Versatile teacher loves processLGAAProfile

“I graduated LocustGrove High School, andI’m still walking the schoolhalls and teaching little Pi-rates the same way mymentors taught me, “ saidTara Bennett, physical edu-cation teacher at the UpperElementary and EarlyLearning Center.

The daughter of William,Jr., and Connie Glass, mother of Braden andJacob Bennett, and fiancéeof Joseph Yoder has taughtat LG for 21 years.

Though she currentlyteaches physical education, she has taught languagearts, science, and socialstudies.

“I love my profession. Ilove the hugs I get every-day. I love the expressionon a student’s face the mo-ment they learn a conceptthey’ve been strugglingwith. I love their innocence, their humor, and their hon-esty,” Bennett said.

“I love my peers andtheir creativity and seeingtheir love for their students

overflow. It’s like we’re insome awesome Peter Panclub where we really neverhave to grow up becauseour students help to keepus young. I mean whatother job offers a pajamaday or super hero day?”

In her profession thereare struggles too.

“My biggest challenge inthe teaching profession isprobably the frustration Ihave with our state depart-ment and all the cuts theyare making to public edu-cation.

“Programs are being cut, classroom sizes are grow-ing, and we don’t have thenecessary, up-to-dateequipment needed,”Bennett said.

As a career teacher, sheworks to instruct in cre-ative ways.

“Teaching is an art.

When I’m teaching a rowdygroup of four-year-oldsabout personal space,” shesaid, “I’ve got to first hookthem so I can get their at-tention.

“I’ve got to make theconcept that I want them tolearn pleasing so they wantmore. I try to evoke theiremotions so I can get themto focus on the task beingtaught,” Bennett said.

“My personal space les-son starts with an imaginarypiece of bubble gum in ourpocket. We pull it out. Weunwrap it, we throw awaythe wrapper and pop it in

our mouth.“We’ll act silly and try to

blow an imaginary giganticbubble. We get it bigenough so we can hop in-side. With our arms outwide, we skip, hop, gallop, run in our designated playarea trying our best not toburst our bubble or anyoneelse’s by bumping intothem,” Bennett said.

“After a few minutes wehave a seat to review ournew term, personal space. Of course I’ll have to re-mind them time and timeagain about our personalspace bubble, but we’vemade an abstract conceptmore concrete in a funway,” she said.

Bennett believes it’s im-portant to promote artisticendeavors to students andadults.

“You can communicatehow you feel through artwhen sometimes you can’tutter the words. I am al-ways impressed with thestudent creativity. In our

Locust Grove is homeand a comforting place for

Bennett.“I love knowing that I’ve
