We experienced a lot of rain during our pony ride to Johnstown’s inclined plane where Tim Baker with Danielle K Smith and Jerry Smith transferred their Mustangs up and down the vernacular along with 33 attending GPMC members. The view of Johnstown was spectacular and the historic site was very inspiring. We followed that up with a rain run to the world famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. We had an enjoyable picnic lunch under a covered pavilion in the rain. We took the small incline up to the top of the curve and got a close view of passing trains with another spectacular view down the valley filled with three Altoona water supply reservoirs. We ended the cruise with a visit to the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum. A Fall cruise in this area would provide beautiful foliage and views. Our All Ford Power Show Charity Event in June will be at Shults Ford’s new location, which is very close to the current location. This is the Club’s main charity event so please plan to attend and help out with donations and running the show. Mustang night at the Northway Starlite Cruise will be July 29 th and we will follow it up with a GPMC volunteer night there on Friday, August 19th. Our annual hospitality picnic will be at Moon Park on August 14 th so mark your calendar. This is a great event to meet and greet new, old and prospective members. Keep an eye on the club website for all upcoming Summer and Fall events. The Vintage Grand Prix is coming up in July. It is a great charity event and always a great time, with a lot of cars and enthusiasts. GPMC will be setting up tents overlooking the racetrack with food and drink and for a small fee you can join us and park your Mustang on the show grounds with other Mustangs. I am sure some members have great ideas for activities. Share them with the board or AD Tim Baker. Also, if you have an article for the newsletter, please forward to Scott Unger. Jennie Barker is still looking for new pictures and information of recent events for the GPMC website. Got pictures of cruises, events or your car, do not forget to send them in. Hope to see all 139 and counting members at our next meeting on June 1 st at Croatian Park off of Babcock Blvd. in the North Hills. This is a great site for our first outdoor meeting of the Summer season and has great facilities including plenty of parking, a covered pavilion and restrooms. The club will provide hotdogs and members will be bringing covered dishes, desserts and drinks. Our website has full directions to all our summer season outdoors meeting sites and I will post GPMC signs along the close in approach roads. As always, we would like to hear from you, brand new or long time members, on any suggestions for improving Your Club. As always, your Officers and Board would appreciate your ideas and help. Tim the Tour Man’s Activities Round-Up - Activities Update for June 2016 As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the car show season will kick into high gear and there are plenty of events coming up to keep the club busy. Every Friday the Starlite Car Cruise takes place in Wexford. Remember that Mustang Night and GPMC Service night are coming up later in the summer, but you can attend this fine show any time. The 32nd Anniversary All Ford-Powered Show will take place at the new Shults Ford location on Gulf Lab Road in Harmarville on Sunday, June 12. The registration forms will be available soon. Be sure to sign up to help put the show on as well. From setting up to registration to judging the cars to tearing down, there's a lot that goes into a show and any help is greatly appreciated. The annual Can-Am weekend takes place from June 17-19, this year in Erie, PA. For the uninitiated, Can-Am is a weekend get-together of several Mustang clubs: Niagara Classic Mustangs, Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club, Mahoning Valley Mustangs, and Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club. It's a good time to get together with other Mustang owners and make some new friends or re-acquaint yourself with old friends. The Sunday cruise that is planned through the Presque Isle peninsula is always a nice excursion. The Leetsdale Fourth of July parade has again invited GPMC to their parade, obviously in Leetsdale and more obviously on July 4. This was a fun event for those who participated last year as the crowd is exuberant and welcoming. The parade committee permits the throwing of candy...and the townfolk seem to demand it...so pick up some candy to throw to the crowd. Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix weekend at Schenley Park is July 16-17 and GPMC will have a presence again this year on race weekend. Be sure to stop by the GPMC tent if you go to the Grand Prix. Mustangs on the Niagara July 22 – 24, hosted by the Western New York Shelby and Mustang Club. It will be Mustang Night at the Starlite Car Cruise in Wexford on Friday, July 29, so bring your pony out and show it off. The GPMC Hospitality Picnic will be held at Moon Park on Sunday, August 7. Al & Barb did a fantastic job last year, so don't miss the picnic! Friday, August 19, it will be back to the Starlite Car Cruise in Wexford, this time for GPMC Service Night as the club gives back and helps the organizers who put on the show. We are the only club that does this, and that matters to the organizers. September 1 through 4 will see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway host the Mustang Club of America's 40th Anniversary celebration. This is a non-judged show that celebrates the Mustang and its national club and is one of the few opportunities to drive a street car on the racing surface at Indianapolis. If you are going, please let Tim know at [email protected] as we are organizing a club parking area, and maybe a few other ideas. Finally, with a successful Spring Stampede behind us, it's now time to look forward shortly to this year's Fall Foliage Tour. If you have any ideas of a destination, drop me a note as the slate for this event is wide open. Thanks, Tim

