Next Meeting Sunday, October 12, at 2 PM Jam Band at 1:15 PM San Francisco Accordion Club The Aurora Mandolin Ensemble (AME) is a subset of performers from the larger Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, making it possible for the Aurora Mandolins to perform for venues ranging from the concert hall and outdoor festivals, to restaurants, clubs and private parties. The Aurora Mandolins are directed by Jo Pellegrini, and the Orchestra is the largest of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area, consisting of up to thirty professional and amateur musicians (mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar, string bass, accordion, flute and percussion) from around the Bay Area. What makes the Aurora Mandolins unique is their varied repertoire including traditional and semi- classical Italian, Spanish, Russian, specialty ethnic and contemporary orchestral compositions. They have given public performances to thousands of music lovers and are especially proud to have played Davies Hall at the San Francisco Symphony’s opening night gala in 1984. The Aurora Mandolins have also performed at the Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park, Santa Clara University, and is a regular at the annual San Francisco Mandolin Festival. Gino Pellegrini, a member of the original Aurora Mandolin Orchestra in the 1930's, represents the thread of continuity to the present organization which he reorganized in 1970. He became the Director and Concertmaster of this group of musicians and was its heart and soul for 35 years until his death in 2006. After Gino's passing, his wife Josephine, affection- ately known as "Jo," assumed the vacant role of Director/Conductor at the request of and with the full support and encouragement of the members of the group. Her dedication, ingenuity and energy have enhanced performances while successfully preserving Gino's legacy of bringing the vibrancy and passion of the mandolin to more and more people. We are thrilled towelcome LouisRodriquez who willalso perform for usthis month. He wasborn in Chili andbegan studying theaccordion when hewas seven years old.In 1958, afterbecoming the bestclassical accordionistin his home country,he received ascholarship from the

Hohner Conservatory in Germany where he studiedwith Frau Lydia Braun-Kreig. He graduated as bothan accordion teacher and a concert accordion soloist.He has been an accordion teacher and also taughtmusic theory and analysis to public school musicteachers. In 1966, he offered the first classicalaccordion recital in the country's history, playing aprogram of original composition for the instrument.

Mike ZampiceniMike has been involved with the accordion his entirelife. He is the son of noted accordionist, teacher,composer, arranger and music publisher, JosephZampiceni. He began formal study of the accordionat age 8, and played his first paid engagements byage 11. At 14 he joined his father’s orchestra,playing accordion and drums and by 17, he was in

the musician’s union, asleader of his own band.While in high school,Mike’s choral teachertook note of his tenorvoice and encouragedhim to compete in vocalcompetitions and furtherhis vocal studies.

Mike graduated fromSan Jose StateUniversity with a B.A.degree in Music,

concentrating on voice, piano and organ. After ayear’s break, he returned to work on an M.A. degree,during which time he was chosen as the tenor soloistin a performance of a Bach cantata with the San JoseSymphony. Mike recently retired from a career as atechnical writer. He has always been active in themusic profession, continuing to play engagementsand teach students.

Reno and Gianna Di BonoReno Di Bonowill also beplaying for usaccompaniedby his grand-daughter,Gianna DiBono. Theyrecorded asong togetheron Reno’sItalian CD “Songs of My Father.” Reno is well-known in Northern California and the Bay Area forplaying dazzling Italian Music. DUCKMANDUAaron Seeman, known as Duckmandu, will join us

again to play hisindividual styleof accordion andvocals. Inaddition to his“accordionization-izing”, AaronSeeman is afoundingmember,arranger, andvocalist with SanFrancisco's PunkRock Orchestra,

which performs full scale orchestral versions ofclassic punk songs. He also plays accordion in thegroups Shamalamacord, Polkacide, and Red HotChachkas.

