INTRODUCTION

Classroom management is a term used by teachers to describe the process

of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behaviour by

students. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behaviour .It is

possibly the most difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers , indeed

experiencing problems in this area causes some to leave teaching altogether .In

1981 the US National Education Association reported that 36% of teachers said

they would probably not go into teaching if they had to decide again , A major

reason was “ negative student attitude and discipline.”

3

Page 4: Nimmi Susan (1)

According to Moskowitz and Hayman(1976),One a teacher losses control

of their classroom, it becomes increasingly more difficult for them to regain that

control. Also research from Berliner (1988) and Brophy and good (1986) Shows

that the time a teacher has to take to correct mis behaviour caused by poor

classroom management skills results in a lower rate of academic engagement in

the classroom .

From the student's perspective , effective classroom management involves

clear communication of behavioural and academic expectation as well as co-

operative learning environment. Douglas Brooks (1985) reports seminal research

on the first day of school activity selection and sequence of novice middle school

teachers compared with experienced successful classroom managers. Brooks

reports that effective classroom managers organized their activities on the first day

of school consistent with the emerging needs of the students .

Classroom management is closely linked to issues of motivation, discipline

and respect .Methodologists remain a matter of passionate debate among teachers,

approaches vary depending on the beliefs a teacher holds regarding education

psychology. A large part of traditional classroom management involves behaviour

modification, although many teacher see using behaviour approaches alone overly

simplistic. Many teachers establish rules and procedures at the begin of the school

4

year .According to Gootman (2008) rules give students concrete direction to

ensure that our expectation becomes a reality.

They also toy to be consistent in enforcing these rules and procedures.

Many would also argue for positive consequence when rules are flowed and

negative consequences when rules are broken .These are newer perspective. On

classroom management that attempt to be holistic.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT IS A PROCESS

Classroom management as the actions taken to create an

environment that support and facilitates academic and social emotional

learning .Toward this goal, teachers must

1. Develop caring , supportive relationships with and among students.

2. Organize and implement instruction in ways that optimize students access to

learning.

3. Use group management methods that encourage students engagement in

academic tasks

4. Promote the development of student's social skills and regulations ;and

5

Page 6: Nimmi Susan (1)

5. Use appropriate interventions to assists students with behaviour problems.

ROLE OF TEACHER IN CLASSROOM

MANAGEMENT:-

Teachers play variuos roles in a typical classroom, but surely one of the

most important is that of classroom manager. Effective teaching and learning can

not take place in a poorly managed classroom.Effective teachers appear to be

effective with students of all achievement levels regardless of the levels of

heterogeneity in their classes.

If the teacher is an ineffective , students under that teacher's tutelage ,will

achieve inadequate progress academically, regardless of how similar or different

they are regarding their academic achievements.

The effective teacher performs many functions that can be organized in to

three major roles;

(1)Making wise choices about the most effecting instruction strategies to

employ.

(2)Designing classroom curriculum to facilitate student learning.and;

(3)Making effective use of classroom management techniques.

6

Page 7: Nimmi Susan (1)

Therefore,effective

teachers have a wide array of

instructional

strategies at their disposal, are

skilled at identifying and

articulating the proper sequence

and pacing of their content, are skilled in classroom management techniques.

COMMON MISTAKES IN CLASSROOM

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

In an effort to maintain order in the classroom sometimes teachers can

actually make the problems worse. Therefore it is important to consider some of

the basic mistakes commonly made when implementing classroom behaviour

management strategies.

7

Page 8: Nimmi Susan (1)

The teacher may raise his or her voice increase adverse consequences in an

effort to make the approach work. This type of interaction impair the teacher-

student relationship. Instead of allowing this to happen, it is often better to

simply try a new approach.

In consistency in expectations and consequences is an additional mistake that

can lead to dysfunction in classroom .Teachers must be consistent in their

expectations and consequences to help ensure that students understand that rules

will be enforced. To avoid this, teachers should be communicate expectations to

students clearly and be sufficiently committed to the classroom management

procedures to enforce them consistently.

