LEPHALALE – The 83 Zimbabweans who are living at the Disaster Management Cen-tre after an alleged labour dispute with a farmer are still awaiting answers to what is to become of them.

The migrant workers reported to Villa Nora police station in early December after they claimed that their employer, a farmer in the Marken area, disconnected the electricity and water supply to the housing where they were staying. They have been locked in a labour dispute with the farmer since Septem-ber, claiming that the farmer refused to pay them minimum wage.

On 11 December, the group, consisting of men, women and small children, were taken to the Lephalale municipality. They were placed at the Disaster Management Centre in Onverwacht and various businesses and pri-vate individuals provided them with food.

On 27 December the group was seen camping in a park outside the police station in Herman street. At that time it was alleged that they moved because they heard a gun-shot early one morning and, fearing for their lives, they moved closer to the police station. It is also alleged that residents in the area were unhappy with their presence causing the group to move away from the park. They later returned to the Disaster Management Centre, where they are now staying.

While various Zimbabwean newspapers have reported on the situation, the Lephalale municipality has remained tight lipped about

the future of these workers.Northern News have received informa-

tion that a task team has been established to address the issue. The team consists of the Lephalale municipality Disaster Team, South African Police Service, Home Affairs, District Disaster Team, Provincial Disaster Team, Department of Labour, National Prosecuting Authority, Department of Justice and the Department of Health.

In the meantime the workers are housed in temporary refugee tents and have to make use of a make-shift bathroom and an open piece of bush near the camp for their ablu-tions.

According to one of the workers they are receiving food from the non-profit organiza-tion, Gift of the Givers. “We only receive scones and tea twice a day,” said the person.

When Northern News visited the camp we were informed that the workers do not want to speak to South African media be-cause of an alleged hidden political agenda. “Our bosses have instructed us not to speak to anybody about our situation without get-ting permission from them first,” said one of the men. It is unclear who the bosses are that the man referred to.

At the time of going to print the Lephalale municipality did not respond to questions re-garding who is responsible for their living ex-penses as they are, by their own admission, undocumented workers who are not legally allowed to work in the country. The munici-pality also refused to respond on whether the group will be deported to Zimbabwe.

MOGALAKWENA - Democratic Alliance (DA) members of Parliament; Beyers Smit and Desiree van der Walt donated bottled water to Kolobe Ramasobana High School and Bokwidi Primary School in Bokwidi Vil-lage in Mogalakwena on Tuesday.

This was during a school readiness over-sight visit. This village, according to the DA’s press release, is one of many villages in Mo-galakwena plagued by water shortages and these schools are at the far end of the village, thus last to receive water supplied by the reservoir. “Residents here hardly ever get any water as the water supplied is not sufficient for the existing households,” said Smit.

During the DA’s visit, the learners from Kolobe Ramasobana High School were sent home to eat lunch as the school could not cook for them in line with the school nutri-tion programme due to a lack of water .

The DA will engage the MEC for basic

Much-needed water donated to schoolseducation and the department for urgent intervention in this regard, as well as the Mogalakwena Local Municipality to supply the school with water regularly,” the DA con-cluded.

River claims manMOSHATE - Members of Mahwelereng police and some community members of Moshate and Sekgakgapheng have on Monday afternoon recovered the body of a 34-year-old man who drowned in the Ngwaditse River last week Friday.

According to the information received, Lesiba Phillip Seanego (34) fell in the river and was swept away by the water while he was in company of his two friends. This tragedy oc-curred after heavy rainfall. It is al-leged that the trio were crossing the bridge when Seanego met his untimely death.

A mass search for the body start-ed on Friday and continued until it was recovered on Monday.

Prior to the recovery, the Mogala-kwena Mayor, Parks Sebatjane and other delegates visited the scene of the incident and the Seanego family.

After the recovery of the body Sebat-jane also addressed community members and thanked them for tirelessly working with the search team. He called on mem-bers of the community to be vigilant at times of raging storm water and encour-aged parents to warn children not to cross or play near rivers for their own safety.

MOKOPANE – Two men in their 30’s ap-peared in the Mokopane magistrate court on Monday for their suspected involvement in a robbery at an Uitkyk smallholding.

The suspects broke the security gate and front door and threatened the residents with iron bars before fleeing with a grinder, drill and four cellular phones.

Police spokesperson, sergeant Irene Ma-singi, said the police received a tip-off earlier the same day regarding the possibility of the incident. The Mahwelereng cluster trio task team and CIS of Mokopane and Mahwelereng followed up on the information and success-fully arrested two of the suspects.

Eric Sibanda (32), a Zimbabwean na-tional, was found in possession of a Hitachi drill, and Ryobi grinder. Both suspects ap-peared at Mokopane Magistrate court on 18 January and were reminded in custody until 25 February for a formal bail application. The police are still looking for two more suspects who are on the run.

Mahwelereng Cluster commander, brigadier Dikeledi Mangena, applauded the members for working tirelessly and making sure that the perpetrators were apprehended. She further extended her gratitude to the community who provided information that assisted in the arrests of these perpetrators.

LEPHALALE – Even though the Lephalale municipality hosted a stylish event to cel-ebrate top performing schools and learners in the Palala circuit last Friday, the picture painted by the Limpopo Department of Edu-cation was anything but positive.

The top performing schools in the circuit were Hoërskool Ellisras in the Ellisras clus-ter who obtained 60 distinctions during the matric examinations, Motlhajwa School in the Palala North cluster obtained four distinc-tions and Seoketseng School was the top performer in the Palala South cluster even though they did not manage any distinctions.

More worrying than the low amount of distinctions was the fact that no recogni-tion could be given to the best educators in certain subjects. “Educators in this category have to have at least more than a 60% pass rate to be recognised,” said Annamie van Vuuren, a representative of the Limpopo De-partment of Education at the event.

No recognition could be given to edu-cators who taught Agricultural Sciences, Economics, History, Life Sciences and Math-

Matric results - a cause for concernematics. The poor performance in these subjects were evident in the fact that there was no school with a 100% pass rate in the circuit and no recognition for the most improved cluster due to the fact that all the clusters performed worse than last year.

Van Vuuren maintained that even though the circuit did not perform as well as the previous years, the overall learner qualities were better. “The new 2015 Promotion and Progression Policy of the department of education resulted in almost 44% of the total number of grade 12 learn-ers being progressed learners.”

It was not all doom and gloom though, with a number of students who showed exceptional performance. Five learners of Hoërskool Ellisras received recognition for their hard work. Alize Hoepfner obtained 87.6%, Sarel Haasbroek 87.3%, Kyla Strydom 85.9%, Maricia van Deventer 83.7% and Hilde van Staden 77.9%. Let-upu school's Thapelo Motlokwa obtained 80.1% and Philemon Ndlovu 74.4%. Toki David Baloyi of Majadibodu school obtained 73.29% and Molatelo Moloto of Batlhalerwa school obtained 70.86%.