3 SEPTEMBER MEETING WAS ROCKING!By Randall Hicks

Anyone arriving early to the September meeting wasgreeted by the upbeat sounds of the Jam Band. Theirenthusiasm was infectious and it was a great way toget in the mood for what was to come. Thanks to Vicand Barb Corsiglia who led the group.

September is the time to elect our Executive Board forthe October 2014 – September 2015 membershipyear. After a call for nominations from the floor,President Lynn Ewing asked for a voice vote and thenominees were unanimously approved with noabstentions. For the upcoming year our ExecutiveBoard will be: Lynn Ewing, President; DominicPalmisano, Vice President; Elaine Cooperstein,Treasurer; Jean Butler, Robert Cooperstein, DonSavant and Vincent Rinaldi, Directors at large.

The first half of our program had a special theme - theperformers were contestants from the recent ATGfestival held here in August.

Our firstperformer wasYifan Tong, aten year old(almost) younggentleman fromSan Ramonwho took firstplace in hiscategory at thefestival. He

began with Pastoral for the Prairie that started in asomber Chinese modality, but it wasn’t long before itbroke into a faster rhythm with a Latin beat. Veryinteresting, and very well played. For a secondselection, Yifan treated us to Reginella Campagnola(The Woodpecker Song).

Next on theprogram was Dr.Scott Anderson,M.D. whocompeted in fourcategories at ATG.He opened withMarchetti’sFascination,beginning in thetraditional waltz

style and adding his own flair concluding in a Latinrhythm. This was followed by Speak Softly Love(Theme from the Godfather) and Dr. Anderson’s owninterpretation of Besame Mucho.

Following Dr. Anderson was Pam Tom whoambitiouslycompeted infive cate-gories. Pamplayed twoMagnantearrangements:AccordionBoogie andGay Rancheroseparatingthem with

what she calls her Train Song Medley – Railroader’sLament (500 Miles to go) and City of New Orleans.

The last of our “contestants” was Kate Froeberg whoentered three categories. Several of Kate’s selectionstoday were inspired by what she heard at the festival.She opened withBubbles, a “novelty”piece by Frosini.Having a greatappreciation for herteacher Victor Leone(a protégé of JoeBiviano) she playedhis compositionMusical Portraits in¾ Time. The nextpiece Kate played is awork in progress. Atthe ATG Convention, she was particularly taken by apiece composed by Franck Angelis. Angelis is apresent day performer and composer for theaccordion. The piece, Romance, however, wasoriginally scored for the Bayan. Kate is in the processof adapting the Bayan score for Piano accordion andshe treated us to her progress on this beautiful piece.Kate’s last piece was a “sing-along” – Magnante’sDizzy Fingers. I didn’t hear anyone singing alongthough – I’m not sure if it was because no one knewthe words or because it was dizzyingly quick?

All four performers must be thanked for not onlyadding to the enjoyment of our program today, butalso for representing the Bay Area at the ATGFestival so well.

SEPTEMBER MEETING, Cont’d:

Before thebreak, LynnEwing hadthe greatpleasure ofawarding aLifetimeachievementaward toLouJacklich, inrecognition

of his 70 years as an accordion teacher (and stillcounting), over 78 years as a nationally touringperformer and having touched the lives of well over1,000 accordion students throughout the course of hiscareer. Lou felt very honored, and great pride wasevident in thefaces of thosestudents of Louwho were inattendance atthe meeting(presentcompanyincluded!)

The drawings for the door prizes and raffle wereconducted and a special thank you to Kay Patterson,who donated a bottle of one of the luscious red winesfrom their family winery – Nichelini Winery in St.Helena.

Today was also aspecial day for our“coffee lady”Barbara Winter. Inhonor of herbirthday, she treatedus all to cookies andof course the crowdjoined in a rousingchorus of HappyBirthday!

