SCS Brief News: quick updates from the Board!

Parking Committee by Maryanne Delorenzo By now, all residents should have received the mailing from Optimum regarding re-registering your vehicles with Patrol Masters. Please be sure to get your forms turned in by May 1st for any vehicles you wish to park in the common area between the hours of 1AM and 6AM. Beginning on May 1st, any cars parked in the common area between these hours will be cited, and towed after three citations.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Patrol Masters at 877-648-0602, or contact me at 714-668-1923 or [email protected]. We look forward to improved service from Patrol Masters once this registration process is completed, and to seeing all SCS residents enjoy problem-free parking privileges. Thanks,

President’s Forum by Jack Casey Due to conflict Jack has with Costa Mesa cert the President’s open forum is moved to the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the clubhouse.

Clubhouse Report by Steve Nordwick The clubhouse is close to done with a projected completion date of May 1. The black metal and wood trim cafe furniture and two of the four area rugs are in route. The other two area rugs are back ordered and arrive the first week of June. Oh! One of the furniture pieces is a bar height community table. It can seat eight people for a game of cards or be used as an extended serving table. Four shades have been added to the west windows to cut down on the afternoon glare. These shades should also help preserve the area rugs from sun exposure. There is also a plan to increase the outdoor plantings on the west side of the building to add afternoon shade. All of the lighting is now complete. It includes two banks of over head track lights, two mid century chandeliers, three bar industrial style pendant lights, two mini track lights used on the back bar walls, and five recessed shelves with puck lights. All of which have dimmers to personalize the mood of the room. The new feature wall and bar are covered in reclaimed wood. The top of the feature wall has two side outlets that connect to a waist level switch. Come the holidays, we won’t have a single chord on the ground should we string hanging lights or place holiday trees on each side of the feature wall. The bar top is rich dark quartz and the entire back bar wall area is covered in faux Boxwood style greenery. The illuminated shelves in the feature wall will display a series of sea glass bottles and faux battery operated candles as part of the day to day design. However, residents renting the space are free to personalize these display shelves for their event. The painting is complete and is a neutral pallet of warm grays and olive tinted beams. It is a nice compliment to the rustic plank style tile that runs throughout the building. And for the big game, presentation, or movie night, a 65 inch flat screen has been added to the south west front corner of the clubhouse. It has a swing mount from the wall and has every conceivable way to stream media through our WiFi connection. I hope you enjoy the space. My idea was when one uses the clubhouse, you feel as though the decorating is already done. It

Page 3: Next Meeting: 4/26/2018

can be informal to formal based on your table setting and party themed ideas. So what’s left? I’m working on a clock and adding tiny hooks around the room to help you hang decoration should you feel the need. These hooks will be plentiful and help protect the space as we eliminate decoration attached to paint, finishes, and feature lighting. I’m also happy to report we are far under budget on this project!

Clubhouse Report by Freddie Troy We will be having some new guidelines for decorating in the Clubhouse, so that the new decor will remain unharmed. We can’t be hanging things from the new chandeliers, but there are about 100 hooks spread around for decorating. Some are on the feature wall, some on the center support beam in the middle of the room and even some behind the bar. Just look around. I have three dates reserved for May as of now, so get in touch if you are interested in May or June, as they are usually busy months. There is an updated SCS calendar of events on the bulletin board as of Saturday, April 21. Lots going on in SCS! Pool Committee by Louis Steers The pool is being heated through Thanksgiving weekend. Please observe all rules indicated on the sign on entrance gate and at the spa area. Treat the entire pool area as your own....so it will be ready to use for you and all residents. Let's keep the area clean and tidy....thank you! If any issues report to Optimum Maintenance , Mark Gardner or contact pool committee to [email protected]

BOARD Business Updates: Pet’s Corner: 10 Fun Things You Did Not Know About Cats

Cats are curious, spontaneous creatures with attitude and sass like no other animal. To know them is to love them, and even if you label yourself a cat lover, you still may not know everything about the feline kind.

1. Some cats actually like water The Turkish Angora is one of the ancient breeds of domesticated cat, known for its sleek body and high pointed ears. This breed is naturally drawn to water and some have even been reported as swimming or wading in pools of it. There are a few other breeds that have been known to like water, such as the: American Shorthair, Maine Coon, American Bobtail and the Turkish Van.

2. Cats are manipulative—when they need to be Everyone knows that when a cat is hungry, they won’t beat around the bush about it. They will rub on you, paw at you and some might even meow at the top of their lungs. While this may appear something like a distress call, cats practice this behavior to manipulate their owners to get what they want—food!

3. Cats dream just like us If a cat is relaxed enough and has entered a deep sleep, their little minds produce the same brain wave patterns that we do to send them into dream land. Maybe there kitty can catch that pesky squirrel for real this time!

4. Cats can get sick from eating chocolate just like dogs Not usually one to fall in the same category with a canine, cats also cannot tolerate chocolate and consuming it can cause them to become very ill. Cats are carnivorous by nature and they don’t have a taste for the sweet stuff. Still, be sure to be careful when leaving it out so kitty doesn’t find it.

5. They have the ability to tolerate heat very well despite the fur Domesticated cats are all descendants to their ancestor big cats-many of which could be found in desert settings centuries ago. Because of this, cats can tolerate high temperatures well and pant to cool themselves. (They even have the ability to sweat—through the pads on the bottoms of their feet!)

6. Careful, not too close! Because their eyes are so large, cats are not able to focus on anything closer than a foot in front of them—making them farsighted. Luckily they have the ability to use their whiskers to sense things that they can’t clearly see.

7. Don’t call it a cat nap Although it may sometimes seem like you’ve got a narcoleptic kitty on your hands, it’s actually natural for your feline to spend most of their time napping. On average, a domesticated cat spends approximately 2/3 of its life asleep. Must be nice!

8. Cats don’t have collarbones Without a collarbone; this allows cats the flexibility to fit through openings the size of their heads. Now maybe you know how kitty wedged their body in places you didn’t think possible!

9. You are not allergic to cats For all those people who say they’re allergic to cats, well, they aren’t allergic to the cats themselves. People are actually allergic to cat dander, not cat fur. This is because cat’s produce a hormone in their saliva that triggers allergies for humans. Due to cats “bathing” themselves, this is how the saliva spreads on the fur.

10. Catnip Isn’t Just for Kittens Surprisingly, catnip can have an effect on cats of all shapes and sizes. Reports have shown that catnip has an effect on all cats (young and adult) and not only that, but even big cats such as lions and tigers… oh my!

Architect’s Corner - by Mario Bonura As anticipated, the normal activity of reviewing routine improvement applications by the Architectural Committee began to pick up with the start of spring. With the return of warmer weather residents are considering and requesting more improvements and repairs. In March a new ejection pump was installed on the East Dock. However, when the pump was started, a large leak was noted in the old galvanized discharge pipe leading to the storm drain. After removing some decking to uncover the area, we discovered a PVC pipe running from the area of the ejection pump, into the ground at the lake edge, and then into the storm drain. Rather than patching into the old rusty galvanized pipe, we connected the ejection pump to the PVC pipe and everything works properly. We now have great water flow from the lake into the storm drain. We have no idea when that PVC pipe was installed or why it wasn’t used before; it's just another SCS mystery. The Wellhead Enclosure has been modified to replace the shingled rooftop with a flat perforated metal cover. The original design required a large crane to lift the heavy roof to permit access to the well manifold valves and flow meters. The new design incorporates two large hinged panels that will provide easy access for equipment maintenance.
