PUBLICATION
Greetings,
And life does go on. We are pleased to let everyone know that
this is the third issue of “Positive Link” and we are grateful to all the
contributors for their varied and dynamic views which have made this
a vibrant publication so far.
Life has changed so much in the past few months and the best
we humans can do is adapt to the changing circumstances. We are
transitioning into the new normal which has been confusing and un-
comfortable but also quite a learning experience. We hope “Positive
Link” will be one of those rays of light that provides you a platform
and an outlet to share and shape your thoughts.
The community that reads and writes will always continue to
grow and learn so it is our hope that the family of Modern College Ko-
hima will make use of this publication as a medium to exchange
learning and teachings for everyone’s betterment.
As you go through the contents of this issue, may you find
something that makes you wonder and smile, something that makes
you ponder and question, something new that will inspire you; and
something that will motivate you to share in the next issue. For now,
we wish everyone safety and good health.
Happy Reading!

Dear students,
Online classes, online exams/open book exams/blended exams are the reality of today.
Waiting for offline exams will be too late. So wake up and accept every challenge. Take online
classes seriously and get prepared for other forms of exams too.
Stay safe and fit. May God bless you.
You can avoid reality but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality

Dear students,
I hope you all are doing well. It’s being four long months that we are not able to meet each other due to covid-
19 pandemic and I can’t wait to see you in the actual Class Rooms.
Aristotle, one of the greatest political thinkers rightly pointed out that man is by nature a social animal. This
essentially means human being can progress more in a group rather than individually. However, at this point in
time it becomes impossible to have that benefit.
The present dispensation has somehow changed our outlook towards life so is also towards our education sys-
tem. Now education system has taken a new turn with technology being at the forefront. How we learn has
changed drastically because how we study has changed as well. Technology is seeping into our education sys-
tem and remote learning and online classes are becoming the norm of the day.
Either ways, the point I want to make here is the Attendance (physical or virtual). Attendance becomes very
important and critical as well. Experience has shown that students are more likely to succeed in academics
when they attend classes consistently. It’s difficult for teachers and the class to build their skills and progress if
a large number of students are frequently absent.
I’m fully aware that there are various challenges to the students’ community in particular in areas like not ac-
cessible to smart phones, laptops, poor internet width band etc. However, there are various benefits too such as
attending the classes from the comfort of one’s own home besides others. So I want to encourage all our stu-
dents to make this possible. Difficulties and challenges can make us tougher and broader and we need to move
on with the world.
In conclusion I say let us attend the online classes with joy, enthusiasm and make way for learning. After all,
we still need to pray, read the Bible, the Quran, the Vedas etc even if we could not attend the Churches, the
Mosques or Temples.

Life in Modern College Kohima
The first year I joined the BA program of the College in 1st Semester in 2017, I was shy.
It started with an Orientation Programme and a senior student led the ceremony.
I remember her to be smart and possessing sharp and audible speaking.
Kept me thinking for a while if each student in the college were like that.
This thought made me make up my mind to take a step further from who I used to be back in high
school.
For I was a shy student back then.
Then I joined an organisation but did no work towards it as I was irregular and not so into the system
yet.
Then came 3rd semester in second year.
I remember that year’s History paper to be quite intimidating,
For we were made to stand up and answer questions.
This was quite hard for me.
I dreaded my responses might be wrong so I often shied away.
Somehow I overcame my timidity and fear of responding.
Looking back, I am thankful for the many questions raised.
Soon I became an NCC cadet and started actively involving in the organisation.
This helped me boost my confidence level to a new height and I am still proud of having made the right
choice.
Third year of college slowly crept in,
I tried harder to think and act outside the box which worked wonders for me.
This got me promoted to a higher rank in NCC challenging me beyond my capabilities which I continue
to accept.
Though this was going on well for some time, so often I asked myself what is should do after my
graduation.
The question has me worried and uncertain every time I ask that myself.
Then suddenly Covid-19 happened followed by nation-wide lockdown,
I was left with no choice but to leave for home.
This has kept me praying for a miracle to help turn our lives back to normalcy.
As we the student fraternity waits for our final NU examinations.
I thank Modern College Kohima for staying true to its motto and providing me with ‘True Education’
and making me realize life values.
Long Live MCK