Our featured performer, Alicia Baker, took the stage.Alicia is a serious and accomplished performer, buteven before hearing a note, one can’t help but becharmed by her bubbling personality. This personality

spilled over into the lively polka she opened with toput everyone in a festive mood. Alicia is aperforming artist with Roland accordions and took theopportunity toshow us some ofthe “cool” thingsthat a Roland cando. To a Frenchmedley, thatincluded Sous LeCiel de Paris, atthe push of abutton, she wasable to virtualize adouble-bass playerand percussionist.In PaulDesmond’s jazzstandard TakeFive, she deployeda “looper” – asnippet of musicthat is recorded and then played back over and over ina loop.

On top of a vocal “loop,” Alicia was able to make heraccordion sing – I mean literally – the sound andenunciation was that of a scat singer, that was until shehit a switch and the scat singer turned into a saxplayer. As you may have read in her profile in lastmonth’s newsletter – Alicia is not just an accordionist– and we were treated to her beautiful lyric sopranovoice, singing two Puccini arias – O mio bambinocaro from Gianni Schicchi and Quando m’ en vo’from La Boheme as well as some lighter Frenchfavorites C’est ci bon and La Vie en Rose.

Some of the other pieces Alicia delighted us with wereGitanerias from Lecuona’s Andalucia Suite and a setof virtuoso variations on the melody Meadowlands(Russian folk song Polyushko Polye). If you are goingto play the accordion, you have to know a polka ortwo, and Alicia played the lively Tanzende Finger(Dancing Finger) Polka and closed her program withSkinny’s Polka by the late Verne Meisner. Aliciawasn’t going to get to leave the stage without playingan encore and she gave us a wonderful rendition of deAbreu’s Tico Tico.

We thank all our performers today for making ourmeeting so special and we would like to especiallythank Roland for sponsoring Alicia’s appearance heretoday!

Armed with the loud musical instruments that have oftenbeen derided as interminably square, a group of Bay Areaaccordion devotees plans a "Lady of Spain" assault on CityHall today to get the Board of Supervisors to declare thepiano accordion the official instrument of San Francisco."We're tired of seeing the accordion maligned," said TomTorriglia, leader of a local and vocal 12-piece accordionband. He's the official spokesman for the squeeze-boxmovement seeking political recognition at City Hall.The accordionists, claiming that the piano accordion wasinvented in San Francisco around 1907, have won thesupport of Supervisor Willie Kennedy. She promised tointroduce a resolution saluting accordions at the board's 2p.m. meeting today. The resolution credits ColomboPiatanesi of North Beach with having invented the pianoaccordion, the bellows instrument with the familiar pianokeyboard. Button accordions also would be included in thecity's proclamation, however.Kennedy, who does not play, said she's perfectly happy togive the accordion a hearing at City Hall.San Rafael and ItalyColombo accordions, which can cost as much as $10,000,are now manufactured in San Rafael, each instrument hand-crafted with parts imported from Castelfidardo, Italy, whereaccordion manufacturing is the traditional industry.Gordon Piatanesi of Colombo & Sons said he can't becertain his grandfather was the inventor of the pianoaccordion."There's no real record. Maybe he did invent it, maybe hewas the first guy in America to build one, or maybe he wasthe first one to sell one," said Piatanesi. "We know that hemade one in 1907 in San Francisco, but the accordionmuseum in Italy shows one also dated 1907 that came fromCastelfidardo," he added.Although the accordion is one of the world's most commonfolk instruments - and one that recently has enjoyed aresurgence in popularity - it actually was invented in China,historians say. Along with noodles and gunpowder, aChinese reed instrument called the cheng was brought toItaly by Marco Polo. Italians devised bellows to play thecheng, so they could sing along with it.The Chinese angle adds clout to making the accordion SanFrancisco's official instrument.

Rescuing the homely piano accordion from the brink ofobscurity, San Francisco supervisors yesterday dubbed itthe city's official musical instrument.

"I know some of you thought this was a foolish idea, butthis is a very serious idea," said Supervisor WillieKennedy, sponsor of the squeezebox designation that wonby a vote of 6 to 4.

