Over the course of the last ten years The Royal Court has become known for a number of different things including producing some of the best Scouse comedy plays around.

Night Collar is one of the original and best Scouse comedies and when Jimmy Power approached us we were delighted to get the old cab out and give it another run. It is a show that was written by Jimmy and the sadly departed Tony Furlong who were cabbies for many years. The characters in the show are all very recognisable and the theatre is full of great big laughs of recognition for people that the audience know or (sometimes) have been themselves.

All of us at the theatre were very sad to hear of Tony’s passing away last year. He was a good man to work with and I hope that this show will demonstrate what he did best. Make people laugh. It is good to be working not just with Jimmy on the show but also Donna, Tony’s partner. We hope that we have put together a production that Tony would be proud of.

The cast that we have got for the show is full of your favourite Royal Court faces. We’ve got Jake Abraham shaking his hips, the much loved Eithne Browne, Suzanne Collins making everyone smile, Michael Ledwich bringing his cheeky scouse charm and Lenny Wood flashing his bottom (don’t

worry it’s in the script). A big thanks to Alan Stocks who, I’m sure you will agree, puts in a brilliant performance as the driver of the cab.

For a director for the show you couldn’t get better than Bob Eaton. He really understands the audience here and we are delighted to have him working with us again.

The show is, as ever, set at Christmas and as we sit in the May sunshine, we are grateful to The Royal Court Liverpool Trust for our presents. They have done a great job with our onging refurbishment, raising £2.8m with the help of European Regional Development Fund, Liverpool City Council and, of course, you lot buying tickets.

We know that the foyer and circle areas look a bit rough around the edges at the moment and we’re grateful for you bearing with us. All of the work will be finished by the autumn so you can enjoy it all then!In the meantime, it’s time to get the engine started. Taxi!

Night Collar was an instant success and firmly established Furlong and Power as a formidable force in Liverpool writing. The play began in the Playhouse Studio during the 1994 Liverpool Festival of Comedy. Following a sell out run at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre in 1995, Night Collar went on to play to packed houses at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre. The run was extended due to popular demand and went on to break all existing Box Office records with an overall attendance of more than five thousand.

The show then moved on to the Playhouse in 1997 and has appeared four times at the Royal Court since then. Each time the play has been produced it has brought thousands of people

through the doors and has left everybody laughing their way to the taxi rank at the end of the night.

With popular theatre undergoing a renaissance in Liverpool (and at the Royal Court in particular) Night Collar has come to be regarded as the show that started it all off. This is a show that was written in the best traditions of storytelling - a night of pure entertainment that will make you laugh out loud. What’s going on?You may have noticed that we have got the builders in at the moment!

This is Act Two of the Royal Court’s refurbishment which includes an extension of the building to fill the space that used to be covered by the canopy. This will allow us to move Box Office to the front of the building and free up the current Box Office space to be used as a multi-purpose area. The new entrance will be a striking addition while still being in keeping with the current Art Deco style. We are also opening a new basement venue and adding lifts to all areas of the theatre.

The Welcome Project will create 480 square metres of new foyer space and dramatically improve the public realm outside the theatre. There will be a new lift running from basement to balcony giving people with mobility difficulties access to the whole building. It will create a terrace at first floor level, new box office facilities and a new welcome space which people can enjoy during the day as well as in the evening before and after shows.

Jake returns to the Liverpool stage after taking time out to complete several TV/film projects and reunites with director Bob Eaton. “I’ve worked with Bob many times, the first when I was12. I love being on stage in my home town and I’m really looking forward to performing at The Royal Court again.

EITHNE BROWNE

A native of Liverpool, Eithne’s first appearance was on stage at the Liverpool

Playhouse in Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers. On its transfer to the West End Eithne took over from Barbara Dickson in the lead role for over 50 performances. Not bad for a first job!

She has also directed Carol Cullington’s hard-hitting play Connected, a community touring piece

Eithne was voted Woman Of The Year at the 2013/14 Daily Post & Echo Arts & Culture Awards. She is also the voice of the world famous Mersey Ferry.

SUZANNE COLLINS

Suzanne has worked professionally as an actress in the TV, Film

and Theatre industry for almost 20 years. Her first T.V appearance was in Channel 4’s soap opera Brookside as much loved character ‘Nikki Shadwick’

During her career she has been successfully cast in numerous Television shows, Films and Theatre productions including comedy and demanding psychological drama roles for which she received considerable plaudits and acclaim.

An ambassador for the city, Suzanne works tirelessly for many charities, modelling and hosting many events.

