PREAMBLE

Quick and effective communication among stake holders is essential

for progress of any organization. Students, faculty, supporting staff need

to communicate among themselves and with persons outside the Institute

– other organizations, alumni, parents of students, prospective students

and employees, government officials and the public. A smart and

comprehensive communication system consisting of letter mail, email,

telephone, fax and mobiles is essential.

NITK Surathkal, a premier engineering Institute of our country has

established an extensive and efficient communication infrastructure. The

Institute has set up high speed voice and data campus-wide network, which

can be reached from every laboratory, hostel room or residential quarter.

To use this facility effectively, we need a directory of telephone numbers

and email addresses which is widely available. It gives immense pleasure

to present this “Telephone Directory” to the NITK community and sister

concerns. This Directory provides the contact numbers of local utilities,

hospitals and other agencies for the benefit of the NITK community.

It is our earnest hope that the new directory will be helpful to all

How to reach NITK

The Institute is located amid 300 acres of sylvan surroundings on the east and sun-kissed

sands of the Arabian Sea to the west. 22 kilometers North of Mangalore City along the Kanyakumari-

Mumbai National Highway 17, NITK is easily accessible from all parts of the country.

Surathkal (please do not confuse this place with Surat which is in Gujarat ), on the Konkan

Railway, is the nearest railhead and is a stopover for most trains passing through Konkan Railway.

While Surathkal and Kankanady are the closest alighting points for visitors coming by train from

the North; Mangalore is the Terminus for many trains from South India.

The campus is in the midst of beautiful rural settings. On the western side lies the vast

serene Arabian sea and its beautiful, natural un spoilt beach. The campus, having an area of

about 295 acres, is one of the finest sites on the coastal area. It accommodates the residential

housing colony for the faculty and staff, and hostels for all the students.

The vast greenery in and around the college campus holds the magic key to the peace

&tranquility. Green Parks, gardens, playing grounds, Special field’s etc are all provided in order

to develop the talent of the students &to give everyone a peaceful atmosphere. The sandy beach

line of the campus is frequented by the students & faculty owing to its scenic beauty. The campus

offers an undisturbed and peaceful environment for education. The campus life and the college

facilities encourage students to mould and shape their personality and to acquire all round capabilities

and inter-personal skills. The opposite side is surrounded by a cluster of tiny villages.

Being in the west coast, either it rains or shines. Either way the humidity is quite high

or the proximity of the sea is the solace. Rains can be quite heavy. Umbrellas / Rain ware and

appropriate clothes and footwear are a must to manage with the seasons.

Passengers alighting at Surathkal station can engage auto rickshaws that will take them to

the college 2 km’s from the station for Rs.20/-. Further, one could also reach Surathkal Bus

Stand and board regular service buses that ply via the college. At Kankanady, bus route no.11

from the station takes one to Mangalore City during the day time. From Mangalore Railway Station,

all Express buses to Udupi, Manipal or Karkala drop you at the College Express Bus Stop which

is closer to the Administrative Block, Departments, Girls Hostel Block, and the Guest House.

There are also many Service buses from Mangalore to Kinnigoli, Kateel, Mulky and Padubidri

that pass through NITK and stop at all four Bus Stops across the College campus, the first being

the Boys’ Hostel. However, you may still have to use the old acronym KREC to the taxi drivers

and the bus conductors. Kannada and Tulu are the main languages spoken in DK (that is Dakshina

Kannada). But the friendly DK-ite is likely to quickly put you at ease by responding in your own

language! Almost all south Indian languages can be used here. So are Hindi and English.

Bus Routes from Mumbai, Goa and Bangalore ( that terminate at Udupi-Manipal) pass through

the College and visitors can disembark right away.

All visitors with wards at NITK can apply through them in advance for accommodation

at the International Hostel (IH) and the College Guest House. Besides these, Surathkal and

Mangalore are dotted with a flurry of lodges, food Joints and Shopping Complexes. Mangalore

and Udupi are the nearer towns. Travel time by train, bus and air to NITK (Timings are

approximate and do not add the breaks in journey)

The sea shore bordering NITK, and the nearby lighthouse form NITK’s sunset point. Besides,

the beach also draws hordes of visitors from distant places.

Bekal Fort, Kasargod: Is a coastal fortress and verdant beach situated 70 km off Mangalore.

Bekal Fort can be reached from Kasargod, Kerala State; which in turn is an hour’s bus ride

from Mangalore.

St. Mary’s Island, Udupi: Tiles Factory; situated off the coast, is a volcanic island.

Goa: Known worldwide for beaches, and architecture. 360 km’s, 8 hrs by daily buses and trains

Karwar: Beaches, Sea Bird Naval base and Kaiga Nuclear power plant. 5 hrs by regular day

time buses and trains.

Kudremukh: Forest Reserve and Trekker’s Paradise. 3 hrs by bus from NITK.

Madikeri, Kodagu: a visit to the Coorg coffee plantations and waterfalls to recharge spent batteries.

3 hrs from Mangalore by bus.

Kemmangundi: Cool air,waterfalls and lush greenery. Only for the steel-willed and clad explorers.

Udhagamandalam (Ooty): Queen of Hill Stations, famed for its annual flower show. 12 hour

bus journey via Mysore.

NITK is close to the temple towns of Udupi (Sri Krishna Temple and Madhva Maths) 60 km

Kateel (Durgaparameshwari Temple) 20km Sringeri (Sharada Peetham) 75km

Kollur (Mookambika Temple) 75km

Dharmasthala 35km.

All towns are well-connected to Mangalore or Surathkal by frequent buses.

Jain Shrines: Dharmasthala is known for its age-old sculpture of Bahubali.

Sabarimala: Place of pilgrimage for Lord Ayyappa devotees. Season commences mid-November

every year. KSRTC organizes overnight bus services each season.

Guruvayoor: Famed Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala, regular overnight bus services.

Mysore: world-famous Dasarah festival and Chamundi hills; regular overnight bus services.

Retreat Centre.

Potah: spiritual centre in South Kerala, on the rail route from Mangalore to Thiruvananthapuram.
