Wentworth ParkSaturday

21 January First 4 : Race 1

$10,000

Last Sunday, Mystic Apple again decorated himself in glory when he took out the 520 metres Cranbourne Cup, having recently annexed the Sale Cup. Val Awramenko’s fine chaser led from go to whoa in the Group 2 race, recording a new PB 30.39.

MYSTIC APPLE picked up his second Victorian pro-vincial ‘black type’ race with an all the way win in the Group 2 Waverley Party Hire Cranbourne Cup final run over 520 metres last Sunday night.

In a very wide-open affair, Mystic Apple, the recent Group 1 Sale Cup winner, was third pick on the TAB with punters at $5.10 from his awkward draw of four.

At $3.50, the favourite for the $40,000 to the winner event was fastest qualifier, Strong Intention, who exited the two trap.

Second pick was Lektra Jay from box eight at $4.30, while his kennelmate, Dyna Steal was next in commission at $5.70 from the three alley, with the red vested Proven Mayhem fifth in the market at $8.10.

The remaining trio were Lektra Johnson at $15.10, Knocka Knows All at $16.60 and recent Laurels runner up, Take Me Home the outsider at $23.10. With numerous chasers in the event having similar racing styles, the start was possibly going to be the most important issue for many runners, and after the race commenced late, it was a fairly even start that saw Dyna Steal get his head in front over Mystic Apple, while the four widest dogs were in a line slightly behind the lead-ers. DON CHENDO stepped up to the 600 metres to tackle heat one of the Topcat Video Grade 5 and had little trouble in leading throughout to score in Best Of Night 34.35.

After lining up in box five as favourite at $1.90, the Len Ketelaar trained chaser came out running and led easily them around to the post the first time in 8.90 with four lengths on Bathilda Bagshot and a length to Barry Blowout.

Don Chendo made his way around to the second marker in 21.88 well in con-trol, with a six lengths lead on Barry Blow-out, who’d just overtaken Bathilda Bag-shot.

Don Chendo was never in any dan-ger and made his way to the Judge five and three quarter lengths clear of Barry Blowout ($7.30), with Fyna Bale ($7.20) three lengths back away third.

Don Chino, a son of Where’s Pedro and Kilby Supreme, owned by Joy Davis, has now scored in 19 of his 53 starts. Peggy did PEGGY MAY took the 525 metres time honours by running 30.07 to score a strong win in the Penny Wise Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Rated on top at $2.40 out of box three for her first run on the track, the daughter of Royal Riddle and Trinity County won the jump but was headed by Whispering Wind, who led narrowly to the first mark in 5.03, with Peggy May second and two lengths to Pedro’s Thunder.

Whispering Wind was still the pilot at the far corner, passing in 17.80, with Peggy May a length and a half down and a similar margin to Pedro’s Thunder.

Peggy May put it into top gear off the back to hit the front around the final turn and went on and score by two lengths over Whispering Wind ($5.30), with a

neck to third placed Pedro’s Thunder ($18.70).

Peggy May is trained by Jason Thompson for Casie O’Neil, and at her 33rd start, this was her 20th win. On a good note PUNTERS ended the night on a good note when Daintree Atom took out the supermanatstud.com Grade 5 over 525 metres in 30.34 as the popular elect at $2.50. Coming from box two, the Lauren Gorman trained chaser left the traps run-ning and led down to the first mark in 5.16 with a length on Borough Boof on the outside and Spence’s Boy third, handily placed on the fence.

Daintree Atom had the speed on around to the back and when he passed the second checkpoint in 18.10 his lead was nearly two lengths on Spence’s Boy, and they had four lengths on railer, Grey-synd Nitro alongside Borough Boof.

Daintree Atom stuck to the task at hand and did it powerfully to the post, beating Spence’s Boy ($21.20) by four and three quarter lengths, with Hansli Bale ($10.60) collecting third money, two lengths in arrears.

Daintree Atom has now started 25 times with this being his fifth win, whilst on the track it was his first victory at his fifth attempt.

A black son of Paddy’s Flame and Daintree Lady, he is owned by Gary Joske. Bales tales FOUR Paul Wheeler owned ‘Bale’ chas-ers scored, and Imani Bale was the first of those when she ran 30.54 to take out the Radio Sport National Grade 5 over 525 metres.

The daughter of Droopys Maldini and

Kumar Bale came from box seven at $9.00 to score by three and a quarter lengths over Silvias Flame ($3.50 fav), with Sunset Jet ($11.70) a length back in third spot.

Imani Bale is trained by Steve Collins, who combined with Paul again to score with Darlin Bale in the AWM Electri-cal Grade 5 over 525 metres.

Sent to box five at $23.10, the daugh-ter of Go Wild Teddy and Marzeena Bale ran 30.32 to defeat Foot Tapper ($3.80) by a neck, with Katie Merry ($3.00 fav) two and a half lengths further afield.

The Mark Delbridge trained Elmira

Bale was leg three and she returned 34.60 to take out heat two of the Lepine Funerals Grade 5 over 600 metres.

Mark also scored with Arvo’s Vixen for the Arvo’s Syndicate after she ran the new PB of 30.38 when successful in the Moonee Ponds Bowling Club Grade 5 over 525 metres.

Drawn in box five as favourite at $3.20, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Serene Bale beat Jet Blast ($8.20) by five and a quarter lengths, with Matlock ($44.30) the next one in, a length and three quarters away.

The Andrea Dailly trained Defrim

Bale was Paul’s fourth leg, registering 34.48 to score in heat four of the Geo-technical Laboratories Grade 5 over 600 metres.

Sent to box seven as favourite at $1.70, the son of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale bolted in by nine and a quarter lengths over Fantasia ($7.00), with a half head to third placed Lasting Effect ($3.70).

Andrea scored in the previous race, the Happy Birthday Emily Mixed 3rd/4th Grade over 525 metres when the Bren-dan Wheeler owned Dyna Bert recorded 30.20 to score. - Darryl Embling

Victorian Government’s Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sal Perna, gets a close look at how experienced steward, Peter Chitty oversees the boxing of greyhounds at Beckley Park.

Geelong Greyhound Racing Club’s Chairman, Maurie Blair welcomes Sal Perna to Beckley Park’s dual grey-hound circuit.

TOP Queensland trainer, Bob Giltinan knows a career highlight when he spots one.

Sometimes Bob’s owners may not be aware of such glory, so Bob has to give them a gentle reminder.

That’s what happened twice when promising young bitch, Deutronium won her first two races.

Deutronium is raced by a syn-dicate headed by Mick and Craig Hardy.

The boys are Bob’s cousins and live in Sydney.

Late last year Mick and Craig had a pretty good high in racing when the three year-old gelding they bred, Doctor Doom won the Group 1 Champion Stakes at Randwick.

Third placegetter, Sangster made the form look even better when he went to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival and won the Group 1 VRC Derby.

Bob was well aware of Mick and Craig’s glee at winning such a prestigious race.

So when Deutronium landed a Maiden victory at Albion Park late in December, Bob wasted no time sending a congratulatory text to his cousins.

It said something along the lines that he was sure the race winning photo of Doctor Doom would be taken down from the walls of their home and be re-placed by Deutronium’s win.

Last Thursday night at Albion Park Bob had his mobile ready to fire off yet another text message to his cousins.

Mick, Craig and their mate, Dick share in the ownership of Deutronium (Made To Size - Nice Portrait), who led throughout to win a 520 metres Novice at Al-bion Park. “When Deutronium won a Maiden, I sent Mick and Craig a text message that Doctor Doom’s Champion Stakes picture would have to come off the wall and be replaced by this bitch’s winning photo,” said Bob.

“They liked it, but Doctor Doom is still on the wall.”

Mick and Craig are regular owners with Bob’s kennel and had raced the very promising, but luckless, At The Cantina from Nice Portrait’s Where’s Pedro litter.

“He was as fast as any dog

I’ve had, but was a poor box dog,” said Bob.

Deutronium had none of those problems at Albion Park last Thursday night when she sped to the front at boxrise and led throughout.

She scored by five lengths over Satan Saddle, with three quarters of a length to third placed Ruby Jones.

She ran 30.43 and it was her second win in six starts and she has run three placings.

Mick and Craig Hardy bred Doctor Doom and own his dam, Orcym.

Made to Fly BOX MANNERS maketh the greyhound, just ask leading trainer, Sandra Hunt.

Sandra says there are “two” versions of her extra smart galloper, Made To Fly.

There is the calm and col-lected version at her Churchable property and at the local trial tracks.

Then there is the racetrack version that screams.

Made To Fly (Made To Size -

Solid Skye) rattled home to win a 520 metres Fifth Grade at Albion Park last Thursday night in 30.32, scoring by two and three-quarter lengths over Mini Pod, with a neck to In And Under third.

Made To Fly has always been a nightmare for Sandra in the starting boxes.

“She has always played up in the boxes,” she said.

“But at home and at any of the trial tracks around home she does nothing wrong. She has now started screaming when she gets into the boxes.”

Sandra has always had a huge opinion of the bitch but admits “she keeps promising a lot” but only occasionally delivers.

Made To Fly took her record to 10 wins and 15 placings in 40 starts.

“You’d reckon by 40 starts she would start to get it,” said Sandra.

Immediate plans are to run this week in the 520 metres graded final and then step Made To Fly up to 600 metres.

“We were only talking about it today,” said Sandra of a discus-sion between she and partner, Ray Russell.

The bitch has always been a powerful finisher but her box manners usually makes her give start to most of her rivals.

In 600 metres races that might be different.

RACING QUEENSLAND sensibly relaxed the scratching rule during the extreme heat in the south-east of the state just over a week ago.

Trainers who had to travel an hour or more to a race meeting were allowed to scratch their greyhounds without penalty.

While most motor vehicles have air conditioning, most trailers don’t.

For Albion Park’s twilight card on Wednesday of last week, the first meeting to have the relaxation in place, connections of eight grey-hounds opted to scratch without pen-alty.

But the fields weren’t decimated, as there were reserve runners gain-ing starts in most events where scratchings occurred.

RQ does not have a heat policy as such, as in Victoria and South Australia.

Whilst Queensland might be known as the “Sunshine State”, along the coast we rarely experience the extremes that occur in Victoria and South Australia of temperatures rising to above 40°.

It happens in central and western Queensland, but rarely along the coast, where the state’s seven grey-hound tracks are located.

Deputy Chair of Stewards, Gail Thorsby says RQ is in the process of putting together a heat policy.

“At the end of the day, it’s mostly about commonsense anyway, and we will address the matter in that way,” she said.

Whilst the move to allow heat-affected greyhounds to be scratched

without penalty was very sensible, something which seems ridiculous to me is the starting time of Queen-sland’s so-called twilight meetings.

Such meetings at Ipswich and Albion Park commence between 2.35pm and 3.10pm.

That’s still the heat of the day at this time of the year.

The race times are set by Sky Channel in conjunction with Produc-tCo, which is a liason body between the control bodies and the TAB.

Ipswich Manager, Merv Page says a 5 o’çlock start would make a lot more sense, or better still, night racing.

But requests to Sky for the re-introduction of Saturday night meet-ings at Ipswich have fallen on deaf ears.