FACTORS AFFECTING CLASSROOM

MANAGEMENT:-

8

Page 9: Nimmi Susan (1)

The term 'classroom management ' doesn't have just one definition.

However ,it most generally refers to the way in which a teacher or instructor sets

up the classroom so that the students can learn most effectively. Setting up the

classroom can mean both physically and how the teacher structures the day. If

you're thinking about how to manage your classroom better , be aware of the

some of the things that may affect the way you can manage it.

(1)Environment

The environment can have both noticeable and unnoticeable effects on how well

you can manage the classroom and how well the students listen. For example, if

you have a full classroom of 30 students , then the students in the back will not

hear you as well, The environment doesn't allow them to sit closer.

(2) Your Approach

How you set up rules in your classroom will determine if students keep those

rules or not. For example, instead of telling the students what the rules

are ,develop an activity that lets them create the rules. It's a lot easier for you call

a student on a rule if the student to follow it. This goes the same for assignments.

While you can't let students decide the guidelines mean. This will help them feel

like they had a say in creating the assignment.

(3)Disabilities

9

Page 10: Nimmi Susan (1)

Students with disabilities ,learning or otherwise will always affect the way you

manage the classroom. If one student has a learning disability ,you may need to

spend more one-on-one time with this student or allow a development technician

to work with him. This can distract other students or leave them feeling alone.

(4)Home Life

Social construction research teachers us that nobody walks in to a situation as a

clean slate. When students come into a classroom , they bring all the social stuff

that happened that morning or the night before with them . This might mean that

a family member is in town, causing them to get excited easily and not focus or

it might mean that their parents are fighting and the student doesn't feel well and

ignores you.

BENEFITS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

(1) Safety:-

If a teacher has control of her classroom , it is less likely that a fight will break

out or violence will occur. By establishing clear and consistent standards of

behaviour teachers can ensure that their classes are organized and productive and

that students do not have the opportunity to engage in fights or inflict harm on

another student.

(2) Positive class environment building:-

Student work more productively, and share more openly, when there is a positive

classroom environment.Through behaviour management , teachers can create an

10

Page 11: Nimmi Susan (1)

atmosphere of mutual respect in which all classroom participants feel safe to

share their options without risk of censure.

(3) More teaching time:-

Time spent dealing with continuous behavioral interruptions is time taken away

from teaching. By setting up clear behaviour expectations and consequences at

the beginning of the year, teachers can create a fluid and productive class in

which time is spent engaging in educational activities , not responding to student

mis behaviour.

(4) Relationship building:-

Through effective classroom management , teachers can build healthy and

mutually respectful relationships with their students, and allow students to build

these positive relationships with their peers.

(5) Preparation for Workforce:-

Many students eagerly look forward to adulthood, thinking that they will be free

of the restrictive rules and guidelines that they follow in school daily. Classroom

rules help prepare students to successfully follow the rules that will dictate their

actions later in life.

TEN TIPS FOR CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

1. Build community

11

Page 12: Nimmi Susan (1)

2. Design a safe, friendly and well managed classroom environment.

3. Include students in creating rules norms, routines and consequences

4. create a variety of communication channels.

5. Always he calm, fair and consistent

6. Know the students you teach

7.Address conflicts quickly and wisely

8. Integrate positive classroom rituals.

9. Keep it Real

10.Partner with parents and guardians.

CONCLUSION:-

Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques

that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly ,focused, attentive, on task,

and academically productive during a class. When classroom management

strategies are executed effectively, teachers minimize the behaviours that impede

learning for both individual students and groups of students. While maximizing

the behaviours that facilitate or enhance learning. Generally speaking, effective

teachers tend to display strong classroom management skills, while the hallmark

of the inexperienced or less effective teacher is a disorderly classroom filled with

students who are not working or paying attention.

According to specialists in the field of education school and classroom

management aims at encouraging and establishing student self control through a

process of promoting positive student achievement and behaviour. Thus academic

achievement, teacher efficiency, and teacher and student behaviour are directly

linked with the concept of school and classroom management.