Miss Everything
I was on the other side of the edge
when I heard a sweet alluring voice of a
young lass saying “Hi everything” to which
I responded “kya kehna”. She was sweet
and gentle, her nature and beauty cap-
tured my emotional heart. Within no time I
felt as “Kuch kuch hota hai” with her. She
“chori chori chupke chupke” stole my heart
to which I tried my best to resist. She then
pleaded me “Kaho na pyar hai”
I always find myself slowly dragged
into her warm and loving arms, I shouted
on top of my voice “Pyar kiya toh darna
kya”. I will never forsake or betray her.
She will be my eternal love.

The second quarter of 2020 did not have much to offer but it did have so much to offer! From
‘Lockdown’ and ‘Quarantine’ assuming the forefront of most individual’s vocabulary to appearance of the term
‘New Normal’ which is supposed to be comforting and accommodating, from undergoing different stages of lock-
down life at home to changing food and sleep habits, from missing your outdoor outfits to living a year in your
pyjamas, time seem to stand still yet life sure has flown!
These uncertain times saw countless phenomena taking over our social and individual life right before
our eyes. It gradually started with a ‘Meme boom’ where memers (sic) earned a life for themselves for immor-
talizing these confusing and grim moments captured in caricature. Then followed the endless online yoga and
fitness regimes which took over social media and all at once, everyone joined the mad rush of needing to stay
strong and fit, followed by the less known upset uproar of gym and fitness studio owners over losing their im-
pact and passion collectively called customers. Loads of rooms if not houses saw renovations and went through
facelifts after being put at bay for years, pets received more love and attention during this time; closets and
cabinets, consoles and drawers finally got sorted after a score, working moms became heroes overnight!
Picking up a new hobby became an overnight trend and that’s when baking made her grand entrance and
all at once everything is cake! From stores running out of flour and baking tins to newbie bakers finally differ-
entiating baking powder and baking soda, from jam and juice making hitting headlines out of fruits of the season
to dads and brothers learning how to cook, it sure is a roller coaster ride! Many have started digging on books
they never realised they owned while more people spent time with nature which is evident from the endless
train of sunset and nature photography on social media.
Meanwhile, gardening became a new hip after the succulent industry carried the entire flora business on
its shoulders for so long! Another spectacle worth mentioning is the Faceapp and Anime app era where swapped
gender and anime’ed pictures started doing rounds. I admit I fell prey to the first one and molies of molies it
came out so good that even my best friend would have low key fallen for me!
Overtime, most beds seem flatter, thumbs and wrists sore from overuse while our shoes lay in the cor-
ner depressing from want of use. Also, taking rigorous screenshots became a daytime chore because all at once
all materials on internet make sense, becoming essential wisdom pills. Food and pets became internet heroes be-
cause people aren’t going anywhere and photography needs a life too. While so much is going on, for most people,
your clothes and books think you probably died. And to top it all, Instagram is less noisy because all the slay
queens are in village and there’s poor network there.
On the brighter side, these uncertain times saw creativity reinstalled, reading and writing resurrected,
selflessness rediscovered, human connection redefined. It also saw many of the student and teacher populace
purchasing or upgrading their smartphones in the light of the ‘New Learning Order’.
In conclusion, after going through all these together, if by now you are not attacked by this overwhelm-
ing surge of wanting to keep yourselves up and about by accommodating change, being willing to suffer for the
discomfort of change and also learning new things, I do not know what else will!
Stay strong, safe, fit and happy!

Begin with the end in mind
I have learned a lot of things during this lockdown. I got a chance to fulfill my desire to learn
new things. Apart from that, painting and crafting are my hobbies. These crafts are made of
carton, newspapers, tic-tac containers, plastic boxes and fevicol.
“The capacity to learn is a gift, the ability to learn is a skill and the willingness to learn is a
choice.”
Do something creative everyday!