“We would be happy to have Saturday night racing and be tele-vised on the Sky 2 channel only, but we have been told there is no spot for us,” Page said.

I’m with Page on the starting times.

Whether it’s Ipswich or Albion Park, starting twilight racing in a cooler timeslot would be a sensible move.

Gail Thorsby agrees that Queen-sland twilight meetings should start

later and says it’s a matter for Pro-ductCo. Ladies recognised THERE WILL BE a new award an-nounced at the upcoming Queen-sland Greyhound Of The Year dinner.

It’s called ‘Women in racing’ and will acknowledge significant achieve-ments of females in the sport.

I was a member of the selection panel and am sworn to secrecy.

What I can reveal though is that the inaugural winner’s name was raised right at the start of discussions and she was a unanimous choice amongst the nine member panel.

That’s it, no more hints. Well, that wasn’t really a hint

anyway, was it? A category which has been going

since 1994 is the Top Simbi Award, for a person, group or greyhound who creates significant positive publicity for the sport.

It’s not given every year, only if there is deemed to be a worthy candi-date.

Winners have been: 1994 More-ton Bay Star, 1995 Flying Amy, 1996 Jurassic Vapour, 1997 Nads, 1999 Just the Best, 2003 Elite State, 2004 Surf Lorian, 2006 Fred Basset, 2007 Greyhound Adoption Program, 2008 Reg Kay and 2009 Tony Brett.

There is a winner for 2011 and I’m sworn to secrecy on that one too!

FRESH is best… just ask Christina Apap. Christina landed a winning double at Albion Park last Thurs-day night with brilliant speedster, Spindle and the top grade sprint bitch, Isadel, who is now up to 600 metres racing.

Spindle can run record break-ing first sections, but in recent months that speed has been dimmed a fraction by constant racing.

That’s why Christina opted to give Spindle a slight freshen-up recently, and last Thursday she was back reeling-off a 5.70 first section, which set up her victory.

The daughter of Just The Best and Tad Smarter ran 30.44 to score by a length and a quarter over Mr. Devianna, with two and three-quarter lengths to Diamond Spar-kles third.

It was Spindle’s 10th win in 30 starts and she has been placed 10 times.

Christina, who trains the bitch for a syndicate that includes her parents, Tony and Jane, said Spin-dle appreciated the week off rac-ing.

“Her early pace is her best attribute, said Christina. “She ran 5.70 to the first mark but she can go quicker than that. That’s why we missed racing her last week.

“She was not beginning as well as she can, but she was get-ting more strength at the finish.”

Christina said Spindle would run in this week’s Fifth Grade final and then may have a longer break.

Spindle, perfectly boxed in the eight, began brilliantly last Thurs-day night, and even though she was pressured by the runner-up,

she never looked likely to be beaten.

The bitch has already been a finalist in a number of feature races, including the Vince Curry Maiden.

Christina landed a winning double when kennel star, Isadel proved too strong for a 600 metres Fifth Grade field in 35.36.

The daughter of Surf Lorian and Texan Beauty was burnt-off early by top grade sprinter, Magic Control, who was on debut over

the distance. But she had his measure at the

home turn and raced away to win by two and a half lengths.

Boot Camp finished on for second, a half head over a gallant Magic Control.

Isadel has an impressive record of 20 wins in 46 starts, whilst her 600 metres record is three wins and four placings in seven starts. “She’s three and a half and her real aim now is as a brood bitch,” said Christina. - David Brasch

By annexing a 600 metres Fifth Grade in 35.36, top racer, Isadel made it a double on the night for Christine Apap and partner, Gary.

FOUR HEATS of the Group 3 SA Sprint Championship were run at Angle Park last Thursday night, with the first two run-ners past the post making their way through to the final.

KALDEN AURORA bounced back to her winning best for trainer, Troy Murray when she took out heat one in great style.

A $3.50 chance drawn out wide in the eight, Kalden Aurora jumped safely and mustered speed out deep on the track to hold the early lead over Goosebumps ($3.00 fav) through the first turn. Slipping away from Goosebumps in the back straight, Kalden Aurora was setting a hot pace and reached the top turn with a three lengths break. Rounding the final bend with her lead whittled back to a length, Kalden Aurora showed great heart to score.

Although the powerful chaser, Goosebumps tried valiantly, the daughter of Premier Fantasy and Abbadale Affair crossed the line three quarters of a length ahead in Best Of Night 29.82, while Midget Farrelly wound up third.

JOKEN KIHAEL continued his solid form for trainer, Petar Jovanovic when he made a last ditch effort to take out heat two from Victa Troy. Nicely drawn in box one and starting at $3.60 behind race favourite, Crazy Heart ($3.00), Joken Kihael jumped fast and hugged the rail to hold the early lead over Victa Troy and Crazy Heart through the first turn. Dropping back to second behind Victa Troy in the back straight, Joken Kihael lost some ground and reached the top turn three lengths adrift of the leader. Closing to be within two lengths of the leader through the final bend, Joken Kihael finished with giant strides to collar Victa Troy in the shadows of the post. The son of Elite State and Helwa scored by a head to Victa Troy in 30.03, with Dyna Chayne running another good race to grab third place.

BANDANNA LAD gave trainer, Troy

Murray his second runner through to the final when he won heat three. Poorly drawn in box seven and start-ing at big odds of $17.00 behind race favourite and kennelmate, Aston Thomas ($2.50), Bandanna Lad jumped slowly and was checked soon after the start to be languishing at the tail end through the first turn, where Agent Oso was in charge. Getting a nice run through to fourth along the back straight, Bandanna Lad continued to work his way into the picture and reached the top turn third, four lengths behind Agent Oso up front. Still making ground through the final bend and joining Led Zeppelin upon straightening for the run-home, Bandanna Lad finished too well. to edge clear over the closing stages. The son of Pure Octane and Valeri’s Purse edged out Led Zeppelin to score by three quarters of a length in 30.29, with Hannah McLaren making late ground in third place.

RATTLE GUN belied his big odds for trainer, Bob Isaacson and showed great heart to land the final round. The bookies hope at $16.00 from box three behind race favourite, Kalden May-hem ($3.00 fav), Rattle Gun dipped as he came out of the boxes but still recovered and showed enough pace to hold the early lead over Henry Mallet and Burning Daylight through the first turn. Showing the way by a length over Henry Mallet in the back straight, Rattle Gun edged away and arrived at the top turn almost three lengths clear. Rounding the final bend with a re-

duced lead, Rattle Gun dug deep in the home straight and fended-off Henry Mal-let over the closing stages. A son of Pure Octane and Glen Ab-bey Kate, he coated past the post one and a quarter lengths ahead of Henry Mallet in a career best time of 30.03, with Kalden Mayhem finishing with a wet sail in third place. No joking JOKEN KIHAEL received an added bo-nus on top of his Group 3 SA Sprint Championship heat win last week when he was named as the winner of the SA Run of the Month for December. Trained by Petar Jovanovic, Joken Kihael received the award for a an all the way win at Angle Park on December 15 when he ran best of night and career best time of 29.66 to annex a Grade 6 event by 7 ¼ lengths. Sparingly raced due to a bad injury which had seen him sidelined for almost four months from the middle of last year, Joken Kihael has a strong record of 8 wins and 8 placings from 30 starts. Plenty of heart CRAZY HEART had no luck in last week’s heats of the Group 3 SA Sprint Championship but gained some consola-tion by being named the SA Greyhound of the Month for December. Trained by Bruce Lellmann in the Riverland, Crazy Heart had four starts during December for three wins and a second, with her major achievement be-ing a win in the Christmas Sprint at Angle Park, clocking 29.99. Racing in arguably the best form of her life, Crazy Heart’s record stands at 48 starts for 20 wins and 17 placings. The last chaser to take out a Grey-hound of the Month Award for the 2011 year, Crazy Heart joins Satanic Cash, Goosebumps, Brahma Boy, Dark Duo, Led Zeppelin, Hannah McLaren, and Kalden Aurora as chasers to win at least one monthly title during 2011.

Petroni no phony KALDEN PETRONI racked- up a training treble for trainer, Troy Murray at Angle Park last Thursday nightwhen she took out the Philmac P/L Free For All over 731 metres. Starting the red hot $1.50 elect after competing at Wentworth Park at her pre-vious start, Kalden Petroni sported the pink vest and began safely before muster-ing into second place through the first turn, where Loud Mouse showed the way.

Camped on the leader’s heels with a lap to run, Kalden Petroni raced to the front passing the catching pen and kicked away in the back straight to reach the top turn with a four lengths break over Long Gully Arch. Rounding the final bend still well clear, the daughter of Surf Lorian and Abbadale Gold drew right away over the concluding stages, bolting in by eight lengths to Long Gully Arch in a new per-sonal best 43.46, with Loud Mouse tiring into third place.

BRIGHTON TRAINER, Mick Stringer was a big fan of South Australian owned and trained dog, Scull Murphy, so when that dog was retired to stud he was keen to breed a litter by him with his former smart bitch, Painted Shaza. The mating was successful and it produced a big litter with an even mix of dogs and bitches. Painted Amigo is a dog from the litter and he looks set for a bright future. Painted Amigo scored an all the way win in the final if the O'Driscoll Coaches Series over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night. It was his fourth win from only 11 starts, although his time for the journey of 26.42 was a bit south of his best of 26.14 that he set a week earlier in a heat. Painted Amigo ($5.10) showed good early speed, and after a battle with the pack half-way to the top turn, he forged clear and had a four lengths break turning for home. He started to feel the pinch close to the line and had only a length to spare over the fast-finishing Bell Haven, with Three Tradies making up a lot of ground on the rail to grab third place, two lengths away, just in advance of his kennelmate Bo Sheen. Stringer’s other O'Driscoll Coaches

Series finalist was Ryno Rules, who started the equal favourite at $2.70 with runner-up, Bell Haven from the Ted Med-hurst kennel. Ryno Rules began only fairly from box one but booted up to join the leaders at the 340 metres boxes but got chopped out and spat out the back, which ended his chances. Bell Haven (Head Bound – It’s A She) has a bright future, as evidenced by her three wins from only seven starts. She was closing on the winner over the final stages and would have won in a few more bounds. Could be the best WHILST Painted Amigo delivered the goods in the series final for Grade 5 per-formers, trainer Mick Stringer was more impressed with the performance of his less experienced litter brother, Painted

Patches, who won the last race on the 10-event card. Painted Patches produced a sensa-tional run to win a Grade 5 by almost 13 lengths and ran the 461 metres in a slick 25.93 that was clearly the best of the night. It was only the fifth start for Painted Patches' and it was his second win. “I've thought all along that if this dog (Painted Patches) put it all together there’s not a dog in the state that could beat him,” Stringer said. “He’s not consistent, but I’m hoping that will come with time.” “Once he gets a real feel for racing he has the potential to go to the next level,” he said. Painted Patches was Stringer’s pick of the litter of six and he said some time back that he thought the dog would make the grade. “When the pups from this litter were about four months-old, Patches was the one that stood out to me,” he said. Painted Shaza was a terrific on the racetrack for Stringer and has also proven her worth as a brood bitch. Amigo and Patches are from her first litter to Scull Murphy. after which Stringer loaned her to his friend. Dave Burnett. who mated her with Premier Fantasy that produced a litter of four. She had three pups from her third litter (by Mugambo) that was bred by Stringer. and Painted Shaza is in pup to Bit Chilli and is due to drop at the end of the month. “I’ve been very lucky so far with Shaza because all the pups seem to have her fantastic temperament,” Stringer said. Nonchalant Harry IF EVER there was a dog to reach Invita-tion grade without raising a ripple it must be Harry’s Pick.