The accordion won the instrumental designation because ofits birth in San Francisco - or more precisely, its rebirth.

Accordion players were elated with the victory, saying thatafter the gloom and doom of the October earthquake, SanFrancisco's image needs just the sort of boost the accordionwill bring.

Accordion aficionados say their instrument was eclipsed onthe popular music scene with the advent of rock and roll.

But the squeezebox is making a pop comeback, insistedTom Torriglia, who plays with Those Darn Accordions!,a local group.

Torriglia noted that the band Aerosmith has a new songout that features an accordion and that singer Billy Joelused an accordion in his recent Bay Area concerts.

The accordion will not be official until Mayor Art Agnossigns the resolution. But his press secretary, Scott Shafer,said, "How could he object to the accordion?"

The piano accordion, an Italian import that once flourishedhere, then suffered decades of eclipse and is now making acomeback, has become the city's official instrument.

The Board of Supervisors voted 6 to 4 on Monday in favorof the raspy musical instrument.

Elated fans said the accordion was just what San Francisconeeded after the devastating earthquake that hit the city andother parts of Northern California last October. Themessage is that ''we're a lighthearted and bohemian city,''said Big Lou, an accordion player.

She and other accordion players wanted their instrumentrecognized as San Francisco's own for historical reasons.

Accordion player seeks his link to city’s past

Ernie Ogren was 10 years old when he stood on TreasureIsland along with 999 other accordion players andserenaded their audience at the 1939-40 Golden GateInternational Exposition.

Somewhere, a picture of that 1,000-member band, whichplayed together just that once, exists. And Ogren, now 84,is on a mission to find it.

Ogren was among several dozen people who gatheredSaturday morning to view archival photos of the fairpresented by Jean Moulin, curator of the century-oldMoulin Studios — a photographic archive and stockstudio created by three generations of the Moulin family.

At a lecture hosted by the Treasure Island MuseumAssociation, Jean Moulin showed photos of the exposition,also known as the World’s Fair, beginning with aerialshots of the island being created by the Army Corps ofEngineers. Her presentation included photos of EleanorRoosevelt and California Gov. Frank Merriam, of theMiss America pageant hosted there, and numerous shotsof the impressive artwork that decorated the fair, most ofwhich has been destroyed.

Star-Spangled Audition Opportunity!

To mark the 100th anniversary of the original SanFrancisco Accordion Club, and the 25thanniversary of the re-establishment of our club, theSFAC board is pursuing an opportunity toshowcase our club and San Francisco's "OfficialInstrument" with an all-accordion performance ofthe National Anthem before a San Francisco Giantsgame in 2015! To do this, we will submit anaudition recording to the SF Giants office in early2015.

Preliminary practice sessions are planned beforeour club meetings , November, December andJanuary at 1 PM before the jam band. A 5 partarrangement by Frank Marocco will be availableat the meetings or via email in advance. For the funof rehearsals, and just getting an exposure toplaying part music, we would like everyone who isinterested to bring an accordion and music stand,and try it out! Music is right hand only and is nottoo difficult, but it does require being able to readand to follow a conductor. The conductor ispreliminarily planned to be Lynn Ewing.

Because there is potentially extensive publicexposure if we are invited to perform the NationalAnthem at AT&T Park, we may have an auditionprocess for the actual recording of our auditionsubmission. It is suggested that participants shouldbe at least in Palmer Hughes book 3 to participatein the recording session. One or more practicesessions in addition to short rehearsals describedabove may be scheduled as needed to prepare forthe recording.

The band letloose with “Roll out the Barrel" After announcingthe particulars of an accordion event, theaccordionists filed out, ambling down ColumbusAvenue in search of their next target with atelevision cameraman in tow.

The story goes on to tell of some of thepreliminaries that led to the accordion being namedas San Francisco's official instrument (see page 5 ofthis newsletter).
