Nine ways to teach resilience through Family History Your family’s unique story can help your loved ones succeed! #1 – The Family Tree Whether you want to prepare a child for a family reunion, or introduce him to distant or deceased relatives, the family tree is a good place to start, for ages 5 and up. Start with a small branch of the child’s family, with names or pictures of his immediate family. When the child can correctly place his own family members, it’s time to ask “What would Mommy’s tree look like?” Terms like Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin begin to make sense in this context. Place these names or pictures on an actual tree branch, or create an art project. Always start from the child at first. Older children can start from a parent or grandparent. Unlike real trees, family trees expand in multiple directions, so you may need to define the focus each time. Start with one person, and move up or down from there. #2 – Games Children are naturally playful, so games and puzzles are a great way to teach. Again, begin with the child’s immediate family. Create a card for each family member. At first, 3X5” cards or photographs will work, but as the game grows, you will want to use smaller cards. Business cards work well for this. At the top of each card, put the person’s name and birth date. In the middle of the card, their

thenamesandfacesandtalkaboutchangesinthefamily.

#3–FamilyRecipesChildrenlovefood.Theylovetoeatit,andmakeit,andplaywithit.Theywanttoknowwhereitcomesfrom,andhowittiesthemtotheirfamily.Whetheryoucollectyourfamilyrecipesinabox,oranotebook,orafancycookbook,makesureyoutellthestoriesthatgowiththoserecipes.Writethemdownandkeepthemwiththerecipes,sotheyaren’tforgotten.Foodisthefirstexpressionoflovemostkidsunderstand,sofamilyrecipesandcelebratorytreatsareanaturalwaytoconnectthemtotheirrelatives.Arecipefileorbookiseasytocompile,andcanincludepicturesaswellasrecipes,toconnectfamilyflavorswiththerelativeswhocook(oreat)them.

Andofcourse,childrenlovetocook,somakesureyoutakethetimetocookyourfavoriteswiththem.Inanageofrestaurants,microwaves,anddrive-thrus,it’shardforchildrentocomprehendhowmuchofafamily’stimewasconsumedwithcookingandcleaningforpreviousgenerations.

#4–FamilyJokesAuntAlicewasalargewomanwithanexuberantpersonality.Ididn’tseeherveryoften,andshediedwhenIwasprettyyoung,butIwillneverforgetthejokeshetoldaboutSaintPeter.EverytimeanyonementionedAuntAlice,theywouldreferencethepunchlineofthatjoke,andeveryonewouldcrackuplaughing.Herjoiedevivrewassummedupinthatpunchline,andwelovedherforit.

#5–SongsWhenchildrenarelittle,it’seasytopassalongthechildhoodsongsandrhymes,butdon’tforgettosharethefavoritesongsoftheerasyouhavelivedthrough.Someofthosesongsweregreat,andsomeofthemwerehorrid,buttheyallbecameapartofyourworld.Sharethatworld!

tell,andbecausehetoldthemtome,theybecamemystoriestoshare.Mygrandchildrenwillnevermeethim,buttheywillhearthestories,andtheywilllearnalotaboutwhotheyareandwhattheycanaccomplishbyhearingabouthisexploits.Giveyourlovedonesthatsamegritthroughthestoriesonlyyoucanshare.#8–VisitthePlacesEveniftheterrainisdifferentnow,thereisnothinglikeseeingthelocationswherethosefamilystoriestookplace.Childrenimaginethateveryneighborhoodlooksliketheirsuntiltheyactuallyvisitanewplaceandseepeoplelivingthere.Travelingwithchildrenisauniquechallenge,butwithoutthatexperience,theirviewoftheworldwillbemorescreen-basedthanreality-based.Evenifyoucan’ttakethemtoseewhereyoulived,youcangetoutthemaps.Talkabouthowandwhyyoumovedfromplacetoplace.Whatweretheeconomicfactorsthatdroveyourfamily’smigrations?Wasyourfamilyunique,orwasitpartofalargermovement?Whatworld