Harry’s Pick was as game as they

come in getting up in the last bound to win the Viv Rowe Invitation at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last week.

The Len Howard trained dog is no world beater, in fact he has never shown enough to suggest he could be anything but a grinder.

“Describing Harry’s Pick as a grinder is spot-on,” Howard said. “I liken this dog to a footballer who plays in the back pocket… he gets two or three kicks a game but he is reliable and does the best he can every time he goes out,” he said,'

Harry’s Pick won two races in suc-cession last year, but when stepped up into better grades he ran into some handy performers and had to settle for being an also-ran.

“In Hobart. if they are running a lot better than 26.40 for the 461 metres. then he’ll finish midfield, but if they’re not going that quick he’s a contender.”

Harry’s Pick is owned by Mick Ed-wards, who has been one of Howard’s long-time friends and kennel clients.

Edwards, who has not been in the best of health these past months, always perseveres with dogs that have a crack, and Harry’s Pick definitely falls into that category. Harry’s Pick has started 33 times for six wins and 13 minor placings, earning over $11,000 in stakes.

Ukulele back in tune LIGHTLY RACED DOG, Ukulele Man made amends for notching a string of minor placings when he scored a convinc-ing win in a Grade 5 event over 461 me-tres at Tattersall’s Park last Thursday night. The Leigh Wood trained dog was having only his second outing on the Hobart track and showed his liking for the U-bend circuit. Ukulele Man ($5.20) began well from box six to he part of a line of seven 100 metres into the race before he and the favourite, Regent Reign ($2.00) emerged from the pack. Ukulele Man gained the upper hand and sped clear, but Regent Reign kept coming, although in the straight Regent Reign appeared to lose concentration and ran into the back of the leader. Wood’s dog went on to score by three quarters of a length to Regent Reign, with Prenup two and a half lengths away third. Ukulele Man took his career win re-cord to three from 20 starts, but he can improve on that in the coming weeks if he continues to display the box manners that helped him to notch this most recent win. Ukulele Man ran the 461 metres trip in 26.66 following splits of 5.32 and 11.45.

Harry's Pick (5) levels-up with Regent Typhoon then went on to win the Viv Rowe Invitation in Hobart, recording 26.40 Len Howard.

Painted Amigo holds out a late lunge by Bell Haven and Three Tradies to snare the O'Driscoll Coaches Series final in 26.43 last Thursday night.

Mystic Apple had the superior pace and broke clear, leading down to the first mark in 5.50.

The dog that defeated him in the McKenna Memorial, Strong Intention had driven through on the rail to be a length off second, with Dyna Steal between runners

third and Lektra Jay posted wide was trying to improve.

Mystic Apple had the speed on out of the straight but he had Strong Intention on his hammer, two lengths down, and as they raced to the far turn they’d put over three lengths on Proven May-hem heading the rest.

Going past the second check-point in 21.45 it was really a race in two, with Mystic Apple two lengths ahead of Strong Intention, and both chasers are extremely strong at the end of a race, so the others looked to have a forlorn task.

Up to the home turn it was Mystic Apple racing a couple of dogs away from the fence round-ing the bend, with Strong Intention taking the shortest route, while three lengths back Proven May-hem had drifted wide, with Lektra Jay coming through on the inside.

But when they flattened out for the run-in it was Mystic Apple showing all of his grit and actually drew away to score by two and three quarter lengths in 30.39.

Strong Intention was valiant in defeat and picked up second money by a length to the fast fin-ishing Lektra Jay, who got the minor end of the prize after a lengthy photo.

Proven Mayhem certainly wasn’t disgraced with her fourth, and then follows Lektra Johnson, Knocka Knows All, Dyna Steal and Take Me Home whipped them in.

Mystic Apple is a son of Hal-lucinate and Spiral Siyan, whose

CV shows 26 wins and 12 placings from 57 starts for a bank balance that’s is now a very healthy $231,260.

The brindle galloper is owned and trained at Waurn Ponds by Val Awramenko, who told us, “I was fairly confident that he’d go well.”

“Last week when I got him out of the kennel for his race he was puffing and panting like crazy, so I knew something was up.”

“He was as cool as a cucumber when I got him out this week. I thought he’d be really hard to beat.”

“When he’s right and he leads they just don’t run him down.”

“And when he got to the front here, I wasn’t worried; I knew they wouldn’t catch him and he’s very strong.”

I asked Val what was on the agenda.

“I’m taking him to Perth for the Cup.”

“He’s tickled pink at the mo-ment, so I’m taking him over. I think he’s got to be a good chance in a race like that and if he jumps, well!”

“He runs 5.02 for the first split on both city tracks here, and if you can run that, you can win any-thing.”

“He’s now got a Group 1 and a Group 2, and I’m hoping he can add another one; it’d be nice.”

- Darryl Embling

An array of fans and officials surrounded Val Awramenko and 2012 Cranbourne Cup winner, Mystic Apple after he’d led all the way to win the 38th running of the now Group 2 event in a new PB 30.39.

WELL-KNOWN owners, Martin and Fiona Hallinan were expecting a ma-jor slice of the prize from the Globe Memorial Plate final at Wentworth Park last Saturday night, mainly due to the efforts of their star stayer, Zip-ping Lad.

However, the weather gods played a part in the first instance and then luck in running contributed to their second stringer, Crafty Lady causing an upset by collecting the $40,000 first prize. At just her 14th race start, Crafty Lady proved too strong in the inci-dent-packed event over the gruelling 720 metres journey. When the lids opened Zipping Lad from box three broke the line quickly and went to the front round-ing the first bend.

The son of Malfoy was rolling along nicely in the straight the first time, but on the wet surface many good judges knew he would struggle over the concluding stages.

Sitting on his hammer was He’s My Future, and leaving the straight making a run along the fence was the Victorian, Echelon. Off the top bend Zipping Lad was still leading but the barnstormers were coming, with He’s My Future looming large and also Echelon, who was swooping home fast.

Just when Echelon was being hailed the winner he ran into the back of Zipping Lad and was forced deep on the track.

Minding her own business Crafty Lady seized on the moment and surged forward, with He’s My Future to be alongside Zipping Lad nearing the home corner. Crafty Lady broke clear in the straight, and despite some late charges, was able to hold on and de-feat He’s My Future by one and a half lengths in 43.19, with the desperately unlucky Echelon a head away third. Crafty Lady is by Bit Chili out of Valeri’s Purse, prepared in Victoria by Wayne Vassallo, and to date has now nine wins with one placing.

He’s My Future (Hallucinate x Just Dazzle Em), trained by Carolyn Reinke, has had 26 career starts for 10 wins and five placings, whilst Echelon (Mogambo x Off Springer) has produced 13 wins and 14 placings from 37 career starts for trainer, Craig Traherne.

On a golden road THE COUNTDOWN began for the 2012 Golden Easter Egg, which starts in just 10 weeks time at Wentworth Park.

For the connections of Oaks Road, who brilliantly won the Mul-tiquip Bob Payne Summer Sprint final last weekend, the next 10 weeks can’t come quick enough. After showing so much ability earlier in his career, Oaks Road had not always come right up to Group 1 expectations.

However, over the past three weeks this 30kg black chaser has stepped forward and is showing the form that his connections always be-lieved would come out in the big races. Oaks Road colleted the $40,000 first prize for this effort and is show-ing the necessary quick pace to get away from early bother and let his natural ability do the talking. In what was one of the best fields assembled for a long time at the Glebe venue, the excitement on-track was building as the runners arrived at the 520 metres start.

The only downside was the rain had rolled in just as the meeting got

underway and by this final, the sur-face was very heavy and the outside drawn contingent would have their work cut out. When the lids opened, best served was Undisputed Dos from box one, with Fancy Dean out of box four well into stride.

Exiting box five, Oaks Road also stepped well and then showed great acceleration to surge to the front by the first corner.

At that point the race was as good as over. Oaks Road broke clear down the back, with Fancy Dean slotting into second spot and trying valiantly to rein-in the leader but it was always going to be a fruitless task. Turning for home the Oaks Road supporters were in full song and the son of Spiral Nikita kept going over the concluding stages, defeating Fancy Dean by four lengths, with Young Snozz again running on stoutly to take third prize, a further three and three quarter lengths away. On a very damp surface, the time recorded was 30.28, and the effect of the rain could be seen as Oaks Road had clocked 29.64 seven days earlier. Oaks Road (x Leprechaun Pace), raced by Ed Kingswell and trained by Mark Gatt, has contested 35 races for 12 wins and 15 placings, earning al-most $150,000.

Fancy Dean (Where’s Pedro x Sweet Fancy), trained by Wally Luti-ger, from 47 career starts has re-corded 22 wins and 19 placings, whilst the Jason Mackay prepared Young Snozz (Collision x Special Osti) has faced the starter 27 times, gathering eight wins and 14 placings.

Taking centre stage after the Group 2 Globe Memorial was the winner, Crafty Lady, with trainer, Wayne Vassallo’s kennel handler, Karen Pitt. They were flanked by placegetters He’s My Future (4) and Echelon (8), along with a host of friends and connections intermingled with officials at Wentworth Park last Saturday night. Crafty Lady came from behind and recorded 43.19 for the 720 metres journey.

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT at Wentworth Park, two of the winners took their city tally to three victories, whilst they also clocked an identical winning time that turned out to be the fastest of the night.

Also,, both greyhounds scored their 10th career win.

Sure As, trained by Syd Swain and Wez Da Risk for Pauline Moran scored dominant wins in their respective races after using their customary early speed to ensure a positive result.

Firstly, Sure As stepped out in the 520 metres Globe Memorial Stake and from box one jumped nicely to hold out Cool Gift as they hit the first turn.

Holding the fence, Sure As railed out of the corner in front of Cool Gift and then Kyl’s Me Girl. Sure As slipped right away down the back, with Cool Gift showing no signs of

reining-in the leader, while Kyl’s Me Girl was next, with Double Decoy making ground through the mid-field. Turning for home it was all Sure As, and the son of Bombastic Shiraz kept going powerfully to the line, defeating Kyl’s Me Girl by three and three quarter lengths in30.12, with Double Decoy third, a further two and a half lengths back. Sure As, who is from an October 2009 litter out of Winsome Bluebird, has had 26 career starts for 10 wins and six placings.

Kyl’s Me Girl (Big Daddy Cool x I Love Lucy(. Trained by Adam Wade, has produced seven wins and 14 placings from 37 career starts, whilst the Ruth King prepared Double Decoy (Hallucinate x Charm Forever) has had 38 career starts for seven wins and 14 placings.

WEZ DA RISK had to wait until the

last race on the card to equal the time standard, which in fact equalled her per-sonal best effort at the venue. Showing brilliant speed from the six box, Wez Da Risk easily led, with the inside drawn pair, Czar and I’m Mighty Magic trying to stay in touch.