MICHAEL LEDWICHMichael is a born and bred Liverpool actor. After working from a young

age, Michael went on to receive his training at the city’s Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). Graduating in 2008, he was fortunate enough to be shortlisted for and then ultimately receive the ‘Equity Bursary Award for Drama School Graduates’, since then performing in TV, film and on stages up and down the country.

BOB EATONDIRECTORBob’s first job was in 1971 as Assistant Director at the Victoria Theatre Stoke. During the mid 1970s he was a member of Alan Ayckbourn’s Scarborough company as actor, director and writer.

In the late 70s he was Associate Director of Contact Theatre Manchester and in 1981 became Artistic Director of the Liverpool Everyman. His productions here included Alan Bleasdale’s It’s A Madhouse, his own show, Lennon which subsequently transferred to The Astoria Theatre, London and the Entermedia Theater New York, winning the Sunday Times award for Best Musical of 1986, and the stage musical version of Our Day Out on which he collaborated with Willy Russell. In 1984 he became Artistic Director of the London Bubble Theatre and from 1996 to 2003 he was Director of The Belgrade Theatre Coventry. Bob has written many plays and musicals including Good Golly Miss Molly, Three Minute Heroes and the lyrics for Face. His many collaborations with Sayan Kent include The Good Companions, Limestone Cowboy and Silas Marner.

Last year he directed a new musical Soul Sister based on the life and times of Ike and Tina Turner, at the Hackney Empire, which transfered to the West End and is now on a national tour. He has recenetly directed Twopence Across The Mersey at the Epstein Theatre which is now on tour in the Northwest.

IAN SCOTT LIGHTING DESIGNIan has designed the lighting for many shows at the Royal Court including A Nightmare on Lime Street, Our Day Out, Scouse Pacific, On The Ledge, Eight Miles High, Council Depot Blues and Ladies Day. In 2012 he designed the set and lighting for the Lodestar/Royal Court co-productions of Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Other recent projects: Marco Polo (Bergen National Opera), Where The Wild Things Are/Higgelty Piggelty Pop (Aldeburgh Festival, Los Angeles Philharmonic & Barbican), The Victorian in the Wall (Will Adamsdale/Fuel), The Ugly Spirit (Fittings/South Bank), Touch Me (Coisceim Dance Theatre), Blok/Eko (The Wrestling School), The 39 Steps (Criterion Theatre) and Reasons To Be Cheerful (Graeae).

As an Associate Artist with the experimental theatre company Suspect Culture Ian designed the set and lighting for much of the company’s work including Timeless, Mainstream and Lament.

KATE HARVEYSOUND DESIGNKate was born in Blackpool and at the age of 15 went on work experience at Blackpool Opera House.

At 16 she was offered the job of lighting operator on Danny La Rue’s summer season show and has enjoyed a career in technical theatre ever since. Shows worked there include Blood Brothers, Dr. Dolittle, Grease, Sunset Boulevard and Boogie Nights. She then spent two years at Stageworks Worldwide Productions designing and operating two pantomimes and working many corporate and conference events.

Six months at Butlins in sunny Skegness saw her sound engineer for famous acts such as Slade, Bad Manners, Chesney Hawkes, Sinitta, Right Said Fred and many more. A move to the ocean waves to work as a production technician for Island Cruises let her enjoy four months in Brazil and six months in the Mediterranean before securing a job as production manager for P&O cruises. Mixing sound to the stars all over the world including Jane McDonald, Brian Conley and Petula Clark she then felt it was time to come home.

In June 2008 dry land was calling and Kate is now delighted to be working at Royal Court Liverpool where she recently designed Night Collar, Shirley Valentine, Our Day Out - The Musical, Lennon, Scouse Pacific, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Little Scouse on the Prairie, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Reds And Blues - The Musical and Ladies Day.

MARIE JONESCOSTUME SUPERVISORMarie studied fashion and then moved on to theatre costume interpretation at Mabel Fletcher College. Marie’s work as a freelance costumier has included costumes for Oldham Coliseum, The Royal Exchange, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Jimmy McGovern’s film Liam, Beyond Friendship for Mersey Television and the many pantomime dames who have appeared on the Everyman stage.

She has worked extensively at the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and has recently been employed as full time Wardrobe Supervisor. Most recently Marie’s work at the Everyman and Playhouse has included: Much Ado About Nothing, The Electric Hills, The Flint Street Nativity, The Tempest, Unprotected, Billy Liar, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe, Urban Legend, Fly, Breezeblock Park, The Entertainer, Still Life And The Astonished Heart, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Anniversary, Dr Faustus, The May Queen, Cruel Sea and All My Sons.
