An introductionDear Guest,

Thank you and welcome to the 2nd A Night of Champions Charity Ball in aid of the Mo Farah Foundation’s work in both Africa and the UK.

On behalf of Mo and Tania, the Board of Trustees and all the staff at the Mo Farah Foundation we are delighted that you are joining us on this very special evening at the Hurlingham Club, for what promises to be a truly wonderful affair.

Since our inception in 2011, the Mo Farah Foundation has dedicated itself to improving the lives of underprivileged and impoverished communities on both sides of the world. Understanding the needs of the many and channelling them through sports development, health, wellbeing and education has formed the corner stone of our mission, and so it is with great pride that we welcome you here tonight.

As a direct result of the inaugural ball in 2012, we have delivered essential aid and relief in a number of ways including setting up and running Mother and Child healthcare clinics, building water wells and irrigation canals and expanding our education programmes. Additionally, we were able to launch the Mo Farah Foundation Academy, dedicated to furthering sporting excellence in the UK in preservation of the Olympic Legacy.

Through all of that work we have managed to reach and help over 200,000 people, which we could not have done without your help.

Tonight, we hope you have a fantastic evening and help us to raise more funds to continue furthering our work and bringing us closer to our goal of “working towards making a difference to the lives of millions.”

Thank you for your continued support.

The Bulahar Village Project

Bulahar is a small rural village situated 112km north of Hargeisa city and consisting of 60 families.

Their existing well had turned salty meaning the women had to walk even longer distances every day to find clean water and then carry the heavy canisters on their back to provide them with essential water.

They didn’t have enough water to grow their crops which they not only ate but fed their livestock with. In desperation the animals resorted to eating cardboard causing them to become ill and ultimately perish. Livestock is used not only for milk and meat but to sell and earn money so the situation reached a critical point.

Realising the urgent needs of this village the Mo Farah Foundation took the initial step of building a shallow water well a mere kilometre’s walk away ensuring safe and clean water was accessible to all.

60 food packages including flour, sugar, rice and cooking oil and 60 goats were given to the village (1 for each family) in response to the immediate needs, followed by 2 days livestock training delivered by Mo Farah Foundation ground staff and qualified veterinarians.

We continue to work with this community of 420 people and are now fundraising so we can build water pipes and planting taps to carry water from the well directly into their village helping them become self sufficient.

Our work in Africa

Some of the reasons we work in Somalia and Kenya:

93% of people living in rural Somalia do not have access to clean water

Life expectancy in Somalia is just 51 years

1 in every 14 women who go into labour dies

Page 7: A Night of Champions auction programme

The Kismayo Mother & Child Healthcare Clinic

Since the collapse of Central Government in 1991, there has been a severe lack of infrastructure in Somalia. In particular, healthcare services have been affected resulting in many local communities suffering from recurring illnesses. Among the most vulnerable are mothers and their newborn babies with as many as 1 in 10 children dying due to ill health.

Kismayo has seen a significant increase in people repatriated to their communities from neighbouring refugee camps emphasising the need for a permanent health clinic. In 2013 the Mo Farah Foundation established its first Mother and Child specialist clinic to address the ever growing need.

Today, we are proud to say that the Mo Farah Foundation clinic has seen and treated over 5,000 families through provisions of immunisations for children under one, tetanus toxoid shots to women of child bearing age, provision of vitamin A packs, ensuring regular supply of iron/folic acid as well as provide basic health care services & nutrition to all.

We are currently working on expanding the number of Mother and Child clinics we run to help more people.

Some of the reasons we work in Somalia and Kenya:

One third of all children under five are malnourished

Just under 1 million people in Somalia are still in ‘crisis’ or ‘emergency’ conditions’

Page 8: A Night of Champions auction programme

Mo Farah AcademyAs part of the London Olympics legacy there was a promise to continue elite success, development of more sports facilities and encouraging participation in schools sports and the wider community. Our aims include nurturing and harnessing the sporting talent of young adults. So in 2013 we launched the Mo Farah Academy.

In conjunction with Brunel & St Mary’s University who were carefully selected for their dedicated centres of sporting excellence, the Mo Farah Foundation provides financial, practical and technical support to the successful athletes of the Mo Farah Foundation Academy along with key guidance and access to world level coaching and fitness facilities.

All students of the Academy will have demonstrated a keen track record in their chosen discipline and proven their extreme desire to further enhance their sporting excellence.

“I set an example to the younger swimmers. They can see that, because I have been awarded this scholarship. Deaf swimmers are valued, and it pays for them to keep swimming and studying hard.”

from St Mary’s University.

“Without the support of the Foundation I do not believe I would be where I am today in my athletics career.”