‘THE QUOTE COMPETITION’ ON “MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS”
In times of fear and uncertainty during this pandemic, when threats to one’s own sur-
vival and that of others become one of the main issues of daily life, many believe that mental
health care can wait and that efforts should focus on preserving life. However, mental health is
precisely one of the keys to surviving this latest pandemic and all that entails in the long term,
from the potential crisis in the provision of constructing a positive mind set to help preserve and
re-construct a post-pandemic society. Keeping this in mind, the Department of English, organ-
ised ‘The Quote Competition’ on the theme, “Mental Health Matters”. The purpose of this com-
petition was to make everyone aware of the importance of one’s mental health at all times.
Through this competition, we saw students’ outlet in beautiful, thought provoking, original
quotes in perdurable words. To quote Percy Bysshe Shelley, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far
behind?”- Let this be a reminder that you are not alone and together we can overcome. Follow-

LITERATI ON A SPREE
Field trips serve one vital function as far as education is concerned. Field trips link the
classroom experience with the outside world and in doing so, they not only improve learning,
but also give both the learner and educator valued practical experience. College trips are impor-
tant for educational and recreational time. The Department of English organised a field trip un-
der the theme "Literati on a Spree" in order to help ourselves get in touch with the natural envi-
ronment.
This trip happened on March 14, 2020 to Mima Bee Farm which is located in Jakhama
Circle of Kohima district, Nagaland. The group consisted of Students from BA 2nd, 4th and 6th
semesters; altogether, 25 students and 2 teachers from the Department of English. Kohima is
situated near numerous picturesque sites; therefore, everyone understood the trip will be enjoy-
able. The group left Kohima early in the morning and spent 30 minutes in a bus ride to reach
the destination.
When we finally arrived in the field, there were picturesque trees covering the area. The
farm had a relaxing environment. The weather was humid but exceptional. There were villagers
working in the fields. The site was serene and had a peculiar atmosphere which was pleasing.
Students were divided into groups in collecting twigs and branches to make fire, gather wild ba-
nana leaves to serve as plates, draw water from nearby stream, cutting of vegetables and cook-
ing. It was a unanimous decision not to buy plastic cups and plates in an effort to save the envi-
ronment. Moreover, all these work division was done to appreciate the dignity of labour and in-
culcate the habit of group effort.
As part of recreational activity, the students and teachers played volleyball, football,
dumb charade and even dancing and singing. The Literati indeed seized the day and had tre-
mendous fun, frolicking under the sun amidst the buzzing sound of the bees, chirping of the ci-
cadas and the whooshing sound of the peasants' tools in the fields. Lots of pictures were taken
to capture the well lived moments; although the trip was very short, the adventure shared and
spent among the students and teachers will last a lifetime.
This way of entertainment was a good way in appreciating and reconnecting with the
beauty of natural environment. After all, Literature is inspired by Life; Life is inspired by Na-
ture. So, Nature is the paramount and an inspiration of everything. Overall, the trip was quite
successful and a fun experience.

Monthly Report on College Activities:
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the level of Education had shifted from Face to Face to the
online mode of Teaching-Learning. Though this has led to many differences and challenges,
both teachers and students are learning to adjust to the new normal. Monthly Staff meetings
are held to review the progress of both teachers and students. The IQAC organizes Internal Fac-
ulty Development Programme from time to time on how to conduct ONLINE CLASSES through
Google Classroom/Meet. An Internal Faculty Development Programme was organized by the
Research Committee, Modern College Kohima on 29th July, 2020. Dr Vitsou Yano and Mrs.
Chanini were the Resource Persons.
A Positive breakthrough by the students: Expressing their thoughts, feelings and experiences in
the form of writing articles was perceived among the students and the articles were published
in the local dailies. It is indeed a very encouraging aspect to see the students exhibiting their
creativity during these trying times. Hope to see more students involving in producing original
and creative ideas in the days to come.
There will be Virtual Orientation for B.A. and B.voc 1st Semester on 3rd August, 2020
and Online Classes will start from 4th August, 2020.
The First Online Test for 3rd and 5th Semesters will start from 17th August -25th August,
2020. The Test will be conducted for 35 marks which will be a part of the Internal As-
sessment.