The National Mustang Museum

Perhaps some of us have received an email from the people at Down the Road Marketing detailing the effort to build a museum for Mustangs. Ron Bramlett and Steve Hall have undertaken the effort to create the museum, located near Charlotte, North Carolina (Concord). This link will take you to the website: National Mustang Museum . Looks like a possible road trip in 2017! We hope they have done a good geotech study for stable earth, with no sinkholes. If you would like to get on the National Mustang Museum's e-mail list and receive updates about the progress and event dates, please sign up here: Link to Sign up for Mustang Museum Emails. This link takes you to another site that also has a write-up in the museum too: Ford Performance Lessons Learned A tip to keep your GPS in place on a clean and shiny dashboard. At least one of us has broken his GPS when it was not restrained by the beanbag bottom. Since I don’t like to use the suction cup and mark the window, I use the beanbag. While accelerating on an on-ramp, my GPS did a nice triple flip from the center of the dash to the gear shift, shattering the screen. To keep the GPS in place, I used a piece of non-stick grip shelf liner under the bean bag, so far no more slip. – Scott Unger.

Mustang Pinball Machines by Jason Uhler

Like many of you, my passion for Mustangs goes beyond the cars themselves. That is evident by my game room and garage, which Jacquie thankfully deals with well. Whether neon signs, original Mustang pedal cars from the ‘60’s, or a 40mpg Shelby GT-350 go-kart that some of you experienced at the cruise in Wexford last year as I squeezed in and embarrassed myself, I’m always looking for something unique and cool. I’ve always been into pinball and arcade machines and have purchased a few car-related pinball machines over the years, which I still have. In fact, I even had to purchase a Corvette one several years ago since they didn’t make a Mustang pinball machine. Sure, one manufacturer made a game called “Mustang” in the ‘70’s, but it was a horse rather than car theme. Well, in 2014 I was so excited to hear that Stern was releasing a new Mustang pinball machine. I even got to play one in a local collection soon thereafter and it was great, but I was turned off by the $6,000 price for a “regular” one or $8,500 for the limited edition. My first Mustang (a used ’88 GT) cost about that much! Much to my surprise while doing searches online at the time for “Mustang Pinball” a few of them yielded a strange result. There appeared to be an earlier version of a Mustang pinball machine, but the information was very limited and the

pictures few and far between. What, was this new offering not the first of its kind??? Of course, I was intrigued and now on a mission. That led to 2 years of researching online and speaking with a lot of people in the pinball hobby around the country. There is a place in West View with about 1,000 games at any given time in their warehouse and have been in business for decades. When I called to see whether they had one, even if in bad shape, the owner stated that he had never even seen one in person. Every collector I had spoken with had never seen one, but knew they were uncommon. Turns out, I was able to determine that 500 were produced. I finally located someone with one, but it was in storage and not even playable. That was the owner of a huge pinball museum in Las Vegas. He wished me luck finding one since he estimated that less than 50 have survived. I believe it b/c these games were used, abused, and destroyed when arcades closed over the years. Besides, finding one has been more elusive than a 427 Cobra in a barn.

A few months ago, one surfaced for sale online in California. The distance was not an issue other than the cost to ship it and concern over the back glass breaking during shipping (the back glass and playfield are always the critical parts since they are not remade.) After getting some info from the machine, it was a complete shock to me that this particular game had a build date of 7/64.

Yep, the Mustang was not seen by the public until 4/17/64, so this was either a real quick turnaround and they had guessed well that this new car would be popular or Chicago Coin, who produced them, was working with Ford on these as a promotional opportunity. That answer still remains unknown, but I’ll keep digging. The machine arrived safely about 2 months ago and it’s in great all-original condition with just the right amount of patina. It clearly was a well taken care of machine that must not have gotten much play wherever it was located. You will see from the pictures, that the name Mustang is pretty unassuming, but is across the top of the back glass and there is a red Mustang coupe racing down the road in the lead! The only other Mustang characteristics present are the spinner in the middle, which is a correct hubcap, and the well- recognized door lines down both sides of the cabinet. It’s certainly not going to be beat on, however it’s not going to sit there like a piece of art either – it was meant to be played and I can’t wait to do it. In fact, any kids (from 5-95 years old) who come to visit are welcome to take it for a spin!

Maybe I’ll end up with one of those newer ones someday, but I’m going to wait to get a used one after someone trades it in on a newer model!!!

An original flyer advertising the machine when introduced.