Wez Da Risk really stepped on the gas down the back and opened a big break, while some jamming behind her allowed the leader to explode away. Wez Da Risk was full of running coming to the corner, and the recent Gos-ford Cup runner-up didn’t have any Prince Diablo chasing her this time. Wez Da Risk was well clear down the running and when the judge called a halt she had eight and a half lengths to spare over Total Sensation, while Emily’s Secret finished third, a further two and a half lengths away. Wez Da Risk is by Run The Risk out of Wez Da Picnic and to date has had 28 career starts with 10 wins and 1placings for owner, Sue Colubriale.

Trained by Leighton Winter, Tota1 Sensation (Pure Octane x Total Fancy) to date the Dubbo chaser has had nine starts for three wins and five placings, whilst Emily’s Secret (True Destiny x Secrets Gift), trained by John Head, has had 10 starts for three wins and three placings.

ANOTHER to come out of Gosford Cup night successfully was the Marie Burton trained Mr. Gazmick, who used the rails box very well to land the Mul-tiquip Stake over 520 metres. When the lids rose Mr. Gazmick was only moderately away, with the centre pair of Chabak and Dozen Matter begin-ning best.

At the first corner the field fanned, which saw the white vested Bonita Ba-nana run to the front, while Mr. Gazmick tracked through nicely. Rolling off the leader’s heels, Mr. Gazmick quickly pounced on the lead and dashed clear into the back. Mr. Gazmick led to the home corner and looked set for a comfortable win.

But then we saw the flashing finish of Dozen Matter, who charged home and ran the winner to a head in 30.22, while Bonita Banana was a further five and a half lengths away third. Mr. Gazmick, by Surf Lorian out of Crazy Gazmick, to date has had 22 ca-reer starts for eight wins and four plac-ings.

Dozen Matter (Pure Octane x Curi Lee), trained by Troy Callaghan, has had 34 career starts for eight wins and six placings, whilst Adam Wade’s Bonita Banana (Big Daddy Cool x Scar Crash) from 21 starts has registered three wins and eight placings.

- Ron Arnold

Bob Payne Summer Sprint saw Mark Gatt’s star boarder, Oaks Road finally break through for a major victory. Raced by Eddy Kingswell, the gallant chaser clocked 30.28 to land the Group 2 event.

A STRONG FIELD assembled on Friday for the running of WA’s first feature final of the year, the $37,500 Group 3 Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup over 405 metres.

Punters saw it as a race in three, with youngsters Al’s Special just holding favouritism at $3.40 over Give And Take ($3.60), with experi-enced campaigner, Marbro Man at $3.90. The lids flew back and the field left in an even line before Mungo Park dressed in yellow vest mustered

well to put her nose in front. Passing the 302 metres boxes the

Christine Robartson trained Give And Take maximised the benefit of the inside draw, holding Mungo Park out and slipping to half length lead, with Al’s Special getting into third spot after being tightened at boxrise. Give And Take surged away through the turn, opening a three lengths break on Mungo Park and Al’s Special, with Marbro moving into a clear fourth.

Approaching the home turn the chasing duo collided as Al’s Special looked to get off the rail, allowing the leader to turn for home with an unas-sailable four lengths break. Give And Take powered to the judge strongly, saluting by four lengths over Mungo Park, with a fur-ther length and a half to Al’s Special, who fended-off Marbro Man for third.

It was yet another big race suc-cess for the Robartsons, who cer-tainly enjoy their visits back to West-ern Australia. The $25,000 first prize boosted Give And Take’s earnings to nearly $33,000.

This pacy younger has improved on the clock at all four Mandurah runs, and her winning run of 22.29 eclipsed the previous race record set by Back Tonight in 2007, which had

stood as the track record until only recently.

The current track record of 22.23 is held by Uno Reltub who, in the next race, demolished a 490 metres Free To All field, winning in 27.25 and going within a length of also se-curing the longer sprint record. Give And Take is by the sensa-tional sprinter, El Galo out of a classy bitch, Swelligant, who had a short but impressive career.

The daughter of Bob’s One and Vividity took out a semi-final of the Vince Curry Maiden at Ipswich in a sizzling 30.69 at her second race start.

Several of her littermates had successful race careers in WA, in-cluding Kalden Rose, Sheriff Austin and Showground Ronda. Wednesday Snippets SHAUN MILLER and Terry Er-enshaw have enjoyed some great suc-cess with classy chasers Blue Goose and Zini’s Gump.

In qualifying trials last Wednes-day the duo unleashed City Rumble, who scorched around headquarters to win a 530 metres qualifying trial in 30.55, clocking a very slick 5.41 back section.

He debuts in Race 2 this Wednes-day (January 18). THERE WERE THREE city Maidens conducted on Wednesday night, with Graham Berry’s Frantic Fusion the fastest at 30.73.

A daughter of Surf Lorian and Fortified Times, she is a full sister of former top class performer, Best Of Times.

Frantic Fusion began brilliantly in 5.73 then held off the late charge of Whispering Bazza to score by a length.

Man Dime ran a blis-tering 5.68 opening stanza to set up his Maiden win when on debut for Sean Kavanagh, clocking 30.91. He is out of Claire Bird, a sister to the mar-vellous Twain and Lara Flynn, who were trained by Jimmy Lee in WA. One month and one day after the horrific Queensland floods, Gran-tham Girl (Collide - Offi-ciate) took out the final Maiden in 31.06. The bitch was donated for auction by NSW breeder, Mark Scholes,

who also provided other pups for the massive fundraiser that was spear-headed by Anthony Jeffress and con-ducted on the greyhound-data.com website last January.

Grantham Girl is trained and part-owned by Dan Biddle, who has strong connections to the devastated Lockyer Valley region.

Miata works hard PUNTERS who took the long odds-on about Miata on Saturday got a big scare on Saturday night when the rising star was away sluggishly be-fore running into traffic and finding herself second last after just a few metres.

Meanwhile, the Keith Harding trained Pakenham Lass was relishing the unusual role as pacesetter at her second try over the journey. They fanned wide into the home run the first time, allowing Miata to take closer order.

Pakenham Lass ran a 15.66 sec-tional to lead McQueen by two lengths with a lap to travel, whilst Miata was fourth, nearly 10 lengths off the pace. As they passed the release point the favourite had made her way past Mortal Combat and was within six lengths of the leader.

Leaving the back in 29.84, Pakenham Lass had a three lengths break over Miata, who had continued her rails run to level-up with McQueen. The final turn saw Paul Stuart’s bitch hug the rail and emerge into the home straight with a two lengths break over the tiring early leaders.

With McQueen and Pakenham Lass engaging in a bumping duel in the straight, Miata burst clear and won by 10 lengths in 41.71, seven lengths off the time standard she set the previous week.

Whilst the majority of her oppo-nents in the $18,000 Distance Gift were moderate chasers, the strength in which she saw the race out was impressive.

Miata ran home in 11.70, demon-strating that she can probably perform at either end of a race, depending on how it is run. After the race Paul Stuart said, “She did it hard tonight; she is a 100% chaser.”

“I haven’t seen the replay as yet. but I hope that she will come out a bit better than tonight at her next race.”

Stuart is undecided if Miata will

race this Saturday, “I will see how she pulls up in the

morning and if all is spot-on then she will have another run prior to the Gal-axy.”

Stuart also quashed rumours of a half million dollar offer for his kennel star.

“No offers have been made to us; but I would have to consider one that size.” Miata’s record now stands at 19 starts for 16 wins and two placings, earning $64,000 in stakes. The Linda Britton trained Not In Kansas starred in the sprint Free To All, running a sizzling PB of 30.18.

The son of Knocka Norris missed out on the Birthday Cup final field by a nose, and a return to town quickly saw a return to the top dais position. After overcoming a moderate jump Not In Kansas get a clear pas-sage to second, three lengths behind the $4.00 favourite, Hot Irish, in an open betting affair.

A sensational back sectional saw Not In Kansas rail past Hot Irish and open a two lengths break. She was never in danger, slipping away to an impressive and timely five lengths victory, boosting her pros-pects in the upcoming Perth Cup se-ries.

The Greg Smith owned chaser has 12 wins and 9 placings from 24 starts, with earnings exceeding $50,000.

WA

Laurence Torpy

Linda Britton, Dale Evans, Christine Robartson and Kate Smith with Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup winner, Give And Take, who began fast from the four alley and led for the entire 405 metres. A speedster, he ran a race record 22.29 and notched his seventh win from 20 starts at the Peel venue.

Miata puzzled many with her race tactics in last Saturday night’s Distance Gift at Cannington. But after missing the kick badly, Paul Stuart’s top notch racer wound up scoring by nearly 10 lengths, running the 715 metes in 41.71.

A NEW nation-wide government legislation will be introduced from January 30, 2012 which is set to provide security for greyhound owners. This legislation – titled the Personal Properties Security Act [PPSA] 2009 - is designed to protect the interests of owners of personal property when that property is placed in the care of another party. Failure to register an interest in a greyhound with the PPSA could result in other parties, including financial institutions and fellow syndicate members, gaining possession of the greyhound in certain circumstances.

The relationship between an owner and trainer is being captured under the Act, which applies to all three racing codes. Owners are strongly encouraged to register their greyhounds under the PPSA, and can do so by visiting the following link: http://www.ppsr.gov.au/Pages/ppsr.aspx Greyhound Racing Victoria encourages all greyhound participants to take the time to read the Media Release regarding the PPSA on Greyhounds Australasia’s website: www.galtd.org.au to gain a greater understanding of how this legislation relates to greyhound racing.

FOR THE Barnett family of the NSW Hunter Valley, the year has started on a high per medium of Black Stunner, who made it a new year winning double when victorious at Betchoice Gardens on Wednesday, January 11. Following her success at Gosford on Cup night, the daughter of Big Daddy Cool led throughout to claim the All Pro Hospitality Stake over 600 metres. Exiting box three, Black Stunner bounced straight to the front with Dynamic Miss in the pink vest com-ing across and putting pressure on the middle drawn contingents.

As they settled down with a lap to go Black Stunner was clearly in front, while Dynamic Miss and Car-bicide were doing their best to stay in touch. Heading down the back straight it was Black Stunner defying her rivalsm with the immediate two chasers making no impression, and only Suave Sticka that made ground from midfield. On the home corner it was all Black Stunner, and the 26kg chaser kept going strongly to the line, run-ning out a three and three quarter lengths winner over Suave Sticka in 35.37, with Barrington Fire finishing well in third place, a further three quarters length back. Black Stunner (x Ima Stunner), owned and trained by Jenny Barnett, to date has won five with six plac-ings from her 21 career starts.

Suave Sticka (Suave Fella x Wild Chant), trained by Ray Hind-marsh, after 24 career starts has notched three wins and six placings, whilst Barrington Fire (Collision x Pasha Appeal) has won three times with 16 placings from 43 career starts for trainer, Trevor Hagney.

BREAKING THROUGH for her first win at the Newcastle track in nine attempts was the Fred Goodall trained Frodo’s Player, who appreci-ated the rails alley in the Multicam Systems Stake over 515 metres. When the lids opened Frodo’s Player jumped well and was able to hold her position, keeping out the wider drawn Bush Tea and Sparkling Shelby at the first corner.

