Nigeria's Ogbadu elected Vice President of ICGEB
The Director-General of the National Biotechnol ogy Development Agen cy (NABDA), Professor
Lucy J. Ogbadu has been elected the new Vice President of the In ternational Centre for Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnolo gy (ICGEB).
Mrs Ogbadu who is the Ni gerian representative on the board of Governors for the In ternational
Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnol ogy was unanimously elected while Mr. Viktor
Smirnov of Russia emerged as President.
A statement by the Head, Communication & Protocol Unit, NABDA, Ndefo Ifeoma C said the
elections took place at the headquarters of ICGEB on Wednesday 17th May, 2017, in Trieste,

The election became neces sary when the outgoing presi dent, Prof Hamdy Abdel Aziz Moursy
from Egypt announced his desire to step down after the end of the 2017 session, hav ing served
as president for sev enteen consecutive years, the statement explained.
In a meeting attended by more than 90 participants from more than 40 members states of the
ICGEB as well as represen tatives from the European com mission and multilateral organ isations
like COMSAT, FAO, TWAS, UNIDO and WHO, Prof. Ogbadu was nominated for the Vice -President
posi tion by the delegate from Slo venia, Prof Komel and sub sequently by other delegates from
Costa Rica, South Afri ca, Cote d’Ivoire, India, Sudan, Kuwait and Algeria. Her elec tion was
unanimously upheld by the board in the absence of any other nomination.
The ICGEB is an internation al, nonpro�t research organi zation. Established as a special project
of UNIDO, it became fully autonomous in 1994 and now counts over 60 Member states.
It provides a scienti�c and educational environment of the highest standard and con ducts
innovative research in life sciences for the bene�t of de veloping countries. It strength ens the
research capability of its Members through training and funding programmes and ad visory
services and represents a comprehensive approach to promoting biotechnology in ternationally.
The Centre is dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and bio -
technology and holds out the prospect of advancing knowl edge and applying the latest
techniques in the �elds of: bio medicine, crop improvement, environmental Protection/re -
mediation, biopharmaceuticals and bio pesticide production.
ICGEB has three major com ponents: Trieste-Italy, New Delhi-India and Cape Town- South Africa
with the Centres forming an interactive net work with a�liated centres in ICGEB Member States.
IC GEB is part of the United Na tions System.
