of our students and look forward to the coming rounds, as well as the final round in March. A special thanks to Ms. McMaster and Ms. Schuler for all of their hard work and dedication in making the Spelling Bee a huge success and wonderful academic event.

The week of February 3th – 7th is National School Counseling Week. PVI would like to thank Ms. Below, Ms. Moore, Ms. Romanisko and Mrs. Semeraro for all of their hard work and dedication to our students and school. We have four top notch school counselors who make a tremendous impact on our school and help students achieve school success. Thank you for all you do; you are appreciated more than words can express!

Just a friendly reminder, we may receive enough snow in February to dismiss early, delay, or to close schools (hopefully this will not be too often). Please make sure that you listen to the news or consult any of the media listed on the district website or in this flyer.

Yours in Education,

Todd Breiner Kendal Askins Tom Dudley

THE GOLDEN RULE

Treat others the way that you want to be treated. That is The Golden Rule. Following

The Golden Rule involves recognizing that we are all different, and accepting and celebrating

those differences. We strive to help students see that everyone has something special to bring

to the table.

There are many opportunities in the school setting for students to practice respect for others.

When working in groups within the classroom, students need to be open to different

perspectives and ideas. Playing games during physical education class may require some

patience with those that are not as athletic or as competitive. Every day, in so many situations,

we encounter people that are different than us. It is important to respect that diversity and find

the value in it. Everyone says that the world would be a boring place if we were all the same!

How can you help your child at home to value diversity? Emphasize The Golden Rule at home as

well. Be a role model for your child by setting a good example in regards to the way you speak

about those that are different from yourself. Maintain open and honest communication so that

your child feels comfortable asking any questions he/she may have about differences. Keep in

mind that children are impacted by media coverage and stories. They hear bits and pieces of

adult conversations that they may not fully understand. They get information, sometimes

misinformation, from their peers or the internet. Help guide them through their understanding

of all that information. Help your child to build their own self-esteem. When children value and

respect themselves, they are more able to value and respect others.

Working together as home and school, we can help students to embrace the diversity in their

lives and benefit from the beauty and strength that it provides.

National School Counseling Week 2020 is to focus public attention

on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within

U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored

by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can

have in helping students achieve school success.

We are beyond lucky to have four of the finest School Counselors

here at PVI. We thank Ms. Below, Ms. Semeraro (formerly

Klamerus), Ms. Moore and Ms. Romanisko for all their hard work

and dedication to our students and school. They are truly

appreciated and we are thankful to each of them!