Going to the back Frodo’s Player led with Sparkling Shelby working into second spot and keeping the pressure on the leader and they had

the race between them. Turning for the run-in Frodo’s

Player was holding on determinedly while Sparkling Shelby kept edging away.

Frodo’s Player was able to hold out Sparkling Shelby and score by a head in 30.55, with Chevy Angel third, one and a half lengths away. Frodo’s Player, who’s by Big Daddy Cool out of Princess Player, overall has now had 11 starts for two wins and five placings.

Sparkling Shelby (Bombastic Shiraz x Proper Shelby), trained by Michelle Shambler, has produced a win and four placings from nine starts, whilst the Henry Norman pre-pared Chevy Angel (Where’s Pedro x Chevy Miss) has a win and two placings from just five raceday ap-pearances. Skinner’s favourite MERV SKINNER’S Tee For Tilly has had all eight career starts on the Newcastle circuit, and the white and black chaser brought up her second success when a strong winner in the Derby and Futurity January 20 Stake over the short course 400 metres. Spearing out of box six, the $2.90 popular pick, Tee For Tilly went quickly into the first corner, along with Playing It Cool, who pushed up from the rails box.

On the top corner Playing It Cool just held a slight advantage over Tee For Tilly, due to the inside running, however, Tee For Tilly always ap-peared to be travelling the better. Nearing the home turn it was Tee For Tilly that went to the front be-fore proceeding to gap her rivals over the concluding stages.

When the judge called a halt it was Tee For Tilly by three and three quarter lengths over Playing It Cool in 23.03, with Low Key holding on to third spot, a further one and a quarter lengths away. Tee For Tilly, by Cosmic Rum-ble from Asteria Gain, from her eight starts to date has had two wins and two placings.

Playing It Cool (El Galo x Spot Rocks), trained by Peter Neilson, has had six starts with a win and two placings, whilst the Russell Mansley trained Low Key (Primo Uno x Ready To Star) has recorded one win and five placings from 17 career starts. - Ron Arnold

AT DAPTO last Thursday night the feature race was the 520 metres Illa-warra Yacht Club final, with victory going to the Simon Rhodes prepared Jaynie Allen, who returned to the winner’s list after being runner-up at her previous two appearances. A very even field greeted the starter for the $3,000 to winner event and when the lids opened Jaynie Al-len began quickly from box eight and had the superior dash to cross the face of the field by the first corner.

Slotting straight into second spot, Slingshot Jack gave chase to the back, with Bolt Dani Bolt heading the others. Jaynie Allen was travelling well up front, however, Slingshot Jack was not going away and in fact was reducing the gap by the time they hit the home corner. Jaynie Allen turned for the run-in in front but had to pull out all stops in the run to the judge to fend-off Slingshot Jack and score by a half length in 30.39, while Bolt Dani Bolt was a further three lengths away third. Jaynie Allen, by Collision from Olivia Allen for the Wheeler camp, has had 35 career starts for seven wins and 14 placings.

Slingshot Jack (Proven Alias x Lip Service), trained by George Mi-callef, after 15 starts has accumulated two wins with four placings, whilst Mario Multari prepares Bolt Dani Bolt (Hallucinate x Queen Nikita), who has had 17 career starts for three wins and five placings.

THE MEETING got underway with a most impressive win by the Mark Arncliffe owned and trained Luscious Lips, who led throughout to clock a smart 29.95. The daughter of Elite State stepped straight to the front from box eight and easily outpaced her inside rivals in the run to the first turn.

Luscious Lips took them to the back with Supreme Brother in second spot, closely followed by Ambassa-dor Osti.

Down the back Luscious Lips stepped it up a gear and swiftly slipped clear, with the immediate chasers struggling to stay in touch. Down the side Luscious Lips shot right away and turned for home with an unassailable advantage. She went full steam to the post and after the 520 metres gallop was eight and a quarter lengths ahead of Ambassador Osti, with Supreme Brother a neck away third. Luscious Lips (x Fancy Trace) has now had seven starts for two wins and two placings.

Ambassador Osti (Collision x Special Osti), trained by Jason Mat-thews, has had 23 career starts for three wins and 12 placings, whilst

Syd Wales applies the polish to Su-preme Brother (Brother Knows x Dawn’s Memory), whose 13 starts have yielded two wins and five plac-ings.

NEIL STAINES has had mixed success with Replicate, however, the son of Give Me Five bounced back to the winner’s list at juicy odds and kept the bookies cheering throughout the 520 metres race. At boxrise Replicate was best to begin from box seven, with Evandros and Cawbourne Indy in hot pursuit. Leaving the straight Replicate settled in front, with Cawbourne Indy moving into second spot and Keldor had worked through the pack to be next. The order was the same all the way to the home turn, with Replicate travelling well into the home straight.

The immediate chasers couldn’t raise a telling effort, so Replicate held to beat Cawbourne Indy by one and a quarter lengths in 30.23, with Keldor third, a further two and three quarter lengths away. Replicate, from a May 2009 litter out of Rechargeable, to date has had 25 career starts for four wins and 12 placings.

Cawbourne Indy (Hallucinate x Cawbourne Fraz), trained by Andy Lord, from 40 starts has notched 12 wins and eight placings, whilst Kel-dor (Collide x Evil Lyn) has pro-duced five wins and nine placings from 30 career starts for trainer, Justin King.

Luscious Lips easily overcame the wide draw to post an all the way 29.95 win at Dapto for Mark Arncliffe.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, January 19th, 2012 – Page 57NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

NIT-PICKING maybe, but the source is impeccable.

Those learned people who flagged the Hobart Thousand as Aus-tralia’s oldest greyhound classic, please be advised of the following history lesson.

Learned author, historian and walking encyclopedia of the origins of our sport on the Apple Isle, Greg Fahey admitted that to be terribly technical, the Launceston Cup is re-garded, in his humble opinion, as the oldest greyhound classic in this coun-try.

It was first run back in 1935 at White City over 325 yards and won by the Ollie Illingworth trained local, Win Sheen.

The Hobart Cup was first run in 1935 and won by Elwick Boy, but the first officially named Hobart Thou-sand was won by Mr. Whackles over 410 yards in 1939.

But as for status, there’s no de-bate, it’s the opposite, according to the man won who owned the winner of the 1982 Hobart Thousand, Ku-daleen, and was also responsible for establishing the Tasmanian Hall Of Fame.

“You can’t compare the two races, the Thousand is an icon.”

Greg passed on the following information from his dusty archives.

“By the letter of the law, the Launceston Cup is the oldest, because the Thousand only became the Thou-sand in 1939 when it’s prizemoney was raised to £500 to the winner.”

It was worth £1000 to the winner from 1946 and remained the richest race in Australia. even after the Mel-bourne and Australian Cups com-menced.

Dark ages TASMANIA has been the butt of many jokes.

Isolated down south 400 plus kilometres from the Aussie mainland, their precious Apple Isle has at times suffered the ignominy of being ex-cluded from official maps of Austra-lia.

This exclusion has caused the ire of many Taswegians, who are genu-inely part of this huge island.

But as for greyhound racing ad-ministration, they may as well be in Antarctica.

Recently the December 27 nor-mal Tuesday Devonport afternoon meeting had to be cancelled due to mechanical problems.

The official explanation was a “conductor rail” problem.

It seems this has been an on-going problem for the ship loading port venue, and reports suggest over $100,000 has been poured into trying to rectify the perennial problem.

Even the December 20 meeting was held up for nearly an hour whilst hard working track staff once again tried to plug the gap.

Since that delayed meeting, track inspections detected severe buckling of the conductor rail due to heat stress.

Heat stress in Devonport . . . thank goodness they don’t cop 37°+ days like the rest of Australia.

The heat stress causes the rail to buckle or bend and this apparently causes bumps that interrupt the power

supply that moves the lure. Okay, that’s the unfortunate back-

ground of Devonport’s problems, serious enough to also cause the can-cellation of the January 3 meeting.

Now the reason for the mention in OTL is the lack of correspondence shown by those who control the sport down south.

Try as I could, searching through various websites, I couldn’t find out as to why the December 27 meeting was cancelled.

Not a word on the official Tasma-nian website.

Various emails to different de-partments went through to the keeper before I finally received a couple re-questing I contact another department as they could answer my query.

Government handballing, the late great Tasmanian bred Doc Baldock would be laughing.

Then came a response from Cor-porate Communications re the above problem.

“Tasracing does not usually issue media releases re meeting changes, rather we advise all racing partici-pants via email and/or SMS.”

“Local media are also on the dis-tribution list.”

“Would you like to be included on this list, taking into account that you will also receive thoroughbred and harness notifications?”

So, if you are a mainland punter who invests on Tasmanian greyhound meetings or the other two codes and aren’t in the loop, you’re on your own.

Haven’t they heard of the back-bone of racing, the punter, who with-out his daily and weekly contribu-tions 52 weeks of the year, there wouldn’t be a sport, nor a heavily populated over staffed racing admini-stration to control it.

“For your information, Tasracing also normally uploads information on its website, but this did not occur on this occasion.”

Firstly OTL is being told Tasrac-ing doesn’t issue media releases, then we’re advised that they upload infor-mation onto to its website.”

Then the clanger……….”but this did not occur on this occasion.”

Mug punters left in the dark again.

I humbly suggest that Tasracing gets into the 21st century and firstly upgrades its antiquated website and secondly, uses it to promote the three codes and issue press releases when incidents like this occur.

GRV has been copping plenty of flak lately, but along with GRNSW’s websites, both illustrate just what can be achieved by promoting and advis-ing participants on what is happening on a day to day basis.

Apart from the obvious problem with Devonport’s running rail in need of some serious upgrade, Tasracing falls into the same category, but it won’t be as costly.

I also look forward to receiving

information via the distribution list, but I won’t hold my breath.

Bridging the gap NGF’S SA scribe, Paul Rehmann mentioned recently that there is a distinct possibility that the City Of Churches state could be looking to open up a new one-bend greyhound track.

The hot mail suggests that the popular river venue, Murray Bridge is the short priced favourite, whilst Reh-mann indicated that the idyllic fishing town of Victor Harbor could come into calculations.

OTL delved a little deeper and was given assurances that Gawler and Angle Park still appear to be the logi-cal tracks for the northern and metro-politan participants.

The current and much needed upgrade of the Gawler venue, includ-ing the kennelhouse, is top of the list, whilst the future of Strathalbyn is up in the air.

Strathalbyn has only four years left of it’s current lease and there is uncertainty whether it will be ex-tended.

The Murray Bridge Showgrounds site has been vaunted by many fer-vent SA supporters for years and is really a no brainer.

Run by a dedicated bunch of greyhound stalwarts, it currently op-erates the safe and well patronised straight track but unfortunately it’s cries for endorsement for a restricted non TAB Licence has gone unan-swered for years.

Finally, it looks as if it’s pleas will be answered but there is also a chance of GRSA building a one-bend track alongside the straight track.

GRSA looks to have backed a winner with their Friday afternoon timeslot at Gawler, now if they can agree on a dual track complex at Murray Bridge, the future certainly will look a lot rosier for the croweat-ers.

