NLP and learning
Teaching a second language has always been on discussion since it involves how
to teach in order to promote motivation and effective learning in students. Due to
this, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach that makes our students
feel motivated, achieve their goals in life and treat with some others problems. Why
NLP is so effective in terms of learning?. In this essay we will focus mainly on the
benefits that NLP provides when we use it in our classrooms.
Firstly, NLP is an approach that involves Neurological processes, language and
behavioural patterns, and It is effective in terms of learning not only because it
involves the four communication skills together but also this approach could be
useful for increase student’s self-motivation and the motivation of others.
According to Jones and Attfield (2005), NLP can make a significant contribution to
the pedagogy of personalisation and school leadership effectiveness. We know
how difficult is to catch the attention of students, and even more difficult is to make
they feel motivated; however, there is one important tool of NLP to develop
motivation in students, it is establishing Rapport. It is very important maintain a
close relation with our students, it makes them feel secure. Thus, once we have
established rapport between our students and us it could be easier to help them to
achieve their goals.
Secondly, another method of NLP is personalising learning. It is expressed thought
a number of components such as achievement, aspiration, inclusion, relational,
and accountability. All these components together supply the personalisation of the
learning in students. “…personalising learning and teaching means taking a highly
structured and responsive approach to teach child’s and young person’s learning,
in order that all are able to progress, achieve and participate. It means
strengthening the link between learning and teaching by engaging pupils –and their
parents – as partners in learning”. ( Gilbert,2006)
Finally, there is another reason why NLP is so effective, it is useful to treat with
problems such as phobias, depression or habit disorders of students. As it was
mention before, NLP involves more than develop skills and effective learning, it is
available to deal with emotions and behaviours. We have to be aware that our
labour is try to help our students in their academics goals, and also help them in
their personal development or risen their self esteem.
As a conclusion, when we teach is necessary to be aware of the approach and
techniques our students need to acquire knowledge and gain experience. Hence,
NLP is a useful approach that gives us the opportunity to establish a close relation
with our students, prepare them to be part of our society, and the opportunity they
express they feelings or doubts. If teachers use this approach in classes, education
and results will be different.