Take two “AFTER taking Stewards observa-tions, head on footage, and observa-tions from handler Mrs. G. Annells into account, Stewards decided to take no further action in the matter due to the fact that the greyhound, Outcome had just received interfer-ence in the home straight which may have resulted in the greyhound be-coming unbalanced”.

Now, doesn’t that give punters and participants a better insight into what was originally reported in the SR text from Race 8 at Traralgon on December 23.

It read: Stewards spoke to Mrs. G. Annells, the handler of Outcome regarding the greyhound’s racing manners in the home straight.

After talking to the handler and taking Steward’s observations into account Steward’s took no further action”.

It’s all about transparency.

Cop a tip, don’t catch for scrooge THE lack of benevolence by a trainer raised a few eyebrows at a recent Group meeting in Victoria.

Seems the “after-race sling” for catching a Group 1 winner resulted in a paltry $10 being awarded to the local catcher.

Now, I’m not sure if there’s a set procedure for this process, and my late dad used to say, “be grateful for small mercies”, but in this day and age, a $10 back-hander is really an insult.

Even if the person concerned did-n’t have any bigger cash with him im-mediately after his success, he at least could have caught up later and put a “strawberry” in the catcher’s palm.

But, I’m sure the lad involved will quickly spread the word on Scrooge and he might struggle to find a willing helper next time he races at this venue.

I’m sure it will get a run in the annual Man In The Tree awards for this year, under “the unluckiest catcher” or the tightest trainer” cate-gory.

Move over, there’s another one getting in ANOTHER issue arose recently which concerns greyhound welfare.

A trainer was cautioned by Stew-ards and reminded of his responsibili-ties regarding the transportation of his greyhounds.

Regardless of whether you are taking two greyhounds to the track or 20 greyhounds, the onus is on the person transporting those canines to be mindful of the welfare of the grey-hound at all times.

That’s their primary concern, to

ensure those greyhounds arrive at the track in a fit and healthy state.

Now the feedback from the track suggests there were allegations that some greyhounds were “doubled up” in this incident.

“Squeezing” one greyhound in with another is definitely a “no-no”, regardless of the distance to be trav-elled, and in this case it was a two hour plus trip.

Some think it is a delicate topic but overloading animal transporters and trailers is bordering on animal cruelty and no leniency should be spared if trainers are found guilty.

GRV have a strict Code Of Prac-tice, which covers a wide range of topics, including kennel inspections, hygiene and record keeping require-ments.

GRV’S Dr. Linda Beer, the Ani-mal Welfare Manager advised OTL that the Code of Practice for the op-eration of Greyhound Establishments does NOT have a section relating to transportation of greyhounds.

“Transportation of dogs IS cov-ered in the Victorian Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Dogs, and there are also relevant sections of Legislation that apply across all dog breeds.

Copies of the Codes, Acts & Regulations are all freely available via the Victorian Government web-sites (Victorian Law Today, Bureau of Animal Welfare Website etc).

I would humbly suggest then that this particular and delicate subject be placed on the next GRV’s Board meeting agenda and a quick alteration to our own COP updated with a spe-cific mention to the correct method of transportation of our canines.

Or are future similar cases to be referred to the RSPCA or a higher body.

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the

most money, or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

How true.

Watta good thing! WATTA WHISPER, who won an extraordinary 19 races on TAB tracks last year, started 2012 with a bang by beating a hot field at Bulli on Monday, January 9.

Trained at Canyonleigh by Ruth Matic for Londonderry breeder, Margaret Greer, Watta Whisper took his record to 34 wins from 78 starts and his earnings to $38,500 at Bulli, where he toppled three Wentworth Park winners.

Although Watta Whisper got to the line strongly on Monday, Matic is not tempted to test the dog over 520 metres at Wenty Park.

“I don’t think he would run it out, and he is going so well in sprints that there is not much point in trying,” Matic said. “Although Watta Whisper has not won beyond 400 metres, he is at his best when he is pushed.”

“He does not record fast times when trialled on his own, and if he jumps to a clear lead tends not to clock brilliant times.”

“He is a true race dog, and it is when he is challenged or has to work that he really shines.”

Owner breeder, Margaret Greer used a rugby league analogy supporting Matic’s decision to restrict Watta Whisper to short course sprints.

“If you coach a champion half back, you don’t switch him to full back,” Greer said.

Half Sovereign, the dam of Watta Whisper, died last month aged 12, after whelping just three litters.

“Between them, her pups have won over 200 races, with Half Sovereign’s first litter to Token Prince topping the century,” Greer said.

********** WATTA WHISPER’S consistency was rewarded when he was declared the GBOTA’s 2011 Provincial TAB Greyhound Of The Year.

Cold Fusion, trained at Backmede, near Casino, by Neil Falls, was overall Greyhound Of The Year, courtesy of 17 wins, victory in the Group 2 Ipswich Cup and placings in two of his four Group 1 final appearances.

The metropolitan sector was taken out by Garry Edwards’ ill-fated Nowra trained More Space, while Charlie Northfield’s crack Lismore and Casino speedster, Proper Lucy won the country award.

********** THE IVERS family’s latest exciting litter from champion brood bitch, Classy Creek will soon make their 720 metres debuts at Wentworth Park.

Zsa Zsa, Pepper Shot, Czar and Mimicking, trained by Dawn Garrett, have been impressive at Richmond and Gosford.

Zsa Zsa took her record to three wins from nine starts in a 717 metres race at Richmond last weekend, while Czar has an identical strike rate and Mimicking won over 600 metres at Gosford on January 10.

“Michael Ivers bred Sand Burner, Symmetry and Nellie Noodles when he previously mated Classy Creek to Flying Penske, and this second litter to that dog were whelped in December 2009,” Garrett told us.

“I’m confident Zsa Zsa, Pepper Shot and Mimicking will get the 720 metres at Wenty Park, but there is a slight doubt about Czar.”

Garrett, based on of Ivers’ 5 hectare property at Somersby, has been training for 10 years and has always been successful.

She won 11 races with Little Egyptian, her first greyhound.

Page 60 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, January 19th, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Could he be the one? AUSTRALIA’S stakemoney record is currently $610,070 held by High Earner.

In second place is El Grand Senor on $581.335 (currently retired) and third is Rapid Journey on $530,995 (deceased).

Next on the list is El Galo on $519,380 (retired), with Bogie Leigh on $488,335 (deceased) fifth ahead of Man-tra Lad on $455,985 (retired) and Dash-ing Corsair on $455,665 (retired).

The dog in eighth spot is the first one we come to on the list that is still racing.

That’s Radley Bale, and as of Janu-ary 11, 2012, he has $453,448 in the bank.

He is currently contesting the Group 2 Bob Payne Summer Sprint at Wen-tworth Park and has box eight in the final which, by the time this appears, will have been run and won.

That race is worth $40,000, and if Radley Bale has been successful, then he’ll be on $493,448 or just a couple of city wins away from half a million.

Okay, he’s starting to get on in age, as he’ll be four on February 24 and he’s already raced 92 times.

However, just around the corner are these big Group 1 races;

The Perth Cup ($140,000 to the win-ner), the Temlee ($75,000 to the winner), the Australian Cup ($175,000 to the win-ner) and the Golden Easter Egg ($250,000 to the winner).

Now bear in mind that last year High Earner, who is a May 2007 whelp, con-tested these races and that is how he achieved the stakemoney record; so there’s only a three months age differ-ence at the corresponding time of the year between these two.

Mind you, there’s also the $40,000 to the winner Warragul Cup and the $40,000 to the winner Launceston Cup, both Group 2 races.

And there’s the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation worth $25,000 to the winner as well.

So, could there be a chance of his-tory repeating and Radley Bale claiming the record, like High Earner did?

Well, breathing down his neck is Dyna Tron, who currently has $422,088,

and in his favour is he’s a younger dog. I’d say there’s a real chance that he

might be chasing those same races too. An interesting time coming up for

sure. Change of name DIDN’T the “Bob Payne” used to be called the Bob Payne Winter Stake?

Now it’s the Bob Payne Summer Sprint.

I was just thinking, they could have moved it to Victoria and left the name the same. Both the same I’VE mentioned here before about the similarities of times recorded on the twin tracks of Geelong (outer) and Warragul, and Crafty Lady obviously thinks so too. She’s the current record holder at both tracks over the 680 metres trips, which is quite a marvellous achievement for a stayer that is relatively still only a novice.

The quirky part I guess is that she posted the same time at both venues, 39.05.

A daughter of Bit Chili and Valeri’s Purse, trained by Wayne Vassallo, the brindle half-miler has only started 13 times to date for eight wins. Lektra flying I GUESS it was rather strange that last week I mentioned Lektra Jay and Lektra Johnson as being two of the offspring of Elektra, a stayer who had more than 100 starts.

Little did I realise that these two chasers were having a go at the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup as their next assign-ment.

Even better is the fact that both quali-fied for the $40,000 to the winner final by winning their heats in 30.41 (Lektra Jay) and 30.45 (Lektra Johnson).

They were joined in the final by the ill-fated kennelmate, Dyna Steal.

He won my Best New Talent Award in 2010.

I thought he was the best dog in the Collision x Gold Rush Bale litter, but in-jury interrupted his career, so it’s real pleasing to see him make a race such as this.

Bear in mind that Dyna Tron, Dyna Bert and Dyna Morris are his brothers and have done alright for themselves. Form stacks up THE Sale Cup was an absolute beauty, and three dogs from that race qualified for the final of the Cranbourne Cup. We’ve always said that the Cran-bourne 520 metres trip is ideal for dogs that can stay, and three runners had no trouble in coming back from the 650 me-tres to the shorter journey at “Cranny”. The winner, Mystic Apple got through, as too did fifth placed Knocka Knows All and sixth placed Lektra Jay.

Those latter two chasers were beaten just two and two and a quarter lengths respectively in the Group 1 Sale event. On top of that, Proven Mayhem con-tested a heat of the Sale Cup and has made the final at Cranbourne. A little bit of a tie-in here, as Strong Intention also qualified for the Cran-bourne Cup and last year he beat Mystic Apple in the Group 2 McKenna Memorial over 595 metres at Sandown. The Cranbourne Cup, like the Sale Cup, had very little on the clock from the heats separating the finalists.

Despite this really competitive racing, it’s great to know that the form stacks-up from one major race to the next. Thomas and friends I HAD to do a bit of a double take at San-down on January 5. The dogs that won the last two races were Gordon Bale and James Bale.

I was hoping there was a Race 12 as Thomas Bale would have been the Monty of all Monty’s.

Well, Thomas the Tank-Engine then! Longshots PETER PEARSON had a story in his column last week about a 250/1 winner. Probably the longest odds of any greyhound that has won a metropolitan race!

I did hear of a dog winning at 330/1 on a NSW country track many years ago, but it might also have been an urban myth.

Anyhow, long-time readers of this column will recall a story I penned of a 100/1 winner.

The 100/1 was on one of the runners in a two-dog race… I kid you not.

It was at a Coursing meeting, and one of greyhound racing’s most colourful characters, the late Ray Boundy was the bookie

Ray was a jovial chap, to say the least, and loud, very loud.

He certainly livened up Coursing meetings.

Anyhow, Ray was making book on a course and was in the grandstand with his back to the action.

Business seemed slow so Ray started making calls of big odds on one of the dogs.

He was in all likelihood holding bets on the other dog to win the final, so he was trying to balance the books by get-ting some action on the other dog.

So, at the top of his lungs, the chant went something like this.

“Five to one the red… c’mon, it’s a camel, even the owner says so.”

No interest. “Ten to one… where do you get ten

to one in a two dog race?” Still no takers.

“Twenty to one, come on, I’m giving money away here!”

Still no one. “A hundred to one… come on, a hun-

dred to one, somebody back this thing.” A lady came forward with two dollars,

which he accepted. Unbeknownst to Ray, the dogs were

in slips as he took a couple more bets and finally he kept taking bets as the 100/1 dog sped out of slips with his rival obviously breaking down.

Ray paid out although I think one chap refused to take the money.,

I guess Ray learned a valuable les-son that day, and that was to watch what’s going on.

He took it all on the chin. Still, he made another blunder one

day; as he’d arrived a bit late and obvi-ously hadn’t marked his book.

He was laying 5/1 about a dog run-ning a bye; fortunately no one “stung” him.

Ray was one of many absolutely terrific people who frequented coursing in its halcyon days, and by golly, do I miss people like him. Pretty good field HOW’S this for a pretty good field? 1. Velocette 2. Path To Power 3. High Earner 4. Dyna Lachlan 5. Vacant Box 6. Enry Walt 7. Meticulou. 8. Bekim Bale

Just a ‘ball park’ figure, but I reckon those seven have won in excess of $2 million.

Those seven stars are all standing at Meticulous Lodge, and heck, I couldn’t begin to put a “street value” on those dogs, but I reckon they’d be insured for a “pretty penny!” Unloaded gun ONE of the great agonies in horse racing was that many champions were geldings. Same in trotting too, I guess. Greyhounds aren’t made to suffer the same treatment but sadly, quite a lot of our former champion chasers were ster-ile. I spotted on a greyhound forum a few comments about a few dogs that were “firing blanks”.

Or the old “unloaded gun” syndrome, as it has been called at times. Obviously with horses, once they’re gelded that’s it, but with technology being what it is, could they get a sample before the snip-snip? With greyhounds, are we at a stage that we can “surgically” get a collection from a “sterile” dog that maybe they can fix somehow in a laboratory? Then again, we have more stud dogs than we can poke a stick at; so maybe it’s a case of why bother. Still, seems a shame that we don’t get to see at least one litter out of a champion. A clash is not good GEE, we had two staying feature races clash in two adjoining states; and that to me is unforgivable.

Do they think we have stayers falling out of the sky?

At Wentworth Park there was the Globe Memorial, a Group 2 event over 720 metres with $40,000 on offer to the winner.

They got 17 entries, two heats of eight with the same reserve for the heats on January 7, with the final a week later.

They called for 32, not that I think the reserve was entitled to be that, but 17 really makes putting on three heats seem unrealistic, however, if we had a rule in place, it would have been the case.

As it turned out, the reserve gained a run, so the end result, I guess was no harm done (and it ran last, so I suppose it wouldn’t have been stiff to miss out).

At Cranbourne we had the time hon-oured Victoria Cup over 699 metres, where heats were held on January 9, with the final on January 15.

They got 15 entries for the $12,000 to the winner race, and as it turned out with scratchings, we had heats of six and five.

To me it’s sad that they clashed.

There is no cure ONE of the best things about the Internet is the humour that is shared on many networking sites.

Perhaps you’ve seen the photo of the bloke in the crowd watching some sport-ing event.

He’s wearing a baseball cap, and like so many “cool” people, he’s wearing it back to front.

And it’s obvious he’s looking into the sun, as he’s using his hand as a visor to shield his eyes.

Some clever person added the cap-tion, “There is no cure for stupid.”

And it’s true, as far as I can tell. Anyhow, get the picture well and truly

etched in your brain, as well as the cap-tion.

Now the next time someone (in real life) can’t see your point of view or is ar-guing obstinately or just giving you the “irrits”, just get that mental picture, look at them, smile and say, “Hopefully they’ll find a cure!”

Have a nice week! J Your Say “Didya See” asked, “Did you see who the three finalists are in the Victorian GOTY?”

“It’s Dyna Tron, Bobby Boucheau and Kilty Lad.” Three top dogs for sure. “Worry Wart” with, “I have a lot of con-cerns about this microchipping, is it safe?” There’s some say it is, there’s some say it isn’t. As it stands and as far as I know, all dogs will have to get one eventually. Then only time will tell whether we’ll have big problems or just a minor one or two. I’ve already heard of problems, but again, percentage wise, that might be very small. “Against The Trend” with, “I know this goes against the trend but I think we need to reduce the amount of meetings we have in a week.”

“Firstly, we’re catering for dogs that we shouldn’t be catering for, and at times at the expense of better dogs.”

“But it really has become overkill for mine,”

“I’d like to think that out there there’s say a million dollars to be bet on dogs a week, so if there’s 10 meetings, it’ll be $100,000 per meeting, if there’s 20 meet-ings, it’ll be $50,000 per meeting. Just sayin’.” Actually, regarding the money, you might have a good point, but as for the lower end meetings, I certainly think they need to stay at the moment, we just need to “fix” them up. But if they’re on the TV, they should stay there for sure (obvious reasons). “Old Punter” commented, “I love the exot-ics, and being an old place punter from way back, how hard is it to get the First 4.” Are you asking me how hard is it, well, very hard, I have trouble picking the winner. Actually, I see your point, a place punter works out the dogs that can run a place, not pick the winner. And I gather you box them up. Good move! COPING WITH HEAT For many in the industry, the prevailing view is that all three of these conditions are one and the same.

In fact this is not true, and if dog carers are expecting to see dehydration or symptoms of acidosis as a warning of impending heat stroke, then they could endure large losses on hot days.

Heat stroke occurs when the internal temperature of the greyhound exceeds normal values and the greyhound, through normal mechanisms, is unable to dissipate that excess heat.

Usually this occurs BEFORE the animal dehydrates, and symptoms of acidosis take three to five days to develop.

A greyhound can die from heat stroke in less than an hour. It is essential that trainers have some idea of the primary symptoms of heat stroke.

Excessive panting and prolonged recovery times following an exercise event will be the first clinical signs noted.

With the effort of increased panting, more heat is produced by the muscles, and dehydration, due to evaporation of water from the respiratory tract, ensues and adds to the problem. Dogs become very thirsty as a result.

However, soon the brain begins to overheat and the dog becomes more

distressed and unresponsive to his surroundings.

In heat stroke, as core body temperature reaches and stays at 43°C, severe organ damage occurs and the greyhound is in real danger of dying.

Heat stoke can occur not only in racing greyhounds on hot, humid days.

It can occur when greyhounds are travelling and are left in cars with the sun beating down on the metal.

Even i f the environmental temperatures do not seem warm, car internal temperatures can rise rapidly in a matter of minutes.

Very often it occurs when pups are left in long runs without access to shade or water baths to cool down.

It can even occur as a result of seizure activity, where there is excessive muscle activity.

Hourly checking of all racing dogs and pups is required.

Any dog that is distressed should be removed and hosed or wiped over its body with cool water, cooled towels from a portable refrigerator, and cool

compresses to the abdomen will all assist in the lowering of temperature.

Cooling coats are excellent aids, and all kennels should have some on hand for distressed animals having difficulty keeping cool or for travelling in trailers on hot days.

Spraying or misting with cool water for 30 - 60 minutes until the temperature drops also helps.

Normal temperature should be less than 39°C.

Be sure to cool the head and neck to avoid specific damage to the sensitive nerve endings of the eyes.

The practice of clipping dogs does little to cool greyhounds down. The hair layer is actually a good insulator, so it prevents radiant heat penetrating.

In the event of a heat stress incident, this insulating layer can easily be broken by thoroughly wetting the coat.

Severe cases of heat stroke are a medical emergency, and veterinary assistance should be sought, in addition to the above cooling methods.

Cool intravenous fluids and supplemental oxygen may be used.

It is important to appreciate that the problem is not primarily one of lack of fluids ,more of overheating.

ous $2.10, the Graeme Bate trained chaser came out running and had no trouble leading around to the Judge the first time in 9.15, with American Magee sitting second ahead of Pre-mier Boloney.

PATRON facilities at Shepparton’s greyhound and harness racetracks are set to receive a boost with Minister for Racing, Denis Napthine announcing major upgrades for spectator comfort at both facilities. Dr. Napthine said the Victorian Coalition Government would help fund two brand new viewing decks for greyhound and harness racing at the Kialla Paceway precinct, in a joint investment with the racing industry worth $178,630. The new viewing deck at Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club is set to increase capacity to seat an extra 70 spectators at the state-of-the-art facility and provide an exciting vantage point for punters. An elevated split-level deck will be installed at Shepparton Harness Racing Club to provide an alfresco dining area for up to 100 extra punters, in a prime position overlooking the parade ring and racetrack. “These new alfresco areas will increase capacity for feature races and the decks will have tables, umbrellas and seating, with marquees to cater for private functions,” Dr. Napthine said.

“The Coalition Government is pleased to partner with Greyhound Racing Victoria and Harness Racing Victoria to deliver nearly $180,000 in improvements to the region’s racing heartland and to create important local jobs during the construction phase.” Member for Shepparton, Jeanette Powell said the projects would be welcome additions to the region’s vibrant racing industry. “Shepparton’s harness and greyhound races are very popular and the construction of these new outdoor decks will provide not only great viewing points for spectators, but also relaxed function facilities to benefit clubs and community groups across the region,” Mrs. Powell said. GRV’s Deputy Chairman, Bill Salter said the greyhound industry was proud to work in conjunction with the Coalition Government to deliver another innovative yet practical infrastructure project by jointly funding the 75 square metres deck on a dollar for dollar basis. “This investment has the potential to open up new doors for greyhound racing in the town of Shepparton, particularly in terms of enticing local businesses, social

groups and sporting clubs to take advantage of what will be a fabulous outdoor facility,” Mr. Salter said. HRV Chairman, Mr. Ken Latta said Shepparton was one of Victoria’s expanding and most passionate harness racing communities and it was terrific to see the Victorian Government again promoting the sport in a key regional centre. “The Shepparton complex is an outstanding arena for harness racing and this enhancement to the facility will attract even more patrons to visit the track for a unique harness racing experience. “The collaboration between the Victorian Government, Shepparton HRC and Harness Racing Victoria to fund and foster this project has led to another positive outcome for the industry,” Mr. Latta said. Funding agreements for the two projects are as follows:

Greyhound racing outdoor deck - $98,000 to be equally funded by the Victorian Coalition Government and GRV.

Harness Racing outdoor deck - $80,630 to be equally funded by the Victorian Coalition Government and HRV.

Queen Selene was acknowledged as the 2010 Coursing Greyhound and Bitch of the Year, but her talents aren’t just restricted to the rigours of the historic sport. Last week she stepped out at only her fourth start and cruised to an easy 29.76 GOBIS Maiden win for owner, Damien and Julie Belsham and trainer, Dave Dawson. A daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Queen Cleopatra, the white and fawn chaser will be a very valuable mum once her racing days are over. “She’s was a duffer out of the boxes until we tried her at the coursing and that gave her the confidence she needed. The transition from coursing to chasing just followed.”

Dyna Kate, pictured with handler, Aiden Andrews, just keeps wining over the 595 metres trip. Last week she once again showed her customary good box manners and was untroubled in scoring her fourth win over the testing middle distance journey.

The Toora pub’s pin-up boy, Credit Cruncher celebrated his fourth birthday in December but can still hold his own in the highly competitive city competition. Raced and trained at the idyllic seaside town by Ken Height, the black sprinter notched his 25th career win with a 29.73 victory in a classy Grade 4 event over 515 metres. “He loves the special attention he gets down here and thrives on a special diet of shark and green vegetables.” Good, clean country air and a perfect diet, what more could a dog need.

Nova Vite has her sights firmly fixed on the Australian Cup at The Meadows, according to her Violet Town trainer, Mick Carter. The hugely talented but underrated sprinter made it three city wins on the trot after her easy all the way 29.60 victory to claim the GOBIS final over 515 metres. Raced by Suzanne Tindall, Nova Vite, a well bred daughter of Bombastic shiraz and Nova Keroma, has now won eight of her 26 career outings.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN bred Stack ’Em Flat has been crowned The Meadows Greyhound of the Year for 2011 after an impressive season at the Broadmeadows circuit over the 525 and 600 metres journeys. The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Bar Crusher raced 16 times at The Meadows last year, finishing with the impressive record of four wins, five seconds and three thirds, earning 35 points for 2011. Two of his third placed efforts came in the Group 2 Rookie Rebel behind Symmetry and an unlucky effort behind Shintaro Samurai in the Group 2 City of Hume Cup – both run over 600 metres. The Meadows GOTY award is based on a points system: 4 points are awarded to a greyhound that wins a regular race at the track, 10 points are given for a Group 3 win, 12 points for a Group 2 victory and 16 points for Group 1 success. Points are also handed out for placegetters across all forms of racing. Stack ’Em Flat is trained by master conditioner, Graeme Bate, who finished one-two in GOTY voting with the brilliant Shereen Bale a close second on 34 points,

including victory in the Group 1 Maturity Classic in July. Group racing continues at The Meadows in February for the Australian Cup Carnival and the running of five G r o u p r a c e s , including the Group 1 MTD Australian Cup ($175,000 to the winner), the Group 1 Macro Meats Temlee ($75,000), the Group 1 Macro Meats Australian Super Stayers ($75,000), the Group 2 Macro Meats Zoom Top ($40,000) and the Group 2 Macro Meats Rookie Rebel ($40,000).

Lethbridge alive! The Meadows January 11 SITUATED on the Midland Highway about 65 ‘clicks’ from the Geelong track is the town of Lethbridg, and that’s where Emilio Rinaldi prepares his greyhounds.

Now “Nom”, as he’s known, has a couple of above-average litters currently racing, and three members of those won at The Meadows last Wednesday afternoon.

Dude Rancher opened the batting for the team when he broke his duck in a 525 metres Maiden.

Coming off the reserves bench into box one certainly assisted the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Greys Lemon Ice, who railed through and was under a length behind the pacesetting Bella Profit at the initial bend.

Railing through, Dude Rancher ($3.90) checked Bella Profit on the bend then sprinted clear along the back, reaching the next check-point holding a near eight lengths break.

At his fourth start, Dude Rancher did it easy in the run to the judge, going on to beat Bella Profit ($4.60) by 11¼ lengths in 30.54, while there was a further one and three quarter lengths to third placed Slow White ($2.80 fav).

Ice Trucker, a brother of Norm’s first win-ner, Dude Rancher, was successful from the rails draw in the ‘lucky last’, a 525 metres Grade 5.

Even though Random Road showed plenty of early and mid-race pace to lead Ice Trucker, she faded on her run.

Swooping to the front rounding the final bend, Ice Trucker ($4.10) broke clear, and it was left to Prancing Joe to flash home.

Although he made up heaps of ground, Prancing Joe ($6.30) went under by a head to the red vested runner, while Random Road ($5.00) lasted for third, nearly four lengths adrift.

Ice Trucker has raced five times for two wins.

Both Graeme Bate and Steve Collins landed a double at the midweek fixture… and they were also race to race doubles.

off the back then scored an easy five and a quarter lengths victory.

At his 13th start, the well bred black dog clocked 30.46 to down Mister Charlie, ($11.00) with Union Lad ($2.90) third, a length away.

Silence is golden Grafton January 13 DYRAABA based greyhound trainer, Andrew Monaghan was stunned by the efforts of Call Of Silence after she scored a blistering win in the Grafton Radio Taxis Stake at the Grafton last Friday afternoon.

Andrew was not surprised by the victory but was surprised by the flying time of 22.89.

In fact he was overheard to quip, “she cannot run it!”

However, run it she did, with the daughter of Collision and Nada Mee exiting box four with a wing on each paw, recording smart section-als throughout.

Call Of Silence did show promise early in her career on the grass surface at Casino, but her recent form had tapered-off.

Now that she has hit her straps, Call Of Silence may just well go right on with it, after defeating Tilley’s Pick and Schapelle Trick, paying the big odds of $11.30 in what was the

fastest time of the day for the 407 metres journey.

It was smiles all round for the connections of Sure Destiny after the Shane Lippell trained runner overcame early trouble before racing away with the Clarence Valley Sheds Stake over 305 metres.

Shane was unable to make the trip to Grafton on Friday, due to work commitments in Byron Bay, however, his partner, Kylie Robin-son informed us that those commitments were never going to stop him from supporting his runner, with a mad dash to a Byron Bay Hotel thre likely scenario.

Both Kylie and Shane gave their sprinter a good chance of taking out the event, and each were pleasantly surprised by the succulent odds of $13.80 paid on the NSW TAB.

Word has it that Shane cheered so loudly that he then had to apologise to those on hand in the Hotel, however, once he explained the situation, the other patrons were only disap-pointed they didn't get the tip.

It has been a real family affair in getting Sure Destiny ready for this race after three months off the scene, and all involved can be justifiably proud of their efforts.

Shane Staples has been racking-up the miles in search of suitable races for his team of greyhounds, with Regal Chereve being testa-ment to those efforts.

Regal Chereve has lined up at Tweed Heads, Casino, Moree, Albion Park and now Grafton at her past five appearances and landed some nice wagers when taking out the Greyhound Performance Products IFR Lasers 5th Grade over 480 metres, clocking 27.79 when defeating Capital Countess and Five Gold Rings.

Junction Hill trainer, Jim Madigan was very confident that his chaser, Royal Victory could make it two from two when she lined up from box one in the J & C Bullen Roofing Stake.

And his confidence was well founded, as the $1.80 favourite blitzed her rivals in the smart time of 23.01.

The ever-improving Royal Victory de-feated Maverick and Rich Debate by six lengths.

Fairy Hill trainer, John Free has his eyes set firmly on the 5th Grade Blue Paws heats to be held here over 480 metres on Friday with Premier Demand, and based on is brilliant 27.38 victory last week, he would be mad not to contest it.

Premier Demand has been racing in fine style at Lismore in recent weeks and he brought every part of that good form to Grafton when taking out the Carters Canine Capers 5th Grade over 480 metres to beat Thunderfire by three and three quarter lengths, with a similar gap to third placed Lyndan Bear.

The Terry Jordan show continued on it's merry way once again, with the Ettrick based trainer rugging-up Bonny Lyndan to victory in the Greyhound Performance Products 4th/5th Grade over 305 metres.

Lining up against some very good opposi-tion, Bonny Lyndan defied her long odds of $12.30 to win very well indeed.

Bonny Lyndan recorded the time of 17.38 when defeating Much More and Chasing Sla-ter, and based on that performance, she will be winning many more.

Colin Graham is well aware of the ability that his smart chaser, Hanify’s Legend pos-sesses, but it has been a real battle for the Wiangaree trainer to keep his greyhound on the track, with injuries continually threatening to derail his career.

Although the distance of 407 metres in the George’s Tree Services Stake is well short of his best, the small field of six certainly was to his liking, and once he stayed in touch with the other runners around the bend, he was always going to be hard to hold out.

Hanify’s Legend was too strong for Phan-tom Alex and Lord Of Thunder in 23.23.

At the previous meeting Yambora Boy ran a nice race when runner up to Dinjerra Style in a 480 metres Maiden, and he franked that form by going one better when taking out the West-lawn Finance Maiden over 480 metres.

The Pat Lavis trained chaser paid nicely on the TAB at $8.10, as after wearing down the early leader he got up right on the post to score in 28.13.

Yambora Boy scored by a half length, with Start Me Up charging home to be a close third.

Other winners on the program were Where's Tayla for Robert Andrews in the Sedgers Reef Hotel Maiden, Curly Trick, who won well for Darryl Schafer in the Black Tar Maiden, Billy Brady for Michael Menken in the Village Green Hotel Stake and Diamintina for Graeme Bowles in the Calcium Plus Stake.

Talking Greyhounds WAGGA raced another fantastic 10-event program at Riverina Park on January 15, with plenty of action and the best crowd for 2012 in attendance.

The TAB windows were lined up all night with punters warming to the Wagga circuit.

Age is no barrier in greyhound racing and Wagga trainer, Kevin Oakman, having over 50 years experience with the collar and lead, cleaned up the TAB Number 1 Final with Elec-tric Bill, who returned $22.90.

It was a big night for Kev, as his other starter, Boss Rhino ($3.10) was an eight lengths winner.

Congratulations must go to young Wagga trainer, Mitch Williams, who also trained a winning double on the night for the big clan of followers who were on-course.

Williams led Spark Driver ($9.70) to vic-tory before completing his double with the well supported Dazzle Em ($2.60).

There was certainly a big following of new people to greet Williams on his return to the enclosure,

Great stuff, greyhound racing is the win-ner.

Keep an eye on the calendar section of “The Dogs” website, where the biggest racing in February and March will take place at Wagga. - Wagga Wrangler

GREYHOUND Racing Victoria has reintro-duced its $50,000 triple country cups bonus for 2012. Initiated for the first time in 2011 when captured by Gippsland superstar El Grand Senor, the $50,000 bonus is available to the first greyhound to win three Victorian country cups in a calendar year. Geelong greyhound Mystic Apple won Victoria’s first country cup in 2012 last Sun-day when capturing the Cranbourne Cup, a group 2 event worth $40,000 to-the-winner. Another 10 country cups will be run in Victoria in 2012, one at each of the state’s remaining provincial tracks. GRV Chairman Peter Caillard said GRV had little hesitation in reintroducing the bo-nus. “GRV’s $50,000 country cups bonus was initiated in 2011 to help boost the profile of country racing, and to entice a greater number of quality greyhounds to race on the provincial circuit.” “Last year champion sprinter El Grand Senor attracted a lot of interest in our sport from many non-racing people, and winning three country cups and snaring the inaugural

triple cups bonus was a big part of that,” Caillard said. Last year El Grand Senor became the first greyhound to win three Victorian country cups in a calendar year since Whisky Assas-sin in 2004.
